RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between kinesin-like family 6 (KIF6) polymorphisms and hypertension in a northeast Chinese cohort. In this study, two single nucleotide polymorphisms of KIF6 (rs20456 and rs6930913) and their haplotype were analyzed in 382 hypertension patients and 378 controls with SHEsis analysis platform, and the gene-environmental interactions were evaluated with logistic regression analysis. After adjusting for confounding factors, significantly lower risk of hypertension was observed in participants with genotype TC (0.416 (CI 0.299-0.578), p < 0.001) and CC (0.577 (0.389-0.857), p=0.007) of rs20456 compared with TT. For rs6930913, allele T (0.522 (0.386-0.704), p < 0.001), genotype TT (0.325 (0.205-0.515), p < 0.001), and genotype CT (0.513 (0.379-0.693), p < 0.001) were significantly associated with lower risk of hypertension than allele C and CC genotype, respectively. Gene-environment analyses confirmed the significant influence on hypertension by the interactions between genotypes distribution in rs20456 (CT: p=0.036, TT: p=0.022) and smoking status. No interactions were found between smoking and rs6930913, except those with dominant or recessive genetic models (both P s =0.006). There were no interactions between KIF6 and overweight (all P s > 0.05). Haplotype analyses showed that CC (p=0.005) and TC (p=0.001) of rs20456 and rs6930913 were significantly associated with a statistically increased risk of hypertension. The false-positive report probability (FPRP) analysis was used to verify significant findings. In conclusions, KIF6 might affect the susceptibility of hypertension. The allele C (rs20456) and allele T (rs690913) were inclined to protect individuals from hypertension both in genotype and haplotype analyses.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension and obesity are recognized as modifiable risk factors for stroke, but their combined effects are unknown. This study aimed to explore the combined effects of hypertension and general or central obesity on the risk of ischemic stroke in a middle-aged and elderly population. METHODS: The data of 11,731 participants (53.5 ± 10.5 years old) were analyzed from the Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study, 2012-2013. General obesity (GO) was defined by body mass index (BMI); central obesity (CO) was measured by waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHpR). RESULTS: The overall prevalence of ischemic stroke was 3.1%. After adjusting for age and sex, the odds ratios for having ischemic stroke were 4.31 (3.14-5.91) among subjects with hypertension, 1.79 (1.40-2.30) with GO, 1.94 (1.54-2.43), 1.98 (1.54-2.53), and 1.65 (1.33-2.06) with CO measured by WC, WHtR and WHpR, respectively. After full adjustment for potential confounders, the combinations of hypertension and obesity indices (including BMI, WC, WHtR and WHpR) were associated with the highest risk of ischemic stroke, especially in women, which were respectively 7.3-fold, 9.3-fold, 9.9-fold and 7.6-fold higher than that of individuals without both conditions. CONCLUSION: Our study results suggest that women with both hypertension and obesity, no matter defined by BMI, WC, WHtR or WHpR, were more likely to have ischemic stroke. A better understanding of the combined effects of these risk factors can help promote primary prevention in susceptible subgroups.

