PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The study aims to determine the incidence of fracture-related infection (hereinafter referred to as the FRI) at a Level I trauma centre over a three-year period. It also aimed to determine the risk factors, to observe confirmatory and suggestive criteria in line with the applicable recommendations, and to evaluate the bacterial spectrum in a diagnosed FRI. MATERIAL AND METHODS It is a retrospective-prospective study carried out through studying the documentation. The study included all patients diagnosed with FRI and treated between 2019 and 2021, except for the patients with hand fractures since minor phalangeal fractures of the fingers were largely treated by the outpatient department, no osteosynthesis was performed in the operating room, and these patients were not followed up at our department. RESULTS The FRI incidence was 2.33% of all osteosyntheses performed at the Level 1 trauma centre in the period 2019-2021. The FRI was most often caused by pyogenic cocci agents and the FRI developed most frequently within 6 months after osteosynthesis. The site at risk was the lower limb region. The FRI incidence was most often indicated by suggestive clinical criteria (redness, secretion, pain) and radiological criteria (delayed healing, non-union). Overall, 42.19% of treated nonunions were later diagnosed as FRI. At the time of FRI diagnosis, the CRP values were normal in 21.7% of patients. DISCUSSION The FRI incidence rate in 2019-2021 was 2.33%, which corresponds with the values reported in other papers focusing on the incidence of infectious complications after osteosynthesis. Fang and Depypere reported 1-2% of infectious complications. The most common risk factors are open fractures, which account for 20.16% in our cohort. Ktistakis and Depypere describe the incidence of osteomyelitis in 30% of treated open fractures. In our cohort, the incidence of FRI was significantly higher in lower limb fractures. Bezstarosti, Wang and Pesch published similar results, with some deviations. The time from osteosynthesis to final FRI diagnosis varied from a few weeks to several years. In more than half of the patients the FRI developed within 6 months after performed osteosynthesis. Metsemakers and Fang refer to the very same trend. The CRP levels in the study population varied a lot. Xing-qi Zhao describes CRP as a less sensitive (sensitivity 65.6%) but more specific marker (specificity 75.4%). According to the available literature, the most common agents causing infectious complications of osteosynthesis are gram-positive cocci, S. aureus in particular. In our study, G+ pyogenic cocci were clearly the most commonly detected, which is consistent with the results of studies by Fang and Depypere, focused on the incidence of infectious complications. The most common FRI clinical manifestations included wound secretion, redness, swelling and pain. Furthermore, suggestive radiological criteria, especially delayed healing and non-union also indicated the FRI occurrence. According to Fang, the most common clinical manifestations of infectious complications include pain, swelling, redness and wound dehiscence. Fang reports that the most common radiologic findings are the periosteal reaction, loosening of the implant and delayed healing or non-union, which is consistent with our cohort. In the cohort of non-unions surgically treated at our department, FRI was subsequently confirmed in 42.19% of cases. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of FRI at Level 1 trauma centre was 2.33% of operated fractures in 2019-2021, with pyogenic cocci being the most common infectious agents. The FRI usually developed within 6 months after osteosynthesis. The typical site for the FRI development was the lower limb region, the ongoing FRI was indicated by suggestive clinical criteria (redness, secretion, pain) and radiological criteria (delayed healing and a non-union). Overall, 42.19% of treated non-unions were later diagnosed as FRI. OBJECTIVES: The relationship of degeneration to symptoms has been questioned. MRI detects apparently similar disc degeneration and degenerative changes in subjects both with and without back pain. We aimed to overcome these problems by re-annotating MRIs from asymptomatic and symptomatics groups onto the same grading system. METHODS: We analysed disc degeneration in pre-existing large MRI datasets. Their MRIs were all originally annotated on different scales. We re-annotated all MRIs independent of their initial grading system, using a verified, rapid automated MRI annotation system (SpineNet) which reported degeneration on the Pfirrmann (1-5) scale, and other degenerative features (herniation, endplate defects, marrow signs, spinal stenosis) as binary present/absent. We compared prevalence of degenerative features between symptomatics and asymptomatics. RESULTS: Pfirrmann degeneration grades in relation to age and spinal level were very similar for the two independent groups of symptomatics over all ages and spinal levels. Severe degenerative changes were significantly more prevalent in discs of symptomatics than asymptomatics in the caudal but not the rostral lumbar discs in subjects < 60 