One of the suprahyoid muscles is the digastric muscle which comprises anterior and posterior bellies joined by an intermediate tendon. Because of its close relationship with the submandibular gland, lymph nodes, and chief vessels of the neck, detailed knowledge about the morphometry of the digastric muscle is essential. The objective of the current cross-sectional evaluative study is to record morphometry along with the digastric muscle's origin, insertion, and variability. Forty human cadavers (25 males and 15 females) were dissected, and the head and neck regions were studied in detail. The attachment of the digastric muscle anterior belly to the digastric fossa of the mandible was noted, and the distal attachment of the posterior belly to the mastoid notch was traced. The length of the anterior belly from the digastric fossa to its intermediate tendon and the length of the posterior belly from the intermediate tendon to its mastoid attachment were measured. There is a fair correlation between the length of the neck and the length of the anterior and posterior belly. The study also identified two cases of bilateral accessory bellies of the anterior belly of the digastric. Normal morphometric data is provided by this study on details of the digastric muscle. It is significant from a clinical and surgical point of view as the muscle lies in proximity to the important structures of the neck.

Background: The pyramidalis muscle is a tiny triangular-shaped muscle that is located in the anterior abdominal wall, which originates from the body of the pubis and pubic symphysis and is inserted into linea alba. This study aimed to measure the different parameters of the pyramidalis muscle in adult cadavers. Methods: This study was carried out on 31 adults (26 males and five females) 10% formalin embalmed cadavers of both sexes from the Department of Anatomy at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Results: The mean length of the right pyramidalis muscle was 64.44 ± 12.52 mm and the left pyramidalis muscle was 64.73 ± 12.81 mm. The mean width of the muscle was 15 ± 4.18 mm and 15.03 ± 3.52 mm on the right and left sides, respectively. The mean thickness of the muscle was 1.32 ± 0.55 mm and 1.4 ± 0.80 mm on the right and left sides, respectively. The distance between the umbilicus to pubic symphysis ranged from 130-192 mm and their mean was calculated to be 159.77 ± 15.36. The distance between the umbilicus and the apex of the muscle ranged from 72-123 mm. Conclusions: The measured parameters like length, width and thickness may help the surgeons to locate the muscle during infra umbilical surgeries.

Awareness of the formation and termination of the head & neck's superficial vein, such as jugular veins, are imperative for anatomists, surgeons, and radiologists during interventional procedures. We report an uncommon variation in the formation of the retromandibular vein and external jugular vein (EJV) in an embalmed male cadaver's right side. The joining of the facial vein and superficial temporal vein within the parotid gland formed the retromandibular vein (RMV). The anterior division joined with the submental vein forming an anomalous venous trunk. The anomalous vein united with the EJV forming a common trunk in the lower third of the neck and terminated into the subclavian vein. We compared the available literature and justified the embryological development of this rare variation.

AIM: To outline the variations in morphology and a few clinically relevant morphometric parameters of the sacral hiatus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 50 dry human sacra, of unspecified sex, in the Department of Anatomy at a medical college in South India. The sex was determined using the sacral, auricular and curvature index. The variations and morphometry of the sacra were documented and tabulated. RESULTS: It was observed that the inverted U shape of sacral hiatus was common in both males (n=24) and females (n=26). There was one female sacrum with complete dorsal wall agenesis. In males, the length of the apex of sacral hiatus from 1st sacral spine was 5.82 cm ± 1.27 and in females, it was 6.02 cm ± 1.08. Sacral hiatus depth in males was 0.56 cm ± 0.16 and in females 0.54 cm ± 0.14. The width of sacral hiatus at the cornua in males was 1.42 cm ± 0.29 and in females, it was 1.46 cm ± 0.38 CONCLUSION: Knowledge of incidences of variations in the morphology and morphometry of the sacral hiatus across various population groups is paramount for the success and reliability of epidural anesthesia. The success rate of such procedures depends on the clinicians' understanding of the discrepancy in the sacral hiatus.

