RESUMEN

AIM: To determine the effect of Jigsaw technique in nursing education by meta-analysis method. BACKGROUND: Innovative methods actively engage students in the learning process, contrasting with the traditional memorization-based methods. Jigsaw technique, as one of these approaches, allows students to collaborate in small groups with the aim of accomplishing a shared learning objective. DESIGN: A meta-analysis of observational studies. DATA SOURCES: Google Scholar, Science Direct, Pubmed, Web of Science, ProQuest, Medline, CINAHL and Cochrane Library electronic databases in English was systematically searched from inception from January 2011 to December 2022. METHOD: This review used the preferred reporting items for meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The Cochrane Risk-of-Bias (RoB) Tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. Statistical analysis was conducted with the Comprehensive Meta Analysis (CMA) software. RESULTS: In the study, 11 studies from 6 different countries were examined. It has been determined that the Jigsaw learning technique in nursing students is a method that enables students to increase their academic success compared with traditional learning methods. In addition, it has been determined because of studies that Jigsaw learning technique is effective in students; interpersonal relations, critical thinking, communication and clinical skills, as well as increasing motivation, self-concept and attitudes such as self-confidence. Funnel plot, Classic Fail-Safe N, Begg-Mazumdar Rank tests showed no publication bias. CONCLUSION: As a result of the meta-analysis, it was determined that the Jigsaw technique had a positive effect on the academic achievement, skills and attitudes of nursing students.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of personal space on blood pressure using the Giger and Davidhizar transcultural assessment model. METHODS: The quasi-experimental study was carried out in a maternity hospital located in Isparta, Turkey, from March to July 2014, and comprised all the women hospitalised in the obstetrics and gynaecology clinic. The blood pressure measurements were performed by two nursing students; one male and one female. The questionnaire was composed by the researchers in reference to the sub-dimensions of the Giger and Davidhizar transcultural assessment model. RESULTS: There were 115 women with a mean age of 26.50±4.86 years. Overall, 81(70.4%) patients were members of a nuclear family, and 43(37.4%) were primary school graduates. There was no significant difference in the diastolic blood pressure values measured by female and male students (p>0.05), but systolic blood pressure values measured by the female and male students were significantly different (p<0.05).. CONCLUSIONS: Female patients had increased systolic blood pressure values when they were measured by male nursing students and the increase was correlated with ethnicity and income level.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Professional values improve the quality of nurses' professional lives, reduce emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, increase personal success, and help to make collaborations with the members of the healthcare team more frequent. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the professional values of Turkish nurses and to explore the relationships between nurses' characteristics. METHODS: This was a descriptive study of a convenience sample consisting of 269 clinical nurses. A questionnaire was used to identify socio-demographic characteristics, and the Nurses' Professional Values Scale was applied. Ethical considerations: Permission to conduct the study was received from the hospital and the Institutional Review Boards of the Süleyman Demirel University ethic committee. RESULTS: The mean scale score of the participant nurses was 165.41 ± 20.79. The results of this study revealed that human dignity was the most important professional value for nurses, and the importance attached to these values showed statistically significant differences by age, length of service, educational level, marital status, position at work, and receiving relevant in-service training. CONCLUSION: Nurses' Professional Values Scale scores showed that nurses give above average and attached importance to professional values.

RESUMEN

There is a need for an appropriate instrument to measure colleague solidarity among nurses. This study was carried out to develop a Colleague Solidarity of Nurses' Scale (CSNS). This study was planned to be descriptive and methodological. The CSNS examined content validity, construct validity, test-retest reliability and internal consistency reliability. The trial form of the CSNS, which was composed of 44 items, was given to 200 nurses, followed by validity and reliability analyses. Following the analyses, 21 items were excluded from the scale, leaving an attitude scale made up of 23 items. Factor analysis of the data showed that the scale has a three sub-factor structure: emotional solidarity, academic solidarity and negative opinions about solidarity. The Cronbach's alpha reliability of the whole scale was 0.80. This study provides evidence that the CSNS possesses robust solidarity among nurses.

RESUMEN

This paper is a report of a study to determine the nursing images of female and male nursing students. The study used a qualitative research design to determine nursing images of male (n = 20) and female (n = 20) nursing students. To analyse the data, the method used content analysis. Statements were organized under three categories and seven themes after content analysis. The first category, nursing concept, incorporates the two themes of: (i) female or sister; (ii) job definition. The second category, choosing, incorporates the four themes of: (i) Desire of Others; (ii) Guarantee of Work; (iii) Being Helpful to Others; and (iv) Limited to Academic Achievement. The third category, Gender, incorporates the one theme of: (i) Gendered Approach. Male students have started to take part in nursing programs relatively recently; therefore, more research is needed in the fields of academic accomplishments of male students.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the predisposing factors in the development of phlebitis in peripheral intravenous (IV) catheterization sites in patients treated with a variety of IV infusion solutions and drugs. DATA SOURCES: Systematic observation of 568 IV sites inserted for fluid infusion and drug administration in 355 patients in the Department of General Surgery of a University Hospital in Turkey. A data collection tool was based on standards established by the Infusion Nurses Society. Patients' infusion sites were monitored every 24 h during treatment and for 48 h after discontinuation of the IV. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to the usual findings in the literature, the authors found that infusion through an infusion pump and insertion of catheters in the veins around the elbow increased the risk of phlebitis. Also, the number of times infusions were started led to an increased rate of phlebitis. However, conflicting results were obtained about the relation between phlebitis, gender, and catheter size. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Phlebitis causes sepsis, pain, additional diagnostic investigations, and treatments, and may lead to increased duration of hospitalization, patient's stress level, and financial burden, as well as increasing staff workload. Advanced practice nurses need to be aware of the factors that increase the likelihood of phlebitis and take appropriate measures to prevent it.
