RESUMEN

Background: Incidents affecting patient safety can cause unnecessary injury to a patient. It is generally accepted that incident reporting can improve patient safety. In Ethiopian public hospitals, especially in the Hadiya zone, patient safety-related incidents are commonly witnessed, but there is no evidence of reporting behavior among healthcare professionals. Purpose: This study aimed to assess patient safety incident reporting behavior and its associated factors among healthcare professionals working in public hospitals in the Hadiya zone, South Nation's, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region, Ethiopia, in 2021. Method: A cross-sectional study design was employed, among 345 healthcare professionals working in public hospitals in the Hadiya zone from August 1-30, 2021. A simple random sampling technique was used to select study participants, and a structured self-administered questionnaire which is adapted from a Hospital survey on patient safety survey and literature was used to collect the data. The data were entered into a data attraction template prepared using the Epi data software and then exported to the SPSS version 25 software for analysis. Descriptive analyses were conducted to determine the general characteristics and distributions of the data collected. An inferential statistical analysis was conducted using the logistic regression model to identify associations between outcome and predictor variables. The odds ratio with the 95 % confidence interval was used to test the associations between the outcome variable and predictor variables. Finally, statistical significance was set at p-value < 0.05. Results: From the total of 354 healthcare professionals expected, 334 participants, which gave a response rate of 94.4 %, had completed and returned the questionnaire. The result shows that overall patient safety incident reporting behavior among healthcare professionals was 28.7 % (95 % Confidence Interval (CI): (24.6, 33.2). Being a nurse professional [Adjusted Odd Ratio (AOR): 5.48, 95 % CI: (1.67, 17.80)], having job training [AOR: 2.87, 95 % CI: (1.46, 6.28)], having a team within the units [AOR=2.79, 95 %CI: (1.23, 6.28)], communication openness [AOR=2.78, 95 %CI: (1.44, 5.37)], and management support [AOR=2.8, 95 %CI; (1.40, 5.60)] were found to factor significantly associated with patient safety incident reporting behaviour. Conclusion: This study revealed that the incident-reporting behavior among healthcare professionals was low compared to previous studies. Being a nurse professional, having an on -job training, having a team within the unit, communication openness, perception of the time reporting takes, fear of administration sanction and management support were factors associated with their patient safety incident reporting behavior. Managers should focus on patient safety incidents, prepare continuous training programs, and provide open communication to improve patient safety incident reporting.

INTRODUCTION: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders have a greater negative impact on nurses' well-being, both physically and emotionally. Because of this issue, nurses take excessive leave, are absent from work, quit their profession, and have a lower quality of life. This leads to an increase in human and economic losses to health care institutions. However, there is a paucity of information about work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses in the study area. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the magnitude of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and its factors associated among nurses in Hospitals of West Shoa Zone, Central Ethiopia, 2021. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional facility-based study was conducted with 406 systematically selected nurses from March 2021 to June 2021. A simple random sampling was used to select study subjects. Data were gathered through face-to-face interviews. The data has been cleaned and checked, entered Epi Data 3.1, and exported into Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 25 for further analysis. Bivariable and multiple logistic regressions were used to determine the factors associated with outcome variable. The level of statistical significance was reported to be less than 0.05. RESULTS: The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders was 73.8% and the highest report 247 (62.2%) was seen in the lower back which was followed by the neck 182 (45.8%) and elbow 126 (31.7%), while the lowest affected body part was ankle 46(11.6%). Working in the medical ward (COR = 5.91, 95%CI: 2.53-13.79), surgical ward (COR = 9.63, 95%CI: 3.64-15.51), and operation room theater (COR = 6.02, 95%CI: 2.37-15.27) had higher risk to work-related musculoskeletal discomfort as compared to those who were worked in outpatient department. Nurses those experienced bending or twisting back as a problem during work 2.33 times more likely to have higher risk WMSDs as compared to those who didn't perceive it with (COR 2.33, 95% CI: 1.47-3.71). CONCLUSION: In this study, the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses was high. Working in room/ward, working in malposition, have no on job training to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders and bending or twisting back during work were identified as associated factors. Since work-related musculoskeletal disorders are preventable, educating the staff about the use of proper body mechanics and modifying the work environment is essential.

