[Oral cancer. Retrospective analysis of 118 cases]. / Carcinoma del cavo orale. Analisi retrospettiva su 118 casi clinici.

AIM: Oral carcinoma is a form of neoplasia with well-known clinical and morphologic features. This study presents the difference of incidence and behaviour in relation to the time of onset of oral carcinoma, and describes the experience made at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Second University of Naples. METHODS: In this study 118 patients are analysed. They are divided into 3 groups according to age: group A up to 40 years; group B, from 41 to 75 years; group C from 75 years onwards. RESULTS: No patient of group A showed a carcinoma of verrucous type. This histologic type was found in group B, (14 patients: 14,1%) and in group C (6 patients: 46,1%). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study underline the importance of the time of onset in the behaviour of oral carcinoma and the age of patients.

Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes strains involved in invasive and noninvasive listeriosis outbreaks by PCR-based fingerprinting techniques.

A total of 32 Listeria monocytogenes strains (16 from a recent outbreak of invasive listeriosis and 16 from two outbreaks of noninvasive listeriosis, all three occurring in Italy) were characterized by PCR-ribotyping, arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR), and the recently developed infrequent-restriction-site PCR (IRS-PCR). The discriminatory ability of the techniques, first evaluated on 29 unrelated L. monocytogenes food isolates using Simpson's index of diversity, was 0.714 for PCR-ribotyping, 0.690 for AP-PCR, and 0.919 for IRS-PCR. IRS-PCR was also more capable of distinguishing among strains from the invasive listeriosis outbreak: three different clusters were identified by IRS-PCR compared to two clusters identified by both PCR-ribotyping and AP-PCR. Within each of the two outbreaks of noninvasive listeriosis, the patterns were practically identical, as demonstrated by all three techniques. Only IRS-PCR succeeded in clearly discriminating the strains related to noninvasive listeriosis from all of the other strains included in this study, including those from the outbreak of invasive listeriosis. This finding may suggest the presence of unique differences in their DNA sequences.

[Malignant mesenchymal neoplasms of the oromaxillofacial area. The diagnostic problems]. / Neoplasie maligne mesenchimali del distretto oro-maxillo-facciale. Problematiche diagnostiche.

Oral and maxillo-facial mesenchymal malignant neoplasms are rare. They involve nosologic, diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Clinical cases of soft and bone tissue are reported. They share difficulties in clinical, roentgenographic and histopathological diagnosis and often the disagreement between the clinical evidence and the histopathological report. The rule of the immunohistochemistry for a correct characterization of mesenchymal malignant neoplasms and the necessity for correct and early diagnostic definition in order to plain the treatment are emphasized.

[The clinical and therapeutic approach in oromaxillofacial pain]. / Approccio clinico e terapeutico con il dolore a localizzazione oro-maxillo-facciale.

The general outlines and manifold aspects of oromaxillofacial pain are described on the basis of personal experience. Diagnostic difficulties are also outlined with emphasis on the basic features of symptomatic and essential forms. Finally the treatment protocol adopted is described with particular reference to symptomatic neoplastic forms.

The authors describe the therapeutic modalities for the care of epidermoid carcinoma of the buccal mucosa. Surgery and radiotherapy are equally effective in the early lesions, while for the advanced disease the therapy should always be combined.
