RESUMEN

This research outlines the fabrication of polymeric membranes and films of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), prepared via electrospinning and extrusion, respectively. These materials were subsequently coated with polyaniline (PANi) by using the in situ chemical polymerization technique. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs revealed that the best coatings were achieved when 3 and 30 min of contact time with the monomeric solution were used for the membrane and film, respectively. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectra, thermogravimetric studies, and contact angle measurements demonstrated proper interaction between PLA and PANi. The findings of these studies suggest that PLA membranes and films can serve as suitable substrates for the deposition of PANi, and the composite materials hold potential for use in environmental remediation applications.

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is sensitive to climate change and is responding by colonising the Western Mediterranean. To understand the rapid nesting increase in recent years in Spain, we sampled 45 hatchlings from 8 nests between 2016 and 2019. We sequenced a mtDNA D-loop region, genotyped 2291 SNPs using 2bRAD and collected data on clutch size, hatching success, and incubation duration. We confirmed that the colonisation has a Mediterranean and Atlantic mixed origin and we detected that these nests were laid by different females, except for two nests within the same season. Our results suggest that the recent increase in nesting is due to an increase in the number of colonising individuals rather than females born in the same area returning to breed. We hypothesize that this increase in the number of colonisers results from successful conservation efforts, feminisation of the populations of origin and earlier sexual maturation. However, the percentage of offspring females produced in Spain suggests that future returning individuals will aid to the settlement of the new population. These results allow defining the current status of this colonisation although future efforts are needed to detect remigrants to confirm the establishment of a resident population.

Urea is the nitrogen-containing fertilizer most used in agricultural fields; however, the nutrient given by the urea is lost into the environment. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of two soil textures by applying a prolonged-release system of urea (PRSU) on the N losses. This research shows an important decrease of the nitrate and ammonium losses from 24.91 to 87.94%. Also, the microbiological population increases after the application of the PRSU. It was concluded that both soil textures presented the same loss-reduction pattern, where the N from the nitrates and ammonium was reduced in the leachates, increasing the quality of the soil and the microbial population in both soil textures after the PRSU application.

RESUMEN

Identification and antibiogram of uropathogenic microorganisms from direct urine samples present a great clinical impact. Here, we present a combined procedure to determine identification (IDd) of bacteria through MALDI-TOF-MS technology and antibiogram (ATBd) using disk-plate diffusion technique, of UTI-producing Enterobacterales against the most used antibiotics. Ninety-four urine samples with presence of pyuria and Gram-negative bacilli were selected. The IDd showed a high success rate (90%). ATBd procedure showed a high correlation for tested antibiotics. This simplified, low cost and reduced work time two-step procedure significantly reduces results turnaround time and benefit the clinical management of patients with UTI.

The growing demand for cellulosic pulp presents an opportunity to explore alternatives to this material, focusing on utilizing agro-industrial residues. Mango's tegument is a rich source of cellulose, making it a valuable raw material for manufacturing single-use articles or blends with biopolymers. In this sense, employing conventional alkaline and acid chemical treatments, the mango's tegument was treated to obtain cellulosic pulp. The teguments were subjected to treatment with alkaline solutions (2% and 4% NaOH w/v) at 80 °C for 1 or 2 h or with an acetic acid solution (1:1 or 1:2 CH3COOH:H2O2) at 60-70 °C for 1 or 2 h. After treatment, an evaluation was conducted to assess the yield, color, chemical analysis, and structural, thermal, and morphological properties. The alkali treatments produced cellulosic pulps with a light color with 37-42% yield and reduced hemicellulose content. The acid treatments produced orange-brown cellulosic pulp with 47-48% yield and higher hemicellulose content. The acid pulps were thermally more stable (maximum decomposition at 348-357 °C) than the alkali pulps (maximum decomposition at 316-321 °C). The crystallinity index demonstrated that both treatments increased the crystallinity of the cellulose pulps compared with the untreated tegument. The thermal stability of cellulosic pulp at the processing temperatures of disposable tableware (50-120 °C) revealed that plates, bowls, trays, and cups could be produced. Another potential application is as a component of blends with biopolymers to make straws or rigid food packaging (trays) with reinforced structures.

