RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, interest in working life expectancy (WLE) and socioeconomic differences in WLE has grown considerably. However, a comprehensive overview of the socioeconomic differences in WLE is lacking. The aim of this review is to systematically map the research literature to improve the insight on differences in WLE and healthy WLE (HWLE) by education, occupational class and income while using different ways of measuring and estimating WLE and to define future research needs. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out in Web of Science, PubMed and EMBASE and complemented by relevant publications derived through screening of reference lists of the identified publications and expert knowledge. Reports on differences in WLE or HWLE by education, occupational class or income, published until November 2022, were included. Information on socioeconomic differences in WLE and HWLE was synthesized in absolute and relative terms. RESULTS: A total of 26 reports from 21 studies on educational and occupational class differences in WLE or HWLE were included. No reports on income differences were found. On average, WLE in persons with low education is 30% (men) and 27% (women) shorter than in those with high education. The corresponding numbers for occupational class difference were 21% (men) and 27% (women). Low-educated persons were expected to lose more working years due to unemployment and disability retirement than high-educated persons. CONCLUSIONS: The identified socioeconomic inequalities are highly relevant for policy makers and pose serious challenges for equitable pension policies. Many policy interventions aimed at increasing the length of working life follow a one-size-fits-all approach which does not take these inequalities into account. More research is needed on socioeconomic differences in HWLE and potential influences of income on working life duration.

RESUMEN

The sustained rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) causes a strong need to develop new antibacterial agents. One of the methods for addressing the problem of antibiotic resistance is through the design of hybrid antibiotics. In this work, we proposed a synthetic route for the conjugation of an azithromycin derivative with chloramphenicol and metronidazole hemisuccinates and synthesized two series of new hybrid molecules 4a-g and 5a-g. While a conjugation did not result in tangible synergy for wild-type bacterial strains, new compounds were able to overcome AMR associated with the inducible expression of the ermC gene on a model E. coli strain resistant to macrolide antibiotics. The newly developed hybrids demonstrated a tendency to induce premature ribosome stalling, which might be crucial since they will not induce a macrolide-resistant phenotype in a number of pathogenic bacterial strains. In summary, the designed structures are considered as a promising direction for the further development of hybrid molecules that can effectively circumvent AMR mechanisms to macrolide antibiotics.

RESUMEN

This work focuses on the synthesis of a new series of amphiphilic derivatives of calix[4]arenes for the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The aggregation properties of synthesized calix[4]arenes were studied using various techniques (fluorescence spectroscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and dynamic light scattering). Increasing the length of the alkyl substituent led to stronger hydrophobic interactions, which increased polydispersity in solution. The zwitterionic nature of the synthesized calix[4]arenes was established using different types of dyes (Eosin Y for anionic structures and Rhodamine 6G for cationic structures). The synthesized calix[4]arenes were used as organic stabilizers for CuI. The catalytic efficiency of CuI-calix[4]arene was compared with that of the phase transfer catalyst tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) and the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). For all calixarenes, the selectivity in the CuAAC reaction was higher than that observed when TBAB and SDS were estimated.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The use of part-time sickness absence (pSA) enables return to part-time work from full sickness absence. However, subsequent labour market outcomes of pSA users depend on various individual and work-related characteristics. We investigated labour market paths of private and public sector employees after having a pSA spell. Moreover, we examined individual and work-related factors associated with following them. DESIGN: Longitudinal register-based cohort study. SETTING: Finnish employed population. PARTICIPANTS: 9896 receivers of partial sickness allowance aged 45-56 in the years 2010-2014. OUTCOME: We constructed labour market trajectories based on the proportion of time spent in various labour market statuses measured over 3 years after the end of the pSA spell using multiresponse trajectory analysis. We then examined how different individual and work-related factors were associated with assignment to the different trajectory groups using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The majority of the pSA users followed paths where work participation was consistently elevated (Sustained Work group, 40.4%), or only slightly reduced (Slightly Reduced Work group, 31.6%). Moreover, more than 1/10th of the users followed a path where receiving partial work disability benefits became predominant (Partial Work Disability group, 12.5%). The rest followed paths where other non-employment (Other Non-Employed group, 7.8%) or full work disability (Full Work Disability group, 7.7%) became the prevailing status. Lower educational level and income predicted assignment to all other groups than the Sustained Work group. Additional predictors were identified, yet these differed between the trajectory groups. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the pSA users maintained a connection to working life, yet weaker working life paths were also identified. The paths were determined by various individual and work-related factors that can help health professionals and employers to better target support measures particularly towards individuals whose connection to working life is at risk to weaken after the use of pSA.

