RESUMEN

There is no choice other than rehabilitation as a practical medical treatment to restore impairments or improve activities after acute treatment in people with spinal cord injury (SCI); however, the effect is unremarkable. Therefore, researchers have been seeking effective pharmacological treatments. These will, hopefully, exert a greater effect when combined with rehabilitation. However, no review has specifically summarized the combinatorial effects of rehabilitation with various medical agents. In the current review, which included 43 articles, we summarized the combinatorial effects according to the properties of the medical agents, namely neuromodulation, neurotrophic factors, counteraction to inhibitory factors, and others. The recovery processes promoted by rehabilitation include the regeneration of tracts, neuroprotection, scar tissue reorganization, plasticity of spinal circuits, microenvironmental change in the spinal cord, and enforcement of the musculoskeletal system, which are additive, complementary, or even synergistic with medication in many cases. However, there are some cases that lack interaction or even demonstrate competition between medication and rehabilitation. A large fraction of the combinatorial mechanisms remains to be elucidated, and very few studies have investigated complex combinations of these agents or targeted chronically injured spinal cords.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in various long-term sequelae, and chronically injured spinal cords exhibit a refractory feature, showing a limited response to cell transplantation therapies. To our knowledge, no preclinical studies have reported a treatment approach with results surpassing those of treatment comprising rehabilitation alone. In this study of rats with SCI, we propose a novel combined therapy involving a semaphorin 3A inhibitor (Sema3Ai), which enhances axonal regeneration, as the third treatment element in combination with neural stem/progenitor cell transplantation and rehabilitation. This comprehensive therapeutic strategy achieved significant improvements in host-derived neuronal and oligodendrocyte differentiation at the SCI epicenter and promoted axonal regeneration even in the chronically injured spinal cord. The elongated axons established functional electrical connections, contributing to significant enhancements in locomotor mobility when compared with animals treated with transplantation and rehabilitation. As a result, our combined transplantation, Sema3Ai, and rehabilitation treatment have the potential to serve as a critical step forward for chronic SCI patients, improving their ability to regain motor function.

Background: It is established that a low body mass index (BMI) correlates with a diminished home discharge rate and a decline in activities of daily living (ADL) capacity among elderly stroke patients. Nevertheless, there exists a paucity of knowledge regarding strategies to mitigate BMI reduction during the acute phase. This investigation seeks to elucidate the impact of rehabilitation dose, as determined by both physical and occupational therapy, on BMI alterations, positing that a heightened rehabilitation dose could thwart BMI decline. Methods: This retrospective, observational study was conducted in the stroke unit of a university hospital. Enrollees comprised individuals aged ≥65 years, hospitalized for stroke, and subsequently relocated to rehabilitation facilities between January 2019 and November 2020. The percentage change in BMI (%ΔBMI) was calculated based on BMI values at admission and discharge. Multivariate multiple regression analysis was employed to ascertain the influence of rehabilitation dose on %ΔBMI. Results: A total of 187 patients were included in the analysis, of whom 94% experienced a reduction in BMI during acute hospitalization. Following adjustment for sociodemographic and clinical factors, multivariable analyzes revealed a positive association between rehabilitation dose and %ΔBMI (ß = 0.338, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that, in the context of acute stroke treatment, an augmented rehabilitation dose is associated with a diminished decrease in BMI.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential use of artificial intelligence language models in formulating rehabilitation prescriptions and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) codes.  Design: Comparative study based on a single case report compared to standard answers from a textbook. SUBJECTS: A stroke case from textbook.  Methods: Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer-4 (ChatGPT-4)was used to generate comprehensive medical and rehabilitation prescription information and ICF codes pertaining to the stroke case. This information was compared with standard answers from textbook, and 2 licensed Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) clinicians reviewed the artificial intelligence recommendations for further discussion. RESULTS: ChatGPT-4 effectively formulated rehabilitation prescriptions and ICF codes for a typical stroke case, together with a rationale to support its recommendations. This information was generated in seconds. Compared with standard answers, the large language model generated broader and more general prescriptions in terms of medical problems and management plans, rehabilitation problems and management plans, as well as rehabilitation goals. It also demonstrated the ability to propose specified approaches for each rehabilitation therapy. The language model made an error regarding the ICF category for the stroke case, but no mistakes were identified in the ICF codes assigned.  Conclusion: This test case suggests that artificial intelligence language models have potential use in facilitating clinical practice and education in the field of rehabilitation medicine.

