RESUMEN

Amaranth is a nutritionally valuable crop, as it contains phenolic acids and flavonoids, yielding diverse plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) like phytosterol, tocopherols, and carotenoids. This study explored the variations in the contents of seventeen polyphenolic compounds within the leaves of one hundred twenty Amaranthus accessions representing nine Amaranthus species. The investigation entailed the analysis of phenolic content across nine Amaranthus species, specifically A. hypochondriacus, A. cruentus, A. caudatus, A. tricolor, A. dubius, A. blitum, A. crispus, A. hybridus, and A. viridis, utilizing ultra performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (UPLC-PDA). The results revealed significant differences in polyphenolic compounds among accessions in which rutin content was predominant in all Amaranthus species in both 2018 and 2019. Among the nine Amaranthus species, the rutin content ranged from 95.72 ± 199.17 µg g-1 (A. dubius) to 1485.09 ± 679.51 µg g-1 (A. viridis) in 2018 and from 821.59 ± 709.95 µg g-1 (A. tricolor) to 3166.52 ± 1317.38 µg g-1 (A. hypochondriacus) in 2019. Correlation analysis revealed, significant positive correlations between rutin and kaempferol-3-O-ß-rutinoside (r = 0.93), benzoic acid and ferulic acid (r = 0.76), and benzoic acid and kaempferol-3-O-ß-rutinoside (r = 0.76), whereas gallic acid showed consistently negative correlations with each of the 16 phenolic compounds. Wide variations were identified among accessions and between plants grown in the two years. The nine species and one hundred twenty Amaranthus accessions were clustered into six groups based on their seventeen phenolic compounds in each year. These findings contribute to expanding our understanding of the phytochemical traits of accessions within nine Amaranthus species, which serve as valuable resources for Amaranthus component breeding and functional material development.

Without early detection and treatment, chronic and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). With this in mind, we exploit the recent concept of the liver-gut axis and analyze the serum profile of ALD patients for identification of microbiome-derived metabolites that can be used as diagnostic biomarkers for onset of ALD. 1H-NMR was used to analyze serum metabolites of 38 ALD patients that were grouped according to their Child-Turcotte-Pugh scores (CTP): class A (CTP-A; 19), class B(CTP-B; 10), and class C (CTP-C; 9). A partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and a variable importance of projection (VIP) score were used to identify significant metabolites. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and correlation heatmap were used to evaluate the predictability of identified metabolites as ALD biomarkers. Among 42 identified metabolites, 6 were significantly correlated to exacerbation of ALD. As ALD progressed in CTP-C, the levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), malate, tyrosine, and 2-hydroxyisovalerate increased, while isobutyrate and isocitrate decreased. Out of six metabolites, elevated levels of TMAO and its precursors (carnitine, betaine, choline) were associated with severity of ALD. This indicates that TMAO can be used as an effective biomarker for the diagnosis of ALD progression.

Cordyceps militaris, an entomopathogenic ascomycete, produces edible medicinal mushrooms known to have medicinal and therapeutic functions. To develop the genetic transformation system in C. militaris, green fluorescent protein (GFP) mutants of C. militaris were generated by PEG-mediated protoplast transformation. The CRISPR/Cas9 ribonucleoprotein (RNP) targeting the class III histidine kinase of C. militaris (CmHk1) was then delivered into protoplasts of C. militaris through the transformation system. Mutations induced by the RNP in selected mutants were detected: 1 nt deletion (6 mutants), 3 nt deletion with substitution of 1 nt (1 mutant), insertion of 85 nts (1 mutant), 41 nts (2 mutants), and 35 nts (5 mutants). An in vitro sensitivity assay of the mutants indicated that knockout of CmHk1 reduced sensitivity to two fungicides, iprodione and fludioxonil, but increased sensitivity to osmotic stresses compared to the wild type. Summing up, the CRISPR/Cas9 RNP delivery system was successfully developed, and our results revealed that CmHk1 was involved in the fungicide resistance and osmotic stress in C. militaris.