years. We found high co-existence of degenerative features in both populations. Degeneration was minimal in around 30% of symptomatics < 50 years. CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed age and disc level are significant in determining imaging differences between asymptomatic and symptomatic populations and should not be ignored. Automated analysis, by rapidly combining and comparing data from existing groups with MRIs and information on LBP, provides a way in which epidemiological and 'big data' analysis could be advanced without the expense of collecting new groups. Relative leptin resistance in childhood to absolute leptin resistance in maturity suggests sleep, eating behaviour, and the psychological state as probable causes. The current body of research provides inconclusive evidence linking G2548A and Q223R to obesity. Furthermore, we could find very little data that have observed the association between the environment and gene polymorphism, especially in the multiethnic population that exists in Malaysia. This study searched for a possible link between sleeping habits, eating behaviour, and stress indicators with plasma leptin and its genetic variation in young adult Malaysian healthcare students. The study involved 185 first- and second-year medical and dental students from a healthcare university. Polymerase Chain Reaction−Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) determined the genotype, Enzyme Linked Immunoabsorbant Assay (ELISA) tested the serum leptin, and a self-administered questionnaire evaluated sleep, eating behaviour, and psychological condition. Gender and ethnicity are linked to fasting plasma leptin levels (p < 0.001). Plasma leptin also affects stress, anxiety, and sadness. Leptin (LEP) and Leptin Receptor (LEPR) polymorphisms were not associated with BMI, plasma leptin, sleep, eating behaviour, or psychological state. Young adult Malaysian Indians were obese and overweight, while Chinese were underweight. These findings imply overweight and obese participants were in stage I of leptin resistance and lifestyle change or leptin therapy could prevent them from becoming cripplingly obese as they age.

Despite our growing understanding of the global carbon cycle, scientific consensus on the drivers and mechanisms that control dissolved organic carbon (DOC) turnover in aquatic systems is lacking, hampered by the mismatch between research that approaches DOC reactivity from either intrinsic (inherent chemical properties) or extrinsic (environmental context) perspectives. Here we propose a conceptual view of DOC reactivity in which the combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors controls turnover rates and determines which reactions will occur. We review three major types of reactions (biological, photochemical, and flocculation) from an intrinsic chemical perspective and further define the environmental features that modulate the expression of chemically inherent reactivity potential. Finally, we propose hypotheses of how extrinsic and intrinsic factors together shape patterns in DOC turnover across the land-to-ocean continuum, underscoring that there is no intrinsic DOC reactivity without environmental context. By acknowledging the intrinsic-extrinsic control duality, our framework intends to foster improved modeling of DOC reactivity and its impact on ecosystem services.

Local tribes use the leaves of Ficus lepicarpa B. (Moraceae), a traditional Malaysian medicine, as a vegetable dish, a tonic, and to treat ailments including fever, jaundice and ringworm. The purpose of this study was to look into the possible therapeutic effects of F. lepicarpa leaf extract against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver damage in rats. The DPPH test was used to measure the antioxidant activity of plants. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used for the phytochemical analysis (GCMS). Six groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to the following treatment regimens: control group, CCl4 alone, F. lepicarpa 400 mg/kg alone, CCl4 + F. lepicarpa 100 mg/kg, CCl4 + F. lepicarpa 200 mg/kg and CCl4 + F. lepicarpa 400 mg/kg. The rats were euthanized after two weeks, and biomarkers of liver function and antioxidant enzyme status were assessed. To assess the extent of liver damage and fibrosis, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations of liver tissue were undertaken. The total phenolic content and the total flavonoid content in methanol extract of F. lepicarpa leaves were 58.86 ± 0.04 mg GAE/g and 44.31 ± 0.10 mg CAE/g, respectively. F. lepicarpa's inhibitory concentration (IC50) for free radical scavenging activity was reported to be 3.73 mg/mL. In a dose-related manner, F. lepicarpa was effective in preventing an increase in serum ALT, serum AST and liver MDA. Histopathological alterations revealed that F. lepicarpa protects against the oxidative stress caused by CCl4. The immunohistochemistry results showed that proinflammatory cytokines (tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, prostaglandin E2) were suppressed. The antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and free-radical scavenging activities of F. lepicarpa can be related to its hepatoprotective benefits.