RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The study aim was to report diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in treatment of a patient with cervical dysplasia and con- genital uterine anomaly. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old women with Müllerian anomaly - uterus duplex (bicorporal septate uterus) and Y-shaped endocervical canal was referred due to repeated abnormal Pap smears. She underwent endocervical curettage of both canals and the endocervical septum biopsy which revealed presence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) III. Cervical conization was considered technically unfeasible because of abnormal cervical anatomy (lesions deep in the cervical canal on the cervical bifurcation where the cervical wall is the thickest). Classical open abdominal hysterectomy was performed. Patient had two almost equally-sized, symmetrical uterine bodies connected in the isthmico-cervical region, with normal left and obstructed right hemi-vagina. Postoperative histopathological findings confirmed that dysplasia was located in the region where two endocervical canals conjoined. CONCLUSION: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with uterine anomalies has to be individualized, based on anomaly type, patient's age, reproductive history, and patient's preferences.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were as follows: to present the course and outcome of pregnancies complicated with fetal ventriculomegaly, determine the association between prenatal ultrasound diagnoses and definitive postnatal diagnosis or diagnoses after autopsy and additional analysis, and to monitor the psychomotor development of children born with ventriculomegaly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The survey was designed as retrospective study and included 62 pregnant women who were attending a regular ultrasound examinations at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Clinical Center of Serbia, or patients who were referred from other institutions in Serbia. RESULTS: Ventriculomegalies were divided into three groups: mild, moderate, and severe or hydrocephalus. The most common were severe ventriculomegalies, with 34 cases (55%). Of all pregnancies complicated with ventriculomegalies, 61% were terminated. Among those continued, 88% had normal psychomotor development. In 97% ultrasonographic diagnosis was confirmed. CONCLUSION: Majority of pregnancies complicated with ventriculomegaly were continued and most of the children born with anomalies had normal psychomotor development.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The study aim was to report an unusual case of a misplaced IUD in isthmico-cervical region causing partial uterine perforation and discuss literature data regarding such a condition. CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old women was referred to the present institution for IUD extraction. She was diagnosed with spontaneously misplaced IUD located in isthmico-cervical region of the uterus causing partial perforation. The time of dislocation was unknown, as she was completely asymptomatic for ten years after IUD application. More-over, she had no risk factors for device misplacement. The removal of IUD was uneventful. CONCLUSION: Isthmico-cervical misplacement of IUD, although rare, can occur at any time and can be asymptomatic. Thus, women with IUD should be annually checked-up in order to prevent possible IUD complications.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were as follows: to present the course and outcome of pregnancies complicated with neural tube defects, determine the association between prenatal ultrasound diagnoses, and definitive diagnoses after autopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The survey was designed as a retrospective study and included 24 pregnant women who were attending a regular ultrasound examinations at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Clinical Center of Serbia, or patients who were referred from other institutions in Serbia. RESULTS: Neural tube defects are divided into five subgroups: spina bifida, meningocele, myelomeningocele, acranius, and anencephaly. The most frequent in the present study was spina bifida with 67%. All pregnancies complicated with neural tube defects were terminated. CONCLUSION: Their clinical severity and uncertain cause make them priorities for further research, whether to better target primary preventive measures, to improve in-utero surgery for prenatal repair, or to identify the causative genes to provide an objective basis for individual genetic counselling.

RESUMEN

An allylthiosulfinate: beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complex was synthesized and characterized using X-ray crystallography, IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance. The microbiological activity of the complex was tested on available fungi (Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404) and bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027). In small concentrations, the complex inhibited the growth of the microorganisms tested. The most susceptible microorganism was Candida albicans ATCC 10231, and the least susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027.