Agaricus bisporus is one of the world's most popular edible mushrooms, including in South Korea. We performed de novo genome assembly with a South Korean white-colored cultivar of A. bisporus, KMCC00540. After generating a scaffold-level genomic sequence, we inferred chromosome-level assembly by genomic synteny analysis with the representative A. bisporus strains H97 and H39. The KMCC00540 genome had 13 pseudochromosomes comprising 33,030,236 bp mostly covering both strains. A comparative genomic analysis with cultivar H97 indicated that most genomic regions and annotated proteins were shared (over 90%), ensuring that our cultivar could be used as a representative genome. However, A. bisporus suffers from browning even from only a slight mechanical stimulus during transportation, which significantly lowers its commercial value. To identify which genes respond to a mechanical stimulus that induces browning, we performed a time-course transcriptome analysis based on the de novo assembled genome. Mechanical stimulus induces up-regulation in long fatty acid ligase activity-related genes, as well as melanin biosynthesis genes, especially at early time points. In summary, we assembled the chromosome-level genomic information on a Korean strain of A. bisporus and identified which genes respond to a mechanical stimulus, which provided key hints for improving the post-harvest biological control of A. bisporus.

We used a Vitek 2 AST-YS08 (YS08) system and the broth microdilution method (BMD) adopted by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) to compare the susceptibility of 184 isolates of 11 Candida species to fluconazole, voriconazole, micafungin, caspofungin, amphotericin B, and flucytosine. In Candida albicans, the categorical agreement (CA) was 79.2%, 91.7%, 95.8%, and 95.8% for fluconazole, voriconazole, micafungin, and caspofungin, respectively. About 12.5% and 4.2% of very major errors were detected for fluconazole and voriconazole, respectively. C. glabrata showed excellent essential agreements (EAs) (>90%) for azoles but different MIC distributions for fluconazole and caspofungin. The CA between BMD fluconazole MICs and YS08 voriconazole MICs by the method-specific clinical breakpoint (CBP) was 90% in C. glabrata. Over 80% of C. glabrata and C. krusei isolates identified as micafungin-susceptible were labeled intermediate or resistant to caspofungin in YS08. In C. parapsilosis, 5.3% of very major errors and 10.5% of minor errors were found, whereas 33.3% of minor errors were observed in C. tropicalis for fluconazole. For C. tropicalis, 13 (61.9%) non-wild type (WT) isolates of fluconazole and 7 (33.3%) non-WTs of voriconazole were classified in YS08 as WT. For C. auris, the EAs were 93.3%, 100%, 82.2%, 97.8%, and 97.8% for fluconazole, voriconazole, micafungin, caspofungin, and amphotericin B, respectively. YS08 showed comparable results to the BMD. However, considering the lower YS08 fluconazole MIC results compared with BMD in Candida species and YS08 caspofungin results in C. glabrata and C. krusei, improvements are needed. IMPORTANCE The new Vitek 2 AST-YS08 (YS08) card has been updated to reflect the recently revised Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guideline. In this study, antifungal drug susceptibility tests were performed using the YS08 card and compared with the CLSI broth microdilution (BMD) method. In conclusion, YS08 showed similar results to BMD, including with C. auris. However, about 12.5% and 4.2% of major errors were detected for fluconazole and voriconazole, respectively, in C. albicans. More than 80% of C. glabrata and C. krusei isolates identified as susceptible to micafungin were labeled moderate or resistant to caspofungin in YS08. The categorical agreement between BMD fluconazole MICs and YS08 voriconazole MICs was 90% by the method-specific CBP of voriconazole, 80% by the current epidemiological cutoff value (ECV) (0.25 µg/mL) of voriconazole, and 85% by the previous ECV (0.5 µg/mL) of voriconazole. Further improvements in YS08 for the detection of fluconazole and echinocandin resistance are thus needed.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Recently, interest in the relationship between weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS) and chronic diseases is increasing. We aimed to study the correlation between sleep duration and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an emerging metabolic disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on sleep duration from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was recorded. The subjects were divided into three groups according to the duration of WCUS: Group 1, those who slept for less than 7 hours in a week; Group 2, those who slept for less than 7 hours on weekdays but more than 7 hours on weekends (those with WCUS pattern); and Group 3, those who slept for more than 7 hours in a week. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between sleep duration and NAFLD. RESULTS: A mean sleep time of 7 hours or more showed a significant negative relationship with NAFLD (odds ratio [OR]: 0.84, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.79-0.89 in all; OR 0.91, 95%CI 0.84-0.99 in males; OR 0.86, 95%CI 0.79-0.94 in females). Groups 2 and 3 showed significant negative relationships with NAFLD when Group 1 was used as a reference (Group 2; OR: 0.80, 95%CI: 0.70-0.92, Group 3; OR: 0.73, 95%CI: 0.66-0.82). WCUS showed similar correlations with NAFLD, regardless of sex. CONCLUSIONS: WCUS and sleep duration are significantly associated with NAFLD. A prospective cohort study is needed to prove the causal effects.