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Since the COVID-19 pandemic confinement was established in Spain on March 9, 2020, the number of visits to the pediatric Emergency Department (ED) has decreased dramatically, probably due to the fear of parents becoming infected in the hospital environment. The aim of this work was to analyze the medium-term consequences during the first 9 months after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in children with acute appendicitis (AA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on children operated on for AA in our institution between 2017 and 2020, who were distributed in two groups according to the date of surgery: COVID-19 group (after March 9, 2020) and control group (before March 9, 2020). Demographic variables, associated symptoms, time from symptoms onset, hospital stay, rate of complicated AA and postoperative complications were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 1274 patients were included (288 COVID group; 986 control group), without demographic differences. Time from symptom onset was significantly longer in COVID-19 group (34.5 vs. 24.2h; p=0.021), although no differences in associated symptoms were observed between both groups. COVID-19 group presented a higher rate of complicated AA (20.1% vs. 14%; OR: 1.55; CI 95% [1.10-2.18]; p=0.008), a longer hospital stay (3.5 vs. 2.8 days; p=0.042) as well as a higher rate of postoperative complications (21.5% vs. 15.7%; OR: 1.47; CI 95% [(1.06-2.04)]; p=0.008). CONCLUSION: In our experience there was a negative medium-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children with acute appendicitis: delayed ED visits, increased rate of complicated AA, increased hospital stay and increased postoperative complications.

Exoelectrogenic biofilm and the associated microbial electrochemical processes have recently been intensively studied for water treatment, but their response to and interaction with polyethylene (PE) microplastics which are widespread in various aquatic environments has never been reported. Here, we investigated how and to what extent PE microplastics would affect the electrochemistry and microbiology of exoelectrogenic biofilm in both microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). When the PE microplastics concentration was increased from 0 to 75 mg/L in the MECs, an apparent decline in the maximum current density (from 1.99 to 0.74 A/m2) and abundance of electroactive bacteria (EAB) in the exoelectrogenic biofilm was noticed. While in the MFCs, the current output was not significantly influenced and the abundance of EAB lightly increased at 25 mg/L microplastics. In addition, PE microplastics restrained the viability of the exoelectrogenic biofilms in both systems, leading to a higher system electrode resistance. Moreover, the microbial community richness and the microplastics-related operational taxonomic units decreased with PE microplastics. Furthermore, the electron transfer-related genes (e.g., pilA and mtrC) and cytochrome c concentration decreased after adding microplastics. This study provides the first glimpse into the influence of PE microplastics on the exoelectrogenic biofilm with the potential mechanisms revealed at the gene level, laying a methodological foundation for the future development of efficient water treatment technologies.

Wastewater from pharmaceutical and related industries contains many residual pharmaceutical components rich in color and high COD contents, which cannot be removed through the traditional wastewater treatment processes. Recently, microbial electrolysis ultraviolet cell (MEUC) process has shown its promising potential to remove recalcitrant organics because of its merits of wide pH range, iron-free, and without complications of iron sludge production. However, its application to the real pharmaceutical-rich industrial wastewater is still unknown. In this study, the MEUC process was validated with real ciprofloxacin-rich (6863.79 ± 2.21 µg L-1) industrial wastewater (6840 ± 110 mg L-1 of COD). The MEUC process achieved 100% removal of ciprofloxacin, 100% decolorization, and 99.1% removal of COD within 12, 60 and 30 h, respectively, when it was operated at pH-controlled at 7.8, applied voltage of 0.6 V, UV intensity of 10 mW cm-2, and cathodic aeration velocity of 0.005 mL min-1 mL-1. Moreover, fluorescence analysis showed that protein- and humic-like substances in such wastewater were effectively removed, providing further evidence of its high treatment efficiency. Furthermore, eco-toxicity testing with luminescent bacteria Vibro Feschri confirmed that the treated effluent was utterly non-toxic. The results demonstrated the broad application potential of MEUC technology for treating industrial wastewater.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to explore the degree of agreement of intensive care unit nurses working on a set of medication error preventive strategies and to examine possible predictors of nurses' knowledge, attitude and behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational, international, and cross-sectional study. Iran, Malta, Spain, Pakistan, Nepal, Qatar, Ecuador, Australia, Finland, Italy, Egypt, and Jordan were the countries included in this survey. To collect data, the Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior in Medication Errors questionnaire was used. