OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of instilling highly concentrated hyaluronic acid (HA)/chondroitin sulphate (CS) on ureteric stent-related pain, urinary symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) of patients who underwent ureteroscopic lithotripsy for ureteric stones followed by ureteric stent placement. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients were randomly allocated to receive intravesical instillation with HA/CS or normal saline just after ureteric stent placement. Just before stent removal on postoperative day 7, the patients completed the Ureteric Stent Symptom Questionnaire (USSQ), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) QoL question, and a pain visual analogue scale (VAS). RESULTS: In total, 92 patients (46 each in the treatment and control arms) completed the study. The groups did not differ in terms of age or stent indwelling time. Compared with the control group, the treatment group had significantly lower USSQ urinary symptom domain scores (24.6 vs 32.5; P < 0.001), better IPSS QoL scores (3.5 vs 4.4, P = 0.018), and lower VAS pain scores (2.0 vs 3.2; P < 0.001). They also had lower total body pain subscores (16.7 vs 22.0; P = 0.01) and lower additional pain subscores due to urinary tract infections (2.1 vs. 3.2; P = 0.01) in the USSQ. CONCLUSIONS: Highly concentrated HA/CS effectively improved urinary symptoms and pain, and reduced the need for additional medication or procedures after ureteric stent placement.

RESUMEN

Tuberculous peritonitis in pregnancy is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that is not easily diagnosed. The clinical presentations of tuberculous peritonitis are usually non-specific and mimic those of other diseases, such as ovarian malignancy or chronic liver disease, and this non-specificity can cause diagnostic delays and complications. The authors report the case of a 31-year-old primigravida woman who presented with uncontrolled fever, dyspnea, elevated liver enzymes, and mild abdominal distension at 13+2 weeks of gestation. At 14+2 weeks, a therapeutic abortion was conducted and tuberculous peritonitis was confirmed by laparoscopic excisional biopsy of peritoneal nodules and histopathologic examination. The patient recovered on antituberculosis therapy and abdomen and chest follow up radiographic findings have confirmed improvement.

RESUMEN

Schwannoma commonly arises from Schwann cells of the neural sheath, and is rare in the groin region. Here, we describe a vaginal schwannoma incidentally detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a patient with thigh pain. A 43-year-old woman presented with thigh pain with burning and tingling sensations in the medial aspect of her left thigh. MRI revealed a mass lesion of heterogeneous intensity 5.2 × 5.7 cm in the left vaginal wall. The mass was resected and histology revealed schwannoma.