ABSTRACT: Although cadmium (Cd) is correlated with elevated levels of hepatic amino transferases, its influence on the degree of liver steatosis and fibrosis are unknown yet. We aimed to investigate the associations between the serum level of Cd and degree of liver steatosis/fibrosis.Clinical data were obtained from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys IV-VII. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevation was defined as ≥ 33 IU/L for men and ≥ 25 IU/L for women. Significant steatosis was defined as a hepatic steatosis index ≥ 36, while significant fibrosis was defined as a fibrosis index (FIB-4) ≥ 2.67 and as an aspartate aminotransferase and platelet ratio index ≥ 0.7. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated after adjustment.The levels of serum Cd were assessable in 15,783 subjects. The serum cadmium concentrations were significantly associated with ALT elevation, significant liver steatosis and fibrosis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated serum Cd level in the forth quartile had a positive correlation with ALT elevation, hepatic steatosis index ≥ 36, FIB-4 ≥ 2.67 and aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio ≥ 0.7 using the first quartile of serum Cd level as the reference, (adjusted odds ratios 1.90, 1.26, 1.73, and 2.53, respectively; P values <.001).The serum level of Cd was associated with liver steatosis and fibrosis. The evaluation of serum Cd may help for assessing an unexplained liver steatosis and fibrosis, and further prospective studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Two strains, YP344 and YP579 were isolated from soil samples in Pocheon City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The strains YP344 and YP579 belong to the genus Vishniacozyma and Dioszegia, respectively. The molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain YP344 was closely related to Vishniacozyma peneaus. Strain YP344T differed by four nucleotide substitutions with no gap (0.70%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 16 nucleotide substitutions with 8 gaps (5.76%) in the ITS region. On the other hand, the strain YP579T varied from the type strain of the most closely related species, Dioszegia zsoltii var. zsoltii, by 6 nucleotide substitutions with four gaps (1.64%) in the D1/D2 domain of LSU rRNA gene and 26 nucleotide substitutions with 14 gaps (8.16%) in the ITS region. Therefore, the name Vishniacozyma terrae sp. nov. and Dioszegia terrae sp. nov. are proposed, with type strains YP344T (KCTC27988T) and YP579T (KCTC 27998T), respectively.

Three strains, YP416T, YP421T, and Y422, were isolated from soil samples in Pocheon City, Gyeonggi province, South Korea. The strains belong to two novel yeast species in the genus Mrakia. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain YP416T was closely related to Mrakia niccombsii. Still, it differed by 9 nucleotide substitutions with no gap (1.51%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 14 nucleotide substitutions with 7 gaps (2.36%) in the ITS region. The strain YP421T differed from the type strain of the most closely related species, Mrakia aquatica, by 5 nucleotide substitutions with no gap (0.81%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 9 nucleotide substitutions with one gap (1.43%) in the ITS region. The names Mrakia terrae sp. nov. and Mrakia soli sp. nov. are proposed, with type strains YP416T (KCTC 27886T) and YP421T (KCTC 27890T), respectively. MycoBank numbers of the strains YP416T and YP421T are MB 836844 and MB 836847, respectively.