PURPOSE: Some studies have established an association between hypertension or obesity and the risk of diabetes. This study aimed to examine the interaction of hypertension and obesity on diabetes. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The data of 11,731 Chinese men and women were analyzed from the 2012-2013 Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study. The interaction was examined by both additive and multiplicative scales. General obesity was measured by body mass index (BMI); central obesity was defined by waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHpR). RESULTS: After controlling for potential confounders, the odds ratios for diabetes were 3.864 (3.205-4.660), 4.500 (3.673-5.514), 4.932 (3.888-6.255) and 4.701 (3.817-5.788) for the combinations of hypertension and BMI, WC, WHtR or WHpR, respectively, which had the highest risk of diabetes among the four combinations. Notwithstanding the multiplicative interactions showed statistically significant in all analyses, the results of additive interactions were not consistent, suggesting the diabetes risk from female BMI (relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI): 1.136, 95% CI: 0.127-2.146, attributable proportion due to interaction (AP): 0.267, 95% CI: 0.057-0.477, synergy index (S):1.536, 95% CI: 1.017-2.321) or female WHpR (RERI: 1.076, 95% CI: 0.150-2.002, AP:0.205, 95% CI: 0.037-0.374, S:1.340, 95% CI: 1.012-1.775) was additive to the risk from hypertension. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that high BMI and high WHpR have synergistic interactions with hypertension on the risk of diabetes for females. The results of this study also suggest that BMI and WHpR, rather than WC, should be used for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in Chinese population.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperuricemia is a common metabolic disease that is intimately correlated with inflammation. Our study aimed to investigate the value of systemic inflammation response index as a novel inflammatory marker to estimate hyperuricemia in the rural Chinese population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the data of 8,095 Chinese men and women aged ≥35 years from the 2012-2013 Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of hyperuricemia was 12.84%. After fully adjusting for potential confounders, each SD increase of SIRI in men and women caused a 21.4% and 37.0% additional risk, respectively, for hyperuricemia. Moreover, smooth curve fitting and subgroup analyses corroborated the linearity and robustness of this correlation. ROC analysis showed the ability of SIRI to estimate hyperuricemia was significantly improved in females (0.741 vs 0.745, P = 0.043), but not in males (0.710 vs 0.714, P = 0.105). The net reclassification improvement (NRI, 0.120 in men vs 0.166 in women) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI, 0.002 in men vs 0.006 in women) showed a significant improvement for both genders. CONCLUSIONS: Our present study suggests a linear and robust relationship between SIRI and prevalent hyperuricemia, which implicates the value of SIRI to optimize the risk stratification and prevention of hyperuricemia.

BACKGROUND: Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a novel inflammatory marker that has been used to predict various inflammation-related diseases. This study aims to explore the association between MHR and prevalent hyperuricemia in a rural Chinese population. METHODS: 8163 eligible participants (mean age: 54.13 years, males: 45.71%) from northeast China were enrolled in this cross-sectional study between 2012 to 2013. MHR was determined as blood monocyte count ratio to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. RESULTS: The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 12.86%. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, per SD increase of MHR caused a 25.2% additional risk for hyperuricemia, and the top quartile of MHR had an 82.9% increased risk for hyperuricemia compared with the bottom quartile. Additionally, smooth curve fitting and subgroup analyses showed a linear and robust association between MHR and prevalent hyperuricemia respectively. Finally, after introducing MHR into the established model of risk factors, the AUC displayed a significant improvement (0.718 vs 0.724, p = 0.008). Furthermore, Category-free net reclassification improvement (0.160, 95% CI: 0.096-0.224, P < 0.001) and integrated discrimination improvement (0.003, 95% CI: 0.002-0.005, P < 0.001) also demonstrated significant improvements. CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggests that MHR was positively and independently correlated with prevalent hyperuricemia among rural Chinese adults. Our results also implicate an important value for MHR in optimizing the risk stratification of hyperuricemia.

Objective: To characterize the influence of relative wall thickness (RWT) on Cornell, Sokolow-Lyon and Peguero-Lo Presti voltages and elucidate its potential impacts on their diagnostic accuracy for LVH in a large general Chinese population.Methods: A total of 10,614 permanent residents aged ≥ 35 years were recruited for this study. All the participants were subjected to ECG and echocardiogram during the same visit. Multivariate linear and logistic regression analyzes were conducted to assess the influence of RWT on the voltages and their diagnostic performance for LVH detection.Results: A distinct correlation was identified between RWT and Cornell and Peguero-Lo Presti voltages following adjustments for age, gender and left ventricular mass (LVM) (ß = 0.675 and 1.342, respectively; Ps < 0.001). Besides, subjects with RWT > 0.42 exhibited higher rates of LVH diagnosed by Cornell (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.45-2.20), Sokolow-Lyon (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.08-1.56), and Peguero-Lo Presti voltage (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.29-1.70) after adjustments for age, gender and echocardiographic LVH. Furthermore, concentric remodeling or concentric hypertrophy displayed higher rates of LVH diagnoses via Cornell and Peguero-Lo Presti voltage criteria, as compared with normal geometry or eccentric hypertrophy, respectively (all Ps < 0.05), findings of which were independent of age, gender and LVMI.Conclusion: Echocardiographic RWT was independently correlated with electrocardiographic voltage measures of LVH, which influenced their positive rates and contributed to poor diagnostic performance.