RESUMEN

In this study, we assessed whether the long-term decrease in sickness absences in Finland is explained by observed and unobserved compositional changes in the workforce. Utilizing register-based panel data on Finnish wage earners aged 30-62, we examined the annual onset of compensated sickness absence (granted after 10 weekdays) in the period 2005-2016. We applied random effects models adjusting for changes in the observed sociodemographic and occupational characteristics of the study population. We also applied fixed effects models, with corrections of the estimates for cohort ageing, to additionally account for the unobserved time-invariant characteristics of the study population over the years. Of the observed characteristics, increasing educational level partly explained the decreasing trend in sickness absences, and the further contribution of the occupational class was weak. Additionally, accounting for unobserved individual characteristics further explained the decreasing trend in sickness absences among those aged 30-47 years and led to a reverse increasing trend among those aged 48-62 years irrespective of sex and employment sector. Particularly for those over 47 years old, the decrease in sickness absences appeared to be more strongly influenced by compositional changes in characteristics that are established before fully entering the labour market - such as educational level as well as unmeasured individual characteristics that remain unchanged after childhood and early adulthood - than in the work environment or other factors contributing at working age. Sickness absence trends fluctuated during economic cycles, which did not appear to be explained by immediate changes in the observed or unobserved characteristics. Different mechanisms are likely to explain long-term sickness absence trends and trends around economic cycles. Attempts to improve work ability and labour market inclusion in long-term should rely more on increasing educational levels among the workforce and on interventions carried out early during the life course.

RESUMEN

Food is an important source of melatonin (MT), which belongs to a group known as chronobiotics, a class of substances that affect the circadian system. Currently, no studies have been conducted on how the consumption of foods containing MT (FMT) is associated with indicators characterizing the human circadian system. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that FMT consumption is associated with chronotype and social jetlag. A total of 1277 schoolchildren and university students aged M (SD) 19.9 (4.1) years (range: 16-25 years; girls: 72.8%) participated in a cross-sectional study. Each participant completed an online questionnaire with their personal data (sex, age, height, weight, waist circumference, and academic performance) and a sequence of tests to assess their sleep-wake rhythm (the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire), sleep quality (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and depression level (the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale). Study participants also completed a modified food frequency questionnaire that only included foods containing MT (FMT). They were asked how many foods containing MT (FMT) they had eaten for dinner, constituting their daily serving, in the past month. The consumption of foods containing MT (FMT) during the day (FMTday) and at dinner (FMTdinner) was assessed using this test. Multiple regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the studied indicators. We found that higher FMTday values were associated with early chronotype (ß = -0.09) and less social jetlag (ß = -0.07), better sleep quality (ß = -0.06) and lower levels of depression (ß = -0.11), as well as central adiposity (ß = -0.08). Higher FMTdinner values were associated with a lower risk of central adiposity (ß = -0.08). In conclusion, the data obtained confirm the hypothesis that the consumption of foods containing MT (FMT) is associated with chronotype and social jetlag in adolescents and young adults.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Reduced work ability is relatively common among job seekers and it can hinder future labour market attachment. A commonly used measure to increase employability is the use of active labour market programmes. While vocational labour market training (LMT) has been shown to be an effective way to increase work participation among job seekers, there is still uncertainty about how LMT works in different population groups, for example, among persons with a work disability history. METHODS: We used nationally representative Finnish register data on 16 062 LMT participants in 2008-2015 aged 25-59 with a history of sickness absence (SA) and propensity score matched participants without such history. For matching, we used information on sociodemographic and work-related factors. We used difference-in-differences analysis to investigate the differential changes in work participation before and after LMT between those with and those without SA history. RESULTS: Having a history of SA was associated with a lower gain in work participation after LMT, but the magnitude varied by sex, employment history and follow-up time. In women, having a history of SA contributed to 3.9-6.2 percentage points smaller increase in work participation 1-3 years after LMT, depending on the employment history. In men, the corresponding numbers were 2.0-4.3 percentage points. The results were more pronounced if the SA was due to mental disorders. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that work disability, especially due to mental disorders, can hamper work participation after LMT and should be considered when planning employment-enhancing measures for job seekers.