Theasinensin A (TSA) is a major group of catechin dimers mainly found in oolong tea and black tea. This compound is also manufactured with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as a substrate and is refined after the enzyme reaction. In previous studies, TSA has been reported to be effective against inflammation. However, the effect of these substances on skin melanin formation remains unknown. In this study, we unraveled the role of TSA in melanogenesis using mouse melanoma B16F10 cells and normal human epidermal melanocytes (NHEMs) through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blotting analysis, luciferase reporter assay, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis. TSA inhibited melanin formation and secretion in α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-induced B16F10 cells and NHEMs. TSA down-regulated the mRNA expression of tyrosinase (Tyr), tyrosinase-related protein 1 (Tyrp1), and Tyrp2, which are all related to melanin formation in these cells. TSA was able to suppress the activities of certain proteins in the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) signaling pathway associated with melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells: cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element-binding protein (CREB), protein kinase A (PKA), tyrosinase, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF). We also confirmed α-MSH-mediated CREB activities through a luciferase reporter assay, and that the quantities of cAMP were reduced by TSA in the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results. Based on these findings, TSA should be considered an effective inhibitor of hyperpigmentation.

Various fungi including Cordyceps farinosa, an entomopathogenic fungus, can produce steroidal triterpenoids. Protostadienol (protosta-17(20)Z,24-dien-3ß-ol) is a precursor of steroidal triterpenoid compounds. To identify oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC) gene candidates involved in triterpenoid biosynthesis, genome mining was performed using Illumina sequencing platform. In the sequence database, two OSC genes, CfaOSC1 and CfaOSC2, in the genome of C. farinosa were identified. Predicted amino-acid sequences of CfaOSC2 shared 66% similarities with protostadienol synthase (OSPC) of Aspergillus fumigatus. Phylogenetic analysis showed a clear grouping of CfaOSC2 in the OSPC clade. Function of CfaOSC2 was examined using a yeast INVSc1 heterologous expression system to endogenously synthesize 2,3-oxidosqualene. GC-MS analysis indicated that CfaOSC2 produced protosta-13(17),24-dien-3ß-ol and protostadienol at a 5:95 ratio. Our results demonstrate that CfaOSC2 is a multifunctional triterpene synthase yielding a predominant protostadienol together with a minor triterpenoid. These results will facilitate a greater understanding of biosynthetic mechanisms underlying steroidal triterpenoid biosynthesis in C. farinosa and other fungi.

CONTEXT: Among the plants in the genus Barringtonia (Lecythidaceae) used as traditional medicines to treat arthralgia, chest pain, and haemorrhoids in Indonesia, Barringtonia racemosa L. and Barringtonia acutangula (L.) Gaertn. have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in systemic inflammatory models. OBJECTIVE: The anti-inflammatory activity of Barringtonia angusta Kurz has not been investigated. We prepared a methanol extract of the leaves and stems of B. angusta (Ba-ME) and systemically evaluated its anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RAW264.7 cells stimulated with LPS or Pam3CSK4 for 24 h were treated with Ba-ME (12.5, 25, 50, 100, and 150 µg/mL), and NO production and mRNA levels of inflammatory genes were evaluated. Luciferase reporter gene assay, western blot analysis, overexpression experiments, and cellular thermal shift assay were conducted to explore the mechanism of Ba-ME. In addition, the anti-gastritis activity of Ba-ME (50 and 100 mg/kg, administered twice per day for two days) was evaluated using an HCl/EtOH-induced gastritis mouse model. RESULTS: Ba-ME dose-dependently suppressed NO production [IC50 = 123.33 µg/mL (LPS) and 46.89 µg/mL (Pam3CSK4)] without affecting cell viability. Transcriptional expression of iNOS, IL-1ß, COX-2, IL-6, and TNF-α and phosphorylation of Src, IκBα, p50/105, and p65 were inhibited by Ba-ME. The extract specifically targeted the Src protein by binding to its SH2 domain. Moreover, Ba-ME significantly ameliorated inflammatory lesions in the HCl/EtOH-induced gastritis model. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The anti-inflammatory activity of Ba-ME is mediated by targeting of the Src/NF-κB signalling pathway, and B. angusta has potential as an anti-inflammatory drug.