Human cerebellum plays a vital role in motor coordination, regulation of muscle tone and maintaining the equilibrium of the body. It seldom shows anatomical/morphological variations. Herein, we report the presence of a small additional lobe projecting out on the superior surface of the right cerebellar hemisphere in the para-vermal area in an adult male cadaver. There was a notch on the tentorial surface of the occipital lobe of the right cerebral hemisphere, corresponding to the additional lobe of cerebellum. The additional lobe was histologically normal, with no evidence of any tumour cells. Knowledge of this variation is of importance to radiologists, neuroanatomists and neurosurgeons.

BACKGROUND: Chronic administration of steroids like dexamethasone produces symptoms including weight loss and skeletal muscle dysfunction. Similar events are reported in chronic or high-intensity exercises, that can lead to fatigue and muscle damage. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf extract was evaluated against dexamethasone (Dex) and exercise (Exe)-induced muscle changes in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six groups each containing 6 rats, namely normal, Dex control, Exe Control, Dex + M. oleifera leaf extract (300mg/kgp.o.), Dex + Exe, Dex + Exe + M. oleifera leaf extract were assessed in the study. Dex was administered at 0.6 mg/kg i.p. daily for 7 days. Exercise was given for a total of 10 days after 30 minutes of dosing using treadmill equipment for 900 seconds at speed 18 m/min. Animals were assessed for variation in body weight, muscular endurance using treadmill, locomotor activity using actophotometer, motor coordination using rotarod on day zero, and day seven. Hemidiaphragm of rats were isolated and used for evaluation of the glucose uptake. Gastrocnemius muscle was isolated and subjected to hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS: Dex and Exe control animals showed a significant decrease in skeletal muscle activity when compared to normal control animals in the actophotometer test. Improvement in endurance were seen in Dex + M. oleifera leaf extract, and Dex + exercise + M. oleifera leaf extract groups compared to Dex control group. Improvement in locomotor activity was seen in Dex group subjected to exercise and was significant when treated with M. oleifera leaf extract. Histology reports were in accordance with the functional parameters. CONCLUSION: M. oleifera leaf extract supplemented with exercise showed a reversal in the dexamethasone-induced functional impairment in skeletal muscles.

Schwannomas are typically benign tumours of the peripheral nerves. However, they seldom arise from the obturator nerve. We report a case of an uncommon swelling (2.5 × 3.5 cm) in a 65-year-old male cadaver, found during a routine dissection session for first Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery students in the Department of Anatomy, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India, in 2019. It was seen originating from the left obturator nerve in the pelvis at the level of the sacral promontory. Histopathological investigation revealed a schwannoma. The hypocellular tumour was arranged in a sweeping fascicle pattern with patches of myxoid degeneration. Obturator schwannomas, though rare, can exist in cadavers, as seen in the present case. Hence, it should be considered as a differential diagnosis for clinical cases of pelvic masses and eliminated only after thorough radiological examination. Knowledge about the existence of such schwannomas is therefore essential.

BACKGROUND: The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is the chief stabilizer of the lateral aspect of the knee to varus forces. Studies have confirmed the function of the anterolateral ligament (ALL), which improves the lateral knee stability by preventing excessive internal tibial rotation. Clinically, a persistent instability following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction may be due to damage to the anterolateral structures. The finding has created a novel interest in anterolateral extra-articular operations. METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study involved 42 dissected adult knees. The variations in morphology and morphometry of the LCL were identified and classified. The prevalence and the variabilities in the ALL were also noted. RESULTS: The variations in the shape of the LCL were classified into four types: (1) cord, (2) band, (3) mixed, and (4) inverted Y shaped, with a frequency of 69.04, 26.20, 2.38, and 2.38% of specimens, respectively. The cord type measured 50.4 ± 2.7 mm in length and 5 ± 0.9 mm in width. In comparison, the band type measured 50.1 ± 4.2 mm in length and 9 ± 1.6 mm in width. The ALL was identified in four (9%) of the specimens with a mean length of 35 ± 0.9 mm. Two types of ALL were observed, membranous wideband and distinct cord-like ALL. CONCLUSION: The anatomy of the lateral structures of the knee is inconsistent. The study has attempted to classify the different shapes of the LCL along with the frequency and prevalence of the ALL. Orthopedic surgeons and radiologists must note the LCL morphology and prevalence of the ALL due to their clinical implications.