RESUMEN

Mature cystic teratomas of the ovary (MCT) are usually observed in women of reproductive age with the most dreadful complication being malignant transformation which occurs in approximately 1% to 3% of MCTs. In this case report, we present a patient with squamous cell carcinoma which developed from a MCT during pregnancy. The patient was treated conservatively without adjuvant chemotherapy and was followed without evidence of disease for more than 60 months using conventional tools as well as positron emission tomography-computed tomography following the initial surgery. We report this case along with the review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the clinical significance of serum anti-human papillomavirus (HPV) antibodies and high-risk cervical HPV DNA in cervical neoplasia. METHODS: The study population comprised patients who were histopathologically diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 1 (n=64), CIN 2 and 3 (n=241), cervical cancer (n=170), and normal control participants (n=975). Cervical HPV DNA tests were performed through nucleic acid hybridization assay tests, and serum anti-HPV 16 and 18 antibodies were measured by competitive immunoassay. The associations of HPV DNA and anti-HPV antibodies were evaluated with demographic characteristics and compared according to the levels of disease severity. Anti-HPV antibodies were also investigated with clinicopathologic parameters, including survival data. RESULTS: Among various demographic characteristics, factors involving sexual behavior had a higher tendency of HPV DNA positivity and HPV seropositivity. Human papillomavirus DNA mean titer and positivity were both increased in patients with cervical neoplasia compared with those with normal control participants, but there was no statistical difference among types of cervical neoplasia. Serum anti-HPV 16 antibodies were also able to differentiate cervical neoplasia from a normal control participant and furthermore distinguished CIN 1 from CIN 2 and 3 (odd ratio 2.87 [1.43-5.78], P=.002). In cervical cancer, HPV 16 seropositivity was associated with prolonged disease-free survival according to the univariable analysis (hazard ratio=0.12 [0.01-0.94], P=.044). CONCLUSION: Serum anti-HPV 16 antibodies can distinguish cervical neoplasia from a normal control and has the advantage of identifying high-grade CIN. Moreover, in cervical cancer, HPV 16 seropositivity may be associated with a more favorable prognosis. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated associations between folate, vitamin B12, and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, and risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. METHODS: This multicenter case-control study enrolled 927 Korean women (440 controls, 165 patients with CIN 1, 167 patients with CIN 2/3, and 155 patients with cervical cancer, aged 20-75 years). RESULTS: Patients with cervical cancer had significantly lower median serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations vs. controls. Higher serum folate was significantly associated with lower cervical cancer risk (p for linear trend = 0.0058) with a trend for a lower CIN risk after multivariate adjustment. Low folate and the MTHFR 677 C > T variant were associated with a higher risk for CIN2/3 and cervical cancer vs. wild-type or heterozygous genotypes with high folate [OR, 2.39 (1.18-4.85) and 3.19 (1.43-7.13)]. Low vitamin B12 and the MTHFR 677 C > T variant also were associated with a higher risk for CIN 2/3 and cervical cancers [OR, 2.52 (1.17-5.42) and 2.40 (1-5.73)] vs. wild-type or heterozygous status with high vitamin levels. CONCLUSION: Serum folate concentration is inversely associated with the risk of cervical cancer, and the MTHFR variant genotype may increase CIN and cervical cancer risk in women with low folate or vitamin B12 status.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological malignancies in Korea, although the incidence has been declining in recent years. This study explored whether antioxidant vitamin intakes influenced the risk of cervical cancer. The association between antioxidant vitamin intakes and cervical cancer risk was calculated for 144 cervical cancer cases and 288 age-matched, hospital-based controls using unconditional logistic regression models. Cases reported statistically lower mean dietary intakes of vitamin A, beta -carotene, and vitamin C than did controls. Total intakes of vitamins A and E, which included both dietary and supplement intake, were also lower in cases. Those patients in the highest quartiles of dietary vitamin A, beta -carotene, and vitamin C intakes had statistically significantly lower cervical cancer risks than those in the lowest quartiles for vitamin A, beta -carotene, and vitamin C: odds ratio (OR) = 0.36 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.19-0.69), OR = 0.48 (CI = 0.26-0.88), and OR = 0.36 (CI = 0.18-0.69), respectively. Total intakes of vitamins A, C, and E were strongly inversely associated with cervical cancer risk: OR = 0.35 (CI = 0.19-0.65), OR = 0.35 (CI = 0.19-0.66), and OR = 0.53 (CI = 0.28-0.99), respectively. The findings support a role for increased antioxidant vitamin intake in decreasing the risk of cervical cancer. These associations need to be assessed in large prospective studies with long-term follow-up.