RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the cognitive functioning of children and youth with type 1 diabetes (T1DM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 68 children with type 1 diabetes, aged 6-17 years, divided into 3 groups according to the level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c): group 1: HbA1c ≤ 6.0-7.5%; group 2: HbA1c 7.6-8.5%; group 3: HbA1c over 8.6%. Wechsler's intelligence scale (WISC-R), the Trail of 10 words and Brickenkamp's and Zillmer's d2 Test of Attention were used to assess cognitive functioning. RESULTS: The research demonstrated a significant influence of low, medium or high glycaemic control on lowering the general level of functioning in verbal intelligence, and in WISC-R subtests: information, vocabulary, comprehension, number sequencing and block design. CONCLUSIONS: Children with type 1 diabetes mellitus can experience difficulties in cognitive functioning, as a consequence of high HbA1c. Additional research, involving a larger group of patients and a wider age range when the disease was diagnosed, will enable further findings on the occurrence of cognitive impairment in T1DM.

RESUMEN

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in epithelial cell tissue culture, particularly oral mucosa and its application utilizing in vitro cell culture in medicine. This involves tests using animal models to better understand oral mucosa function, and the differences in its construction in various animal models. The use of buccal pouch mucosal cell culture provides insight into the processes of trans mucosal transport and regeneration of the oral epithelium. The processes associated with epithelium regeneration is the base for stem cell research and/or oral cancer investigation. These artificially cultured tissue equivalents are used in transplant surgery for the treatment of a variety of tissue dysfunctions, i.e. eye, esophagus, or urethra. In this review, the most recent results from studies carried out on in animal models, which may be applied in areas such as regenerative medicine and reconstructive surgery, were explored.

RESUMEN

Tolpa Torf Preparation (TTP) is an immunomodulating drug produced by Torf Corporation, Wroclaw and registered for human use in Poland. TTP enhances the process of tissue regeneration. Authors evaluate TTP effectiveness in the treatment of inflammatory states of the cervix, especially cervical erosions and the influence of this preparation of the macroscopic, cytological and bacteriological state of the cervix. TTP was used in 31 patients with the diagnosis of cervical erosion. All patients treated as yet were classified into 3 groups, depending on the treatment of cervical erosion used previously. TTP was administered orally in the dose of 5 mg (in 10 ml of water) daily during 10 days and locally in the form of tampons soaked with 1% TTP solution in the volume of 5 ml also during 10 days. TTP administered this way has beneficial therapeutic effects on the healing of cervical erosion accelerating the process of epithelialization and bringing normalization of the cytological picture. Especially beneficial in the treatment of cervical erosion is combined use of TTP and electrocoagulation or curettage--the healing time can be shortened by half.
