RESUMEN

The purpose behind the innovation of modified nasoalveolar moulding appliance was to achieve simultaneous anteroposterior and transverse correction in bilateral cleft cases with minimal vomeroid bending. This paper presents a 3D Versascrew appliance that has been used for presurgical nasoalveolar moulding in a 15-day-old neonate with bilateral cleft. Treatment was initiated at 30 days and continued for 90 days following which mild expansion of posterior maxilla with establishment of arch continuity and concomitant improvement in nasal morphology was achieved towards the end.

RESUMEN

The Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND) is a widely used test for assessing physical nicotine dependence. However, there is a need to assess the psychometric properties of FTND to assess its role in treatment outcome studies. The aim of the present investigation was to review the psychometric properties of the FTND. A broad systematic literature search was performed from Pubmed and PsycINFO from 2000 to 2019. The publication language was limited to English. Two review authors performed the study selection and extracted the data. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the Rayyan software used to screen relevant studies. A total of 1471 articles retrieved from the search, of which 33 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Eleven studies related to testing the reliability of the FTND were analyzed. Twenty-five studies evaluated the Cronbach alpha of the test. Analysis of the studies revealed the questionable psychometric qualities of the adapted versions of the test across different cultures and ethnicity. It also suggested that it may not tap the appropriate constructs that would predict smoking patterns in light smokers, e-cigarette smokers, and smokeless tobacco users. Thus, further research must focus on improving the psychometric properties of FTND to enhance the measurement of nicotine dependence.

RESUMEN

Gaming and gambling have been studied in terms of similarity of its manifestations. There is a dearth of empirical-based evidence for the exploration of pathways to understand the shift from gaming to gambling. A 23-year-old male from a nuclear family was assessed using clinical interview for the pathways for shifting from gaming to gambling. The pathways were personality predispositions, maladaptive coping, interpersonal distress, peer pressure, variable reward anticipation, addiction characteristics in the form of craving, loss of control and use despite having consequences. These findings suggest that there is a need to create awareness among young adults about these potential causes related to transition from gaming to gambling.

RESUMEN

The liquid phase esterification of phenyl acetic acid with p-cresol over different metal cation exchanged montmorillonite nanoclays yields p-cresyl phenyl acetate. Different metal cation exchanged montmorillonite nanoclays (M n+ = Al3+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Cu2+) were prepared and the catalytic activity was studied. The esterification reaction was conducted by varying molar ratio of the reactants, reaction time and catalyst amount on the yield of the ester. Among the different metal cation exchanged catalysts used, Al3+-montmorillonite nanoclay was found to be more active. The characterization of the material used was studied under different techniques, namely X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The product obtained, p-cresyl phenyl acetate, was identified by thin-layer chromotography and confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The regeneration activity of used catalyst was also investigated up to fourth generation.

RESUMEN

AIM: Sugarcane press residue (SPR), a by-product of sugarcane industry, which is rich in inorganic salts was assessed at different levels in both soya based and fish based diets of layers for egg shell and yolk quality characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SPR was incorporated in 32-week-old white leghorn layer diets at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% either in the soya based or fish based diets to form T1 to T8 diets, respectively. Each diet was offered to five replicates of four laying hens each constituting a total of one sixty birds kept for 84 days under colony cages. RESULTS: Mean egg shell thickness obtained from eggs of experimental hens measured was 0.342, 0.329, 0.320, 0.322, 0.319, 0.332, 0.328 and 0.336 mm in T1 through T8 groups, respectively. About the main factor effects, both showed non-significant results. Similarly, influence of different treatment diets, in imparting colour to the yolks, was found to be non-significant (p>0.05) at different 28-day time intervals. Further, the average yolk index values ranged non-significantly from 0.360 (T6) to 0.383 (T4). CONCLUSION: The SPR can be incorporated into layer diet as a source of inorganic as well as organic nutrients without affecting its egg quality characteristics.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim was to study the effect of supplementation of lysine producing microbes (LPM) as an in vivo source of lysine on performance and egg quality characters of post-peak layers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: BIS (1992) specified diets (except crude protein [CP] and lysine) were prepared using either soybean meal (SBM) or groundnut extractions (GNE) or sunflower extractions (SFE) with 16 and 15% CP resulting in six control diets. Further, each control diet was fortified with either synthetic lysine or LPM to meet BIS (1992) specified lysine requirement resulting in the set of 12 test diets. Each of the eighteen diets was offered to quadruplets groups of 4 post-peak (52 weeks) commercial laying hens in each. The trial lasted for 119 days. RESULT: The results revealed that the feed consumption and body weight changes and Roche yolk color and yolk index were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) different among different treatments. However, egg production, feed efficiency, egg weight, egg shape index, Haugh unit score, albumen index and shell thickness, and net returns remained non-significant (p ≤ 0.05) among different treatments. Among main factors, protein level (16% and 15% CP) made a significant (p ≤ 0.05) difference in egg production (79.6 and 75.1%) and feed efficiency (2.64 and 2.81 kg feed/kg egg mass, respectively). Among protein source GNE- and SFE-based diet fed groups showed significantly (p < 0.0%) higher feed consumption and body weight gain than SBM based diets fed birds. Yolk color (7.0, 7.3 and 7.3, respectively) and yolk index (0.40, 0.38 and 0.43, respectively) were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) different from the protein sources. CP level and Protein source interaction effects showed significant differences in albumen index and Haugh unit score. CONCLUSION: Optimum level of protein (16% CP) and GNE as a source of protein tended to be superior in increasing the performance and egg characteristics of post-peak layers and supplementation of lysine in either synthetic or LPM form found to be beneficial in optimizing their performance.

