RESUMEN

Ni-rich layered oxides have received significant attention as promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity. However, intergranular and intragranular cracks form at high state-of-charge (SOC) levels exceeding 4.2 V (vs. Li/Li+), representing a prominent failure mechanism of Ni-rich layered oxides. The nanoscale crack formation at high SOC levels is attributed to a significant volume change resulting from a phase transition between the H2 and H3 phases. Herein, in contrast to the electrochemical crack formation at high SOC levels, another mechanism of chemical crack and pit formation on a nanoscale is directly evidenced in fully lithiated Ni-rich layered oxides (low SOC levels). This mechanism is associated with intergranular stress corrosion cracking, driven by chemical corrosion at elevated temperatures. The nanoscopic chemical corrosion behavior of Ni-rich layered oxides during aging at elevated temperatures is investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, revealing that microcracks can develop through two distinct mechanisms: electrochemical cycling and chemical corrosion. Notably, chemical corrosion cracks can occur even in a fully discharged state (low SOC levels), whereas electrochemical cracks are observed only at high SOC levels. This finding provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex failure mechanisms of Ni-rich layered oxides and provides an opportunity to improve their electrochemical performance.

RESUMEN

Considering practical viability, Li-metal battery electrolytes should be formulated by tuning solvent composition similar to electrolyte systems for Li-ion batteries to enable the facile salt-dissociation, ion-conduction, and introduction of sacrificial additives for building stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces. Although 1,2-dimethoxyethane with a high-donor number enables the implementation of ionic compounds as effective interface modifiers, its ubiquitous usage is limited by its low-oxidation durability and high-volatility. Regulation of the solvation structure and construction of well-structured interfacial layers ensure the potential strength of electrolytes in both Li-metal and LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 (NCM811). This study reports the build-up of multilayer solid-electrolyte interphase by utilizing different electron-accepting tendencies of lithium difluoro(bisoxalato) phosphate (LiDFBP), lithium nitrate, and synthetic 1-((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)piperidine. Furthermore, a well-structured cathode-electrolyte interface from LiDFBP effectively addresses the issues with NCM811. The developed electrolyte based on a framework of highly- and weakly-solvating solvents with interface modifiers enables the operation of Li|NCM811 cells with a high areal capacity cathode (4.3 mAh cm-2 ) at 4.4 V versus Li/Li+ .

RESUMEN

Argyrodite-type Li6 PS5 Cl (LPSCl) has attracted much attention as a solid electrolyte for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) because of its high ionic conductivity and good mechanical flexibility. LPSCl, however, has challenges of translating research into practical applications, such as irreversible electrochemical degradation at the interface between LPSCl and cathode materials. Even for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), liquid electrolytes have the same issue as electrolyte decomposition due to interfacial instability. Nonetheless, current LIBs are successfully commercialized because functional electrolyte additives give rise to the formation of stable cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers, leading to supplementing the interfacial stability between electrolyte and electrode. Herein, inspired by the role of electrolyte additives for LIBs, trimethylsilyl compounds are introduced as solid electrolyte additives for improving the interfacial stability between sulfide-based solid electrolytes and cathode materials. 2-(Trimethylsilyl)ethanethiol (TMS-SH), a solid electrolyte additive, is oxidatively decomposed during charge, forming a stable CEI layer. As a result, the CEI layer derived from TMS-SH suppresses the interfacial degradation between LPSCl and LiCoO2 , thereby leading to the excellent electrochemical performance of Li | LPSCl | LiCoO2 , such as superior cycle life over 2000 cycles (85.0% of capacity retention after 2000 cycles).

RESUMEN

Marine mussels secrete adhesive proteins to attach to solid surfaces. These proteins contain phenolic and basic amino acids exhibiting wet adhesion properties. This study used a mussel-inspired hemostatic polymer, chitosan-catechol, to treat gastrointestinal bleeding caused by endoscopic mucosal resection in a heparinized porcine model. We aimed to evaluate the hemostatic efficacy and short-term safety of this wet adhesive chitosan-catechol. We used 15 heparinized pigs. Four iatrogenic bleeding ulcers classified as Forrest Ib were created in each pig using an endoscopic mucosal resection method. One ulcer in each pig was untreated as a negative control (no-treatment group). The other three ulcers were treated with gauze (gauze group), argon plasma coagulation (APC group), and chitosan-catechol hemostatic agent (CHI-C group) each. The pigs were sacrificed on Days 1, 5, and 10, and histological examination was performed (n = 5 per day). Rapid hemostasis observed at 2 min after bleeding was 93.3% (14/15) in the CHI-C group, 6.7% (1/15) in the no-treatment group, 13.3% (2/15) in the gauze group, and 86.7% (13/15) in the APC group. No re-bleeding was observed in the CHI-C group during the entire study period. However, a few re-bleeding cases were observed on Day 1 in the no-treatment, gauze, and APC groups and on Day 5 in the gauze and APC groups. On histological analysis, the CHI-C group showed the best tissue healing among the four test groups. Considering the results, chitosan-catechol is an effective hemostatic material with reduced re-bleeding and improved healing.

RESUMEN

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a widely used chemical for production of plastics. However occupational asthma (OA) caused by PVC has been reported only rarely. We report a 34-yr-old male wallpaper factory worker with OA due to PVC and nickel (Ni) whose job was mixing PVC with plasticizers. He visited the emergency room due to an asthma attack with moderate airflow obstruction and markedly increased sputum eosinophil numbers. A methacholine challenge test was positive (PC20 2.5 mg/mL). Bronchoprovocation tests with both PVC and Ni showed early and late asthmatic responses, respectively. Moreover, the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) was increased after challenge with PVC. To our knowledge, this is the first case of OA in Korea induced by exposure to both PVC and Ni. We suggest that eosinophilic inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of PVC-induced OA and that FeNO monitoring can be used for its diagnosis.