CONTEXT: Sauropus brevipes Müll. Arg. (Phyllanthaceae) has been used as an effective ingredient in a decoction for the treatment of diarrhoea. However, there was no report on its modulatory role in inflammation. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates anti-inflammatory effect of S. brevipes in various inflammation models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aerial part of S. brevipes was extracted with 95% ethanol to produce Sb-EE. RAW264.7 cells pre-treated with Sb-EE were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and Griess assay and PCR were performed. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, luciferase assay, Western blotting and kinase assay were employed. C57BL/6 mice (10 mice/group) were orally administered with Sb-EE (200 mg/kg) once a day for five days, and peritonitis was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of LPS (10 mg/kg). ICR mice (four mice/group) were orally administered with Sb-EE (20 or 200 mg/kg) or ranitidine (positive control) twice a day for two days, and EtOH/HCl was orally injected to induce gastritis. RESULTS: Sb-EE suppressed nitric oxide (NO) release (IC50=34 µg/mL) without cytotoxicity and contained flavonoids (quercetin, luteolin and kaempferol). Sb-EE (200 µg/mL) reduced the mRNA expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS). Sb-EE blocked the activities of Syk and Src, while inhibiting interleukin-1 receptor associated kinases (IRAK1) by 68%. Similarly, orally administered Sb-EE (200 mg/kg) suppressed NO production by 78% and phosphorylation of Src and Syk in peritonitis mice. Sb-EE also decreased inflammatory lesions in gastritis mice. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the inhibitory effect of Sb-EE on the inflammatory response, suggesting that Sb-EE can be developed as a potential anti-inflammatory agent.

With the increasing number of fungal infections and immunocompromised patients, rapid and accurate fungal identification is required in clinical microbiology laboratories. We evaluated the applicability of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) system, MicroIDSys Elite (ASTA Corp., South Korea) for the identification of medically important filamentous fungi. A total of 505 strains comprising 37 genera and 90 species collected from 11 Korean hospitals were sent to the microbiology laboratory of International St. Mary's Hospital. All isolates were tested using MicroIDSys Elite, and data were analyzed using the MoldDB v.1.22 database (ASTA). Correct identification rates were compared with the multigene sequencing results. MicroIDSys Elite correctly identified 86.5% (437/505) and 88.9% (449/505) of all tested isolates at the species and genus level, respectively. About 98.2% of Aspergillus isolates were identified at the species level, including cryptic and rare species of A. calidoustus, A. tamarii, A. lentulus, A. versicolor and A. aculeatus. MicroIDSys Elite identified 75.0% of basidiomycetes, including Schizophyllum commune, and 84.3% of the dermatophytes. It also distinguished Sprothrix globosa at the species level. The mean scores of total isolates corresponding to correct species identification were significantly higher than those obtained for genus-level identification (253.5 ± 50.7 vs. 168.6 ± 30.3, P < 0.001). MicroIDSys Elite showed high accuracy for the identification of filamentous fungi, including cryptic and rare Aspergillus species. It is suitable for use in clinical laboratories as a rapid and efficient tool for clinical mold identification. Further evaluations are recommended for MicroIDSys Elite as a rapid and efficient tool for the identification of medically important filamentous fungi.