RESUMEN

Neurofibromatosis Type I (NFI) is a relatively common hereditary, autosomal dominant neurocutaneous condition. It is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour arising from Schwann cells and peripheral fibroblasts. Even though it is a neurocutaneous disorder, NF I has significant skeletal manifestations. Oral and maxillofacial skeletal structures are also often involved in the form of deepening of sigmoid notch, enlarged mandibular canal and notching of inferior border of mandible. In this paper, we are reporting a female patient of NF I who presented with a notching in the posterior border of ascending ramus of mandible.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a simple screening tool for identifying developmental delay among children of 0-6 y of age in the community. METHODS: The 51-items of Trivandrum Development Screening Chart for children of 0-6 y [TDSC (0-6 y)], were carefully prepared from the norms in various existing developmental charts/scales, by experts keeping in mind the face validity and content validity. The criterion validity was assessed in a community sample of 1,183 children of 0-6 y with a mean age of 35.38 mo (SD of 19.25) including 597 (50.46%) boys and 586 (49.54%) girls. TDSC (0-6 y) was validated against Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) as the 'Reference Standard'. RESULTS: When one item delay in TDSC (0-6 y) was considered as 'TDSC delay' (test positive), the sensitivity and specificity of TDSC (0-6 y) was found to be 84.62% (95% CI: 71.92-93.12) and 90.8% (95% CI: 88.97-92.43) respectively with a Negative Predictive Value of 99.23% (95% CI: 98.48-99.67) and LR (negative) of 0.17(95% CI: 0.09-0.32). The test-retest and inter-rater reliability [an interclass correlation (ICC) of 0.77 for test-retest and ICC of 0.97 for inter-rater] were good and acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: TDSC (0-6 y) is a simple, reliable and valid screening tool for use in the community to identify children between 0 and 6 y with developmental delay, enabling early intervention practices.

RESUMEN

Pure nickel electrodes can be used as biosensors especially for sensing and estimating acetylcholine neurotransmitter. In the present work, a good electrochemical sensor was developed by electroplating nano nickel oxide reinforced nickel on graphite substrate. The morphology of the working electrode surface was studied by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrochemical and biological performance of the modified electrode was characterized by polarization studies in different media. The present modified electrode showed good sensing performance with a response time as low as 8s during sensing and estimation of acetylcholine. The sensitivity of the modified electrode was 34.88 microA/(microM cm(2)).

RESUMEN

Six strains of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) classified into subtypes A, B and D were examined by cross-neutralization test using Kumi-1 cells (CD4+, CD8+, and CD9+), an interleukin-2 dependent feline T-lymphocyte cell line. Neutralizing activities against these six FIV strains were also investigated in 50 FIV-antibody-positive serum samples collected from different geographical regions in Japan. The cross-neutralization test revealed that antisera against the six strains tended to possess high neutralizing activity against the homologous strain. These antisera were also capable of neutralizing viral strains of the same subtype. However, some of the antisera were broadly crossreactive with all six FIV strains. Serum samples collected from naturally infected cats in the field showed various neutralization patterns for the six FIV strains. These observations reflect the antigenic diversity in FIV strains prevailing in the field. There were also broadly crossreactive serum samples, and 36% (18/50 samples) showed neutralization for all six FIV strains.

RESUMEN

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) microspheres containing c. 3% bovine serum albumin (BSA) were prepared by melt encapsulation and solvent evaporation techniques. PCL, because of its low Tm, enabled the melt encapsulation of BSA at 75 degrees C thereby avoiding potentially toxic organic solvents such as dichloromethane (DCM). Unlike the solvent evaporation method, melt encapsulation led to 100% incorporation efficiency which is a key factor in the microencapsulation of water-soluble drugs. Examination of the stability of the encapsulated protein by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) demonstrated that protein integrity was unaffected by both methods of encapsulation. In vitro release of the protein into phosphate buffer examined at 37 degrees C from microspheres prepared by both techniques showed that the release rate from melt-encapsulated microspheres was somewhat slower compared to the release from solvent-evaporated spheres. Both released around 20% of the incorporated protein in 2 weeks amounting to approximately 6.5 micrograms mg-1 of microspheres. Although the diffusivity of macromolecules in PCL is rather low, it is shown that PCL microspheres are capable of delivering sufficient quantity of proteins by diffusion for prolonged periods to function as a carrier for many vaccines. Unlike poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) polymers which generate extreme acid environments during their degradation, the delayed degradation characteristics of PCL do not generate an acid environment during protein release and, therefore, may be advantageous for sustained delivery of proteins and polypeptides.