RESUMEN

Cell transplantation therapy using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural stem/progenitor cells (hiPSC-NS/PCs) has attracted attention as a regenerative therapy for spinal cord injury (SCI), and its efficacy in treating the subacute phase of SCI has been reported in numerous studies. However, few studies have focused on treatment in the chronic phase, which accounts for many patients, suggesting that there are factors that are difficult to overcome in the treatment of chronic SCI. The search for therapeutic strategies that focus on chronic SCI is fraught with challenges, and the combination of different therapies is thought to be the key to a solution. In addition, many issues remain to be addressed, including the investigation of therapeutic approaches for more severe injury models of chronic SCI and the acquisition of practical motor function. This review summarizes the current progress in regenerative therapy for SCI and discusses the prospects for regenerative medicine, particularly in animal models of chronic SCI.

Background The symptom for identification of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is dyspnea on exertion, with a concomitant decrease in exercise capacity. Even patients with hemodynamically improved PAH may have impaired exercise tolerance; however, the effect of central and peripheral factors on exercise tolerance remains unclear. We explored the factors contributing to exercise capacity and ventilatory efficiency in patients with hemodynamically normalized PAH after medical treatment. Methods and Results In total, 82 patients with PAH (age: median 46 [interquartile range, 39-51] years; male:female, 23:59) and mean pulmonary arterial pressure ≤30 mm Hg at rest were enrolled. The exercise capacity, indicated by the 6-minute walk distance and peak oxygen consumption, and the ventilatory efficiency, indicated by the minute ventilation versus carbon dioxide output slope, were assessed using cardiopulmonary exercise testing with a right heart catheter. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure was 21 (17-25) mm Hg, and the 6-minute walk distance was 530 (458-565) m, whereas the peak oxygen consumption was 18.8 (14.8-21.6) mLꞏmin-1ꞏkg-1. The multivariate model that best predicted 6-minute walk distance included peak arterial mixed venous oxygen content difference (ß=0.46, P<0.001), whereas the best peak oxygen consumption predictors included peak cardiac output (ß=0.72, P<0.001), peak arterial mixed venous oxygen content difference (ß=0.56, P<0.001), and resting mean pulmonary arterial pressure (ß=-0.25, P=0.026). The parameter that best predicted minute ventilation versus carbon dioxide output slope was the resting mean pulmonary arterial pressure (ß=0.35, P=0.041). Quadriceps muscle strength was moderately correlated with exercise capacity (6-minute walk distance; ρ=0.57, P<0.001; peak oxygen consumption: ρ=0.56, P<0.001) and weakly correlated with ventilatory efficiency (ρ=-0.32, P=0.007). Conclusions Central and peripheral factors are closely related to impaired exercise tolerance in patients with hemodynamically normalized PAH.

