RESUMEN

The study presented a rare case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) in a 57-year old male patient who presented with recurrent abdominal pain. He was diagnosed to have a tumor of the small intestine within ileal intussusception, demonstrated by CT enterography. The patient underwent surgery to remove the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination results enabled to diagnose IMT. IMT is a rare tumor that occurs mainly in children and young adults. Its etiology remains to be fully understood. Due to the differentiated histology it can be found in many organs and soft tissues, being responsible for different, non-specific clinical and radiological symptoms. Due to the rarity of this tumor a clear treatment protocol has not yet been established. However, given the tendency to recur with possible distant metastases an important element of treatment consists in long-term clinical patient observation.

RESUMEN

In recent years ultrasonography has become one of basic imaging techniques used by radiologists, orthopedists, and rheumatologists for the study of the musculoskeletal system, particularly in patients with rheumatic diseases. This position of ultrasonography is the result of rapid technical advances. Contemporary ultrasound scanners have little in common with those used when ultrasonography was introduced into medicine. Modern ultrasound scanners offer additional options like tissue harmonic imaging, power color Doppler, volumetric ultrasonography (3D/4D imaging), and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography. Moreover, image resolution during examination has significantly been improved thanks to high-resolution transducers and software for image analysis. This article discusses modern ultrasonographic techniques and their use.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions appear both in brain and cervical cord. The aim of this study was to estimate the presence of MRI changes in cervical cord depending on the course, duration of the disease and a disability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical measures included 66 patients suffering from MS, the diagnosis was made according to McDonald's criteria. Patients were aged from 18 to 62 (41 women and 25 men). RESULTS: In patients with relapsing-remitting form (EDSS 1-4) single lesions were seen whereas secondary progressive patients (EDSS 3-7) had diffuse demyelinating lesions and primary progressive patients (EDSS 4-8)--both kinds of changes. It has been shown that the lesions occurred as the disease proceeds. Patients without demyelinating lesions in cervical cord had EDSS from 1 to 3 and the duration of their disease was longer than 10 years (benign MS). CONCLUSIONS: The duration of the disease depends on the presence and character of demyelinating lesions in cervical cord to a large extent. That dependence was not noticed in a primary progressive form. In benign MS there were no lesions in cervical cord.