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between cervical cancer risk and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in three one-carbon metabolism genes, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase (MTR), and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) in Korean women. Twelve SNPs were identified in MTHFR, MTR, and MTRR in the 927 case-control samples, which included 165 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN1), 167 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 and 3 (CIN2/3), 155 cervical cancer patients, and 440 normal controls. The frequencies of the genotypes and haplotypes were assessed in the controls, CINs, and cervical cancers. Individual carriers of the variant allele C of MTHFR A1298C (rs1801131) had a 0.64-fold [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.42-0.98] decreased risk for CIN2/3 compared with common homozygotes. However, no significant association was found between most other variants and cervical cancer risk. The results also identified an increased CIN1 risk in carriers with at least one copy of haplotype 3 in the MTHFR gene (odds ratio, 1.88; 95% CI: 1.03-3.42). In conclusion, there was no significant association between most SNPs in MTHFR, MTR, or MTRR and the risk of CIN and cervical cancer in Korean women. In addition, there was no significant association of MTHFR haplotypes with risk of CIN2/3 and cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), the primary antioxidant enzyme in mitochondria, plays a key role in protecting cells from oxidative stress. Furthermore, the MnSOD rs4880 polymorphism is associated with enzyme activity. The authors evaluated the interaction between MnSOD genotypes and cervical carcinogenesis risk and the modulating effects of serum antioxidant nutrient status (beta-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin/lutein, retinol, alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol). METHODS: Cases and controls for this study were recruited between June 2006 and July 2007 (263 controls, 84 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), 94 CIN 2/3, and 99 cases of cervical cancer). The MnSOD polymorphism at rs4880T/C was examined using SNaPshot assays. Serum antioxidant vitamin concentrations were measured by reverse-phase gradient high-pressure liquid chromatography. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated after adjusting for age, menopause, parity, oral contraceptive use, smoking and alcohol consumption. RESULTS: No association was found between the MnSOD rs4880 polymorphism and cervical cancer. However, genotypes significantly modified the risk of cervical cancer in association with the serum statuses of micronutrients (P(interaction)<0.05 for beta-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin/lutein, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol). Decreased CIN1 risk in association with the MnSOD rs4880 variant genotype was also observed particularly for subjects with higher beta-carotene and gamma-tocopherol levels. Similar results were observed for lycopene and alpha-tocopherol in relation to the risk of CIN2/3. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that a higher antioxidant micronutrients status may decrease the risk of CIN and cervical cancer and modify the effect of the MnSOD polymorphism on disease risk.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to document current practice patterns for the surgical treatment of endometrial cancer in Korea. METHODS: Questionnaires were distributed to 131 Korean gynecologic oncologists, all members of the Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group. Questions addressed extent of hysterectomy procedure, pelvic (PEN) or paraaortic (PAN) lymph node dissection, ovarian preservation, and omentectomy. RESULTS: Completed questionnaires were returned by 64.1% (84/131) of the oncologists at 50 institutes. Extrafascial hysterectomy (EH) was used by 32% of respondents and modified radical hysterectomy (MRH) or radical hysterectomy (RH) by 17%. Hysterectomy procedures were selectively employed based on tumor-related factors by 51% of the respondents. Laparoscopic hysterectomy was routinely utilized by 49% and was more commonly used by younger surgeons with 10 years of experience or less. PEN dissection was routinely utilized by 67% and was used selectively based on tumor-related factors by 33%. PAN dissection/biopsy was used either routinely (43%) or selectively based on tumor-related factors (43%). PAN dissection/biopsy had never been employed by 12% of the respondents. Sixty-nine percent of respondents stated that grossly normal looking ovaries can be preserved during surgery in young aged patients with early stage disease, and 29% stated that bilateral oophorectomy should be performed irrespective of age or stage. Omentectomy was routinely performed by 11% of respondents, and was selectively performed when extrauterine spread was present by 41%. CONCLUSION: Surgical procedures for the treatment of endometrial cancer are still not standardized among Korean gynecologic surgeons. Clinical trials to determine the benefits of the different surgical procedures should be developed.