RESUMEN

Tumor selectivity is yet a challenge in chemotherapy-based cancer treatment. A series of calixarenes derivatized at the lower rim with 3-phenyl-1H-pyrazole units with variable upper-rim substituent and conformations of macrocyclic core, alkyl chain length between heterocycle and core, as well as phenolic monomer (5-(4-tert-butylphenyloxy)methoxy-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazole) have been synthesized and characterized in a range of therapeutically relevant cellular models (M-HeLa, MCF7, A-549, PC3, Chang liver, and Wi38) from different target organs/systems. Specific cytotoxicity for M-HeLa cells has been observed in tert-butylcalix[4]arene pyrazoles in 1,3-alternate (compound 7b) and partial cone (compound 7c) conformations with low mutagenicity and haemotoxicity and in vivo toxicity in mice. Compounds 7b,c have induced mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis of M-HeLa cells through caspase-9 activation preceded by the cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase. A concomitant overexpression of DNA damage markers in pyrazole-treated M-HeLa cells suggests that calixarene pyrazoles target DNA, which was supported by the presence of interactions between calixarenes and ctDNA at the air-water interface.

RESUMEN

A series of four new Dy12 dodecanuclear clusters based on azobenzene derivative ligands of salicylic acid (L1-L4) has been synthesized and characterized in the crystalline phase using X-ray diffraction on single crystal and powder, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and DSC-TGA methods. It was revealed that all obtained clusters exhibit the formation of the similar metallic cluster nodes, as vertex-sharing heterocubanes, obtained from four Dy3+ cations, three bridging hydroxyl groups, and O atoms from the salicylic ligands. The coordination geometry around the Dy(III) centers has been carefully analyzed. Whereas Dy12-L1 and Dy12-L2 with L1 and L2 containing Me and OMe groups in para positions of the phenyl rings, respectively, form similar porous 3D diamond-like molecular networks due to CH-π interactions, for Dy12-L3 with L3 bearing NO2-electron-withdrawing group, the generation of 2D molecular grids assembled by π-π staking is observed, and for Dy12-L4 with L4 bearing phenyl substituent, 3D hexagonal channels have been generated. The complexes Dy12-L1, Dy12-L2, and Dy12-L3 exhibit a zero-field slow magnetic relaxation effect. After UV irradiation of Dy12-L1, a decrease of the magnetic anisotropy energy barrier displaying the possibility of control over magnetic properties by the external stimulus has been observed.

RESUMEN

The present work focuses on the study of the aggregation and complexing properties of calixarenes as potential DNA condensation agents for gene delivery. In the current study, 1,4-triazole derivatives of calix[4]arenes 7 and 8 containing monoammonium fragments were synthesized. The synthesized compound's structure was characterized by using various spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, HRESI MS, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR). The interactions between a series of calix[4]arene-containing aminotriazole groups (triazole-containing macrocycles with diethylenetriammonium fragments (3 and 4) and triazole-containing macrocycles with monoammonium fragments (7 and 8)) and calf thymus DNA were carried out via UV absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The role of the binding forces of calixarene-DNA complexes was analyzed. Photophysical and morphological studies revealed the interaction of the calixarenes 3, 4 and 8 with ct-DNA, which transformed the fibrous structure of ct-DNA to completely condensed compact structures that are 50 nm in diameter. The cytotoxic properties of calixarenes 3, 4, 7 and 8 against cancerous cells (MCF7, PC-3) as well as a healthy cell line (HSF) were investigated. Compound 4 was found to have the highest toxic effect on MCF7 breast adenocarcinoma (IC50 3.3 µM).