Eutrophication is the excessive growth of algae in water bodies that causes biodiversity loss, reducing water quality and attractiveness to people. This is an important problem in water bodies. In this paper, we propose a low-cost sensor to monitor eutrophication in concentrations between 0 to 200 mg/L and in different mixtures of sediment and algae (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% algae, the rest are sediment). We use two light sources (infrared and RGB LED) and two photoreceptors at 90° and 180° of the light sources. The system has a microcontroller (M5stacks) that powers the light sources and obtains the signal received by the photoreceptors. In addition, the microcontroller is responsible for sending information and generating alerts. Our results show that the use of infrared light at 90° can determine the turbidity with an error of 7.45% in NTU readings higher than 2.73 NTUs, and the use of infrared light at 180° can measure the solid concentration with an error of 11.40%. According to the determination of the % of algae, the use of a neural network has a precision of 89.3% in the classification, and the determination of the mg/L of algae in water has an error of 17.95%.

Mango by-products are important sources of bioactive compounds generated by agro-industrial process. During mango processing, 35-60% of the fruit is discarded, in many cases without treatment, generating environmental problems and economic losses. These wastes are constituted by peels and seeds (tegument and kernel). The aim of this review was to describe the extraction, identification, and quantification of bioactive compounds, as well as their potential applications, published in the last ten years. The main bioactive compounds in mango by-products are polyphenols and carotenoids, among others. Polyphenols are known for their high antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Carotenoids show provitamin A and antioxidant activity. Among the mango by-products, the kernel has been studied more than tegument and peels because of the proportion and composition. The kernel represents 45-85% of the seed. The main bioactive components reported for the kernel are gallic, caffeic, cinnamic, tannic, and chlorogenic acids; methyl and ethyl gallates; mangiferin, rutin, hesperidin, and gallotannins; and penta-O-galloyl-glucoside and rhamnetin-3-[6-2-butenoil-hexoside]. Meanwhile, gallic acid, ferulic acid, and catechin are reported for mango peel. Although most of the reports are at the laboratory level, they include potential applications in the fields of food, active packaging, oil and fat, and pharmaceutics. At the market level, two trends will stimulate the industrial production of bioactive compounds from mango by-products: the increasing demand for industrialized fruit products (that will increase the by-products) and the increase in the consumption of bioactive ingredients.

Sea turtles generally lay several clutches of eggs in a single nesting season. While a negative correlation between water temperatures and the time required between constitutive nesting events (termed the internesting interval) has been previously reported in loggerhead Caretta caretta and green turtles Chelonia mydas, it is not understood whether this relationship remains constant across other sea turtle species. Here, we expanded upon these previous studies on loggerhead and green turtles by using larger sample sizes and including data from species with a wider range of body-sizes; specifically: hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata, leatherback Dermochelys coriacea, and olive ridley turtles Lepidochelys olivacea. In total, we compiled temperature data from biologgers deployed over internesting intervals on 23 loggerhead, 22 green, 7 hawksbill, 26 leatherback and 11 olive ridley turtles from nesting sites in 8 different countries. The relationship between the duration of the internesting interval and water temperatures in green and loggerhead turtles were statistically similar yet it differed between all other turtle species. Specifically, hawksbill turtles had much longer internesting intervals than green or loggerhead turtles even after controlling for temperature. In addition, both olive ridley and leatherback turtles exhibited thermal independence of internesting intervals presumably due to the large body-size of leatherback turtles and the unique capacity of ridley turtles to delay oviposition. The observed interspecific differences in the relationship between the length of the internesting interval and water temperatures indicate the complex and variable responses that each sea turtle species may exhibit due to environmental fluctuations and climate change.

