RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the appearance and frequencies of the Booroola polymorphism of the bone morphogenetic protein receptor 1b (BMPR1B) gene (FecB) and the Embrapa polymorphism of the growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) gene (FecGE) in sheep in Thailand. A total of 454 crossbred sheep blood samples were collected from four provinces in Thailand during August 2022 to July 2023. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to identify the FecB and FecGE genotypes. The history of ewe birth types was collected from the owners to analyze the association between fecundity (Fec) genotypes and the history of birth types. The genotypic frequencies of FecB for homozygous genotype (B/B), heterozygous genotype (+/B), and wildtype (+/+) were 0.22%, 1.54%, and 98.24%, respectively. Meanwhile, the genotypic frequencies of FecGE for homozygous genotype (E/E), heterozygous genotype (+/E), and wildtype (+/+) were 0.00%, 2.42%, and 97.58%, respectively. Furthermore, three ewes exhibited both FecB and FecGE genotypes. Fisher's exact test revealed that possession of the FecB genotype was associated with multiple births (p < 0.01). Both FecB and FecGE mutations were identified in crossbred sheep in Thailand. Sheep containing FecB allele could be alternative candidates to be selected to improve the prolificacy of crossbred sheep in Thailand.

Since Asian sea bass is one of the economically most important fish, aquaculture conditions are constantly optimized. Evidence from feeding studies combined with the current understanding of the importance of zinc for growth and immune defense suggest that zinc supplementation may be a possible approach to optimize aquacultures of Asian sea bass. To investigate the effects of zinc deficiency and zinc supplementation, cells from Asian sea bass were incubated in culture medium with different zinc contents. The expression of genes, important for zinc homeostasis, redox metabolism, and growth hormones was analyzed using RT-PCR. Zinc deficiency induced the expression of certain zinc transporters (ZIP14, ZIP10, ZIP6, ZIP4, ZnT4, ZnT9) as well as of SOD1, IGF I and IGF II, while expression of ZnT1 and metallothionein (MT) was reduced. Zinc supplementation decreased the expression of ZIP10, while expression of ZnT1 and MT were elevated. No differences in the effects of zinc supplementation with zinc sulfate compared to supplementation with zinc amino acid complexes were observed. Thus, extracellular zinc conditions may govern the cellular zinc homeostasis, the redox metabolism and growth hormone expression in cells from Asian sea bass as reported for other fish species. Our data indicate that supplementing aquacultures with zinc may be recommended to avoid detriments of zinc deficiency.

RESUMEN

It is documented that the reproductive performance of postpartum dairy cows is influenced by both internal and external factors. One of the most important reproductive performance indices is the first ovulation postpartum. This review aimed to describe factors affecting first ovulation postpartum in dairy cows, particularly those raised under tropical climates. Negative energy balance and its consequences; metabolic disorders; uterine pathology; udder health; lameness; and heat stress are discussed for their potential effects on the first ovulation postpartum. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of those affecting factors would assist in justifying the treatment and prevention plans in order to optimize the reproductive performance of postpartum dairy cows.

To consider diet optimization for the growth and health of fish under intensive aquaculture systems, with a focus on the farming of Nile tilapia and red tilapia in Thailand, we conducted an experiment based on a completely randomized design (CRD), with three treatments and four replicates. Three diets, supplemented with different trace minerals, were applied to selected groups of fish: (a) a control diet, without organic trace minerals supplementation; (b) a T1 diet of chromium-L-methionine at 500 ppb, in combination with a zinc amino acid complex at 60 parts per million (ppm); and (c) a T2 diet of chromium-L-methionine at 500 ppb in combination with selenomethionine at 300 ppb. Red tilapia with an initial mean weight of 190 ± 12 g/fish were randomly distributed into cages of 2 × 2 × 2.5 m in a freshwater pond (12 cages in total), with 34 fish per cage and a density of 17 fish/m3. During the 8 week feeding trial, the fish were fed 3−4% of their body weight twice a day. The fish were weighed, then blood samples were collected to study their immune responses. The intestines were collected, measured, and analyzed at the end of the feeding trial. The results showed that the red tilapia that were fed with diets of chromium-L-methionine in combination with a zinc amino acid complex in the T1 treatment had significantly (p < 0.05) higher final weights, weight gains, average daily gains (ADGs), and better feed conversion ratios (FCRs), compared with fish that were fed with the control diet without organic trace minerals and with fish that were fed with the T2 diet (p < 0.05). The midgut and hindgut villus heights of the group fed with chromium-L-methionine in combination with a zinc amino acid complex in the T1 treatment were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.05). The levels of the antioxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lysozyme activity were not significantly different from those of fish that were fed with the control diet (p > 0.05), whereas the glutathione level tended to increase (p < 0.1) in fish that were fed with chromium-L-methionine in combination with selenomethionine in the T2 treatment. Therefore, we concluded that chromium-L-methionine in combination with a zinc amino acid complex or selenomethionine clearly enhanced red tilapia's growth performance and feed utilization through the promotion of antioxidative enzyme activity and immune response.

