RESUMEN

Pyridinium cesium cobalt nitrate, (PyH)CsCo2(NO3)6, obtained from a nitric acid solution crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with unit cell parameters a = 8.6905(14) Å, b = 11.9599(18) Å, c = 18.386(3) Å, V = 1911.0(5) Å3, and Z = 4. It consists of [Co(NO3)3]- layers, in which each Co2+ ion is connected with four monodentate bridging NO3-groups and one bidentate terminal NO3-group, forming a corrugated rectangular net. Magnetization and specific heat measurements show that (PyH)CsCo2(NO3)6 undergoes a long-range canted antiferromagnetic ordering in two steps at TC1 = 5.0 K and TC2 = 2.6 K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the field dependence of the magnetization measured for (PyH)CsCo2(NO3)6 show that it is an Ising antiferromagnet. In support of these observations, our DFT + U + SOC calculations show that the Co2+ ions of (PyH)CsCo2(NO3)6 have an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy with preferred spin orientation along the b-axis. To a first approximation, the spin lattice of (PyH)CsCo2(NO3)6 is a weakly alternating Ising antiferromagnetic chain (J1/J2 ∼ 0.85), and these chains interact weakly (J3/J2 ∼ 0.07) to form a rectangular Ising antiferromagnetic lattice. In agreement with the prediction for a rectangular Ising antiferromagnet by Onsager, (PyH)CsCo2(NO3)6 undergoes a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering.

RESUMEN

We prepared a new compound, Co3(SeO3)(SeO4)(OH)2, having layers in a kagomé-like arrangement of Co2+ (spin S = 3/2) ions. This phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (62) with unit cell parameters a = 11.225(9) Å, b = 6.466(7) Å and c = 11.530(20) Å. Its layers, parallel to the ab-plane, are made up of Co1O5 square pyramids and Co2O6 and Co3O6 octahedra. As the temperature is lowered, Co3(SeO3)(SeO4)(OH)2 undergoes three successive magnetic transitions at 27.5, 19.4 and 8.1 K, and the magnetization of Co3(SeO3)(SeO4)(OH)2 measured at 2.4 K exhibits a 1/3-magnetization plateau between 7.8 and 19.9 T. The H-T magnetic phase diagram constructed for Co3(SeO3)(SeO4)(OH)2 from ac and dc magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetization measurements contains three magnetic phases I, II and III. Phase I is antiferromagnetic, while phases II and III are ferrimagnetic and responsible for the 1/3-magnetization plateau. To interpret these complex magnetic properties, we identified the correct spin lattice for Co3(SeO3)(SeO4)(OH)2 by evaluating its intralayer and interlayer spin exchanges based on spin-polarized DFT+U calculations.

RESUMEN

We prepared Cs2Cu3(SeO3)4·2H2O composed of Cu2+ ions at square-planar coordination sites and characterized its structural and magnetic properties, to show that Cs2Cu3(SeO3)4·2H2O is a ferrimagnet exhibiting a highly anisotropic 1/3-magnetization plateau. This unprecedented anisotropy in a magnetization plateau is the consequence of three effects, namely, the orthogonal arrangements of the corner-sharing CuO4 square planes, the nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic exchange, and the anisotropic g-factor of the Cu2+ ions at square-planar coordination sites. By analyzing the topology of magnetic bonding, we found why magnetic plateaus are observed only for certain ferrimagnets and antiferromagnets.

RESUMEN

A mixed-valence compound Pb2Cu10O4(SeO3)4Cl7 has a complex structure consisting of one nonmagnetic Cu+ (S = 0) ion and four nonequivalent magnetic Cu2+ (S = 1/2) ions. It exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at TN = 10.2 K. At a temperature below TN, a sequence of spin-flop transition at Bspin-flop = 1.3 T and 1/3 plateau formation at Bspin-flip = 4.4 K is observed in the magnetization curve M(B). The 1/3 magnetization plateau persists at least up to 53.5 T. The spin exchanges of Pb2Cu10O4(SeO3)4Cl7 evaluated by performing energy-mapping analysis based on DFT+U calculations show that the magnetic properties of Pb2Cu10O4(SeO3)4Cl7 are described by the (Cu2+)7 cluster of corner-sharing (Cu2+)4 tetrahedra, and that each (Cu2+)7 cluster has a S = 3/2 spin arrangement in the ground state. The 1/3 magnetization plateau observed for Pb2Cu10O4(SeO3)4Cl7 is explained by the field-induced flip of every second (Cu2+)7 cluster within a unit cell.