The 2017 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) hypertension guideline updated stage 1 hypertension defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 130-139 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 80-89 mm Hg. However, the impact of 1 hypertension that affects future cardiovascular risk remains unclear among older adults in rural China. The prospective cohort study included 7503 adults aged ≥60 years with complete data and no cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline. Follow-up for the new adverse events was conducted from the end of the baseline survey to the end of the third follow-up survey (2007.01-2017.12). Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for blood pressure (BP) classifications and adverse events with normal BP as reference (< 120/80 mm Hg). During the 57 290 person-years follow-up period, 2261 all-cause mortality, 1271 CVD mortality, 1159 stroke, and 347 myocardial infarctions (MI) occurred. Patients with stage 1 hypertension versus normal BP had HRs (95% CI) of 1.068 (0.904-1.261) for all-cause mortality, 1.304 (1.015-1.675) for CVD mortality, 1.449 (1.107-1.899) for stroke, and 1.735 (1.051-2.863) for MI, respectively. In conclusion, among adults aged ≥60 years, stage 1 hypertension revealed an increased hazard of CVD mortality, stroke, and MI, which is complementary evidence for the application of 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guidelines in an older Chinese population. Therefore, BP control in patients with stage 1 hypertension may be beneficial to reduce the hazard of CVD in elderly Chinese individuals.

AIMS: We performed the current study primarily to characterize the independent association of blood pressure with heart rate-corrected QT (QTc) interval after adjusting for cardiovascular confounding factors and left ventricular mass (LVM) in a large general population in China. METHODS: All enrolled 10,553 permanent residents with age ≥ 35 years from Liaoning Province were investigated by a questionnaire and then subjected to physical examinations, laboratory analyses, and electrocardiogram (ECG) as well as echocardiogram at the same visit. Multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the independent association of blood pressure with QTc interval. RESULTS: Hypertensive subjects had significantly longer QTc interval and higher prevalence of prolonged QTc interval compared with normotensive ones in all subgroups stratified by gender and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (all Ps ≤ 0.001). Multiple relevant clinical confounding factors and LVM were all adjusted in the multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses. As a result, both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were independently associated with QTc interval (ß = 0.12 and 0.16, respectively; Ps < 0.001). Furthermore, as categorical variables, hypertension was independently associated with prolonged QTc interval (OR = 1.71; P < 0.001). Sex-specific analyses revealed that the independent associations were detected in both males and females (all Ps < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: These key findings of the current study highlighted the fact that hypertension was significantly associated with prolonged QTc interval and the correlations were independent of confounding factors and LVM.

Aim: To investigate whether monocyte to HDL cholesterol ratio (MHR) can improve the risk stratification of reduced renal function by estimating atherosclerosis. Patients & methods: The cross-sectional study included 8159 subjects (males: 45.73%, mean age: 54.12 years) from Northeast China in 2013. Results: Each standard deviation increase of MHR brought 42.9% additional risk of reduced renal function in males. In females, MHR strongly correlated with reduced renal function before it reached a breakpoint (MHR = 0.25). Additionally, net reclassification improvement identified the value of MHR (0.199; 95% CI: 0.030-0.369; p = 0.021) to improve the risk classification of renal function reduction. Conclusion: This study implicates that MHR is independently associated with reduced renal function and can refine the risk stratification of renal function reduction.

BACKGROUND: Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a recently emerged measure of inflammation and oxidative stress and has been used to predict multiple cardiovascular abnormalities, but data relative to ischemic stroke are lacking. The goal of this study was to estimate the associations of MHR and prevalent ischemic stroke among a large cohort of general Chinese population. METHOD: The study analyzed 8148 individuals (mean age: 54.1 years; 45.7% males) enrolled in a cross-sectional population-based Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study (NCRCHS). We identified 194 patients admitted from January and August 2013 with ischemic stroke. RESULTS: After adjustment for age, sex, and potential confounders, each standard deviation (SD) increment of MHR was predictive to a greater odd of ischemic stroke (odds ratio, 1.276; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.082-1.504), with subjects in the highest quartile of MHR levels having a 1.6-fold higher risk of prevalent ischemic stroke (95% CI, 1.045-2.524) as compared with those in the lowest quartile. Moreover, smoothing curve showed a linear positive pattern of this association. The area under the curve (AUC) significantly increased (P = 0.042) to 0.808 (95% CI, 0.779-0.837) when the combined MHR was added to the baseline logistic regression model with ischemic stroke risk factors. Also, MHR (0.004) significantly improved integrated discrimination improvement when added to the baseline model. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated for the first time a linear relation between MHR levels and the odds of ischemic stroke in a large community-based population. The MHR, a marker of high atherosclerotic burden, demonstrated incremental predictive value over traditional clinical risk factors, thus providing clinical utility in risk stratification in subjects presenting with ischemic stroke. These findings had implications for strategies aimed at lowering MHR to prevent adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes.