Although the Hybrid Capture II (HC II) assay can detect 13 high-risk human papillomavirus (HPVs), it does not yield any genotype-specific information. We evaluated the performance of 4 HPV DNA tests, namely, HC II, Linear Array (LA), DNA chip, and cycle sequencing for their capacity to detect the presence of high-risk HPV DNA and HPV-associated cervical lesions. Seventy-six women who were referred to the colposcopy clinic for abnormal cytology were enrolled. The women were examined using liquid-based cytology, colposcopy-directed biopsy, and HPV DNA tests. After DNA extraction from a single sample, HPV DNA tests were performed by all 4 methods on the same specimen. The LA test has higher HPV-positive rates than HC II for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia I (83.3% vs 61.1%; P < 0.01) and for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia II and more severe lesions (100.0% vs 80.0%; P < 0.01). The concordance between the DNA chip and LA tests was 89.5%, confirming substantial agreement (kappa coefficient = 0.73), and the concordance between HC II and the DNA chip was 80.3%, also showing substantial agreement (kappa coefficient = 0.738). The concordance for 15 high-risk HPV genotypes between LA and sequencing was 82.5% with a kappa value of 0.536. Furthermore, the LA test was more sensitive in the detection of high-grade cervical lesions than HC II (100% vs 92.3%, P < 0.01). The LA test showed superior sensitivity in the detection of clinically relevant HPV infections and has proven to be an accurate tool for identifying individual HPV types, especially in cases of multiple HPV infections.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relation between plasma carotenoids, retinol and tocopherol levels and ovarian cancer risk in Korean women. DESIGN: Hospital-based case-control study. SETTING: Six tertiary medical institutes in Korea. POPULATION: Forty-five epithelial ovarian cancers and 135 age-matched controls. METHODS: Preoperative plasma concentrations of beta-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin plus lutein, retinol, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol were measured by reverse-phase, gradient high-pressure liquid chromatography. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated by tertiles to evaluate the effect of micronutrients on endometrial cancer risk after adjustment for body mass (BMI) index, menopause, parity, oral contraceptive use, smoking status, and alcohol consumption status. RESULTS: Women in the highest tertile for beta-carotene had 0.12-times the risk of ovarian cancer of in the lowest tertile (OR 0.12; 95%CI 0.04-0.36). Women with the highest tertiles of lycopene (OR 0.09; 95%CI 0.03-0.32), zeaxanthin/lutein (OR 0.21; 95%CI 0.09-0.52), retinol (OR 0.45; 95%CI 0.21-0.98), alpha-tocopherol (OR 0.23; 95%CI 0.10-0.53) and gamma-tocopherol (OR 0.28; 95%CI 0.11-0.70) had lower risk of ovarian cancer than women in the lowest tertiles. Results were consistent across strata of socio-epidemiologic factors. CONCLUSIONS: Micronutrients, specifically ss-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin, lutein, retinol, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol, may play a role in reducing the risk of ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between the plasma concentration of antioxidant micronutrients and endometrial cancer risk in Korean women. DESIGN: Hospital-based case-control study. SETTING: Seven tertiary medical institutes in Korea. POPULATION: Incidence of 28 endometrial cancer cases were identified and 140 age-matched controls selected for the same period. METHODS: Preoperative plasma concentrations of beta-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin plus lutein, retinol, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol were measured by reverse-phase, gradient high-pressure liquid chromatography. Conditional logistic regression was used to evaluate micronutrient effect after adjustment for body mass index (BMI), menopause, parity, oral contraceptive use, smoking status, and alcohol consumption status. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Effect of micronutrients on endometrial cancer risk. RESULTS: The mean concentration of plasma beta-carotene (p=0.001), lycopene (p=0.008), zeaxanthin plus lutein (p=0.031), retinol (p=0.048), and gamma-tocopherol (p=0.046) were significantly lower in endometrial cancer patients than in controls. Plasma levels of beta-carotene (p for trend=0.0007) and lycopene (p for trend=0.007) were inversely associated with endometrial cancer risk across tertiles. Women in the highest tertile of plasma beta-carotene and lycopene had a 0.12-fold (95% confidence intervals (CIs) 0.03-0.48) and 0.15-fold (95% CIs 0.04-0.61) decreased risk of endometrial cancer compared to women in the lowest tertile, respectively. Other micronutrients such as zeaxanthin plus lutein (p for trend=0.142), retinol (p for trend=0.108), alpha-tocopherol (p for trend=0.322), and gamma-tocopherol (p for trend=0.087) showed no association with endometrial cancer risk. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma levels of beta-carotene and lycopene are inversely associated with the risk of endometrial cancer in Korean women.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate the compatibility of the Digene media when performing the Roche linear array human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping test. METHODS: A total of 258 samples from 166 women were tested using the Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2) assay, the Cytyc media-based linear array test, and the Digene media-based linear array test. RESULTS: The results between the HC2 assay and the Digene media-based linear array test were highly concordant (kappa = 0.78). The Cytyc media-based linear array test and Digene media-based linear array test exhibited substantial agreement in 207/249 cervical samples (kappa = 0.62). The two genotyping test also showed substantial agreement for the detection of HPV genotypes 16, 18, 52, 58 and for 18 HPV genotypes including both high-risk, and possible high-risk genotypes (kappa = 0.74, 0.69, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: We found Digene media to be interchangeable with Cytyc media when performing the Roche linear array genotyping test. This may be clinically meaningful in that we could perform the Roche linear array genotyping test with the same Digene media among women, positive for HC2 assay without the need for a return visit.