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed for the socio-demographic characteristics of the sample and three multiple logistic regressions were performed. RESULTS: The international sample consists of 1383 nurses, of whom 478 (34.6%) were men and 900 (65.1%) were women and their mean age was 35.61 years with a range of 19-61. Descriptive statistics conducted on the international sample show a medium to high degree of agreement among participants concerning some preventive strategies of medication error. In addition, the results of the present study show a strong relationship between positive nurses' attitudes and correct behaviors and/or adequate knowledge, as well as between adequate knowledge and correct behaviors (p< 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Further studies are needed to explore the issue of medication error concerning nurses' cultural backgrounds, as well as to assess similarities and disparities among international nurses.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Magnetoencephalography is sensitive to functional connectivity changes associated with concussion. However, the directional influences between functionally related regions remain unexplored. In this study, we therefore evaluated concussion-related magnetoencephalography-based effective connectivity changes within resting-state default mode network regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Resting-state magnetoencephalography was acquired for 8 high school football players with concussion at 3 time points (preseason, postconcussion, postseason), as well as 8 high school football players without concussion and 8 age-matched controls at 2 time points (preseason, postseason). Time-series from the default mode network regions were extracted, and effective connectivity between them was computed for 5 different frequency bands. The default mode network regions were grouped into anterior and posterior default mode networks. The combined posterior-to-anterior and anterior-to-posterior effective connectivity values were averaged to generate 2 sets of values for each subject. The effective connectivity values were compared using a repeated measures ANOVA across time points for the concussed, nonconcussed, and control groups, separately. RESULTS: A significant increase in posterior-to-anterior effective connectivity from preseason to postconcussion (corrected P value = .013) and a significant decrease in posterior-to-anterior effective connectivity from postconcussion to postseason (corrected P value = .028) were observed in the concussed group. Changes in effective connectivity were only significant within the delta band. Anterior-to-posterior connectivity demonstrated no significant change. Effective connectivity in the nonconcussed group and controls did not show significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: The unidirectional increase in effective connectivity postconcussion may elucidate compensatory processes, invoking use of posterior regions to aid the function of susceptible anterior regions following brain injury. These findings support the potential value of magnetoencephalography in exploring directional changes of the brain network following concussion.

PURPOSE: Chronic sinusitis can result from variable types of immune-mediated process, whose pathogenesis is not fully understood. Triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cells 1 and 2 (TREM-1, TREM-2) are involved in myeloid cell activation enabling these cells to fine-tune the inflammatory response, which may have an impact on subsequent adaptive immunity and may be the key factor in pathogenesis. The aim of the study was to analyse soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 molecules in maxillary sinus lavage fluid and compare the defined subgroups selected from patients with chronic sinusitis with/without nasal polyps and allergy (asthma and allergic rhinitis). METHODS: The levels of soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 were measured by Elisa test in a cohort of patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis (n=45). We compared subgroups of patients with nasal polyps (n=33) and allergy (n=25: inclusive of asthma (n=11) and allergic rhinitis (n=14)) with the control group of patients without nasal polyps (n=13), and without allergy (n=21). RESULTS: The study did not prove the difference between subgroups with and without nasal polyps. The levels of soluble TREM-1 did not differ significantly between patients with allergy (asthma and allergic rhinitis) and the control group without allergy (p=0.4804). The levels of soluble TREM-2 were significantly higher in patients with allergy (p=0.0028), asthma (p=0.0103) and allergic rhinitis (p=0.0137) as compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest the role of TREM-2­mediated activation of myeloid cells in chronic sinusitis accompanied by allergy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (Tab. 6, Ref. 25).