Nurses' intention of leaving their profession is the main challenge for healthcare and hospital administrators in many countries. It has significant impact on the performance, stability and productivity of health facilities. However, there is limited evidence on the nurses' intention to leave their profession and associated factors among nurses in developing countries including Ethiopia. This study was aimed to assess intention to leave nursing profession and its associated factors among nurses working in West Shoa Zone public Hospitals, Oromia region, Central Ethiopia, 2020. Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 393 nurses working in West Shoa zone public hospitals, Ethiopia from May 1 to 30, 2020. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Structured self- administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were cleaned and entered into Epi-data version 3.1 then exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Descriptive statistics such as frequency mean and standard deviation was computed to describe variables of the study. All covariates that were significant at P value <0.25 in bivariate logistic regression analysis were considered for further multivariable logistic regression analysis. Backward stepwise logistic regression model was fitted, crude ratio and odds ratio were calculated for factors at 95% confidence interval (CI). Level of statistical significance was declared at P value <0.05. In this study, the overall nurses' intention to leave nursing profession was 61.3% [95% CI (56.5%, 66.2%)]. Nurses' educational status, age, working experience, working position, professional commitment, job stress, job satisfaction and organizational factor were significantly associated with nurses' intention to leave their profession. The overall nurses' intention to leave their profession was high. Reducing this level of leaving intention needs collaborative intervention related to factors like safety of working environment, job related stress, job satisfaction, professional commitment and education opportunities which are a big homework for managers on health sectors of West Shoa zone public Hospitals and higher level health sector managers.

Intravenous fluid administration is the most common invasive procedure widely practiced in hospital settings. Globally, approximately 25 million people receive intravenous fluid therapy. Different factors affect nurse's intravenous fluid administration practices; that it may influences on the patient's outcome, increase morbidity and mortality. Previous study indicates that healthcare providers especially in developing countries have skills gap related to intravenous fluid administration. The purpose of this study was aimed to assess the intravenous fluid administration practices and its associated factors among nurses and midwives working in public hospitals of West Shewa zone, Central Ethiopia. Materials and methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study design was employed among 396 nurses and midwives in public hospitals in West Shewa zone, Central Ethiopia, from March 1 to 31, 2019. A Simple random sampling was used to select study participants using structured self-administered questionnaire, and observational checklist. The logistic regression model was used to identify association, and odds ratio was used to test the strength of the associations with outcome variable and predictor variables. Results: In this study, 59.3% (95%CI = 54.7%-64.5%) participants was had inadequate intravenous fluid administration practice. Inadequate knowledge (AOR 2.1; CI 95% = 1.36-3.36), being untrained (AOR 1.7; 95% CI = 1.04-2.86), unavailability of supervision (AOR 1.8; CI 95% = 1.14-2.99), and absence of incentives and promotion for nurses and midwives (AOR 2.1; CI 95% = 1.19-3.62) were significantly associated with outcome variable. Conclusion: Nearly seven in ten participants in the study setting were inadequate intravenous fluid practice. Inadequate knowledge, training, and absence of supervision by senior staffs, and absence of incentives and promotion for nurses and midwives were the main factors affecting intravenous fluid administration practice. Refresher courses, supervision, incentives and promotions were needed to nurses and midwives for an improvement of the intravenous fluid administration practice.