RESUMEN

Trained dogs can recognize the volatile organic compounds contained in biological samples of patients with COVID-19 infection. We assessed the sensitivity and specificity of in vivo SARS-CoV-2 screening by trained dogs. We recruited five dog-handler dyads. In the operant conditioning phase, the dogs were taught to distinguish between positive and negative sweat samples collected from volunteers' underarms in polymeric tubes. The conditioning was validated by tests involving 16 positive and 48 negative samples held or worn in such a way that the samples were invisible to the dog and handler. In the screening phase the dogs were led by their handlers to a drive-through facility for in vivo screening of volunteers who had just received a nasopharyngeal swab from nursing staff. Each volunteer who had already swabbed was subsequently tested by two dogs, whose responses were recorded as positive, negative, or inconclusive. The dogs' behavior was constantly monitored for attentiveness and wellbeing. All the dogs passed the conditioning phase, their responses showing a sensitivity of 83-100% and a specificity of 94-100%. The in vivo screening phase involved 1251 subjects, of whom 205 had a COVID-19 positive swab and two dogs per each subject to be screened. Screening sensitivity and specificity were respectively 91.6-97.6% and 96.3-100% when only one dog was involved, whereas combined screening by two dogs provided a higher sensitivity. Dog wellbeing was also analyzed: monitoring of stress and fatigue suggested that the screening activity did not adversely impact the dogs' wellbeing. This work, by screening a large number of subjects, strengthen recent findings that trained dogs can discriminate between COVID-19 infected and healthy human subjects and introduce two novel research aspects: i) assessement of signs of fatigue and stress in dogs during training and testing, and ii) combining screening by two dogs to improve detection sensitivity and specificity. Using some precautions to reduce the risk of infection and spillover, in vivo COVID-19 screening by a dog-handler dyad can be suitable to quickly screen large numbers of people: it is rapid, non-invasive and economical, since it does not involve actual sampling, lab resources or waste management, and is suitable to screen large numbers of people.

Nowadays, radiative coolers are extensively investigated for the thermal management of solar cells with the aim of improving their performance and lifetime. Current solutions rely on meta-materials with scarce elements or complex fabrication processes, or organic polymers possibly affected by UV degradation. Here, the potential of innovative cement-based solutions as a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative is reported. By combining chemical kinetics, molecular mechanics and electromagnetic simulations, it is shown that the most common cements, i.e., Portland cements, can be equipped with excellent radiative cooling properties, which might enable a reduction of the operating temperature of solar cells by up to 20 K, with outstanding efficiency and lifetime gains. This study represents a first step toward the realization of a novel class of energy-efficient, economically viable and robust radiative coolers, based on cheap and available cementitious materials.

Plasmonic organic hybrid electro/optic modulators are among the most innovative light modulators fully compatible with the silicon photonics platform. In this context, modeling is instrumental to both computer-aided optimization and interpretation of experimental data. Due to the large computational resources required, modeling is usually limited to waveguide simulations. The first aim of this work to investigate an improved, physics-based description of the voltage-dependent electro/optic effect, leading to a multiphysics-augmented model of the modulator cross-section. Targeting the accuracy of full-wave, 3D modeling with moderate computational resources, the paper presents a novel mixed modal-FDTD simulation strategy that allows us to drastically reduce the number and complexity of 3D-FDTD simulations needed to accurately evaluate the modulator response. This framework is demonstrated on a device inspired by the literature.

We present three-dimensional simulations of HgCdTe-based focal plane arrays (FPAs) with two-color and dual-band sequential infrared pixels having realistic truncated-pyramid shape, taking into account also the presence of compositionally graded transition layers. After a validation against the spectral responsivity of two-color, mid-wavelength infrared detectors from the literature, the method is employed for a simulation campaign on dual-band, mid-, and long-wavelength infrared FPAs illuminated by a Gaussian beam. Simulation results underscore the importance of a full-wave approach to the electromagnetic problem, since multiple internal reflections due to metallizations and slanted sidewalls produce non-negligible features in the quantum efficiency spectra, especially in the long-wavelength band. Evaluations of the optical and diffusive contribution to inter-pixel crosstalk indicate the effectiveness of deep trenches to prevent diffusive crosstalk in both wavebands. In its present form, the detector seems to be subject to significant optical crosstalk in the long-wavelength infrared band, which could be addressed through pixel shape optimization.

PURPOSE: From May 2015 to March 2016, an outbreak due to Listeria monocytogenes serotype 1/2a and clinical pulsotype never previously isolated in Europe occurred in central Italy, involving 24 confirmed clinical cases. The article provides a description of the outbreak and the investigation carried out by a multidisciplinary network. METHODOLOGY: Epidemiological and microbiological surveillance was conducted to confirm the outbreak and to detect the food vehicle of infection. The origin and destination of the implicated food and its ingredients were investigated by tracing-back and -forward investigation. RESULTS: Next-generation sequencing confirmed the unique outbreak strain. On 4 January 2016, a L. monocytogenes strain with pulsotype indistinguishable from that isolated from clinical cases in the outbreak was detected in a sample of hog head cheese purchased from a retail supermarket by one of the patients. The hog head cheese was produced by a small meat processing plant in the Marche region, where microbiological investigation confirmed environmental and food contamination by the outbreak strain. Plant production was suspended and all contaminated batches of the hog head cheese were withdrawn from the market by 19 February by local health authority. We subsequently observed a sharp decline in clinical cases, the last being reported on 11 March 2016. CONCLUSION: The key factor in the timely conclusion of this investigation was intersectoral collaboration among epidemiologists, microbiologists, veterinarians, statisticians and health and food safety authorities at national, regional and local levels.