Sea turtles are considered as bio-indicators for monitoring the efficiency of restoration measures to reduce marine litter impacts on health. However, the lack of extended and standardised empirical data has prevented the accurate analysis of the factors influencing litter ingestion and the relationships with individual health. Historic data collected from 1988 and standard data collected from 2016 were harmonised to enable such analyses on necropsied loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) in eight Mediterranean and North-East Atlantic countries. Litter was found in 69.24 % of the 1121 individuals, mostly single-use and fishing-related plastics. Spatial location, sex and life history stage explained a minor part of litter ingestion. While no relationships with health could be detected, indicating that all individuals can be integrated as bio-indicators, the mechanistic models published in literature suggest that the high proportion of plastics in the digestive contents (38.77 % per individual) could have long-term repercussions on population dynamics.

Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination is a technology that is commonly used to mitigate water scarcity problems; one of its disadvantages is the bio-fouling of the membranes used, which reduces its performance. In order to minimize this problem, this study prepared modified thin film composite (TFC) membranes by the incorporation of chitosan-silver particles (CS-Ag) of different molecular weights, and evaluated them in terms of their anti-biofouling and desalination performances. The CS-Ag were obtained using ionotropic gelation, and were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The modified membranes were synthetized by the incorporation of the CS-Ag using the interfacial polymerization method. The membranes (MCS-Ag) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle. Bactericidal tests by total cell count were performed using Bacillus halotolerans MCC1, and anti-adhesion properties were confirmed through biofilm cake layer thickness and total organic carbon (%). The desalination performance was defined by permeate flux, hydraulic resistance, salt rejection and salt permeance by using 2000 and 5000 mg L-1 of NaCl. The MCS-Ag-L presented superior permeate flux and salt rejection (63.3% and 1% higher, respectively), as well as higher bactericidal properties (76% less in total cell count) and anti-adhesion capacity (biofilm thickness layer 60% and total organic carbon 75% less, compared with the unmodified membrane). The highest hydraulic resistance value was for MCS-Ag-M. In conclusion, the molecular weight of CS-Ag significantly influences the desalination and the antimicrobial performances of the membranes; as the molecular weight decreases, the membranes' performances increase. This study shows a possible alternative for increasing membrane useful life in the desalination process.

We provide the raw data of 44 satellite-tracked loggerhead sea turtles from different life-stages collected between 2016 and 2018. Depending on life-stage and tag availability a different satellite tag was attached to the loggerhead carapace. Location data were collected using the Argos system. We made publically available for the first time in the Mediterranean: (i) the satellite-tracking data for 17 one-year-aged post-hatchlings of loggerhead sea turtle came from two nests laid on the Mediterranean Spanish coast; (ii) the satellite-tracking data for 4 loggerhead nesting females collected from nesting events occurred on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Besides, another 23 juvenile and adult loggerhead sea turtles were monitored and their data were made also available. Our dataset provide the turtle identity name or number, the date and coordinates of the location data, and the Argos location class associated. Our data contribute to the knowledge about the spatial use of the loggerhead sea turtle in the Mediterranean Sea and could be used in further analysis regarding habitat use and dispersal of this species in the Mediterranean Sea. Specially, nesting females and post-hatchlings data contribute to shed light about these life-stages related to nesting events out of the usual nesting range in the western Mediterranean, for which data still remains scarce. Also, data could be compared to further similar research in satellite-tracking loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean basin.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Identificar los niveles de estrés, ansiedad y depresión presentes en los universitarios durante la pandemia en relación con el apoyo que brinda la familia. Materiales y métodos: Se trata de un estudio de tipo cuantitativo con un diseño descriptivo, correlacional y transversal. La muestra (n=105) fueron estudiantes de la Facultad de Enfermería de la Universidad Veracruzana; se obtuvo a través de un muestreo no probabilístico a conveniencia. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de un instrumento digital (Google Forms). Las variables se midieron utilizando la Escala de Depresión, Ansiedad y Estrés (DASS-21) y el Inventario de Percepción de Apoyo Familiar (IPAF). Los datos fueron analizados mediante estadística descriptiva y la prueba de correlación de Spearman. Resultados: Los resultados evidencian que no existe una asociación entre las variables estudiadas: r=-0.192, n=105, p=0.134, pero sí existe depresión (85.8 %), ansiedad (84 %) y estrés (77.4 %) en los estudiantes, aunque se presentan de forma leve, y un nivel medio bajo de apoyo familiar (afecto 61.3%, adaptabilidad 62.3% y autonomía 40.6 %). Conclusión: Los trastornos por ansiedad, estrés y depresión afectan gradualmente diversas esferas de actuación personal de los estudiantes, por lo cual una intervención oportuna y preventiva es relevante.


ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the levels of stress, anxiety, and depression present in university students during the pandemic in relation to the support provided by the family. Materials and Methods: This is a quantitative study with a descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional design. The sample (n = 105) was composed of students of the Faculty of Nursing of the Veracruzana University; it was obtained through convenience non-probabilistic sampling. The data was collected through a digital instrument (Google Forms). The variables were measured using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Inventory of Perception of Family Support (IPAF). The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman correlation test. Results: The results show that there is no association between the studied variables r = -0.192, n = 105, p = 0.134., but if there is depression (85.8%), anxiety (84%), and stress (77.4%) in the students, although in a mild form, and a low medium level of family support (affection 61.3%, adaptability 62.3%, and autonomy 40.6%). Conclusion: Anxiety, stress, and depression disorders gradually affect various spheres of personal performance of students, for which a timely and preventive intervention is relevant.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a worldwide catastrophe. Its impact, not only economically, but also socially and in terms of human lives, was unexpected. Each of the many mechanisms to fight the contagiousness of the illness has been proven to be extremely important. One of the most important mechanisms is the use of facemasks. However, the wearing the facemasks incorrectly makes this prevention method useless. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and especially facial recognition techniques can be used to detect misuses and reduce virus transmission, especially indoors. In this paper, we present an intelligent method to automatically detect when facemasks are being worn incorrectly in real-time scenarios. Our proposal uses Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with transfer learning to detect not only if a mask is used or not, but also other errors that are usually not taken into account but that may contribute to the virus spreading. The main problem that we have detected is that there is currently no training set for this task. It is for this reason that we have requested the participation of citizens by taking different selfies through an app and placing the mask in different positions. Thus, we have been able to solve this problem. The results show that the accuracy achieved with transfer learning slightly improves the accuracy achieved with convolutional neural networks. Finally, we have also developed an Android-app demo that validates the proposal in real scenarios.

Resumen Introducción: Las infecciones del tracto urinario (ITU) presentan una elevada prevalencia en el ámbito comunitario. Un rápido diagnóstico microbiológico es esencial para asegurar una terapia adecuada y efectiva. Objetivo: Evaluar un kit de antibiograma rápido (KAR®) en formato point-of-care para la detección rápida de ITU y sensibilidad antimicrobiana. Material y Métodos: El dispositivo KAR® se diseñó y desarrolló en colaboración con ingenieros técnicos y microbiólogos clínicos. Su evaluación se realizó a través de un estudio multicéntrico en el que participaron tres hospitales españoles. Para ello, se realizaron distintos ensayos in vivo con el fin de determinar la correlación del dispositivo con las técnicas microbiológicas de referencia. Resultados: Se ensayó un total de 400 muestras de orinas procedentes de pacientes con sospecha de ITU. El dispositivo KAR® proporcionó rápidos resultados (tiempo medio de positividad de 7,8 ± 1,5 h) con 97% de sensibilidad, 89% de especificidad y 87% de concordancia para la detección de bacteriuria significativa. Los porcentajes de especificidad para los antimicrobianos testados fueron: ciprofloxacina (97%), fosfomicina (94%), cotrimoxazol (84%), ampicilina (80%) y amoxicilina/ácido clavulánico (55%). Conclusión: El dispositivo KAR® puede ser una herramienta útil para el diagnóstico de ITU en pacientes ambulatorios, especialmente en áreas de bajo nivel socio-económico.