Considering the cognitive impairment induced by temozolomide (TMZ) in glioblastoma survivors, the present study was aimed to evaluate the protective effect of dehydrozingerone (DHZ) against TMZ-induced cognitive impairment (chemobrain) and C6 cell line-induced glioma in male Wistar rats. In both chemobrain and glioma models, TMZ was administered at a dose of 18 mg/kg i.v every 5th day and DHZ at a dose of 100 mg/kg p.o. daily. Additionally, glioma was induced by intracerebral injection of 5 × 104 C6 rat glioma cells in the cortex in the glioma model. Upon disease induction and treatment with TMZ + DHZ, spatial memory was assessed by the Morris water maze (MWM) test and episodic memory by the novel object recognition test (NORT). The induction of glioma was confirmed by histology of the cortex. Hippocampus and frontal cortex were subjected to antioxidant evaluation. Significant loss of spatial and episodic memory was observed with TMZ treatment which was significantly restored by DHZ. DHZ showed significant improvement in oxidative stress markers reversed the histopathological features in the cortex. TMZ-induced elevation of the glutathione level was also reversed by DHZ, indicating the role of DHZ in the reversal of TMZ resistance. In the glioma model, the improvement in cognition by DHZ correlated with the decrease in tumor volume. Altogether, the study results reveal the role of TMZ in worsening the memory and DHZ in reversing it, besides, improving its anticancer potential.

Considering dopamine-enhancing effect of (+)-catechin, the present study was designed to evaluate dopamine-2 (D2) receptor agonistic and phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) enzyme inhibitory effects in in silico and effect on male sexual function of Sprague Dawley rats in vivo. (+)-Catechin and standard (sildenafil and bromocriptine) were docked using Autodock Vina 1.1.2 and visualised by UCSF Chimera 1.14. Significant interactions in terms of binding energies were observed for catechin with both proteins. In in vivo study, the rats were dosed orally for 54 days with (+)-catechin hydrate (50 mg/kg), sildenafil citrate (standard, 4 mg/kg) and carboxymethylcellulose (vehicle, 0.25% w/v). The aphrodisiac effects were evaluated on the day 14, 28, 42 and 54 using the behavioural parameters of mounting and intromission. After the study, animals were sacrificed and testes and spermatozoa were assessed for safety profile. Results showed a significant increase in mount and intromission frequencies and a significant reduction in mount and intromission latencies in the catechin group on all tested days when compared to vehicle control. (+)-Catechin was found to be safe on histology of testes, sperm count, sperm motility and sperm morphology parameters. In conclusion, catechin demonstrated an enhancement in sexual behaviour without eliciting toxicity on the male reproductive system in rats.

BACKGROUND: Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition has been found to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Previous studies have reported that Cinnamyl sulfonamide hydroxamate derivatives possess non-selective HDAC inhibition. OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to screen three selected Cinnamyl sulfonamide hydroxamate derivatives, NMJ-1, NMJ-2, and NMJ3, for in vitro anti-inflammatory response by assessing the expression of pNF-κB in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory changes on RAW 264.7 cells, and in vivo anti-inflammatory response in acetic acid (AA) and 2.4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced colitis models in Wistar rats. METHOD: AA-induced colitis was produced in Wistar rats by intra-colonic administration of 1 ml AA. DNCBinduced colitis was produced by spraying 250 µL DNCB in acetone (20g/L) on the nape of the rats for 14 days, followed by the intracolonic administration on day 15. Drugs were administered for three days after the induction of colitis. RESULTS: In vitro anti-inflammatory effect was observed by NMJ1 and NMJ2 through a significant decrease in pNF-κB overexpression-induced by LPS. Similar effect was observed in anti-colitis response by NMJ2 in both models by reversing the colitis-induced changes in length, weight, anti-oxidant profile and histopathology of the colon. CONCLUSION: NMJ2 was found to be most effective among the tested compounds as an anti-inflammatory agent in both in vitro and in vivo inflammatory studies.