Cell transplantation therapy using human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural stem/progenitor cells (hiPSC-NS/PCs) is a new therapeutic strategy for spinal cord injury (SCI). Preclinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of hiPSC-NS/PCs transplantation in the subacute phase of SCI. However, locomotor recovery secondary to hiPSC-NS/PCs transplantation is limited in the chronic phase, suggesting that additional treatment, including rehabilitative training, is required to ensure recovery. The therapeutic potential of hiPSC-NS/PCs that qualify for clinical application is yet to be fully delineated. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of the combined therapy of clinical-grade hiPSC-NS/PCs transplantation and rehabilitative training that could produce synergistic effects in a rodent model of chronic SCI. Our findings indicated that rehabilitative training promoted the survival rate and neuronal differentiation of transplanted hiPSC-NS/PCs. The combination therapy was able to enhance the expressions of the BDNF and NT-3 proteins in the spinal cord tissue. Moreover, rehabilitation promoted neuronal activity and increased 5-HT-positive fibers at the lumbar enlargement. Consequently, the combination therapy significantly improved motor functions. The findings of this study suggest that the combined therapy of hiPSC-NS/PCs transplantation and rehabilitative training has the potential to promote functional recovery even when initiated during chronic SCI.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to locomotor dysfunction. Locomotor rehabilitation promotes the recovery of stepping ability in lower mammals, but it has limited efficacy in humans with a severe SCI. To explain this discrepancy between different species, a nonhuman primate rehabilitation model with a severe SCI would be useful. In this study, we developed a rehabilitation model of paraplegia caused by a severe traumatic SCI in a nonhuman primate, common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). The locomotor rating scale for marmosets was developed to accurately assess the recovery of locomotor functions in marmosets. All animals showed flaccid paralysis of the hindlimb after a thoracic contusive SCI, but the trained group showed significant locomotor recovery. Kinematic analysis revealed significantly improved hindlimb stepping patterns in trained marmosets. Furthermore, intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the motor cortex evoked the hindlimb muscles in the trained group, suggesting the reconnection between supraspinal input and the lumbosacral network. Because rehabilitation may be combined with regenerative interventions such as medicine or cell therapy, this primate model can be used as a preclinical test of therapies that can be used in human clinical trials.

Stem cell medicine has led to functional recovery in the acute-to-subacute phase of spinal cord injury (SCI), but not yet in the chronic phase, during which various molecular mechanisms drastically remodel the tissue and render it treatment-resistant. Researchers are attempting to identify effective combinatorial treatments that can overcome the refractory state of the chronically injured spinal cord. Regenerative rehabilitation, combinatorial treatment with regenerative medicine that aims to elicit synergistic effects, is being developed. Rehabilitation upon SCI in preclinical studies has recently attracted more attention because it is safe, induces neuronal plasticity involving transplanted stem cells and sensorimotor circuits, and is routinely implemented in human clinics. However, regenerative rehabilitation has not been extensively reviewed, and only a few reviews have focused on the use of physical medicine modalities for rehabilitative purposes, which might be more important in the chronic phase. Here, we summarize regenerative rehabilitation studies according to the effector, site, and mechanism. Specifically, we describe effects on transplanted cells, microstructures at and distant from the lesion, and molecular changes. To establish a treatment regimen that induces robust functional recovery upon chronic SCI, further investigations are required of combinatorial treatments incorporating stem cell therapy, regenerative rehabilitation, and medication.

Body weight-supported treadmill training with the voluntary driven exoskeleton (VDE-BWSTT) has been shown to improve the gait function of patients with chronic spinal cord injury. However, little is known whether VDE-BWSTT can effectively improve the trunk function of patients with chronic spinal cord injury. In this open-label, single-arm study, nine patients with chronic spinal cord injury at the cervical or thoracic level (six males and three females, aged 37.8 ± 15.6 years, and time since injury 51.1 ± 31.8 months) who underwent outpatient VDE-BWSTT training program at Keio University Hospital, Japan from September 2017 to March 2019 were included. All patients underwent twenty 60-minute gait training sessions using VDE. Trunk muscular strength, i.e., the maximum force against which patient could maintain a sitting posture without any support, was evaluated in four directions: anterior, posterior, and lateral (right and left) after 10 and 20 training sessions. After intervention, lateral muscular strength significantly improved. In addition, a significant positive correlation was detected between the change in lateral trunk muscular strength after 20 training sessions relative to baseline and gait speed. The change in trunk muscular strength after 20 training sessions relative to baseline was greatly correlated with patient age. This suggests that older adult patients with chronic spinal cord injury achieved a greater improvement in trunk muscle strength following VDE-BWSTT. All these findings suggest that VDE-BWSTT can improve the trunk function of patients with chronic spinal cord injury and the effect might be greater in older adult patients. The study was approved by the Keio University of Medicine Ethics Committee (IRB No. 20150355-3) on September 26, 2017.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in activities of daily living (ADLs) and the conditions of rehabilitation for acute COVID-19 patients in Japan. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational survey. SETTING: Four tertiary hospitals with intensive care units and one secondary hospital in Japan. PARTICIPANTS: COVID-19 patients (N=478) admitted to 5 hospitals INTERVENTIONS: : Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Walking ability and swallowing status were assessed using the FIM locomotion item and Food Intake Scale at admission and discharge. The physiatrists of each hospital were also surveyed regarding the factors that influenced decisions to provide rehabilitation. RESULTS: Excluding patients who died, the proportion of critical patients who could walk independently at discharge was 63%, and the proportion of those who were able to take 3 meals orally at discharge was 90%. Rehabilitation was provided to 13.4% of all patients and to 58.3% of patients with critical symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: After COVID-19 treatment, patients, especially those with critical symptoms, still have functional disabilities related to walking and swallowing. It is possible that sufficient rehabilitation could not be provided during the period studied.

