RESUMEN

BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic affected many people worldwide, including those with chronic diseases. Our objective was to analyze its influence on medical care and the course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS In 2021, 81 patients in Poland with IBD completed an original anonymous questionnaire about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the course of their disease and mental status. The printed questionnaire was distributed to IBD patients treated at the Gastroenterology Outpatient Clinic of the University Clinical Hospital in Bialystok, and an online questionnaire was sent to patients via social media. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-squared test, with a significance level of P<0.05. RESULTS The study group consisted of 46 women and 35 men with a mean age of 32.42 years. Fifty-nine patients had ulcerative colitis and 22 had Crohn disease. Patients reported significant deterioration in medication availability (50.62%) and restricted access to gastroenterology outpatient clinics (51.90%) (P<0.05). Of patients who contracted COVID-19, 89.47% did not require hospitalization, 32.10% (26/81) were asymptomatic, mild, or moderate, despite immunosuppressive biological treatment (27.16%, 22/81), or steroids (18.52%, 15/81). Over 50% of respondents stated the pandemic negatively affected their mental state and 30% of them associated that with worsening IBD. CONCLUSIONS During the pandemic, respondents were mainly concerned with difficulties in accessing the gastroenterology clinic and limited drug availability. The pandemic negatively affected patients' mental state. In cases of COVID-19 disease, patients with IBD were mostly asymptomatic and did not require hospitalization, despite therapy affecting the immune system.

RESUMEN

Hollow glass microcapillaries or x-ray waveguides very efficiently confine x-rays to submicron or nanospots, which can be used for point projection imaging. However, x-ray beams exiting from such devices have ultranarrow cones that are limited by the critical angle for the total external reflection to a few milliradians. Narrow cone beams result in small fields of view, and the application of multiple-reflection optics to cone beam tomography is challenging. In this work, we describe a new nonconventional tomographic geometry realized with multiple confocal ultranarrow cone beams. The geometry enables an increase in the effective radiation cone to over 10° without resolution reduction. The proposed tomographic scans can be performed without truncations of the field of view or limitations of the angular range and do not require sample translations, which are inherent to other multibeam x-ray techniques. Volumetric imaging is possible with a simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique or with a fast approximate noniterative two-step approach. A proof-of-principle experiment was performed in the multipoint projection geometry with polycapillary optics and a multi-pinhole mask inserted upstream of the optics. The geometry is suited for phase-contrast tomography with polychromatic laboratory and synchrotron sources.

The multistep character of cancer progression makes it difficult to define a unique biomarker of the disease. Interdisciplinary approaches, combining various complementary techniques, especially those operating at a nanoscale level, potentially accelerate characterization of cancer cells or tissue properties. Here, we study a relation between the surface and biomechanical properties of melanoma cells, measured by mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In total, seven cell lines have been studied. Six of them were melanoma cells derived from various stages of tumor progression: (1) WM115 cells derived from a 55 year old female skin melanoma at a vertical growth phase (VGP) in the primary melanoma site, (2) WM793 cells established from the vertical growth phase (VGP) of a primary skin melanoma lesion, (3) WM266-4 cells established from a cutaneous skin metastasis detected in the same patient as WM115 cells, (4) WM239 cells derived from a cutaneous skin metastasis, (5) 1205Lu cells originated from a lung metastasis diagnosed in the same patient as WM793 cells, and (6) A375P-cells were derived from a solid malignant tumor located in the lung. As a reference cell line, human epidermal melanocytes from adult skin (primary cell line HEMa-LP) were used. Results reveal low, medium, and large deformability of melanoma cells originating from vertical growth phase (VGP), and skin and lung metastasis, respectively. These changes were accompanied by distinct outcome from principal component analysis (PCA). In relation to VGP melanoma cells, cells from skin and lung metastasis reveal similar or significantly different surface properties. The largest deformability difference observed for cells from VGP and lung metastasis was accompanied by the largest separation of unspecific changes in their surface properties. In this way, we show the evidence that biomechanical and surface biochemical properties of cells change in parallel, indicating a potential of being used as nanobiophysical fingerprints of melanoma progression.

Polycapillary devices focus X-rays by means of multiple reflections of X-rays in arrays of bent glass capillaries. The size of the focal spot (typically 10-100 µm) limits the resolution of scanning, absorption and phase-contrast X-ray imaging using these devices. At the expense of a moderate resolution, polycapillary elements provide high intensity and are frequently used for X-ray micro-imaging with both synchrotrons and X-ray tubes. Recent studies have shown that the internal microstructure of such an optics can be used as a coded aperture that encodes high-resolution information about objects located inside the focal spot. However, further improvements to this variant of X-ray microscopy will require the challenging fabrication of tailored devices with a well-defined capillary microstructure. Here, we show that submicron coded aperture microscopy can be realized using a periodic grid that is placed at the output surface of a polycapillary optics. Grid-enhanced X-ray coded aperture microscopy with polycapillary optics does not rely on the specific microstructure of the optics but rather takes advantage only of its focusing properties. Hence, submicron X-ray imaging can be realized with standard polycapillary devices and existing set-ups for micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.

Catamenial pneumothorax should be defined as recurrent accumulation of air in the pleural cavity in reproductive-age women without concomitant respiratory diseases. The sine qua non criterion is the occurrence of the pneumothorax in the period of 72 hours before or after the menses. Additional criteria include characteristic pleural lesions, right-sided occurrence, and coexistence of endometriosis. There are no radiological or pathological conditions allowing an exact confirmation of catamenial pneumothorax. In the case of catamenial pneumothorax, treatment failure most commonly consists in disease recurrence. It may occur even as late as several years after the initial treatment. The recurrence rate in patients undergoing surgery ranges from 8% to 40%. Finding and resecting the visible pleural lesions is of key importance during surgical treatment. Reconstruction of the diaphragm must be performed in every patient in whom diaphragmatic perforations are found. Hormonal therapy seems to be effective in sustaining the effects of surgical treatment.

Polycapillary x-ray focusing devices are built from hundreds of thousands of bent microcapillaries that are stacked into hexagonal arrays. We show that intrinsic point defects of the optics (e.g., missing or larger capillaries) lead to the formation of multiple x-ray images of an object positioned in the focal plane. These images can be recorded in parallel, and can provide spatial resolution that is limited by the defect size and not by the focal spot size. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we demonstrate submicron resolution, which has not yet been achieved with polycapillary focusing optics. Tailored optics with a controlled distribution of "defects" could be used for multimodal nanoscale x-ray imaging with laboratory setups.

RESUMEN

Popular chelators (desferrioxamine, SIH, EDTA, EGTA, DTPA, and NTA) were demonstrated to have antioxidant properties, being able to reduce ABTS radical cation and react with peroxyl radicals, peroxynitrite, and hypochlorite. Desferrioxamine and SIH were most potent antioxidants in all cases. These results point to the necessity of a careful interpretation of experiments in which the inhibition of free radical reactions by antioxidants is used as a proof of involvement of metal ions in a reaction.