BACKGROUND: To explore the potential correlation between 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk and depressive symptoms in a general population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 11,956 permanent residents of Liaoning Province in China ≥35 years of age was conducted. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) while 10-year ASCVD risk was calculated using the tool suitable for China. RESULTS: Males had significantly higher 10-year ASCVD risk than females (14.2 ± 10.7% vs. 9.3 ± 9.1%; P <  0.001) but lower PHQ-9 score (2.34 ± 3.13 vs. 3.63 ± 4.02; P <  0.001). The mean PHQ-9 score increased significantly with advancing 10-year ASCVD risk category in both males (from 2.03 to 2.61; P for trend < 0.001) and females (from 3.04 to 4.61; P for trend < 0.001), and the increasing trend was more apparent in females (P <  0.001). Pearson correlation analyses showed that 10-year ASCVD risk positively correlated with PHQ-9 score in both sexes (Ps <  0.001). In multivariate linear regression analyses adjusting for confounding risk factors, the independent associations of 10-year ASCVD risk with PHQ-9 score were all significant in the total (ß = 2.61; P <  0.001), male (ß = 1.64; P = 0.001), and female subjects (ß = 3.71; P <  0.001). Further, the interaction analysis proved the impacts of 10-year ASCVD risk on PHQ-9 score were more apparent in females than males (Ps < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The 10-year ASCVD risk was positively associated with depressive symptoms in both males and females, which was more apparent in the latter. These findings provided some novel data about the value of 10-year ASCVD risk in estimating depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that cardiometabolic index (CMI), a novel estimate of visceral adipose tissue, could be of use in the evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors. However, the potential utility and clinical significance of CMI in the detection of reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of CMI in assessing reduced eGFR in the general Chinese population. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included 11,578 participants (mean age: 53.8 years, 53.7% females) from Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study (NCRCHS) of general Chinese population (data collected from January 2013 to August 2013). CMI was calculated by triglyceride to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio multiply waist-to-height ratio. Reduced eGFR was defined as eGFR< 60 ml/min per 1.73m2. Multivariate regressions were performed to determine CMI's association with eGFR value and eGFR reduction, ROC analyses were employed to investigate CMI's discriminating ability for decreased eGFR. RESULTS: The prevalence of reduced eGFR was 1.7% in males and 2.5% in females. CMI was notably more adverse in reduced eGFR groups, regardless of genders. In fully adjusted multivariate linear models, each 1 SD increment of CMI caused 3.150 ml/min per 1.73m2 and 2.411 ml/min per 1.73m2 loss of eGFR before CMI reached 1.210 and 1.520 in males and females, respectively. In logistic regression analyses, per 1 SD increase of CMI brought 51.6% additional risk of reduced eGFR in males while caused 1.347 times of risk in females. After divided into quartiles, people in the top quartile of CMI had higher adjusted ORs of having reduced eGFR, with ORs of 4.227 (1.681, 10.627) and 3.442 (1.685-7.031) for males and females respectively. AUC of CMI was revealed to be 0.633 (0.620-0.646) in males and 0.684 (0.672-0.695) in females. CONCLUSIONS: Higher CMI was independently associated with greater burden of reduced eGFR, highlighting VAT distribution and dysfunction as a potential mechanism underlying the association of obesity with kidney damage and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The findings from this study provided important insights regarding the potential usefulness and clinical relevance of CMI in the detection of reduced eGFR among general Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic index (CMI) defines adiposity based on triglycerides (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). This newly proposed metric has been used to detect multiple cardiovascular risk factors, but data relative to diabetes in the general population are lacking. This study aims to validate CMI's utility of discriminating diabetes and compares it with other indexes among general Chinese population. METHODS: Analyses were based on a cross-sectional study of 11,478 participants that underwent assessment of metabolic and anthropometric parameters in rural areas of northeastern China in 2013. CMI was calculated by TG/HDL-C × WHtR. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed to clarify CMI's association with diabetes, ROC analyses were engaged to investigate CMI's discriminating ability for diabetes. RESULTS: The prevalence of diabetes was 9.93% in males while 10.76% in females, and increased with CMI's increment. After full adjustment, each SD increment of CMI had odds ratios (ORs) for diabetes of 1.471 (1.367-1.584) and 1.422 (1.315-1.539) in females and males, respectively. Compared with bottom categories of CMI, the top quartiles had ORs of 3.736 (2.783-5.015) in females and 3.697 (2.757-4.958) in males. The ROC results showed an excellent discriminating power of CMI (AUC: 0.702 for females, 0.664 for males). CONCLUSIONS: An increasing CMI was correlated with higher odds of diabetes, supporting CMI as a useful and economic measure to screen and quantify diabetes in general Chinese population. Monitoring and promoting achievement of dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity based on CMI may improve subclinical and cardiovascular outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the novel Peguero-Lo Presti electrocardiographic criteria to diagnose left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) were developed from Caucasian American population with a relatively high sensitivity. However, further validation on a large Asian population has never been conducted. Thus, this study was to test and validate the overall performance of this index in a general population from China. METHODS: A total of 10,614 permanent residents ≥35 years of age were included in this study. All participants completed 12-lead electrocardiography and echocardiography at the same visit. A receiver-operating characteristic curve was used for comparing the performance of electrocardiographic indices in diagnosing echocardiographic LVH. RESULTS: The Peguero-Lo Presti criteria had higher sensitivity but lower specificity than Cornell and Sokolow-Lyon voltage according to the recommended criteria. The area under the curve of this novel Peguero-Lo Presti voltage was lower than that of Cornell for predicting LVH defined by both left ventricular mass/body surface area (0.665 vs 0.699 in males; 0.689 vs 0.721 in females) and left ventricular mass/height2.7 (0.623 vs 0.681 in males; 0.642 vs 0.709 in females) (all Ps < 0.05). By changing cutoff values, Cornell voltage outperformed Peguero-Lo Presti whether to achieve a relatively high sensitivity or specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The novel Peguero-Lo Presti voltage may not be a better screening tool for LVH in Asian population. In comparison with this new index, Cornell voltage could be a better screening test for LVH by changing its cutoff values to obtain maximum sensitivity.