INTRODUCTION: In human glioblastomas, glioma pathogenesis-related protein1 (GliPR1) is overexpressed and appears to be an oncoprotein. We investigated whether GliPR1 knockdown in glioma cells by RNA interference exerts anti-glioma effects. METHODS: Experiments used human glioblastoma cell lines transduced with GliPR1 shRNA (sh#301, sh#258). Transduction produced stringent doxycycline-dependent GliPR1 knockdown in clones (via lentiviral "all-in-one" TetOn-shRNA vector) or stable GliPR1 knockdown in polyclonal cells (via constitutive retroviral-shRNA vector). In vitro assessments included cellular proliferation and clonogenic survival. In vivo assessments in tumor-bearing nude mice included tumor growth and survival. RESULTS: Using doxycycline-dependent GliPR1 knockdown, shGliPR1-transduced U87-MG clones demonstrated reductions in cellular proliferation in the presence versus absence of doxycycline. Using stable GliPR1 knockdown, polyclonal shGliPR1-transduced U87-MG, A172, and U343-MG cells consistently showed decreased clonogenic survival and induced apoptosis (higher proportion of early apoptotic cells) compared to control shLuc-transduced cells. In tumor-bearing nude mice, using doxycycline-dependent GliPR1 knockdown, subcutaneous and cranial transplantation of the U87-MG clone 980-5 (transduced with GliPR1 sh#301) resulted in reduced subcutaneous tumor volume and cerebral tumor area in doxycycline-treated mice versus those left untreated. Using stable GliPR1 knockdown, nude mice cranially transplanted with polyclonal U87-MG cells transduced with GliPR1 sh#258 had significantly prolonged survival compared to mice cranially transplanted with control shLuc-transduced cells (41 versus 26 days; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: GliPR1 knockdown in glioma cells decreased cellular proliferation, decreased clonogenic survival, and induced apoptosis in vitro, and reduced glioblastoma tumor growth and prolonged survival in vivo. These findings support that GliPR1 may have potential value as a therapeutic target.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex pool of compounds with a key role in the global carbon cycle. To understand its role in natural and engineered systems, efficient approaches are necessary for tracking DOM quality and quantity. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) is very widely used to identify and quantify different fractions of DOM as proxies of DOM source, concentration and biogeochemical processing. A major limitation of the PARAFAC approach is the requirement for a large data set containing many variable samples in which the fractions vary independently. This severely curtails the possibilities to study fluorescence composition and behavior in small or unique datasets. Herein, we present a simple and inexpensive experimental procedure that makes it possible to mathematically decompose a small dataset containing only highly-correlated fluorescent fractions. The approach, which uses widely-available commercial extraction sorbents and previously established protocols to expand the original dataset and inject the missing chemical variability, can be widely implemented at low cost. A demonstration of the procedure shows how a robust six-component PARAFAC model can be extracted from even a river-water dataset with only five bulk samples. Widespread adoption of the procedure for analyzing small fluorescence datasets is needed to confirm the suspected ubiquity of certain DOM fluorescence fractions and to create a shared inventory of ubiquitous components. Such an inventory could greatly simplify and improve the use of fluorescence as a tool to investigate biogeochemical processing of DOM in diverse water sources.

The spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (White), is a new invasive pest in the United States. To quantify spotted lanternfly population abundance, one must understand this pest's dispersion pattern, that is, the spatial arrangement of individuals within a population. Spotted lanternflies overwinter in egg masses from late fall to May, making this life stage suitable for population assessments. We measured the dispersion pattern of egg masses at two types of sites: a suburban housing development, where we used individual trees as the sampling unit, and rural woodlots, where we used individual trees and also plots with 5.64 m radius as sampling units. Plots were the same size as those recommended for monitoring the gypsy moth, a well-studied pest with similar egg laying habit to the spotted lanternfly. Egg masses in both sampling units were counted up to a height of 3 m. With trees as the sampling unit, egg masses were aggregated in 12 of 20 rural sampling universes, randomly dispersed at 6, and completely absent at 2. Similar patterns were seen when using the 5.64-m radius rural sampling units and for suburban sampling universes. We calculated sample size requirements for a range of mean densities at a precision of 25 and 30%. Additionally, the vertical distribution of egg masses was characterized on the invasive tree of heaven [Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle], a preferred host for spotted lanternflies. For small trees, there was a positive relationship between number of egg masses in the bottom 3 m of the tree and the total count.