RESUMEN

CONTEXT: The molecular design of spatially preorganized molecules is one of the critical issues in organic chemistry. Molecular recognition and multipoint binding define them. They organize nanoscale assemblies and devices and stably form host-guest inclusion complexes. Not only is this kind of research important in theory but it also has applications. They are used to create the basic elements of sensory devices: elements of cellular electronics, functional nanofilms and coatings, molecular switches, etc. Thiacalix[4]arenes are a useful molecular platform for constructing a wide range of preorganized receptor structures. This research aims to examine the structure and spectra of distally substituted para-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene aliphatic (C1) and aromatic (C2) esters. The comparison of the spectra of C1, C2, and C3 makes it possible to reveal the structures and H-bonds of these compounds. The structures and H-bonds of these compounds can be seen by analyzing the spectra of C1, C2, and C3. Calculations were made for the spectra of various C1 and C2 molecule conformations. The most stable conformation for C1 and C2 molecules is a distorted cone 2 (DC2) with the same ester group orientation. The pinched cone (PC) conformation is the most unstable. Thiacalixarene molecules' cavities shrink from 3.61 to 3.57 Å when aromatic ester groups take the place of aliphatic ester groups. Two OH groups are linked to an oxygen atom in the DC1 and DC2 conformations of the C1 and C2 molecules. H-bonds in C1 and C2 molecules affect the supramolecular characteristics of these molecules. A drop in ionization energy and increases in electron affinity, chemical potential, softness, electrophilicity index, and dipole moment occur when aliphatic esters are replaced with aromatic ones. METHODS: Disubstituted aliphatic and aromatic esters' IR, Raman, and NMR spectra have been investigated. The DFT/B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) method and the GAUSSIAN 09W software were used to determine the vibrational spectra of molecules and optimize their geometry. A gauge-independent (GIAO) approach was used to determine chemical shifts in the NMR spectra with respect to tetramethylsilane.

RESUMEN

A series of new 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidenethiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidines with different aryl substituents at the 5 position are synthesized and characterized by 1H/ 13C NMR and IR-spectroscopy and mass-spectrometry, as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). It was demonstrated that the type of hydrogen bonding can play a key role in the chiral discrimination of these compounds in the crystalline phase. The hydrogen bond of the O-H...N type leads to 1D supramolecular heterochiral chains or conglomerate crystallization in the case of the formation of homochiral chains. The hydrogen bond of O-H...O type gave racemic dimers, which are packed into 2D supramolecular layers with a parallel or angular dimers arrangement. Halogen bonding of the N...Br or O...Br type brings a new motif into supramolecular self-assembly in the crystalline phase: the formation of 1D supramolecular homochiral chains instead 2D supramolecular layers. The study of cytotoxicity against various tumor cells in vitro was carried out. It was found that 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidenethiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidines with 3-nitrophenyl substituent at C5 carbon atom demonstrated a high efficiency against M-HeLa (cervical adenocarcinoma) and low cytotoxicity against normal liver cells.

RESUMEN

Polyene antifungal amphotericin B (AmB) has been used for over 60 years, and remains a valuable clinical treatment for systemic mycoses, due to its broad antifungal activity and low rate of emerging resistance. There is no consensus on how exactly it kills fungal cells but it is certain that AmB and the closely-related nystatin (Nys) can form pores in membranes and have a higher affinity towards ergosterol than cholesterol. Notably, the high nephro- and hemolytic toxicity of polyenes and their low solubility in water have led to efforts to improve their properties. We present the synthesis of new amphotericin and nystatin amides and a comparative study of the effects of identical modifications of AmB and Nys on the relationship between their structure and properties. Generally, increases in the activity/toxicity ratio were in good agreement with increasing ratios of selective permeabilization of ergosterol- vs. cholesterol-containing membranes. We also show that the introduced modifications had an effect on the sensitivity of mutant yeast strains with alterations in ergosterol biosynthesis to the studied polyenes, suggesting a varying affinity towards intermediate ergosterol precursors. Three new water-soluble nystatin derivatives showed a prominent improvement in safety and were selected as promising candidates for drug development.