BACKGROUND: The ureter shows natural constrictions in its course, and these are the potential site for the impaction of the renal calculus. Giant ureteral stones are associated with insidious growth and late presentation, often leading to renal failure. CASE PRESENTATION: In the present case, we observed a huge ureteric stone obstructing the right ureterovesical junction in a 58 year-old male cadaver. We also found hydroureter distal to the impaction of the calculus, renal damage and severe hydronephrosis on the right side. Histopathological analysis showed conditions of arterio-nephro-sclerosis and eroded ureter secondary to the calculus. Ureteric stones obstruction may result in hydroureter, hydronephrosis and progressive renal damage leading to irreversible renal function. The present case provides valuable information regarding the gross and histopathological alterations in ureteric calculi. CONCLUSION: It further enables clinicians to be armed with the knowledge of preventive approaches to educate patients with previous calculi, or those who may develop in the future.

The superficial middle cerebral vein (SMCV) drains the venous blood from most of the superolateral surface of the brain and drains typically into the cavernous sinus as mentioned in standard textbooks. But the drainage of the SMCV is variable as indicated by various radiological studies. Although variations in the drainage of the SMCV exist, there is a shortage in the literature providing cadaveric evidence for the same. The present study was designed to identify the variations in the drainage pattern of the SMCV in fetal cadavers. During the dissection of formalin-fixed full-term fetuses, deviation in the drainage of the SMCV was observed in five out of 30 cases. In three out of 30 specimens (10%), SMCV was observed draining into superior petrosal sinus; and in two specimens (6.6%) into the transverse sinus. In the remaining specimens, the SMCV drained directly into the cavernous sinus. Knowledge of the variations noted in the present study is essential, not only for diagnosing several diseases involving the cavernous sinus or paracavernous sinuses but also in surgeries of paracavernous sinus lesions and endovascular treatment of arteriovenous fistulas. The SMCV and superior petrosal sinus can be a venous refluxing route in patients with arteriovenous fistulas.

Catechin is an active ingredient of green tea. It is reported to inhibit corticosteroid-induced anxiety and depression-like symptoms. Considering the complex nature of depression, effects of catechin need to be studied in a clinically relevant depression model. The present study was designed to explore the antidepressant effect of catechin in Sprague Dawley rats subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Animals were subjected to CUMS and treated with (+)-catechin (50 mg/kg) or escitalopram (10 mg/kg) orally; a CUMS control and a vehicle control that was not exposed to CUMS were also established. Various stressors were applied daily in an unpredictable manner for 8 weeks achieve CUMS. Sucrose preference test were performed after 4 and 8 weeks and forced swim tests (FSTs) were conducted at weeks 4, 6 and 8. At the end of week 8, animals were sacrificed and the brain homogenate was studied for antioxidant parameters. Compared with the vehicle control, animals of the CUMS control group showed a significant decrease in sucrose intake. Catechin and escitalopram treatment significantly improved the sucrose intake compared with the CUMS control. A similar trend was observed in the FSTs, where catechin and escitalopram treatment significantly reduced the immobility time, and antioxidant parameters, including catalase, glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels were recovered in treated animals compared with the CUMS control. Thus, it was concluded that catechin reverses CUMS-induced depression in rats by ameliorating oxidative stress, which may help to develop a novel treatment for major depressive disorder.

Generally among the branches of common peroneal nerve, the superficial peroneal nerve provides cutaneous innervation to major part of the dorsum of the foot whereas the deep peroneal nerve innervates the skin over the first interdigital cleft region. The sural and saphenous nerves supplies the smaller lateral and medial margins of the dorsum respectively. The present study has been taken to classify the patterns of innervations of the nerves on the dorsum of the foot in South Indian population. A total of 40 formalin fixed lower limbs from 20 adult cadavers (15 males, 5 females) aged between 35 to 60 years were dissected and the branching patterns of nerves on the dorsum of the foot were noted and specimens were photographed. Gross anatomical variations were noted in the branching pattern of superficial peroneal, deep peroneal and sural nerve on the dorsum of foot. Results obtained in our study were classified into four groups. The cutaneous nerves are at risk of iatrogenic injuries during surgeries involving ankle, open reduction and internal fixation of fracture, arthroscopy etc. Knowledge of such anatomical variations of the nerves provides information to clinicians to avoid injury to them in real clinical situations.