Abstract Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI) presents a high prevalence in the community setting. Rapid and accurate microbiological diagnosis is essential to ensure adequate and effective therapy. Aim: To evaluate a rapid antibiogram kit (KAR®) in point-of-care format for rapid detection of UTI and antibiotic susceptibility. Methods: The KAR® device has been designed and developed in collaboration with technical engineers and clinical microbiologists. Its evaluation has been carried out through a multicenter study in which three Spanish hospitals have participated. Thus, different in vivo tests have been implemented in order to determine device correlation with the reference microbiological techniques. Results: During the study period, a total of 400 urine samples from patients with suspected ITU were tested. The KAR® device provided fast results (mean positivity time of 7,8 ± 1,5 hours) with 97% sensitivity, 89% specificity and 87% agreement for the detection of significant bacteriuria. The percentages of specificity for the antibiotics tested were: ciprofloxacin (97%), fosfomycin (94%),cotrimoxazole (84%), ampicillin (80%) and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (55%). Conclusion: The KAR® device could be a useful tool for diagnosing UTI in outpatients, especially in areas of low socio-economic level.

INTRODUCTION: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. The etiology and effects derived from this infection are set by molecular techniques and cytological diagnosis, respectively. In the present study, data obtained by an opportunist screening of cervical cancer in La Ribera region are revised and related statistically. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data considering different variables such as age, degree of lesion, HPV type detected and number of virus in coinfection were collected from 1,372 HPV positive cytology samples. HPV detection was carried out by means of three molecular techniques and the degree of lesion was analyzed by cytological diagnosis (Bethesda). In order to determine the relationship between different selected variables, several statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: Only degree of lesion variable showed a direct relationship with the rest of variables, increasing with aging process, viral oncogenicity, presence of at least one high-risk virus and with the fact of being mono-infected. The probability of presenting a higher-level degree of lesion multiplied by 28.4 when high-risk HPV was detected in mono-infection. CONCLUSIONS: HPV molecular detection is the most suitable technique to perform a cervix cancer primary screening for the management of women with negative cytological diagnose. The number of detected types is statistically related to the degree of lesion. The establishment of a properly regulated screening to identify HPV infection, and therefore, of cervical cancer risk, is essential


INTRODUCCIÓN: El virus del papiloma humano (VPH) es la principal causa de cáncer cervical. La etiología y los efectos derivados de esta infección se establecen mediante técnicas moleculares y diagnóstico citológico, respectivamente. En el presente estudio, los datos obtenidos por un cribado oportunista de cáncer cervical en la comarca de La Ribera se revisaron y se relacionaron estadísticamente. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se recopilaron datos que incluyeron diferentes variables como la edad, el grado de lesión, el tipo de VPH detectado y el número de virus en coinfección de 1.372 citologías positivas para VPH. La detección del VPH se realizó mediante tres técnicas moleculares y el grado de lesión se analizó mediante diagnóstico citológico (Bethesda). Para determinar la relación entre las diferentes variables, se realizaron varios análisis estadísticos. RESULTADOS: Sólo la variable del grado de lesión mostró una relación directa con el resto de variables, aumentando con el proceso de envejecimiento, la oncogenicidad viral, la presencia de al menos un virus de alto riesgo y el hecho de estar mono-infectado. La probabilidad de presentar un mayor nivel de lesión se multiplicó por 28,4 cuando se detectó VPH de alto riesgo en la mono-infección. CONCLUSIONES: La detección molecular del VPH es la técnica más adecuada para realizar un cribado primario del cáncer de cuello uterino para el manejo de mujeres con diagnóstico citológico negativo. El número de tipos detectados está estadísticamente relacionado con el grado de lesión. El establecimiento de un cribado regulado adecuadamente para identificar la infección por VPH y, por lo tanto, del riesgo de cáncer cervical, es esencial