RESUMEN

Hypoxia accompanies many human diseases and is an indicator of tumor aggressiveness. Therefore, measuring hypoxia in vivo is clinically important. Recently, complexes of calix[4]arene were identified as potent hypoxia markers. The subject of this paper is new hypoxia-sensitive host-guest complexes of thiacalix[4]arene. We report a new high-yield synthesis method for thiacalix[4]arene with four anionic carboxyl azo fragments on the upper rim (thiacalixarene L) and an assessment of the complexes of thiacalixarene L with the most widespread cationic rhodamine dyes (6G, B, and 123) sensitivity to hypoxia. Moreover, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy data support the ability of the macrocycles to form complexes with dyes. Rhodamines B and 123 formed host-guest complexes of 1:1 stoichiometry. Complexes of mixed composition were formed with rhodamine 6G. The association constant between thiacalixarene L and rhodamine 6G is higher than for other dyes. Thiacalixarene L-dye complexes with rhodamine 6G and rhodamine B are stable in the presence of various substances present in a biological environment. The UV-VIS spectrometry and fluorescence showed hypoxia responsiveness of the complexes. Our results demonstrate that thiacalixarene L has a stronger binding with dyes compared with the previously reported azo-calix[4]arene carboxylic derivative. Thus, these results suggest higher selective visualization of hypoxia for the complexes with thiacalixarene L.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Mounting evidence indicates increased risk of COVID-19 among healthcare personnel, but the evidence on risks in other occupations is limited. In this study, we quantify the occupational risk of COVID-19-related hospital admission in Denmark during 2020-2021. METHODS: The source population included 2.4 million employees age 20-69 years. All information was retrieved from public registers. The risk of COVID-19 related hospital admission was examined in 155 occupations with at least 2000 employees (at-risk, N=1 620 231) referenced to a group of mainly office workers defined by a COVID-19 job exposure matrix (N=369 341). Incidence rate ratios (IRR) were computed by Poisson regression. RESULTS: During 186 million person-weeks of follow-up, we observed 2944 COVID-19 related hospital admissions in at-risk occupations and 559 in referents. Adjusted risk of such admission was elevated in several occupations within healthcare (including health care assistants, nurses, medical practitioners and laboratory technicians but not physiotherapists or midwives), social care (daycare assistants for children aged 4-7, and nursing aides in institutions and private homes, but not family daycare workers) and transportation (bus drivers, but not lorry drivers). Most IRR in these at-risk occupations were in the range of 1.5-3. Employees in education, retail sales and various service occupations seemed not to be at risk. CONCLUSION: Employees in several occupations within and outside healthcare are at substantially increased risk of COVID-19. There is a need to revisit safety measures and precautions to mitigate viral transmission in the workplace during the current and forthcoming pandemics.

RESUMEN

Natamycin is a macrolide polyene antibiotic, characterized by a potent broad spectrum antifungal activity and low toxicity. However, it is not used for the treatment of systemic mycoses due to its low bioavailability and low solubility in aqueous solutions. In order to create new semisynthetic antifungal agents for treatment of mycoses, a series of water-soluble amides of natamycin were synthesized. Antifungal activities of natamycin derivatives were investigated against Candida spp., including a panel of Candida auris clinical isolates and filamentous fungi. Toxicity for mammalian cells was assayed by monitoring antiproliferative activity against human postnatal fibroblasts (HPF) and human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293). By comparing leakage of contents from ergosterol versus cholesterol containing vesicles, a ratio that characterizes the efficacy and safety of natamycin and its derivatives was determined (EI, efficiency index). Ability of all tested semisynthetic natamycines to prevent proliferation of the yeast Candida spp. cells was comparable or even slightly higher to those of parent antibiotic. Interestingly, amide 8 was more potent than natamycin (1) against all tested C. auris strains (MIC values 2 µg/mL vs 8 µg/mL, respectively). Among 7 derivatives, amide 10 with long lipophilic side chains showed the highest EI and strong antifungal activity in vitro but was more toxic against HPF. In vivo experiments with amide 8 showed in vivo efficacy on a mouse candidemia model with a larger LD50/ED50 ratio in comparison to amphotericin B.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Depressive and anxiety disorders are prevalent among employees in general. Still, knowledge regarding the contribution of these disorders to the dynamics of the labor market in terms of working time, sickness absence, and unemployment is scarce. We aim to quantify the linkage of depressive and anxiety disorders with labor market participation using the expected labor market affiliation method (ELMA), in a large sample of Danish employees. METHODS: We combined three survey waves on occupational health with six high-quality national registers in N = 43,148 Danish employees, of which the 2012 survey contributed 29,665 person years, the 2014 survey 33,043 person years, and the 2016 survey 35,375 person years. We used the new ELMA method to estimate the multi-state transition probabilities and 2-year expected time in work, sickness absence, and unemployment. Depressive and anxiety disorders were assessed by the Major Depression Inventory and the SCL-ANX4 scales, respectively. We adjusted for multiple variables by applying inverse probability weighting in groups of gender and age. RESULTS: Depressive and anxiety disorders among employees link to reduced labor market affiliation by significantly changed transitions probabilities between the labor markets states, viewed as reduced working time by 4-51 days (in two years), increased time in sickness absence by 6-44 days (in two years), and unemployment by 6-12 days (in two years) when compared to employees without depression or anxiety disorders. The results were most pronounced for women employees and for employees with both depression and anxiety disorders. CONCLUSIONS: The study reveals detailed insight into what extent depression and anxiety disorders influence the labor market affiliation, in terms of the complex interrelation between working time, sickness absence, and unemployment. The study emphasizes the importance of preventing and handling depressive and anxiety disorders among employees for strengthening work participation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The use of part-time sickness absence (pSA) instead of full-time sickness absence (fSA) is known to increase work participation. Yet, its effect on the total length of working lives remains unclear. We carried out a quasi-experiment to assess the impact of using pSA versus fSA on the length of working lives. METHODS: We used a register-based 70% random sample of the working-age population living in Finland on 31 December 2007 to (i) form propensity-score-matched groups of users of pSA and fSA and (ii) calculate their working life expectancy (WLE) and working years lost (WYL). We applied the Sullivan method based on daily measured time spent at work and other labor market statuses, followed up over a four-year period until the end of year 2017. The study population consisted of private and public sector employees with SA due to mental and musculoskeletal disorders, ie, the diagnostic groups where pSA has been primarily used. RESULTS: Among both genders, the pSA group had a significantly higher WLE at age 30 than the fSA group, with larger differences seen in mental disorders compared to musculoskeletal diseases and in the private versus public sector. Overall, the pSA group had fewer WYL due to unemployment and disability retirement but more expected years working with partial disability benefits than the fSA group. CONCLUSIONS: Based on beneficial working career effects, the use of pSA instead of fSA should always be recommended for persons with mental or musculoskeletal disorders where feasible.

