RESUMEN

The tomato as a raw material for processing is globally important and is pivotal in dietary and agronomic research due to its nutritional, economic, and health significance. This study explored the potential of machine learning (ML) for predicting tomato quality, utilizing data from 48 cultivars and 28 locations in Hungary over 5 seasons. It focused on °Brix, lycopene content, and colour (a/b ratio) using extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and artificial neural network (ANN) models. The results revealed that XGBoost consistently outperformed ANN, achieving high accuracy in predicting °Brix (R² = 0.98, RMSE = 0.07) and lycopene content (R² = 0.87, RMSE = 0.61), and excelling in colour prediction (a/b ratio) with a R² of 0.93 and RMSE of 0.03. ANN lagged behind particularly in colour prediction, showing a negative R² value of -0.35. Shapley additive explanation's (SHAP) summary plot analysis indicated that both models are effective in predicting °Brix and lycopene content in tomatoes, highlighting different aspects of the data. SHAP analysis highlighted the models' efficiency (especially in °Brix and lycopene predictions) and underscored the significant influence of cultivar choice and environmental factors like climate and soil. These findings emphasize the importance of selecting and fine-tuning the appropriate ML model for enhancing precision agriculture, underlining XGBoost's superiority in handling complex agronomic data for quality assessment.

Managing crop yields and optimizing water use is a global challenge, as fresh water supply decreases rapidly and demand remains high. Therefore, understanding how plants react to varying water levels is crucial for efficient water usage. This study evaluates how tomato plants adapt to varying water levels (100%, 50% of crop evapotranspiration, and non-irrigated control) over two growing seasons in 2020 and 2021. Root images were captured weekly during an 8-week monitoring period in 2020 and 6 weeks in 2021 using a non-destructive CI-600 in-situ root imager at depths between 10 and 70 cm. Under water stress, plants developed deeper, more extensive root systems to maximize water uptake, consistent with prior research. Root depth and architecture varied with soil depth and the severity of water stress. Year-to-year variations were also found, likely due to changes in irrigation levels and environmental conditions such as temperature. SPAD values were higher under control conditions, especially in the 2021 growing season, suggesting reduced chlorophyll degradation, while no significant differences were observed in chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) between treatments, suggesting stable photosynthetic efficiency under varied water stress conditions. These findings contribute to our understanding of root zone optimization and drought-resilient cultivar breeding, contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.

Tomato-based products are significant components of vegetable consumption. The processing tomato industry is unquestionably in need of a rapid definition method for measuring soluble solids content (SSC) and lycopene content. The objective was to find the best chemometric method for the estimation of SSC and lycopene content from visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) absorbance and reflectance data so that they could be determined without the use of chemicals in the process. A total of 326 Vis-NIR absorbance and reflectance spectra and reference measurements were available to calibrate and validate prediction models. The obtained spectra can be manipulated using different preprocessing methods and multivariate data analysis techniques to develop prediction models for these two main quality attributes of tomato fruits. Eight different method combinations were compared in homogenized and intact fruit samples. For SSC prediction, the results showed that the best root mean squared error of cross-validation (RMSECV) originated from raw absorbance (0.58) data and with multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) (0.59) of intact fruit in Vis-NIR, and first derivatives of reflectance (R 2 = 0.41) for homogenate in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) region. The best predictive ability for lycopene content of homogenate in the SWIR range (R 2 = 0.47; RMSECV = 17.95 mg kg-1) was slightly lower than that of Vis-NIR (R 2 = 0.68; 15.07 mg kg-1). This study reports the suitability of two Vis-NIR spectrometers, absorbance/reflectance spectra, preprocessing methods, and partial least square (PLS) regression to predict SSC and lycopene content of intact tomato fruit and its homogenate.

Production cross sections of 153,145Sm via alpha-particle-induced reactions on natNd were measured up to 23 MeV. The stacked-foil activation technique and high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry were adopted for the measurement. The obtained cross sections were compared with the literature data and the TENDL-2019 and TENDL-2021 values. Physical thick target yields of the two radionuclides were derived from the measured cross sections.

