RESUMEN

We introduce a spectral analysis method in picosecond ultrasonics to derive strain pulse shapes in a opaque sample with known optical properties. The method makes use of both the amplitude and phase of optical transient relative reflectance changes obtained, for example, by interferometry. We demonstrate this method through numerical simulation and by analysis of experimental results for a chromium film.

RESUMEN

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is a nano-optical approach to extract spatially resolved chemical information with nanometer precision. However, in the case of direct-illumination TERS, which is often employed in commercial TERS instruments, strong fluorescence or far-field Raman signals from the illuminated areas may be excited as a background. They may overwhelm the near-field TERS signal and dramatically decrease the near-field to far-field signal contrast of TERS spectra. It is still challenging for TERS to study the surface of fluorescent materials or a bulk sample that cannot be placed on an Au/Ag substrate. In this study, we developed an indirect-illumination TERS probe that allows a laser to be focused on a flat interface of a thin-film waveguide located far away from the region generating the TERS signal. Surface plasmon polaritons are generated stably on the waveguide and eventually accumulated at the tip apex, thereby producing a spatially and energetically confined hotspot to ensure stable and high-resolution TERS measurements with a low background. With this thin-film waveguide probe, TERS spectra with obvious contrast from a diamond plate can be acquired. Furthermore, the TERS technique based on this probe exhibits excellent TERS signal stability, a long lifetime, and good spatial resolution. This technique is expected to have commercial potential and enable further popularization and development of TERS technology as a powerful analytical method.

RESUMEN

Terahertz (THz) irradiation has been exploited in biomedical applications involving non-invasive manipulation of living cells. We developed an apparatus for studying the effects of THz pulse irradiation on living human induced pluripotent stem cells. The THz pulse of the maximum electric field reached 0.5 MV/cm and was applied for one hour with 1 kHz repetition to the entire cell-culture area, a diameter of 1 mm. RNA sequencing of global gene-expression revealed that many THz-regulated genes were driven by zinc-finger transcription factors. Combined with a consideration of the interactions of metal ions and a THz electric field, these results imply that the local intracellular concentration of metal ions, such as Zn2+, was changed by the effective electrical force of our THz pulse.

RESUMEN

We developed a thin-film silicon waveguide with gradually changing thickness for generating a near-field optical spot. Theoretical studies show that the surface plasmons that are resonantly excited on the waveguide generate a hot spot with a wide spectral range. We experimentally confirmed generation of the near-field hot spot using continuous waves at 850 and 660 nm wavelengths. This waveguide, which can generate the enhanced electric field by normal incident of the excitation beam under situations of the practical use, is promising for broadband near-field optical technologies.

RESUMEN

We have systematically investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of crystallization that occur in the phase-change material Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5} upon irradiation with an intense terahertz (THz) pulse. THz-pump-optical-probe spectroscopy revealed that Zener tunneling induces a nonlinear increase in the conductivity of the crystalline phase. This fact causes the large enhancement of electric field associated with the THz pulses only at the edge of the crystallized area. The electric field concentrating in this area causes a temperature increase via Joule heating, which in turn leads to nanometer-scale crystal growth parallel to the field and the formation of filamentary conductive domains across the sample.

RESUMEN

We have developed and characterized a plasmon-excitation scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscope with sharpened single carbon nanotube probe. The developed microscope can optically capture differences in the refractive index of single-nanometer surface structures. Statistical analysis enabled us to estimate the precision of the optical length measurement to 1.8 nm.

RESUMEN

We have developed a real-time terahertz time-domain polarization analyzer by using 80-MHz repetition-rate femtosecond laser pulses. Our technique is based on the spinning electro-optic sensor method, which we recently proposed and demonstrated by using a regenerative amplifier laser system; here we improve the detection scheme in order to be able to use it with a femtosecond laser oscillator with laser pulses of a much higher repetition rate. This improvement brings great advantages for realizing broadband, compact and stable real-time terahertz time-domain polarization measurement systems for scientific and industrial applications.
