RESUMEN

CONTEXT: The success of endodontic therapy depends on proper biomechanical preparation and obturation. AIM: To evaluate and compare the pushout bond strength (POBS) of MTA Fillapex (MF) and BioRoot RCS (BRCS) sealers in endodontically treated teeth with different irrigants-5.25% Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 0.2% Chitosan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 60 premolars were divided into three groups. Each group was then subdivided into A and B. The three groups were Group 1A: 17% EDTA + 5.25% NaOCl with MF sealer (n = 10); Group 1B: 17% EDTA + 5.25% NaOCl with BRCS sealer (n = 10); Group 2A: 0.2% Chitosan + 5.25% NaOCl with MF sealer (n = 10); Group 2B: 0.2% Chitosan + 5.25%NaOCl with BRCS sealer (n = 10); Group 3A: 5.25% NaOCl + MF sealer (n = 10); and Group 3B: 5.25% NaOCl + BRCS sealer (n = 10). After obturation, they were sectioned horizontally (1.5 mm thick). The POBS was studied using a universal testing machine (Autograph AG-1). The sample size was calculated using the statistical package G * Power (3.1.5). RESULTS: It was found that the POBS of BRCS was higher when the root canal was irrigated with 0.2% Chitosan + 5.25% NaOCl. Thus, Group 2B showed significantly higher POBS than Group 2A. CONCLUSION: The irrigation regimen of Chitosan with NaOCl was found to have better debriding effect on the root canal. Of the two sealers, BRCS showed the higher bond strength values than MF.

RESUMEN

AIM: To determine the antimicrobial effect of water extracts of leaves of Annona muricata and Simarouba glauca on Enterococcus faecalis using agar diffusion method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dried leaves of A. muricata and S. glauca were powdered and extracted in a soxhlet apparatus. Enterococcus faecalis was grown overnight in Trypticase soy agar plates. About 10 µl of each extract was placed on agar plates and incubated overnight. The zone of inhibition was measured after 24 hours. About 1% sodium hypochlorite and distilled water were used as positive and negative controls. RESULTS: The leaf extract of A. muricata showed similar effectiveness as that of sodium hypochlorite, whereas the leaf extract of S. glauca showed only a slight reduction in growth of E. faecalis. CONCLUSION: Leaf extract of A. muricata can be developed as an alternative to sodium hypochlorite for root canal irrigants. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Success of endodontic treatment depends on complete disinfection of the root canals. Root canal irrigants have a major role in complete disinfection of the root canals. Chemical root canal irrigants are more or less toxic to the oral environment. In this study, naturally derived leaf extracts of A. muricata and S. glauca are compared with sodium hypochlorite for its effectiveness against E. faecalis - the most common pathogen found in the root canals.

RESUMEN

Unusual anatomical configurations must be considered in the radiographic and clinical evaluation during the endodontic treatment. The canal anatomy maxillary first and second premolar has been studied extensively and the presence of three canals is relatively rare especially in the maxillary second premolar. The occurrence of three canals with separate foramina in both the first and second premolar is shown to be in extremely low percentages and has been documented as practically non-existent in Asian populations. This article describes a case of a maxillary first and second premolar with three canals each.