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: SWI is an advanced imaging modality that is especially useful in cerebral microhemorrhage detection. Such microhemorrhages have been identified in adult contact sport athletes, and the sequelae of these focal bleeds are thought to contribute to neurodegeneration. The purpose of this study was to utilize SWI to determine whether the prevalence and incidence of microhemorrhages in adolescent football players are significantly greater than those of adolescent noncontact athletes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preseason and postseason SWI was performed and evaluated on 78 adolescent football players. SWI was also performed on 27 adolescent athletes who reported no contact sport history. Two separate one-tailed Fisher exact tests were performed to determine whether the prevalence and incidence of microhemorrhages in adolescent football players are greater than those of noncontact athlete controls. RESULTS: Microhemorrhages were observed in 12 football players. No microhemorrhages were observed in any controls. Adolescent football players demonstrated a significantly greater prevalence of microhemorrhages than adolescent noncontact controls (P = .02). Although 2 football players developed new microhemorrhages during the season, microhemorrhage incidence during 1 football season was not statistically greater in the football population than in noncontact control athletes (P = .55). CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent football players have a greater prevalence of microhemorrhages compared with adolescent athletes who have never engaged in contact sports. While microhemorrhage incidence during 1 season is not significantly greater in adolescent football players compared to adolescent controls, there is a temporal association between playing football and the appearance of new microhemorrhages.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) are immunologically mediated processes caused by hypersensitivity reaction accompanied by similar features including lymphocytic alveolitis and granuloma formation. Recent studies describe the role of TREM receptors in T cell activation, differentiation, and granuloma formation. Alveolar macrophages activation via TREM receptors may be the key factor mediating subsequent immune response. The aim of the study was to analyse TREM-1 and TREM-2 expression to identify further molecular mechanisms participating in the immunopathogenesis of sarcoidosis and HP. METHODS: Flow cytometry was performed to analyse TREM-1 and TREM-2 expression on CD14+ cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from patients having sarcoidosis or HP and a control group. RESULTS: The study proved increased TREM-1 expression on alveolar macrophages in pulmonary sarcoidosis and diminished TREM-1 expression in HP-Sarcoidosis: median: 76.7; HP: median: 29.9; control: median: 53.3, (sarcoidosis versus HP: p < 0.001; sarcoidosis versus control: p < 0.05). TREM-2 expression was increased in both, sarcoidosis and HP-sarcoidosis: median: 34.79; HP: median: 36.00; control: median: 12.98, (sarcoidosis versus control: p < 0.05; HP versus control: p < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed negative correlation between TREM-1 and total number of CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. In sarcoidosis TREM-1 expression decreased with changes of HRCT image, decrease in CD4/CD8 ratio and decrease in DLCO. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in TREM receptor expression in sarcoidosis (increase in TREM-1 and TREM-2) and HP (increase in TREM-2) and correlation analysis suggests that activation via TREM may participate in typical immunological characteristics of sarcoidosis and HP.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The clinical prospective study presents the results of minimally invasive harvesting of cancellous bone tissue in trauma indications. We focused on evaluating the clinical outcomes of this technique, particularly on the amount of cancellous bone harvested, the effectiveness of its use and complications. The pain in the bone graft harvest site is evaluated and compared with the pain after a standard harvest from the iliac crest. MATERIAL AND METHODS All the patients aged 18-90 years, in whom cancellous bone was harvested by minimally invasive technique using a bone cutter were included prospectively in the study. It was used to fill the defect in treating a fracture or in surgical treatment of non-union. The patients, in whom the grafts harvested in this manner were combined with another substitute, were not included in the study. Thus, 57 adult patients (40 men, 17 women) were included in the group in the period from March 2012 to March 2016. 37 patients, i.e. 65% of the total number of 57 patients, arrived for the evaluation of the clinical outcome. The minimally invasive graft harvesting was performed using the Aesculap® cutters. The graft was harvested either from the skeleton directly in the area of surgical wound or by a mini incision above the harvest site in the area under surgical drapes. The diameter of the cutter was selected based on the planned necessary number of grafts and with account taken of the harvest site. There were 6 harvest sites selected - proximal humerus, proximal ulna, iliac crest, greater trochanter of femur, distal femur and proximal tibia. The age and gender of patients, harvest site, type of the used cutter and the total number of harvested grafts were recorded in the study. The patients underwent a clinical follow-up at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. The healing of the fracture or non-union was assessed on radiographs and in case of any doubt a CT scan was indicated. The pain at the graft harvest site was quantified with the use of the VAS score. A possible correlation between the age and the harvest site pain