Cordyceps militaris has been reported to the diverse pharmaceutical effects including cancer, inflammatory diseases, and bacteria or virus infection. However, the effect of C. militaris on exercise performance has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the beneficial effect of C. militaris on exercise performance. To evaluate exercise performance, we prepared C. militaris ethyl acetate extract (CMEE) and conducted grip strength tests every week after administration. Additionally, blood samples were collected at the end of the experiment for biochemical analysis. The administration of CMEE slightly increased grip strength, and this result was similar to the red ginseng treated group. According to the result of biochemical analysis, CMEE had an effect on the biomarkers related to ATP generation pathway but had little influence on the muscle fatigue related biomarkers. Therefore, C. militaris has the possibility of improving exercise performance, which could be associated with the increase in ATP production rather than the decrease in muscle fatigue during exercise.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling is an important therapeutic target to manage lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation. The transcription factor signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) has been identified as an important regulator of various immune-related diseases and has generated interest as a therapeutic target. Here, we investigated the time-dependent roles of STAT3 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. STAT3 inhibition induced expression of the pro-inflammatory genes iNOS and COX-2 at early time points. STAT3 depletion resulted in regulation of nuclear translocation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB subunits p50 and p65 and IκBα/Akt/PI3K signaling. Moreover, we found that one Src family kinase, Lyn kinase, was phosphorylated in STAT3 knockout macrophages. In addition to using pharmacological inhibition of NF-κB, we found out that STAT3KO activation of NF-κB subunit p50 and p65 and expression of iNOS was significantly inhibited; furthermore, Akt tyrosine kinase inhibitors also inhibited iNOS and COX-2 gene expression during early time points of LPS stimulation, demonstrating an NF-κB- Akt-dependent mechanism. On the other hand, iNOS expression was downregulated after prolonged treatment with LPS. Activation of NF-κB signaling was also suppressed, and consequently, nitric oxide (NO) production and cell invasion were repressed. Overall, our data indicate that STAT3 differentially regulates early- and late-phase TLR4-mediated inflammatory responses.

This study investigated the adjuvant effects for anticancer and antifatigue of the combination of Cordyceps militaris extract with sorafenib. The 5 extracts of C militaris were obtained through hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water and were evaluated for anticancer growth activity. Among these extracts, ethyl acetate extract of C militaris showed the best tumor growth inhibitory activity and the adjuvant effects in combination with sorafenib. As a result of biochemical analysis with serum, the combination of ethyl acetate extract of C militaris with sorafenib showed the adjuvant effects both improving hepatic function and relieving cancer-related fatigue. In addition, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolic profiling in liver tissues showed that the change of metabolism by ethyl acetate extract of C militaris with sorafenib was related with serum fatigue biomarkers. Therefore, the combination strategy such as ethyl acetate extraction of C militaris with sorafenib constitutes a promising therapeutic strategy in hepatocellular carcinoma, via the inhibition of cancer growth, the enhancement of liver function, as well as the alleviation of cancer-related fatigue.

Cordyceps is a genus of ascomycete fungi and is well known as one of the important medical fungi in Chinese, Korea, and other Asian countries, because of its various beneficial effects on human health. The pharmacological activities of Cordyceps extract are mainly focused on anti-cancer, anti-metastatic, and immune modulating effects. In the present study, we investigated whether the antiplatelet effect of ethanol extract of cultured Cordyceps militaris (CMEE) with FeCl3-induced arterial thrombosis model. We observed that CMEE exhibited a significant inhibitory effect against ADP and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. However, there were no significant differences in prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). These results suggest that antithrombotic activity of CMEE is related to antiplatelet effect rather than anticoagulation effect, and CMEE may be a positive effect on improving blood circulation against vessel injury and occlusion.

Cordyceps militaris is a type of fungus consumed by people all over the world and renowned for their nutritional benefits and herbal formulas to promote health and longevity. In the present study investigation was carried out to explore the therapeutic properties and neuroprotective effect of the C. militaris on ischemic brain neuronal injury, impairment of memory and learning in experimental rats induced by a global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in WISTAR rats. Vascular Dementia with transient global brain injuries induced by a four-vessel occlusion (4-VO) in WISTAR rats. Further, donepezil (5 mg/kg) and C. militaris was (100 and 300 mg/kg, p.o.) were orally administered for 7 days in 4-VO WISTAR rats. C. militaris has the ability to improve memory impairments due to global cerebral ischemia and scopolamine-induced memory deterioration. Our present findings suggest that C. militaris may be a potential candidate for the neuroprotection of hippocampus and the recovery of various vascular dementia or neuroinflammatory disorders.