Stem cell-based regenerative therapy has opened an avenue for functional recovery of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Regenerative rehabilitation is attracting wide attention owing to its synergistic effects, feasibility, non-invasiveness, and diverse and systemic properties. In this review article, we summarize the features of rehabilitation, describe the mechanism of combinatorial treatment, and discuss regenerative rehabilitation in the context of SCI. Although conventional rehabilitative methods have commonly been implemented alone, especially in studies of acute-to-subacute SCI, the combinatorial effects of intensive and advanced methods, including various neurorehabilitative approaches, have also been reported. Separating the concept of combined rehabilitation from regenerative rehabilitation, we suggest that the main roles of regenerative rehabilitation can be categorized as conditioning/reconditioning, functional training, and physical exercise, all of which are indispensable for enhancing functional recovery achieved using stem cell therapies.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether body weight-supported treadmill training with voluntary-driven exoskeleton body weight-supported treadmill training (VDE-BWSTT) improves the quality of life (QOL) of persons with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). Nineteen individuals with chronic SCI with walking limitation underwent a total of 20 sessions of VDE-BWSTT using the hybrid assistant limb. The QOL was measured using the Short Form-36v2 (SF-36v2) questionnaire at preintervention and postintervention. The Walking Index for SCI-II (WISCI-II), Functional Independence Measure (FIM) motor score, and Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI) self-questionnaire were also administered/completed. In SF-36v2, the mean values of all subscales in our participants were lower than those in healthy individuals. None of the measures showed significant improvement, even in individuals with some residual walking ability (baseline WISCI-II score of 6 or higher). In the correlation analysis between the baselines WISCI-II, FIM, or NPSI values and the mean SF-36v2 subscale changes throughout the training, the baseline FIM motor score was positively correlated with the mean changes in Role Emotional and Mental Health. In addition, NPSI was negatively correlated with the mean change in Vitality and Mental Health. In our protocol, although VDE-BWSTT did not improve the QOL of persons with chronic SCI, those with higher functional independence or lower pain at preintervention likely improved. Further study with combination of task-specific training or pain-targeting treatment with more patients should be considered to more effectively improve their QOL.

Rehabilitative treatment, including treadmill training, is considered an important strategy for restoring motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, many unexplained problems persist regarding the appropriate rehabilitative method and the mechanism underlying the beneficial effects of rehabilitation. Moreover, only a few preclinical studies have been performed on rehabilitative interventions for chronic SCI, although most patients have chronic injuries. In fact, several preclinical studies reported that rehabilitative training was less effective when applied during the chronic phase than when applied sooner. While numerous studies have examined the effects of treadmill training during the subacute phase, the training conditions vary considerably among preclinical reports. Therefore, establishing a standard training protocol is essential for achieving beneficial rehabilitation effects at the chronic stage. Since the difficulty of applying an appropriate training load hinders training at constant speeds, it is important to adjust the training intensity in accordance with the exercise tolerance of an individual animal to provide further functional recovery benefits. Here, we created a novel quadrupedal treadmill training protocol based on the overload principle for mice with incomplete thoracic SCI. We subjected SCI model mice to rehabilitative training according to the protocol for two consecutive weeks starting at 42 days after injury. We examined the treadmill speeds at which the mice were able to run based on the severity of paresis and investigated the impact of the protocol on functional recovery. Assessment of running speed changes during the treadmill training period revealed faster treadmill speeds for mice with mild paresis than for those with severe paresis. The training parameters, including the speed and distance traveled, were positively correlated with the changes in motor function. These results suggest that the most suitable running speed during treadmill training differs according to the level of motor dysfunction and that running longer distances has a positive impact on motor functional recovery. Based on this established protocol, we compared functional and histological results between the chronic SCI groups with and without rehabilitation. The gait analyses showed significantly better functional improvement in the rehabilitation group than in the nonrehabilitation group. Histological analyses revealed that the BDNF- and VGLUT1-positive areas of lumbar enlargement were significantly increased in the rehabilitation group. These findings implied that rehabilitation promoted not only motor performance but also motor control, including forelimb-hindlimb coordination, even in chronic SCI, resulting in functional improvement by treadmill training alone. Therefore, rehabilitative training based on the overload principle appears to be one of the appropriate treatment options for incomplete thoracic SCI, and evidence of its efficacy exists in actual clinical settings.