Corins are membrane-bound protease that regulates blood pressure by activating the natriuretic peptides. These pro-atrial natriuretic peptide convertases are essential for sodium homeostasis and normal blood pressure. CORIN variants have been identified in humans and other animals, but no studies of CORIN polymorphisms have been conducted in northeastern China. This study aims to investigate the association of 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CORIN (rs2271037 and rs3749585) with hypertension, as well as their potential interactions with some risk factors of hypertension in a Han population of northeastern China. A case-control study, including 402 patients with hypertension and 406 participants with normal blood pressure, was conducted in Liaoning province. SNP genotyping was carried out by high resolution melting (HRM) after polymerase chain reaction amplifications. Since rs3749585 is located in 3' untranslated region (UTR) of CORIN, in silico analysis was used to predict target micro RNAs on TargetScan, miRanda, and DIANA-microT. As a result, mutant T allele in rs2271037 (odds ratio [OR], 1.693; 95% confidence [CI], 1.528-1.877; p < 0.001) and C allele in rs3749585 (OR, 1.114; 95% CI 1.011-1.227; p = 0.029) increased the risk of hypertension, comparing with wild G allele and T allele, respectively. Patients with genotype TT (OR, 10.209; 95% CI, 6.414-16.250; p < 0.001) and GT (OR, 1.730; 95% CI, 1.226-2.443; p = 0.002) have higher risk of hypertension than those with genotype GG. SNP rs2271037 was significantly associated with susceptibility to hypertension in all genetic models (dominant model: OR, 2.879; 95% CI, 2.080-3.986; p < 0.001; recessive model: OR, 7.159; 95% CI, 4.779-10.724; p < 0.001; additive model: OR, 1.535; 95% CI, 1.163-2.027; p = 0.002). SNP rs3749585 was significantly correlated with hypertension susceptibility only in dominant model (OR, 1.533; 95% CI, 1.073-2.189; p = 0.019), but not in recessive model (OR, 1.220; 95% CI, 0.906-1.644; p = 0.191) or additive model (OR, 0.915; 95% CI, 0.694-1.205; p = 0.527). After adjusting for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and serum sodium level in logistic models, the same statistical results were obtained. Interaction study showed the association between CORIN polymorphisms and hypertension could be changed by overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2). In silico analyses implicated hsa-miR-495 as a target miRNA that potentially interacts with the 3' UTR of CORIN. In conclusion, polymorphisms of rs2271037 and rs3749585 in CORIN were significantly associated with hypertension in a Han population of northeastern China. The mutant-type T allele of rs2271037 and C allele of rs3749585 might increase the susceptibility to hypertension in this population.