RESUMEN

Synthesis and characterization of structure and magnetic properties of the quasi-octahedral complex (pipH2)[Co(TDA)2] 2H2O (I), (pipH22+ = piperazine dication, TDA2- = thiodiacetic anion) are described. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the first coordination sphere of the Co(II) ion, consisting of two chelating tridentate TDA ligands with a mixed sulfur-oxygen strongly elongated octahedral coordination environment. SQUID magnetometry, frequency-domain Fourier-transform (FD-FT) THz-EPR spectroscopy, and high-level ab initio SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2 quantum chemical calculations reveal a strong "easy-plane" type magnetic anisotropy (D ≈ +54 cm-1) of complex I. The complex shows field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization at an applied DC field of 1000 Oe.

RESUMEN

Uniform quasi-one-dimensional integer spin compounds are of interest as a potential realization of the Haldane conjecture of a gapped spin liquid. This phase, however, has to compete with magnetic anisotropy and long-range ordered phases, the implementation of which depends on the ratio of interchain J' and intrachain J exchange interactions and both uniaxial D and rhombic E single-ion anisotropies. Strontium nickel selenite chloride, Sr2Ni(SeO3)2Cl2, is a spin-1 chain system which passes through a correlations regime at Tmax ~ 12 K to long-range order at TN = 6 K. Under external magnetic field it experiences the sequence of spin-flop at Bc1 = 9.0 T and spin-flip transitions Bc2 = 23.7 T prior to full saturation at Bsat = 31.0 T. Density functional theory provides values of the main exchange interactions and uniaxial anisotropy which corroborate the experimental findings. The values of J'/J = 0.083 and D/J = 0.357 place this compound into a hitherto unoccupied sector of the Sakai-Takahashi phase diagram.

RESUMEN

AIM: Determine whether bone mineral density (BMD) assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry can be used as predictor of increased risk of death in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was performed of 516 patients with chronic kidney disease treated with hemodialysis (men 265, women 251, mean age 44.811.4 years) who were observed for 5.73.2 years. Before inclusion in the study, in all patients was analyzed bone mineral density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in three standard departments: lumbar vertebrae, proximal femur and distal forearm. The probability analysis of the outcome was carried out using the KaplanMeier method and Cox. RESULTS: During follow-up period 111 (21.5%) patients died, 50.5% from cardiovascular events. Survival analysis by KaplanMeier method allowed to prove the increased risk of death from cardiovascular pathology in hemodailysis patients with low bone mineral density of all evaluated areas. Step-by-step multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the T score of the femur, showing the difference of BMD of the patient with normal value of BMD for young adult, had the greatest prognostic significance. CONCLUSION: Reduced bone mineral density in patients receiving hemodialysis is associated with an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry can be used for assessment of this risk.

RESUMEN

The coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in tantalum disulfide (2H-TaS_{2}) at low temperature is boosted by applying hydrostatic pressures to study both vibrational and magnetic transport properties. Around P_{c}, we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature T_{c}=9.1 K. First-principles calculations of the electronic structure predict that, under ambient conditions, the undistorted structure is characterized by a phonon instability at finite momentum close to the experimental CDW wave vector. Upon compression, this instability is found to disappear, indicating the suppression of CDW order. The calculations reveal an electronic topological transition (ETT), which occurs before the suppression of the phonon instability, suggesting that the ETT alone is not directly causing the structural change in the system. The temperature dependence of the first vortex penetration field has been experimentally obtained by two independent methods. While a d wave and single-gap BCS prediction cannot describe the lower critical field H_{c1} data, the temperature dependence of the H_{c1} can be well described by a single-gap anisotropic s-wave order parameter.

