RESUMEN

The authors review 216 gastrectomies of Péan type for gastric or duodenal ulcer with a follow up of between one and 12 years. In 91 patients, the follow up was more than five years. Six criteria were adopted for the essessment of the functional results: increase in body weight which may be of several types, the diet, post-prandial symptoms, return to work, asthenia recurrent ulcer. Each of these criteria were studied separately in all operated patients and analysed in relation to the follow up period. Except for recurrent ulcer, with occurred in 2% of cases, the results obtained improved with time. A routine study such as Visick's method completes this presentation. The good and very good results were 81% at 5 years, average results were 16% and poor results 3%. The differences between gastric and duodenal ulcer were negligeable. After comparison with the data in the literature, this level study seemed more interesting than a statistical study.

RESUMEN

62 reoperations were performed in 54 patients for failure of surgery for chronic ulcer. In 15 cases there was a recurrence of an ulcer left in position, in 32 cases there was an anastomotic ulcer, in 4 cases, severe hemorrhage for severe inflammation of the stoma without recurrence of the ulcer and in 11 cases, there were severe functional disorders. The authors are convinced that in the treatment of recurrent ulcer, vagotomy should always complete gastrectomy and vice versa. It is because they did not follow this advice in the early stages that they had to reoperate certain patients several times for new ulcer recurrences. The results of reoperation for functional disorders when indicated in a gastrectomised patient were mediocre in the vagotomised patients.

RESUMEN

560 patients with primary broncho-pulmonary carcinoma underwent surgery, excision being possible in 78 p. cent. Overall post-operative survival is 29 p. cent at 5 years and 11.5 p. cent at ten years. Among the various prognostic factors, lymph node involvement is the most important. In the most favourable cases, survival at 5 years is 46 p. cent. Such a result shows that the prognosis in primary carcinoma of the lung is not as grim as it is usually said to be.