The infratemporal fossa is a compact space with multiple contents. Explicit anatomical knowledge regarding the relationship between these neurovascular structures becomes imperative during any surgical intervention. Literature is abounding with variations in this region. It encompasses communication between branches of the mandibular nerve or entrapment of nerves by bony bridges, or even abnormal course and branching pattern of the arteries. However, there are many other variabilities in these structures that are less reported or unreported. The present study is an effort to report the characteristic variations of the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves and their anomalous relationship with the maxillary artery in the infratemporal fossa. The study was conducted bilaterally on 26 adult cadavers. The variations in the origin and course of the lingual & inferior alveolar nerves were noted. The course of the maxillary artery and its relation to the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves was also recorded. The variations were explained under the following types: a) communication between the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves, b) existence of a pterygospinous ligament/bar overlying/separating the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves, c) abnormal course/ absence of the chorda tympani nerve and an alternate taste pathway, d) multiple roots of the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves and e) the unusual course of the maxillary artery. Knowledge of these variations would aid the head & neck surgeons in minimizing the compression symptoms and also avoiding postoperative complications

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tamarindus indica is an ingredient in the traditional aphrodisiac formulations in Africa and India. It is also a widely used food ingredient in other tropical countries. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study was aimed to evaluate the aphrodisiac potential and reproductive safety profile of aqueous extract of Tamarindus indica in male Wistar rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aqueous extract was prepared by maceration of pulp followed by reduction of volume in rotavapor under heat followed by freeze drying. The prepared extract was characterized for contents of total phenol, flavonoid, and saponin. It was also subjected to phytoconstituent analysis using GCMS. Further, the extract was evaluated for acute toxicity study. The aphrodisiac and reproductive toxicity potential were evaluated in animals after grouping them in four with six animals each namely, normal control, standard (Sildenafil citrate, 4mg/kg p.o.) and extract of Tamarindus indica treated groups at two dose levels, 125 and 250mg/kg p.o. The study was conducted for 54 days with daily once dosing of extract and standard. Equal number of females was grouped without treatment for evaluation of parameters of sexual desire (mount frequency and intromission frequency) and parameters of sexual arousal (mount latency and intromission latency). These parameters were evaluated on day 14, 28, 42 and 54. Animals were sacrificed on day 54, testes were removed and studied for histopathological changes. RESULTS: The extract showed 6.6mg gallic acid equivalent/g of total phenol, 2.3mg catechin equivalent/g of flavonoid and 11.6% saponin. Forty chemical constituents were identified by GCMS analysis. In acute toxicity study, the extract was found to be safe till 2000mg/kg p.o. Efficacy study showed significant (p<0.05) improvement in parameters of sexual desire (mount frequency and intromission frequency) and parameters of sexual arousal on all observed days except mount frequency for 125mg/kg on 42nd day and intromission frequency for both doses of tamarind compared to normal control. Improvements in these parameters were comparable to the standard drug. Histopathology study and sperm count suggested an increase in sperm production without any sign of toxicity in testis. Sperm motility significantly (p<0.05) increased in the treatment groups that received extract at 250mg/kg compared to normal control. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The dorsal interossei are the abductors of the fingers and the knowledge of its variation help the surgeon in treatment of fractures, claw hand and compartment syndromes. AIM: To note the origin, insertion, pattern of muscle fibres and tendon length of all the dorsal interossei of hand. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Routinely dissected 30 formalin fixed hand in the Department of Anatomy, KMC, Manipal, were observed for origin, insertion and tendon length and muscle pattern of dorsal interossei. RESULTS: Out of 30 hands, presence of supernumerary muscle was observed in three hands. Presence of three heads of dorsal interossei was noted in one hand. CONCLUSION: The finding of present study is of importance to surgeons and orthopaedicians during conservative and surgical management of hand deformity. Adequate knowledge of these muscular variations is also important in treatment of fractures, stiff hand, claw hand or tendon transfer.

RESUMEN

Here we present a unique case of variation in the branching pattern of the coeliac trunk. In the present case, the coeliac trunk was replaced by two separate arterial trunks. The first arterial trunk bifurcated into the left gastric and the left hepatic arteries. The second arterial trunk bifurcated into a splenic artery and a hepato-gastroduodenal trunk. The hepato-gastroduodenal trunk presented an unusual course and termination. The right hepatic artery arising from the hepato-gastroduodenal trunk also showed a variant course. Such rare variations are important for gastroenterological surgeons and interventional radiologists due to increase in number of transplantation surgeries and live donor liver transplantations.
