RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Good-quality drugs that fulfill the regulatory parameters and are produced per the current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) standards are very critical for the best therapeutic outcomes. However, the variety of branded drugs circulation in the market often put clinicians and pharmacists in a difficult situation of choice due to the possibility of interchangeability among brands, so we should ascertain the quality of the various brands of drugs, available in the drug market. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the quality and physicochemical equivalence of six brands of carbamazepine tablets that are commercially available in Dessie town, Northeast Ethiopia. METHODS: An experimental study design was used. Six different brands of carbamazepine tablets were purchased from community pharmacies in Dessie town, Northeast Ethiopia, which were selected using simple random sampling methods. Identification, weight variation, friability, hardness, disintegration, dissolution test, and assay for the content of active ingredients were evaluated according to the procedures described in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and British Pharmacopeia (BP), and the results were compared with USP and BP standards. The difference (f1) and similarity (f2) factors were calculated to assess in vitro bioequivalence requirements. RESULTS: The identification test results revealed that all samples contained the stated active pharmaceutical ingredients and all brands of carbamazepine tablets complied with the official specification for weight variation, friability, and hardness tests. The percentage concentration of carbamazepine was found in the range of 97.85 to 102.09, which met the USP specification of 92% to 108% of the stated amount. Similarly, all samples fulfilled disintegration time (i.e., ≤ 30 min) except brand CA1 (34.183 min) and dissolution tolerance limits (i.e., Q ≥ 75% at 60 min), which was found in the range of 91.673% -97.124%. The difference factor (f1) values were < 15 and the similarity factor (f2) values were > 50 for all the tested brands of carbamazepine tablets. CONCLUSION: The present study revealed that all brands of carbamazepine 200 mg tablets met the quality control parameters as per pharmacopoeial specifications except the disintegration test of brand CA1, and could be used each brand interchangeably to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.

RESUMEN

Background: The roots of Impatiens rothii has been used as a traditional remedy for painful conditions, rheumatism, isthmus and crural aches. However, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of this plant have yet to be scientifically confirmed. The purpose of this study was to explore possible analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities 80% methanolic root extract of Impatiens rothii. Methods: To obtain the crude extract, the roots of Impatiens rothii that had been dried and ground up were macerated in 80% methanol. The analgesic activity was determined using acetic acid-induced writhing and hot plate tests in mice, whereas the anti-inflammatory activity was analyzed using carrageenan-induced paw edema model in rats. The extract was orally administered at a dose of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg. Results: All tested doses of Impatiens rothii extract showed significant analgesic activity (p<0.05) at observations of 30 to 120 minutes compared to the negative control in the hot plate test. In acetic acid-induced writhing test all tested doses of the 80% methanol extract of Impatiens rothii significantly (p < 0.001) reduced the number of writhing. In comparison to the control group, all tested doses displayed a significant decrease in paw edema, which appeared 2-5 hours after induction (p<0.05). Conclusion: From the results of this study, it can be stated that 80% methanolic extract of Impatiens rothii possessed substantial analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities, hence providing scientific basis for the use of this plant in the treatment of pain and inflammatory diseases.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Although most deaths are preventable with simple and inexpensive measures, death from diarrhea accounts for one out of nine deaths in children worldwide which makes it the disease with the highest mortality rate in children under the age of five. Therefore, this study is aims to investigate diarrhea prevalence and risk factors among children under the age of five in Jawi district, Awi Zone, Ethiopia. Materials and methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was done among 440 study participants from March to June 2019. Data were collected with a face-to-face interviewer-administered questionnaire. Data was entered into EPI Info version 7 software and cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Binary logistic regression was done to assess independent factors associated with the dependent variable. A significant association was determined using an adjusted odds ratio at a confidence level of 95% and a p-value of less than or equal to 0.05. Results: In the current study, the overall under-five children diarrheal disease was found to be 15.5%. Diarrheal disease prevalence in model and non-model households was 10.9 and 20%, respectively. Shallow water [AOR: 6.12, 95%CI; (1.52, 24.58)], and maternal diarrhea [AOR: 4.11, 95%CI; (1.75, 9.61)] were determinants of childhood diarrhea. Place of birth [OR: 2.52, 95%CI (1.16, 5.49)] and maternal diarrhea [AOR: 3.50; 95%CI (1.28, 9.56)] in non-model households were also determinants of childhood diarrhea. Conclusion: Under-five children diarrheal disease was found to be high in the Jawi District. Thus, to decrease the disease prevalence in the study area, the health extension workers aim to better educate the mothers on how to handle diarrheal diseases. It is also better for concerned stakeholders to promote institutional delivery and to give access to safe water for the community.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is a major public health problem in developing countries like Ethiopia. Cervical cancer screening service has been offered to high-risk groups in Ethiopia since 2013. However, there is no evidence on the willingness to pay for the screening. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the female health professionals' willingness to pay for cervical cancer screening at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: Institutional based cross-sectional study design was used to assess the health professionals' willingness to pay for the cervical screening from March to April, 2018. Simple random sampling technique was used to select study participants from a list of female health professionals who has been working for the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Gondar. The data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and exported to STATA version 14 for analysis. Tobit models were used to identify factors which had statistical significant association with willingness to pay for cervical cancer screening service. RESULTS: A total of 392 respondents participated in the study with a response rate of 92.7%. The majority (83.4%) of participants were willing to pay for cervical cancer screening. The average amount of money they were willing to pay was ETB 194.7 (US$7.16) per service. Age ≥ 30 years, educational status, perceived seriousness of cervical cancer, perceived quality of cervical cancer screening service and monthly income were significantly associated with willingness to pay for cervical cancer screening. CONCLUSION: High proportion of study participants were willing to pay for cervical cancer screening. Therefore, the policy makers can scale-up cervical cancer screening by setting appropriate fee for service charge. They can also raise awareness of cervical cancer and offer quality service in order to increase the benefits of the program.