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the utilisation of evidence-based practice (EBP) and its associated factors among nurses working in public hospitals of West Shoa zone, Oromia, central Ethiopia, in 2021. DESIGN: Institution-based cross-sectional study. SETTING: Government hospitals including four primary hospitals, three general hospitals and a referral hospital. The study was conducted between 10 August and 30 August 2021. PARTICIPANTS: 418 randomly selected nurses working in public hospitals of West Shoa. Data were collected via a structured, self-administered questionnaire, entered into EpiData V.3.1 and exported to SPSS V.26 for analysis. OUTCOME MEASURE: Utilisation of EBP (good/poor). RESULTS: 52.4% (95% CI 47.6% to 57.3%) of nurses had good EBP utilisation. Level of hospital (adjusted OR (AOR) 0.456 (95% CI 0.253 to 0.821)), administrative position (AOR 2.7 (1.09 to 6.69)), level of education (AOR 0.353 (0.181 to 0.686)), knowledge about EBP (AOR 1.785, (1.13 to 2.82)), availability of time (AOR 0.523 (0.28 to 0.96)), and cooperative and supportive colleagues (AOR 0.429 (0.235 to 0.783)) were associated with good utilisation of evidence-based nursing practice. CONCLUSION: The utilisation of EBP among nurses is low. Level of education, knowledge about EBP, sufficient time at the workplace, and cooperative and supportive colleagues were among the factors associated with good EBP utilisation. The healthcare system in general, hospital management specifically, needs to design strategies to improve evidence-based nursing practice in the area.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent is the population whose age between 10-19 years old. They are undergoing rapid growth, development and are one of the nutritionally at-risk groups who should need attention. Adolescent undernutrition is a worldwide problem. Even if this stage brings the second window of opportunity to break the intergenerational cycle of undernutrition little is known specifically in the study area. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of undernutrition and its associated factors among school adolescent girls in Abuna Gindeberet district, Central Ethiopia, 2021. METHODS: Institution-based cross-sectional quantitative study design was conducted in Abuna Gindeberet district among 10-19 years adolescent girls attending primary and secondary schools from January 1-30, 2021. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select 587 adolescent girls. Data were collected by using interviewer-administered structured and anthropometric measurements. Data were coded, then entered into the Epi-info version 7.2.2.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 and WHO Anthro plus for analysis. Logistic regression analysis was done to identify predictors of under nutrition. Level of statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05. RESULTS: The overall magnitude of stunting and thinness were 15.4% [95% CI (12-18)] and 14.2% [95% CI (11-17)] respectively. Number of meals per day [AOR = 3.62, 95% C.I (2.16, 6.05)], adolescent girls of lower grades [AOR = 2.08, 95% C.I (1.07, 4.04)] and who did not begin menstruation [AOR = 1.71, 95% C.I (1.06, 2.73)] were significantly associated with stunting. Adolescent girls engaged in vigorous intensity activities [AOR = 2.51, 95% C.I (1.14, 5.54)], poor dietary diversity score [AOR = 4.05, 95% C.I (1.43, 11.46)] and adolescent age [AOR = 3.77, 95% C.I (1.06, 13.37)] were significantly associated with thinness among adolescent girls. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent girl's undernutrition is a public health problem in the study area. The number of meals per day, adolescent girls of lower grades and who did not begin menstruation were significantly associated with stunting as well as adolescent girls engaged in vigorous-intensity activities; poor dietary diversity score and adolescent age were significantly associated with thinness among adolescent girls. Therefore, government and other stakeholders should focus on these identified factors to improve the nutritional status of adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the prevalence of anemia among female adolescents and factors associated with it in Ambo town, West Shewa, Ethiopia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 523 randomly selected female adolescents living in Ambo town, Ethiopia from August 5-29, 2018. Data were collected through structured interview using a structured questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were done and the hemoglobin value was measured on the field and adjusted for the altitude. Logistic regression analysis was done to identify predictors of anemia. Level of statistical significance was declared at P<0.05. RESULTS: In this study, 39% (95% CI= 34.8-43%) participants were anemic, of which 63 (30.9%) and 46 (22.5%) female adolescents were stunted and wasted, respectively. Anemia was considerably high among female adolescents with high dietary diversity score. Adolescents born to mothers who were unable to read and write (AOR= 3.27; 95% CI=1.79-5.97), who always take tea and/or coffee within 30 minutes after meal (AOR= 6.19; 95% CI=3.32-11.48), who were wasted (AOR=1.67; 95% CI=1.11-2.52), and who had already attained their menses (AOR=1.93; 95% CI=1.19-3.13) were more likely to be anemic compared to their counterparts. CONCLUSION: Nearly four in ten female adolescents in the study setting were anemic. Anemia among female adolescents was a moderate public health problem. Adolescents born to mothers who were unable to read and write, who consumed tea/coffee within 30 minutes after a meal, who were wasted, and who had already attained menses should be prioritized for interventions aiming at addressing iron-deficiency anemia in female adolescents.