was explored by means of the Pearson s correlation coefficient. RESULTS In surgical management of fractures, 10.98 cm³ of bone marrow (σ 5.32) was harvested on average, in non-unions it was 10.85 cm³ (σ 5.52). With the above described technique, the mean healing time of lower extremity fractures was 26 weeks, in upper extremity it was 22 weeks. The non-unions of lower extremity and upper extremity healed after 28 weeks and 19 weeks, respectively. The average pain at the harvest site was 4.08 (σ 2.21, p ˂ 0.001). By calculating the Pearson's correlation coefficient it was confirmed that there is no correlation between the age and pain VAS score at the harvest site (r = -0.05). No early complications at the graft harvest site were observed in our group of patients. DISCUSSION On average, 10.98 cm³ of bone marrow was harvested in treated fractures, which in comparison to standard harvests from the iliac crest offers sufficient amount of tissue to treat complicated fractures and non-unions. Technically, the standard harvest site of cancellous bone tissue from the iliac crest is replaceable. The harvesting technique offers an interesting alternative also in terms of the duration of surgery and material. CONCLUSIONS Our study confirmed that by the minimally invasive technique of bone graft harvesting adequate amount of tissue to treat defect fractures and non-unions can be harvested. Spongioplasty using grafts harvested in this manner is effective, with a minimum percentage of non-unions. The advantage of this technique is the proximity of the harvest site and the operative field and low level of pain. The minimally invasive graft harvesting represents a technique with a low risk of postoperative and late complications. Key words: bone graft, autografts, minimally invasive surgery, ilium, pain.

High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) elucidates the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) through the unequivocal assignment of molecular formulas. When HRMS is used as a detector coupled to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the molecular fingerprints of DOM are further augmented. However, the identification of eluting compounds remains impossible when DOM chromatograms consist of unresolved humps. Here, we utilized the concept of mathematical chromatography to achieve information reduction and feature extraction. Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) was applied to a dataset describing the reverse-phase separation of DOM in headwater streams located in southeast Sweden. A dataset consisting of 1355 molecular formulas and 7178 mass spectra was reduced to five components that described 96.89% of the data. Each component summarized the distinct chromatographic elution of molecular formulas with different polarity. Component scores represented the abundance of the identified HPLC features in each sample. Using this chemometric approach allowed the identification of common patterns in HPLC-HRMS datasets by reducing thousands of mass spectra to only a few statistical components. Unlike in principal component analysis (PCA), components closely followed the analytical principles of HPLC-HRMS and therefore represented more realistic pools of DOM. This approach provides a wealth of new opportunities for unravelling the composition of complex mixtures in natural and engineered systems.

We investigated the capability of transfluthrin on US military camouflage netting to reduce collections of tabanid biting flies in a warm-temperate field environment on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We found that transfluthrin significantly reduced collections of a variety of medically and veterinarily important tabanids inside protected areas by up to 96% upon initial treatment and up to 74% after 20 days posttreatment. These results suggest that transfluthrin could be an effective element in the US Department of Defense integrated pest management system and leveraged in civilian scenarios to protect livestock and humans from potential mechanical transmission of pathogens and disruption of activities caused by painful bites.

The aim of the experiment was to examine the effect of a diet enriched with Lactobacillus plantarum and/or ß-glucan on the immune parameters in the juvenile tench (Tinca tinca). Fish were fed for 14 days different diets (phase 1 of the experiment), a dry commercial starter feed in the control group or the same feed supplemented with: 1% ß-1,3/1,6-glucan in group G, 108 cfu L. plantarum g-1 in group L, 1% ß-1,3/1,6-glucan + 108 cfu L. plantarum g-1 in group G+L. During consecutive 14 days all fish were fed the commercial feed alone (phase 2). The stimulating effects of the tested preparations was evaluated twice, at the end of each experimental phase. Dietary supplementation of ß-1,3/1,6-glucan considerably improved the humoral innate immune response (activity of lysozyme and total Ig) and the pinocytotic activity of phagocytes. Supplement of L. plantarum improved the ability of the head kidney phagocytes (RBA) to carry out oxygen burst in L and G+L groups. A similar effect was observed for the killing activity of phagocytes (PKA) from the head kidney after the stimulation of A. hydrophila, and the effect persisted for two weeks after the commercial feed regime was resumed. A significant increase in the proliferative activity of B lymphocytes originating from the head kidney was observed in groups L and G+L. The study has revealed that the addition of the tested G+L synbiotic to dry diet stimulates the innate immune response mechanisms in the juvenile tench.