RESUMEN

Artificial gene delivery systems are in great demand from both scientific and practical biomedical points of view. In this paper, we present the synthesis of a new click chemistry calix[4]arene precursor with free lower rim and new water-soluble calixarene triazoles with 12 amino-groups on the upper rim (one with free phenol hydroxyl groups and two another containing four butyl or tetradecyl fragments). Aggregation in the series of amino-triazole calixarenes of different lipophilicity (calixarene with free phenol hydroxyl groups or butyl and tetradecyl fragments on the lower rim) was studied using dynamic light scattering and fluorescent pyrene probe. It was found that calix[4]arene with a free lower rim, like alkyl-substituted butyl calix[4]arene, forms stable submicron aggregates 150-200 nm in size, while the more lipophilic tetradecyl -substituted calix[4]arene forms micellar aggregates19 nm in size. Using UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorimetry and CD, it was shown that amino-triazole calix[4]arenes bind to calf thymus DNA by classical intercalation. According to DLS and TEM data, all studied macrocycles cause significant DNA compaction, forming stable nanoparticles 50-20 nm in size. Among all studied calix[4]arenes the most lipophilic tetradecyl one proved to be the best for both binding and compaction of DNA.

RESUMEN

We identified occupations with a high incidence of prolonged sickness absence (SA) in Nordic employees and explored similarities and differences between the countries. Utilizing data from national registers on 25-59-year-old wage-earners from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, we estimated the gender- and occupation-specific age-adjusted cumulative incidence of SA due to any cause, musculoskeletal diseases and mental disorders. To increase the comparability of occupations between the countries, we developed a Nordic crosswalk for occupational codes. We ranked occupational groups with the incidence of SA being statistically significantly higher than the population average of the country in question and calculated excess fractions with the employee population being the reference group. We observed considerable occupational differences in SA within and between the countries. Few occupational groups had a high incidence in all countries, particularly for mental disorders among men. In each country, manual occupations typically had a high incidence of SA due to any cause and musculoskeletal diseases, while service occupations had a high incidence due to mental disorders. Preventive measures targeted at specific occupational groups have a high potential to reduce work disability, especially due to musculoskeletal diseases. Particularly groups with excess SA in all Nordic countries could be at focus.