RESUMEN

Excitation functions of alpha-particle induced reactions on natNd up to 50 MeV were measured at the RIKEN AVF cyclotron. To derive cross sections activation method, stacked target technique and gamma-ray spectrometry were adopted. Formations of 153,145Sm, 151,150,149,148m,148g,144,143Pm, and 149,147Nd were investigated. The results were compared with the previous experimental data and the TENDL-2019 data. Discrepancies among most of them were found.

Activation cross sections of the medically interesting radionuclide 45Ti were investigated in the deuteron-induced reaction on 45Sc. 45Ti can be produced in a radioactive-contamination-free form in the 45Sc(d,2n)45Ti reaction below 15 MeV deuteron energy. The stacked foil activation technique and γ-ray spectrometry were used to determine the cross sections. The physical yield of 45Ti was deduced from the measured cross sections.

RESUMEN

Despite interesting properties, the use of 67Cu, 186Re and 47Sc theranostic radionuclides in preclinical studies and clinical trials is curtailed by their limited availability due to a lack of widely established production methods. An IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP) was initiated to identify important technical issues related to the production and quality control of these emerging radionuclides and related radiopharmaceuticals, based on the request from IAEA Member States. The international team worked on targetry, separation, quality control and radiopharmaceutical aspects of the radionuclides obtained from research reactors and cyclotrons leading to preparation of a standard recommendations for all Member States. The CRP was initiated in 2016 with fourteen participants from thirteen Member States from four continents. Extraordinary results on the production, quality control and preclinical evaluation of selected radionuclides were reported in this project that was finalized in 2020. The outcomes, outputs and results of this project achieved by participating Member States are described in this minireview.

Protein recycling is important for maintaining homeostasis of the Golgi and its cisternae. The Vps54 (Scat) protein, a subunit of the GARP tethering complex, is a central factor in retrograde transport to the trans-Golgi. We found the scat(1) mutant to be male sterile in Drosophila with individualization problems occurring during spermatogenesis. Another typically observed phenotype was the abnormal nuclear structure in elongated mutant cysts. When examining the structure and function of the Golgi, a failure in acrosome formation and endosome-Golgi vesicular transport were found in the scat(1) mutant. This acrosome formation defect was due to a fault in the trans-Golgi side of the acroblast ribbon. When testing a mutation in a second retrograde transport protein, Fws, a subunit of the conserved oligomeric Golgi (COG) tethering complex, the acroblast structure, was again disrupted. fws(P) caused a similar, albeit milder, acrosome and sperm individualization phenotype as the scat(1) mutant. In the case of fws(P) the cis side of the acroblast ribbon was dispersed, in-line with the intra-Golgi retrograde function of COG. Our results highlight the importance of an intact acroblast for acrosome formation, nuclear elongation and therefore sperm maturation. Moreover, these results suggest the importance of retrograde tethering complexes in the formation of a functional Golgi ribbon.

Telomere length in Drosophila is maintained by targeted transposition of three non-LTR retrotransposons: HeT-A, TART and TAHRE (HTT), but understanding the regulation of this process is hindered by our poor knowledge of HTT associated proteins. We have identified new protein components of the HTT array: Chromator (Chro), the TRF2/DREF complex and the sumoylation machinery. Chro was localized on telomeric HTT arrays by immunostaining, where it may interact with Prod directly, as indicated by yeast two-hybrid interaction, co-IP, and colocalization on polytene chromosomes. The TRF2/DREF complex may promote the open structure of HTT chromatin. The protein interactions controlling HTT chromatin structure and telomere length may be modulated by sumoylation.

We report in this paper that the PROD protein, encoded by the gene proliferation disrupter (prod), is associated with the telomeric chromatin in Drosophila melanogaster. It binds to a region just upstream of the promoter of the telomere-specific retrotransposon HeT-A, which is located in the long 3'untranslated region of the element near its oligo(A) tail. Reduction of PROD in prod heterozygote flies results in elevated levels of HeT-A RNA in the ovaries, suggesting that PROD functions as a repressor of HeT-A transcriptional activity at the telomeres.