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTI) presents a high prevalence in the community setting. Rapid and accurate microbiological diagnosis is essential to ensure adequate and effective therapy. AIM: To evaluate a rapid antibiogram kit (KAR®) in point-of-care format for rapid detection of UTI and antibiotic susceptibility. METHODS: The KAR® device has been designed and developed in collaboration with technical engineers and clinical microbiologists. Its evaluation has been carried out through a multicenter study in which three Spanish hospitals have participated. Thus, different in vivo tests have been implemented in order to determine device correlation with the reference microbiological techniques. RESULTS: During the study period, a total of 400 urine samples from patients with suspected ITU were tested. The KAR® device provided fast results (mean positivity time of 7,8 ± 1,5 hours) with 97% sensitivity, 89% specificity and 87% agreement for the detection of significant bacteriuria. The percentages of specificity for the antibiotics tested were: ciprofloxacin (97%), fosfomycin (94%),cotrimoxazole (84%), ampicillin (80%) and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (55%). CONCLUSION: The KAR® device could be a useful tool for diagnosing UTI in outpatients, especially in areas of low socio-economic level.

The following protocol is intended to respond to the requirements set by the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directives (MSFD) for the D10C3 Criteria reported in the Commission Decision (EU), related to the amount of litter ingested by marine animals. Standardized methodologies for extracting litter items ingested from dead sea turtles along with guidelines on data analysis are provided. The protocol starts with the collection of dead sea turtles and classification of samples according to the decomposition status. Turtle necropsy must be performed in authorized centers and the protocol described here explains the best procedure for gastrointestinal (GI) tract isolation. The three parts of the GI (esophagus, stomach, intestine) should be separated, opened lengthways and contents filtered using a 1 mm mesh sieve. The article describes the classification and quantification of ingested litter, classifying GI contents into seven different categories of marine litter and two categories of natural remains. The quantity of ingested litter should be reported as total dry mass (weight in grams, with two decimal places) and abundance (number of items). The protocol proposes two possible scenarios to achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES). First: "There should be less than X% of sea turtles having Y g or more plastic in the GI in samples of 50-100 dead turtles from each sub-region", where Y is the average weight of plastic ingested and X% is the percentage of sea turtles with more weight (in grams) of plastic than Y. The second one, which considers the food remain versus plastic as a proxy of individual health, is: "There should be less than X% of sea turtles having more weight of plastic (in grams) than food remains in the GI in samples of 50-100 dead turtles from each sub-region".

Smart cities are ecosystems where novel ideas and emerging technologies meet to improve economy, environment, governance, living, and mobility. One of the pillars of smart cities is transport, with the improvement of mobility and the reduction of traffic accidents being some of the current key challenges. With this purpose, this manuscript reviews the state-of-the-art of communications and applications in which different actors of the road are involved. Thus, the objectives of this survey are intended to determine who, when, and about what is being researched around smart cities. Particularly, the goal is to situate the focus of scientific and industrial progress on V2X, I2X, and P2X communication to establish a taxonomy that reduces ambiguous acronyms around the communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians, as well as to determine what the trends and future technologies are that will lead to more powerful applications. To this end, this literature review article presents a comprehensive study including a representative collection of the 100 most cited papers and patents published in the literature together with a statistical bibliometric analysis of 14,364 keywords over 3422 contributions between 1997 and 2018. As a result, this work provides a technological profile considering different dimensions along the paper, such as the type of communication, use case, country, organization, terminology, and year.
