Differentiation of Salmonella vaccinated and infected animals by serological detection of antibody to T3SS effector SsaK in an indirect ELISA.

The differentiation of animals that are vaccinated and those that are naturally infected with Salmonella is difficult by conventional serological tests. We have shown here an indirect Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of Salmonella infection based on the presence of a Type III secretory effector SsaK in the sera.

A case report on disseminated Rhodococcus equi infection in a Japanese black heifer.

Rhodococcus equi was isolated from the granulomatous lesions of the lung, kidney, liver, and hepatic, mesenteric, and abomasum lymph nodes of a Japanese black heifer. R. equi isolates were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction for virulence-associated protein genes. The vapN gene was detected in all the isolates examined. This is the first report in which vapN-positive R. equi was isolated from cattle in Japan.
