RESUMEN

This study investigates the nonlinear frequency conversions between the six polarization modes of a two-mode birefringent fiber. The aim is to demonstrate that the selective excitation of different combinations of linearly polarized spatial modes at the pump wavelength initiates distinct intermodal-vectorial four-wave mixing processes. In particular, this study shows that exciting two orthogonally polarized LP01 and LP11 modes can lead to the simultaneous generation of up to three pairs of different spatial modes of orthogonal polarizations at different wavelengths. The role of the phase birefringence of the spatial modes in the phase matching of such a four-wave mixing process is explained. Moreover, the theoretical predictions are verified through numerical simulations based on coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and are also confirmed experimentally in a commercially available birefringent fiber.

RESUMEN

We present a direct comparison between two types of femtosecond 2 µm sources used for seeding of an ultrafast thulium-doped fiber amplifier based on all-normal dispersion supercontinuum and soliton self-frequency shift. Both nonlinear effects were generated in microstructured silica fibers, pumped with low-power femtosecond pulses at 1.56 µm originating from an erbium-doped fiber laser. We performed a full characterization of both nonlinear processes, including their shot-to-shot stability, phase coherence, and relative intensity noise. The results revealed that the solitons show comparable performance to supercontinuum in terms of relative intensity noise and shot-to-shot stability, despite the anomalous dispersion regime. Both sources can be successfully used as seeds for Tm-doped fiber amplifiers as an alternative to Tm-doped oscillators. The results show that the sign of chromatic dispersion of the fiber is not crucial for obtaining a stable, high-quality, and low-noise spectral conversion process when pumped with sub-50 fs laser pulses.

RESUMEN

We experimentally investigate the spectro-temporal characteristics of coherent supercontinuum (SC) pulses generated in several implementations of silica and soft-glass all-normal dispersion (ANDi) photonic crystal fibers optimized for pumping with Erbium (Er):fiber femtosecond laser technology. We characterize the resulting SC using time-domain ptychography, which is especially suitable for the measurement of complex, spectrally broadband ultrashort pulses. The measurements of the ANDi SC pulses reveal intricate pulse shapes, considerable temporal fine structure, and oscillations on time scales of < 25 femtoseconds, which differ from the smoothness and simplicity of temporal profiles obtained in numerical simulations and observed in previous experiments. We link the measured complex features to temporal sub-structures of the pump pulse, such as pre- and post-pulses and low-level pedestals, which are common in high pulse energy ultrafast Er:fiber systems. We also observe spectro-temporal structures consistent with incoherent noise amplification in weakly birefringent fiber samples. Our results highlight the importance of the pump source and polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers for high-quality SC generation and have practical relevance for many ultrafast photonics applications employing ANDi fiber-based SC sources.

RESUMEN

We report the generation of coherent octave-spanning supercontinuum in an all-fiber system, without any free-space optical components. The setup uses the femtosecond fiber laser as a pump and an all-normal dispersion microstructured fiber as a medium for supercontinuum generation. The generated spectrum is characterized both experimentally and numerically and shows a broad bandwidth (1.1-2.2 µm), a high signal to noise ratio reaching 100 at maximum, a high coherence (closing to 1), linear polarization and average output power up to 57 mW. The source is characterized by exceptional simplicity and does not require any alignment (the nonlinear fiber is spliced to the pump) which finally opens the path to outside-lab applications of supercontinuum radiation.

RESUMEN

We performed an experimental analysis of the effect of phase mask alignment on the Bragg grating reflection spectra around the wavelength of λB = 1560 nm fabricated in polymer optical fiber by using a multiple order phase mask. We monitored the evolution of the reflection spectra for different values of the angle ϕ by describing the tilt between the phase mask and the fiber. We observed that the peak at λB is split into five separate peaks for the nonzero tilt and that separation of the peaks increases linearly with ϕ. Through comparison with theoretical data we were able to identify the five peaks as products of different grating periodicities, which are associated with the interference of different pairs of diffraction orders on the phase mask.

