RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) are the highly damaging pests for various crops, and the prevalence of RKNs has posed serious threats to worldwide agricultural harvest, severely affecting global food security and ecosystem health. Traditional pesticide systems on controlling RKNs generally cause environmental hazards and phytotoxicity due to the excessive use of pesticides resulted from low utilization efficiency. And effective approaches with biosafe and efficient features are highly demanded to break away from the dilemma caused by RKNs. RESULTS: In this research, a nanopesticide system with root-targeted delivery function was developed to achieve effective prevention and control of RKNs. The nanocarriers (MSN-KH560-Gly) and the obtained nanopesticides (EB@MSN-KH560-Gly) were proved to be biosafe. Also, this nanopesticide system demonstrated sustained release behavior. The grafting of glycine (Gly) significantly improved the pesticide contents translocating to cucumber roots (about 304.7%). Besides, such root-targeted delivery function resulted in no root nodule in cucumber plants after the foliar application of these nanopesticides (prevention rate of 100%). In addition, the root nodule numbers of the infected cucumber plants decreased by 71.67%. CONCLUSION: Foliar application of these Gly-functionalized nanopesticides achieved effective prevention and control of RKNs due to the root-targeted delivery property inherent in this nanopesticide system, and such root-targeted delivery strategy opens a novel and efficient method to protect crops from RKN invasion and thus facilitates the development of sustainable agriculture. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

Soil salinization is one of the global ecological and environmental problems that are tremendously threatening to the sustainable development of agriculture and food supply. In this work, a facile strategy was proposed to enhance the salt stress resistance of plants by preparing salicylic acid (SA)-functionalized mesoporous silica nanocarriers loaded with emamectin benzoate (EB). The obtained nanopesticides demonstrated a particle size of less than 300 nm. As an endogenous plant hormone, the grafting of SA in this nanopesticide system improved the uptake and translocation of pesticides in cucumber plants by 145.06%, and the applications of such nanopesticides enhanced the salt stress resistance of plants. This phenomenon was accounted for by the SA-functionalized nanopesticides increasing the superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities (640 and 175%, respectively) and reducing the malondialdehyde content (54.10%), correspondingly alleviating the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and cell damage in plants. The above results were also confirmed by Evans blue staining and NBT staining experiments on cucumber leaves. In addition, these nanopesticides exhibited high insecticidal toxicity, and they also demonstrated biosafety toward nontarget organisms due to their sustained release property. Therefore, this work developed a biosafe SA-functionalized nanopesticide system, and these newly developed nanopesticides have potential in the agricultural field for enhancing salt stress resistance of plants.

RESUMEN

As the number and length of high-speed railway tunnels increase in China, implicit defects such as insufficient lining thicknesses, voids, and poor compaction have become increasingly common, posing a serious threat to train operation safety. It is, therefore, imperative to conduct a comprehensive census of the defects within the tunnel linings. In response to this problem, this study proposes a high-speed railway tunnel detection method based on vehicle-mounted air-coupled GPR. Building on a forward simulation of air-coupled GPR, the study proposes the F-K filtering and BP migration algorithms based on the practical considerations of random noise and imaging interference from the inherent equipment. Through multi-dimensional quantitative comparisons, these algorithms are shown to improve the spectrum entropy values and instantaneous amplitude ratios by 4.6% and 11.6%; and 120% and 180%, respectively, over the mean and bandpass filtering algorithms, demonstrating their ability to suppress clutter and enhance the internal signal prominence of the lining. The experimental results are consistent with the forward simulation trends, and the verification using the ground-coupled GPR detection confirms that air-coupled GPR can meet the requirements of high-speed railway tunnel lining inspections. A comprehensive GPR detection model is proposed to lay the foundation for a subsequent defect census of high-speed railway tunnels.

RESUMEN

International trade connections with COVID-19 impeding the development of the logistics industry in express delivery, the world has become an inseparable part of daily life. To improve protection competency, there is a need for effective research on logistics warehouse fire accident alarms. The goal of this study is to create a novel fire risk evaluation method for fire safety managers in logistics warehouses. The Gustav method is used to convert a plane model to a stereoscopic model. Hazards to construction, hazards to life, and fire rescue competency are all taken into account. The empirical study used JingDong Gu'an logistics park as a case study, and the evaluation results revealed differences in fire risk levels between the two warehouses. The results show that the transmit warehouse had a higher fire risk level than the sorting warehouse. The method describes the total risk of a warehouse fire. It is appropriate for the various types and processes found in modern logistics warehouses. The results of the developed 3D-Dynamic method demonstrate the model's feasibility and practicability even to laypeople with limited professional knowledge.