Effects of body condition score (BCS) at far-off dry period on blood biochemistry, liver triacylglycerol, and muscular monocarboxylate transporter-1 mRNA expression in tropical Holstein dairy cows during peripartum period were studied. Eight dry cows were divided into two groups of four cows based on their BCS at 8 weeks prepartum: high BCS (HBS) and low BCS (LBS). Blood samples were collected weekly from 8 weeks before expected calving date until 8 weeks postpartum for determination of serum glucose, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), and ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA). Muscle and liver samples were biopsied at 2 weeks before expected calving date and at 2 weeks postpartum for determination of muscular monocarboxylate transporter-1 (MCT-1) mRNA expression and liver triacylglycerol concentrations. Decreased BCS and elevated serum NEFA and BHBA indicated that LBS cows entered to the NEB period earlier than did HBS cows. LBS cows showed lower liver TAG and higher muscular MCT-1 mRNA expression than did HBS cows. The MCT-1 mRNA expression at 2 weeks prepartum was negatively correlated with BCSs at 2-3 weeks prepartum and at 1-2 weeks postpartum. In conclusion, LBS cows most likely adapted to NEB by upregulation of muscular MCT-1 expression and had lower NEB consequences during postpartum period.

This review attempted to explain factors associated with negative energy balance (NEB) occurring during the periparturient period in dairy cows raised under tropical climatic conditions. The NEB has long been proven as an inevitable event in periparturient dairy cows. This condition had negative effects on the overall performances of dairy cows, including milk production, reproduction, and health condition. Therefore, periparturient management to overcome the NEB problem is vital for optimizing profit in dairy farming. In most tropical countries such as Thailand, dairy cows have been predominantly kept by small-holder farmers. Consequently, baseline milk yields, feed availability, feeding management, and general farming practices are different from typical commercial dairy farming. Heat stress also plays a crucial role in NEB conditions, and elevated temperature-humidity indexes above-normal conditions are recorded throughout the year. These factors influence the NEB in tropical dairy cows, which could result in different outcomes and consequences. Understanding the affecting components of NEB in dairy cows would help alleviate the severity of the NEB and its consequences, optimizing the dairy cow's performance.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Data about dynamics of serum biochemical parameters and negative energy balance (NEB) related conditions differ among geographical areas or farm types. It should be cautious about applying those data to justify control and prevention strategies of NEB problems. Therefore, dynamics of blood biochemical parameters related to NEB condition of peripartum dairy cows raised in either smallholder (SH) or semi-commercial (SC) farms were studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two healthy pregnant dry cows were selected from five dairy farms in Western part of Thailand, including 15 and 17 cows from three SH and two SC farms, respectively. Blood samples were collected at 2 weeks before the expected calving date, and 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks postpartum to determine concentrations of glucose, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), and b-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA). Body condition scores (BCSs) and milk yields were also recorded. RESULTS: Dairy cows in both farm types suffered from NEB by elevation of serum NEFA and BHBA, and loss of BCS postpartum. Degrees of elevation in serum NEFA and BHBA were different between farm types. The SC cows showed more BCS loss postpartum, but lower serum NEFA. In the SH cows, even with less BCS loss, the cows showed high serum NEFA concentrations. CONCLUSION: Dairy cows in our study entered NEB condition even with low milk yields. Moreover, elevation of serum NEFA and BHBA postpartum was higher in our studied cows as compared with other studies in high producing cows of commercial dairy farms in temperate areas.