RESUMEN

Observation of the efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) in silica fibers drew a lot of interest, as second-order processes in centrosymmetric materials should not occur. In this Letter, we extended a theoretical model of self-organized SHG to include an attenuation and investigated the influence of fiber loss on the self-organized SHG process. We performed calculations of energy conversion efficiency for SHG in microstructured optical fibers. Finally, we referred the simulation results to the measured SHG efficiency in a microstructured side-hole germanium-doped silica fiber. The extended model should be applied for the fibers with loss beyond 0.01 dB/m. Even in such fibers, efficient SHG without an external second-harmonic beam is possible.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a polarized all-normal dispersion supercontinuum generated in a birefringent silica microstructured fiber spanning beyond 2.5 µm. To our knowledge, this is the spectra reaching the furthest in mid-infrared ever generated in normal dispersion silica fibers. The generation process was studied experimentally and numerically with 70 fs pump pulses operating at different wavelengths on short propagation distances of 48 mm and 122 mm. The all-normal operation was limited by the zero-dispersion wavelength at 2.56 µm and spectral broadening was stopped by OH absorption peak at 2.72 µm. We identified the asymmetry between propagation in both polarization axes and showed that pumping along a slow fiber axis is beneficial for a higher degree of polarization. Numerical simulations of the generation process conducted by solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and coupled NLSEs system showed good agreement with experimental spectra.

RESUMEN

We report numerical and experimental demonstrations of flexible group-velocity dispersion regimes in step-index tellurite fibers by fine control of the fiber core diameter. Our simple fiber design allowed us to explore various nonlinear propagation regimes beyond 2 µm, which involved careful control of four-wave mixing processes. Combined with the recent development of 2 µm fiber lasers, we present an easy way to tailor supercontinuum generation and related coherence features in the high-demand 1.5-3.5 µm spectral region.

RESUMEN

For the first time to our knowledge, we demonstrate a coherent supercontinuum in silica fibers reaching 2.2 µm in a long wavelength range. The process of supercontinuum generation was studied experimentally and numerically in two microstructured fibers with a germanium doped core, having flat all-normal chromatic dispersion optimized for pumping at 1.55 µm. The fibers were pumped with two pulse lasers operating at 1.56 µm with different pulse duration times equal respectively to 23 fs and 460 fs. The experimental results are in a good agreement with the simulations conducted by solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the split-step Fourier method. The simulations also confirmed high coherence of the generated spectra and revealed that their long wavelength edge (2.2 µm) is related to OH contamination. Therefore, improving the fibers purity will result in further up-shift of the long wavelength spectra limit.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate for the first time in optical fibers the "dispersion of the axes" phenomenon, which relies upon spectral dependence of polarization planes of the guided modes. This feature was achieved in a specially designed side-hole fiber by combining linear birefringence induced by a pair of holes located in the cladding and the elliptical core tilted with respect to the symmetry plane of the holes. We performed numerical simulations of this design properties. The side-hole fiber with a tilted core was fabricated and experimentally studied. The orientation of the principal polarization planes of the fundamental modes varied by 14.5° in the analyzed spectral range. This value is in a good agreement with the simulation results.

RESUMEN

We studied vector frequency conversion in externally tuned microstructured fibers for applications as a novel, nonlinear fiber-optic sensor. We investigated both experimentally and numerically a possibility of shifting vector and scalar modulation instability gain bands by pressure-induced changes in the linear properties of a microstructured fiber. Our results show that polarization-dependent vector nonlinear processes sensitive to variation of fiber group velocity difference (group birefringence) exhibit a clear advantage for pressure-sensing applications compared with scalar nonlinear processes only sensitive to group velocity dispersion changes. Analytical predictions and numerical simulations confirm our measurement results.

RESUMEN

We have studied the effect of waveguide alignment on the reflection spectrum of Bragg gratings fabricated using a multiple order phase mask. We have demonstrated that splitting of certain Bragg peaks observed in earlier experiments reported in literature is caused by formation of the gratings with different periodicities in the waveguide tilted with respect to the phase mask plane due to the interference of non-symmetrical diffraction orders. Analytical expressions for spectral separation of the split peaks have been derived and verified against the experimental data recently presented in literature. The analytical predictions were also confirmed by numerical simulations of intensity distributions behind the multiple order diffraction grating and its projection on the tilted waveguide.

RESUMEN

We designed, manufactured and characterized two birefringent microstructured fibers that feature a 5-fold increase in polarimetric sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure compared to the earlier reported values for microstructured fibers. We demonstrate a good agreement between the finite element simulations and the experimental values for the polarimetric sensitivity to pressure and to temperature. The sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure has a negative sign and exceeds -43 rad/MPa x m at 1.55 microm for both fibers. In combination with the very low sensitivity to temperature, this makes our fibers the candidates of choice for the development of microstructured fiber based hydrostatic pressure measurement systems.