RESUMEN

Heavy metals have the potential to influence the transmission of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, the effect on AMR caused by heavy metals has not been clearly revealed. In this study, we used a microcosm experiment and metagenomics to examine whether common levels of Cu and Zn in pig manure influence AMR transmission in manured soil. We found that the abundance of 204 ARGs significantly increased after manure application, even though the manure did not contain antibiotic residuals. However, the combined addition of low Cu and Zn (500 and 1000 mg/kg, respectively) only caused 14 ARGs to significantly increase, and high Cu and Zn (1000 and 3000 mg/kg, respectively) caused 27 ARGs to significantly increase. The disparity of these numbers suggested that factors within the manure were the primary driving reasons for AMR transmission, rather than metal amendments. A similar trend was found for biocide and metal resistance genes (BMRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). This study offers deeper insights into AMR transmission in relation to the effects of manure application and heavy metals at commonly reported levels. Our findings recommend that more comprehensive measures in controlling AMR in the pig industry are needed apart from restricting heavy metal additions.

RESUMEN

Intensive pig farming relies on the extensive use of heavy metal additions to feed and this poses a threat to the environment that receives the manure. Pig manure is still continually disposed of improperly and many farms do not possess waste treatment facilities. In this study, two typical pig farms that lacked waste treatment facilities in Beijing, northern China, and two in Hefei, southern China were selected to determine the distributions of Cu, Zn, and Cd in the environment near the farms. Our results indicated that Cu, Zn, and Cd levels were 1.28-36.60, 1.02-19.49, and 1.04-219.56 times their local background values, respectively. The order of frequency of individual metals that could potentially pose ecological risks to soils was Cd > Cu > Zn. All four pig farms were rated as possessing considerable or high risk according to the average contamination degree (Cd). Our RDA result indicated that the heavy metals did not show a significant correlation with the bacterial community composition in the soils. Additionally, groundwater near these pig farms was safe for drinking. Our results indicated that detailed investigations are necessary to determine the extent of heavy metal pollution in soils adjacent to pig farms that lack proper wastewater treatment facilities. This study offers further and deeper insights into the heavy metal pollution from intensive pig farms to the adjacent soils.

RESUMEN

In this work, a novel antibacterial nanocomposite system was developed using mesoporous silica (MSN) as an effective nanocarrier, and the resultant nanocomposites demonstrated remarkable antibacterial performance due to the synergistic effect among nano zinc oxides, silver nanoparticles, and polydopamine (PDA). The successful synthesis of MSN/ZnO@PDA/Ag nanocomposites was confirmed. The physicochemical properties and the morphologies of these nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that the particle size increased along with the evolution of these nanocomposites. Besides, nano zinc oxides were formed in the nanochannels of mesoporous silica with a particle size about 2 nm, and that of silver nanoparticle was less than 50 nm. In addition, the results revealed that the presence of mesoporous silica could effectively prevent the formation of large-size silver nanoparticles and facilitate their well dispersion. Due to the synergistic effect among nano zinc oxides, silver nanoparticles, and polydopamine, these nanocomposites exhibited remarkable antibacterial performance even at a low concentration of 313 ppm, and the antibacterial mechanism was also elucidated. Therefore, this work provides a facile and controllable approach to preparing synergistically antibacterial nanocomposites, and the remarkable antibacterial performance make them suitable for practical applications.

RESUMEN

Primary liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer and the third leading cause of malignancy-related death worldwide in 2020, with 75-85% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Evidences have verified that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play key roles in HCC onset and development. However, the function and mechanism of lncRNA insulin-like growth factor 2-antisense (IGF2-AS) in HCC remain unclear. Herein, IGF2-AS expression profile in HCC patients was first investigated based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and local HCC patients, followed by prognostic value evaluation using Kaplan-Meier method; then, the bioinformatics analysis, dual-luciferase reporter assay, Spearman correlation assay, function gain, and loss with rescue experiments were applied to investigate the biological function and the involved molecular mechanisms of IGF2-AS in HCC oncogenesis and development. Our results showed that IGF2-AS expression was significantly down-regulated in HCC cells and tissues; lower IGF2-AS expression was significantly associated with poor prognosis of HCC patients; IGF2-AS over-expression inhibited the viability, colony formation, invasion, and migration, while promoted apoptosis in vitro, and inhibited HCC xenograft growth in vivo; IGF2-AS sponged microRNA-520h (miR-520h) to up-regulate IGF2-AS expression, and miR-520h over-expression or cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1A (CDKN1A) silencing reversed IGF2-AS reduced aggressive behaviors of HCC cells. In conclusion, IGF2-AS is a tumor-suppressor in HCC, and lower IGF2-AS expression is associated with poor prognosis of HCC patients; IGF2-AS inhibits HCC oncogenesis and development by IGF2-AS/miR-520h/CDKN1A pathway. Therefore, IGF2-AS may serve as a new biomarker for HCC management.