The clinical diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is inexact. There are multiple potential symptoms and signs ascribable to PID as predicted by areas of inflammatory involvement. No symptoms or signs are pathognomonic for PID. The authors describe single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images of technetium-99m ((99m)Tc) ciprofloxacin imaging of patients with PID that showed foci of significantly increased uptake in the regions corresponding to the areas of clinical symptoms. We report two such cases of PID. We undertook physical exams, complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, Gram stains, wet smears, cultures, Mycoplasma genetic studies, Chlamydia cultures, and SPECT before treatment. During treatment we took laparoscopies, hysteroscopies, biopsies, and cultures. After the treatment, we repeated the same exams. (99m)Tc ciprofloxacin imaging is considered valuable in persons with symptoms of PID in whom diagnosis is difficult.

OBJECTIVE: Regarding vulvar cancer, a nomogram has been suggested for the prediction of relapse-free survival (RFS). While the nomogram has been developed and validated in a Western study, there was no validation in Korean population. Thus, we have undertaken the study to assess the applicability of nomogram for predicting RFS in Korean patients with vulvar cancer. METHODS: A total of 204 cases newly diagnosed as vulvar cancer between 1982 and 2006 were identified. Among them 70 cases were not eligible due to inappropriate cell type (40 cases) and radiation as primary therapy (30 cases). Forty-four cases were not evaluable due to inadequate data and persistent disease. Finally a total of 90 patients primarily treated by surgery were included for analysis. Variables including age and the characteristics of primary tumor, nodal status, and surgical margin were collected for predicting RFS based on nomogram, which was compared with actual RFS. A calibration plot was drawn showing the actual versus predicted probability for 6 groups of patients segregated according to their predicted probabilities. In addition, discrimination of the nomogram was quantified with the concordance index. RESULTS: Patients' mean age was 58 years and mean follow-up period was 47.9 months. Observed 2y- and 5y-RFS rates were 81% and 68%, respectively, corresponding to 79% and 72% in the original cohort. The trend line in calibration plot showed comparable concordance with an ideal line, having a slope of 1.04 for 2y-RFS (R(2)=.35) and 0.98 for 5y-RFS (R(2)=.80), respectively. The concordance index was 0.79 in the KGOG data set, which was improved to 0.82 with the data set limited to squamous cell carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The nomogram provides the predictive capacity for relapse-free survival in Korean patients with vulvar cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of primary tumor volume and uterine body invasion assessed by pre-treatment MRI for uterine cervical cancer patient treated with concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 106 patients with IB-IIIB cervical carcinoma was performed. Potential prognostic factors were stage, clinical tumor diameter, histology, age, pelvic lymph node, vaginal extension, parametrial invasion, tumor volume and uterine body invasion status. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS: The 5-year OS, DFS rate were 59.7 and 56.6%. Using multivariate analyses, a large tumor volume (>/=30 ml; P = 0.012) and uterine body invasion (P = 0.020) and positive pelvic lymph node (LN) enlargement (P = 0.040) showed a significantly unfavorable influence on OS. Using these three factors, patients were divided into four subgroups: the OS rates of patients with risk 0 (volume <30 ml, no uterine body invasion, and negative LN), risk 1 (one of these three factors), risk 2 (two of these three factors) and risk 3 (volume >/=30 ml, uterine body invasion, and positive LN) were 96.3, 77.5, 53.0 and 14.8%, respectively (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Tumor volume and uterine body invasion determined by MRI were significant prognostic factors for patients with cervical carcinoma. Pelvic lymph node enlargement diagnosed by CT also proved to be a significant prognostic factor in OS. Using these three parameters, we devised a practical and effective model to predict OS.