AIMS: The present study aimed to determine factors associated with the frequency of paralyzed upper extremity (UE) use in chronic stroke patients with severe UE functional deficiency. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 138 consecutive patients, and 117 was analyzed (median age, 55 [range, 18-85] years; median stroke duration, 24.5 [range, 7-302] months) with chronic hemiparetic stroke who were admitted to our hospital for intensive upper extremity rehabilitation. The mean Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) UE score was 28.6. All of them are independent in their activity of daily living (ADL) and without remarkable cognitive deficits. Amount-of-use score of Motor Activity Log-14 (MAL-AOU) was applied as the index of daily use of affected UE. The following parameters were examined as the explanatory variables: demographics, proximal and distal sub-scores of FMA UE, Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), and sensory function scores in the Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS). RESULTS: The median MAL-AOU score was 0.57 [range, 0.28-0.80]. Ordinal regression analysis revealed that FMA proximal, FMA distal, and SIAS sensory function (touch) were associated with AOU score of MAL-14 (Pseudo R-square = 0.460). CONCLUSION: Not only motor but also sensory function, especially tactile sensation, play a crucial role in the daily use of affected UE in chronic stroke patients with severe UE hemiparesis.

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure (BP) dysregulation is frequently observed in patients after surgical management of brainstem lesions; however, there has been no standard rehabilitation. Considering the conflicting risks for hypoperfusion and disuse syndrome in these patients, a safe and effective rehabilitative strategy is warranted. OBSERVATIONS: A 50-year-old man who had undergone craniotomy for resection of a recurrent dorsal medullary epidermoid cyst developed persistent orthostatic hypotension. It was resistant to physical exercise, pharmacological therapy, abdominal binders, and compression stockings; therefore, it inhibited postoperative rehabilitation. Although the responsible lesion was not clearly visible on the postoperative image, accompanying symptoms, including segmental sensory impairment, implied an improvement in BP control. Although there was a trade-off between the risk of developing disuse syndrome and a delay in functional recovery, the authors decided to continue a conservative rehabilitation strategy rather than increasing the workload. The patient's BP control was gradually restored by the seventh postoperative week, and the authors proceeded with basic activity training. LESSONS: A conservative prognostic prediction-based rehabilitation strategy was applied in this case. The precise evaluation of the accompanying neurological symptoms was helpful in deciding the treatment regimen. The conflicting risks for hypoperfusion and disuse syndrome in such cases must be considered.

