RESUMEN

Lethal cardiac complications leading to death and various arrhythmias have been reported after organophosphate and/or carbamate poisonings. The present study focuses on the long-term effects of repeated low-level exposure to diazinon, propoxur, and chlorpyrifos (CPF) on cardiac function in rabbits. The yearly based experimental scheme of exposure consisted of two oral administration periods, lasting 3 months and 1 month each, interrupted by an 8-month washout period (total duration 12 months). At the end of the experimental scheme, the rabbits underwent an echocardiographic evaluation under sedation, after which they were killed and the tissue and serum samples were collected. A mild localized cardiotoxic effect was established by echocardiography for the three pesticides tested. Severe histological alterations were identified, especially in the diazinon-treated animals in agreement with increased persistence of this pesticide established in the cardiac tissue. In addition, all pesticides tested increased the oxidative stress and oxidative modifications in the genomic DNA content of the cardiac tissues, each one following a distinct mechanism.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the possible involvement of human papillomavirus and Epstein-Barr virus in esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) carcinogenesis in the Greek population. DNA was extracted from 30 ESCC and 27 normal esophageal specimens and screened for HPV type-specific or EBV infection by PCR-based assay. Seventeen out of 30 ESCC specimens (56%) were found positive for HPV DNA, of which 15 (88%) were typed as HPV-18 infected, one (5.9%) as HPV-16 infected, and one (5.9%) as infected by an HPV type different from the studied HPV-6, 11, 16, 18 and 33 subtypes. Six of the 27 normal esophageal specimens (22.2%) were positive for HPV infection, five typed as HPV-18 (83.3%) and one as HPV-16 (16.7%). All samples were negative for EBV genome detection as assessed by the PCR assay. No statistically significant correlation was found between the HPV status of the tumor samples and clinical parameters including sex, age of the patients, tobacco or alcohol use, differentiation grade of the lesions and stage of the disease. In conclusion, our findings indicate a statistically significant (p<0.001) overall association between ESCC and HPV infection, mostly related to the HPV-18 subtype, in the Greek population.

RESUMEN

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare disease associated with mild, nonspecific abdominal symptoms and a wide spectrum of imaging findings, with thickened mesentery and peritoneum being the most common ones. A case of a malignant peritoneal mesothelioma presenting with manifestations of pulmonary disease is reported. Imaging evaluation revealed pleural, lung and pericardial involvement together with retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy, little ascites and extensive omental, but only subtle, mesenteric thickening.

RESUMEN

Fifteen patients with primary thyroid non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (PT-NHLs) living in the island of Crete were studied. Patients' median age was 69 years, male/female ratio 1.5/1 and stage I/stage II ratio 2/1 (stages III and IV were excluded). According to the Working Formulation Classification, 2 cases were with low, 10 with intermediate and 3 with high grade of malignancy. Remission rate was 80%, median overall survival 61 months and median disease free survival 59 months. No significant difference in survival were found between stage I and II, as well as between males and females. Conclusing, PT-NHLs in the island of Crete are more frequent in males than in females, and are predominantly (67%) of the intermediate grade of malignancy.
