RESUMEN

In order to illustrate the relationship between methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in maintaining the quality and improving the postharvest life of strawberry fruit, the harvested fruit were treated with MeJA for 16 h at 20 °C and stored at 3 ± 0.5 °C for 12 days. MeJA enhanced the expression levels of GABA shunt pathway-related genes, including glutamate decarboxylase, GABA transaminase, and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, leading to an increase in GABA accumulation. Treated fruit showed higher levels of total acids, anthocyanins, total phenolics, antioxidants, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, and lower levels of cell membrane deterioration, total soluble solids, polyphenol oxidase activity and decay incidence rate. The results suggest that the positive effects of MeJA in extending the fruit postharvest life, enhancing phytochemical compounds, and decreasing the decay incidence rate may be due to the effects on motivating GABA shunt pathway and PAL enzyme activity.

RESUMEN

Chilling injury reduces the quality and commercial value of banana. The effects of exogenous phytosulfokine α (PSKα) on chilling tolerance of banana via modulating the metabolism of polyamine, proline, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were studied. The results showed that the chilling injury of banana was inhibited by 150 nM PSKα treatment, which was 13.6 % lower than that of the control group at the end of storage. The activities of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), arginine decarboxylase (ADC), ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), and the endogenous NO content were increased significantly by PSKα treatment. The diamine oxidase (DAO) and polyamine oxidase (PAO) activities were inhibited, leading to putrescine (Put), spermine (Spm), and spermidine (Spd) increased. Proline and GABA contents in PSKα-treated banana were also increased, which might be due to the activated biosynthesis pathway and suppressed catabolism pathway. These results demonstrated that exogenous PSKα might be maintain quality and retard chilling injury of banana.

RESUMEN

The physiological and molecular markers were evaluated for defining leaf pruning line in bearing status of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera cv. Mazafati). Our results showed that the higher expression of the chlorophyllase (Chlase) gene was concomitant with lower expression of chlorophyll synthase (ChlG) and oxygen-evolving enhancer protein (PSBO) genes in the 6-year-old leaf line. In addition, the 6-year-old leaf line resulted in a lower Hill reaction rate, chlorophyll a/b ratio, photosystem Ⅱ quantum efficiency, and photosynthesis rate. Also, lower expression and activities of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) was associated with higher malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in 6-year-old leaf line. These results suggested that the physiological maturity termination, senescence stage initiation, and source to sink transition could occur in 6-year-old leaves. Furthermore, delayed 5-year-old leaf pruning line adjustment in consecutive years could increase quantitative and qualitative yield loss, decrease water use efficiency, and promote alternate bearing and fruit abscission, which is considered a common problem of date growing areas. Further, the senescence-related markers in the alternate bearing trees pruned in pruning line 5 showed a tendency to normal trees. The five-year-old pruning line also resulted in the balance of bunching and loading the alternate bearing trees.

RESUMEN

Storage of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) as originally tropical fruit is limited by the risk of chilling injury (CI). To develop an effective technique to reduce CI, the effects of treatment with 0, 50 and 100 µM prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca) on CI, electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline contents, and activities of phospholipase D (PLD) and lipoxygenase (LOX), were investigated in tomato fruit stored at 1°C for 21 days. Treatment with Pro-Ca, without significant difference between two applied concentrations, significantly mitigated chilling injury. Also, Pro-Ca treatment maintained lower levels of EL and MDA content, higher level of proline content and inhibited the increases in PLD and LOX activities compared with the control fruit. These results suggest that Pro-Ca might mitigate CI by inhibiting PLD and LOX activities and by enhancing membrane integrity.
