RESUMEN

The Nuremburg physician Johann Christoph Götz published some cases taken from his own practice. A comparison of the printed cases with notices from his practice journal shows that Götz has reproduced his cases mostly truthfully. Remarkable is the place of publication and his preference for unorthodox singular cases. He brought these cases up for discussion exclusively in periodicals. Götz intended no teaching activity with his approach but expected an appropriate exchange of knowledge.

RESUMEN

The medical institutions of Nuremberg were established quite early. The Collegium medicum were already founded in 1592. Though this board held responsibility for the supervision of pharmacies, the creation of Medizinalordnungen (medical legislations) and also had advisory functions, the physicians did not succeed in winning a prominent position. The spheres of competence between the different groups of medical practitioners were not yet clearly defined. Nevertheless the daily work of the practitioner Johann Christoph Götz (1688-1733) was going smoothly due to his cooperation with other doctors, surgeons, midwives and pharmacists.

RESUMEN

The institution of the town physician has been up to now discussed mostly on the limited scale of regional studies. In this article three early modern period town physicians are compared regarding their own understanding of their office. Their individual approach towards medical practice is examined on a broader spatio-temporal range within the context of medicalization, which was an integral part of the development of early modern territorial states. This comparison shows that beyond contemporary normative concepts town physicians also claimed particular roles within their social context. By achieving these, they often broadened or even transgressed the assumed delineation of the function subscribed to town physicians.