Ovarian dysgerminoma is usually hormonally inert, but when it contains syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells or undergoes malignant transformation, the level of estradiol might be elevated. A 6-year-old girl contracted ovarian dysgerminoma with precocious puberty, and her levels of beta-human chorionic gondaotropin, alpha-fetoprotein and estradiol were high. After resection of the tumor, levels of tumor markers became normal and precocious puberty disappeared. We report this unusual type of dysgerminoma with a brief review of the literature.

AIM: To investigate whether the biological process of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-labeled human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) may be monitored non-invasively by using in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with conventional 1.5-T system examinations in corpus cavernosa of rats and rabbits. METHODS: The labeling efficiency and viability of SPIO-labeled hMSCs were examined with Prussian blue and Tripan blue, respectively. After SPIO-labeled hMSCs were transplanted to the corpus cavernosa of rats and rabbits, serial T2-weighted MR images were taken and histological examinations were carried out over a 4-week period. RESULTS: hMSCs loaded with SPIO compared to unlabeled cells had a similar viability. For SPIO-labeled hMSCs more than 1 X 10 (5) concentration in vitro, MR images showed a decrease in signal intensity. MR signal intensity at the areas of SPIO-labeled hMSCs in the rat and rabbit corpus cavernosa decreased and was confined locally. After injection of SPIO-labeled hMSCs into the corpus cavernosum, MR imaging demonstrated that hMSCs could be seen for at least 12 weeks after injection. The presence of iron was confirmed with Prussian blue staining in histological sections. CONCLUSION: SPIO-labeled hMSCs in corpus cavernosa of rats and rabbits can be evaluated non-invasively by molecular MR imaging. Our findings suggest that MR imaging has the ability to test the long-term therapeutic potential of hMSCs in animals in the setting of erectile dysfunction.

A considerable number of adult Korean women avoid a Pap smear due to fear and discomfort of the pelvic examination. A reliable but noninvasive and comfortable screening method would considerably increase the participation rate. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of urine-based human papillomavirus (HPV) detection by oligonucleotide microarray, the results of HPV test from matched cervical swab specimens were compared. HPV DNA was detected in 70 of 100 cervical samples. HPV 16 was the most prevalent type (38/70), followed by types 18, 58, 52, 33, 35, 31, and 51. HPV DNA was identified in 47 of 90 urine samples. HPV 16 was the most prevalent type (30/45), followed by types 18, 52, 35, 51, 58, 33, and 56. The HPV detection rates of the cervical swabs increased in accordance with the severity of the cytologic and histologic diagnosis. The type specific agreement of HPV DNA tests between cervical swabs and urine was good in HPV 16 (kappa index=0.64 [95% CI: 0.50-0.79]), 18, 52, and 58 and fair in HPV 33 and 35. We propose that a urine HPV test is a valuable adjunctive method for a conventional Pap smear and can be used in population screening for cervical cancer in countries where it is difficult to obtain colposcopic specimens for cultural or religious reasons.