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing the clinical efficacy and safety of intensive statin therapy with ezetimibe-statin combination therapy are still rare at present, especially in Asian population. METHODS: We enrolled 202 patients who suffered acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between May and July in 2016. Patients were allocated into three groups based on the lipid lowering strategy: moderate-intensity statin group (n=118), ezetimibe combined with moderate-intensity statin group (ezetimibe-statin combination, n=55) and intensive statin group (n=29). The lipid profiles and side effects were analyzed and compared among the patients in three groups at admission, 1 month and 3 months after PCI. The clinical outcomes of the patients were observed through 6-month follow-up. RESULTS: One month after PCI, the level of non-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (non-HDL-C) was decreased by 41.9%, 21.6% and 29.8% by ezetimibe-statin combination therapy, moderate-intensity statin therapy and intensive statin therapy, respectively (P<0.05). The reduction percentages of TC and LDL-C were significantly higher in ezetimibe-statin combination group than in moderate-intensity statin group (P<0.001). The proportion of patients reaching LDL-C goal was higher in ezetimibe-statin combination group (69.1%, P=0.007) and intensive statin group (67.9%, P=0.047) compared with moderate-intensity statin group (46.9%) at 1 month after PCI. There was no significant difference among the three groups with respect to hepatic enzymes level, creatine kinase (CK) level and incidence of muscle symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The reduction percentage of non-HDL-C was larger in ezetimibe-statin combination group than intensive statin group. This finding suggested that statin/ezetimibe combination therapy could be an alternative to intensive statin therapy in Chinese patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

This study aimed to explore the underlying marker genes associated with hypertension by bioinformatics analyses. A gene expression profile (GSE54015) was downloaded. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the normotensive female (NF) and hypertensive female (HF), and between the normotensive male (NM) and hypertensive male (HM) groups were analyzed. Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway enrichment analyses were performed, followed by protein-protein interaction (PPI) network construction. The transcription factors (TFs), and the common DEGs between the HF and HM groups were then analyzed. In total, 411 DEGs were identified between the HF and NF groups, and 418 DEGs were identified between the HM and NM groups. The upregulated DEGs in the HF and HM groups were enriched in 9 GO terms, including oxidation reduction, such as cytochrome P450, family 4, subfamily b, polypeptide 1 (Cyp4b1) and cytochrome P450, family 4, subfamily a, polypeptide 31 Cyp4a31). The downregulated DEGs were mainly enriched in GO terms related to hormone metabolic processes. In the PPI network, cytochrome P450, family 2, subfamily e, polypeptide 1 (Cyp2e1) had the highest degree in all 3 analysis methods in the HF group. Additionally, 4 TFs were indentified from the 2 groups of data, including sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 (Srebf1), estrogen receptor 1 (Esr1), retinoid X receptor gamma (Rxrg) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (Pparg). The intersection genes were mainly enriched in GO terms related to the extracellular region. On the whole, our data indicate that the DEGs, Cyp4b1, Cyp4a31 and Loxl2, and the TFs, Esr1, Pparg and Rxrg, are associated with the progression of hypertension, and may thus serve as potential therapeutic targets in this disease.