Orthoses and insoles are among the primary treatments and prevention methods of refractory plantar ulcers in patients with Hansen's disease. While dynamic plantar pressure and tactile sensory disturbance are the critical pathological factors, few studies have investigated whether a relationship exists between these two factors. In this study, dynamic pressure measured using F-scan system and tactile sensory threshold evaluated with monofilament testing were determined for 12 areas of 20 feet in patients with chronic Hansen's disease. The correlation between these two factors was calculated for each foot, for each clinical category of the foot (0-IV) and across all feet. A significant correlation was found between dynamic pressure and tactile sensation in Category II feet (n = 8, p = 0.016, r2 = 0.246, Spearman's rank test). In contrast, no significant correlation was detected for the entire foot or within the subgroups for the remainder of the clinical categories. However, the clinical manifestation of lesion areas showed high variability: (1) pressure concentrated, sensation lost; (2) margin of pressure concentration, sensation lost; (3) pressure concentrated, sensation severely disturbed but not lost; and (4) tip of the toe. These results may indicate that, even though there was a weak relationship between dynamic pressure and tactile sensation, it is important to assess both, in addition to the basics of orthotic treatment in patients with Hansen's disease presenting with refractory plantar ulceration.

BACKGROUND: Recording electroencephalography (EEG) from the targeted cortex immediately before and after focal transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) remains a challenge. METHODS: We introduce a hybrid stimulation-recording approach where a single EEG electrode is inserted into the inner electrode of a double-ring montage for focal TES. The new combined electrode was placed at the C3 position of the EEG 10-20 system. Neuronal activity was recorded in two volunteers before and after 20 Hz alternating-current TES at peak-to-peak intensities of 1 and 2 mA. TES-induced electric field distributions were simulated with SIMNIBS software. RESULTS: Using the hybrid stimulation-recording set-up, EEG activity was successfully recorded directly before and after TES. Simulations revealed comparable electrical fields in the stimulated cortex for the pseudomonopolar montage with and without embedded EEG electrode. CONCLUSION: The hybrid TES-EEG approach can be used to probe after-effects of focal TES on neuronal activity in the targeted cortex.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory function has been frequently overlooked in clinics and research in the field of chronic stroke. The effects of neurorehabilitation interventions on sensory processing have still to be investigated using electrophysiological means.This study investigated the effect of hybrid assistive neuromuscular dynamic stimulation (HANDS) therapy utilizing closed-loop electromyography-controlled neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), on sensory changes and cortical plasticity among patients with chronic stroke. METHODS: This study was a prespecified analysis of 23 participants involved in an ongoing large interventional study. Patients with severe upper limb hemiplegia dues to chronic stroke underwent 3 weeks of inpatient HANDS therapy, where daily treatment consisted of 8 h of NMES combined with wrist splinting, 90 min of comprehensive occupational therapy, and the practice of bimanual activities of daily living. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and functional sensory assessments, including the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test (SWMT) and thumb localizing test (TLT), were compared pre and post-treatment. RESULTS: While no significant recovery of tactile sensation was observed, significant improvements in proprioception and motor function were induced. The number of cortical peaks significantly increased in the median nerve, but not in the tibial nerve. A total of 9 out of 11 participants who initially lacked certain peaks responded to treatment. Further analysis revealed a significant improvement in latency and amplitude of SEP peaks. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that NMES-based neurorehabilitation induces certain plastic changes in the primary sensory cortex and in cortices associated with sensorimotor processing in people with chronic stroke sequelae, which may explain the observed improvements in proprioception.

OBJECTIVE: There are a lack of disaster preparedness measures that target populations with dysphagia. In particular, disaster response plans frequently overlook differences in textures between emergency foods and regularly consumed foods. The aim of this study was to estimate the number of community-dwelling elderly care recipients requiring specific food preparations, including the population at risk of aspiration when solely consuming common emergency foods. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. PATIENTS: Community-dwelling elderly care recipients who were certified by the public long-term care insurance system in Japan and registered at one of 77 care managing offices in Shinjuku city. METHODS: Special needs regarding food intake and risks associated with receiving emergency foods were assessed by government-certified care managers. RESULTS: Data were acquired from 1,271 care recipients. Notably, 23.1% of the sampled population had special needs regarding food intake at all times (e.g. non-oral intake or need for texture-modified foods). An additional 11.5% were estimated to experience difficulty when ingesting common emergency foods, despite the ability to consume regular foods. CONCLUSION: A relatively large portion of community-dwelling elderly people will be at risk of aspiration due to the intake of commonly distributed emergency foods following a disaster. Appropriate preparation based on an assessment of special needs regarding food intake is therefore required when planning for future disasters.