RESUMEN

Phase-pure orthorhombic compositions at a Ln/Mo ratio ∼ 5.2-5.7 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho) have been obtained for the first time by prolonged (40-160 h) heat treatment of mechanically activated 5Ln2O3 + 2MoO3 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho) oxide mixtures at 1200 °C. Although the starting Ln : Mo ratio was 5 : 1 (Ln10Mo2O21 (Ln = Dy, Ho)), it changed slightly in the final product due to the volatility of molybdenum oxide at 1200 °C (40-160 h) (ICP-MS analysis). Brief high-temperature firing (1600 °C, 3 h) of 5Ln2O3 + 2MoO3 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho) oxide mixtures leads to the formation of phase-pure fluorites with compositions close to Ln10Mo2O21 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho). Gd10Mo2O21 molybdate seems to undergo an order-disorder (orthorhombic-fluorite) phase transition in the range of 1200-1600 °C. For the first time, using the neutron diffraction method, it was shown that low-temperature phases with a Ln/Mo ratio ∼ 5.2-5.7 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho) have an orthorhombic structure rather than a tetragonal structure. Proton contribution to the total conductivity of Ln10Mo2O21 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho) fluorites and gadolinium and dysprosium orthorhombic phases in a wet atmosphere was observed for the first time. In both orthorhombic and fluorite phases, the total conductivity in wet air decreases with decreasing lanthanide ionic radii. In a wide temperature range, the compounds under study exhibit paramagnetic behaviour. However, the orthorhombic phases of Dy and Ho compounds reach the antiferromagnetic state at 2.4 K and 2.6 K, respectively.

RESUMEN

Ion-exchange treatment of Na2SnTeO6 in molten salt mixtures resulted in rosiaite (PbSb2O6)-related MnSnTeO6. Its crystal structure was refined by the Rietveld method. Of the three possible models of Sn/Te distribution, the disordered model (P3[combining macron]1m, a = 5.23093(11) Å, c = 4.62430(16) Å) was preferred based on bond distances. However, it is supposed that each individual (SnTeO6)2- layer retains complete ordering of the precursor and the apparent disorder is only due to stacking faults. Magnetic studies have shown that MnSnTeO6 orders antiferromagnetically at Neél temperature TN = 9.8 K. The effective magnetic moment reasonably agrees with theoretical estimations assuming high-spin configuration of Mn2+ (S = 5/2). Electron spin resonance reveals spin dynamics in accordance with antiferromagnetic ordering. Moreover, critical broadening of ESR linewidth indicates the low-dimensional type of exchange interactions. Based on the temperature and field-dependent magnetization studies, the magnetic phase diagram of the new compound was constructed.

RESUMEN

MSb2O6 compounds (M = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) are known in the tetragonal trirutile forms, slightly distorted monoclinically with M = Cu due to the Jahn-Teller effect. In this study, using a low-temperature exchange reaction between ilmenite-type NaSbO3 and molten MSO4-KCl (or MgCl2-KCl) mixtures, these five compositions were prepared for the first time as trigonal layered rosiaite (PbSb2O6)-type phases. Upon heating, they irreversibly transform to the known phases via amorphous intermediates, in contrast to previously studied isostructural MnSb2O6, where the stable phase is structurally related to the metastable phase. The same method was found to be applicable for preparing stable rosiaite-type CdSb2O6. The formula volumes of the new phases show an excellent correlation with the ionic radii (except for M = Cu, for which a Jahn-Teller distortion is suspected) and are 2-3% larger than those for the known forms although all coordination numbers are the same. The crystal structure of CoSb2O6 was refined via the Rietveld method: P3[combining macron]1m, a = 5.1318(3) Å, and c = 4.5520(3) Å. Compounds with M = Co and Ni antiferromagnetically order at 11 and 15 K, respectively, whereas the copper compound does not show long-range magnetic order down to 1.5 K. A comparison between the magnetic behavior of the metastable and stable polymorphs was carried out. FeSb2O6 could not be prepared because of the 2Fe2+ + Sb5+ = 2Fe3+ + Sb3+ redox reaction. This electron transfer produces an additional 5s2 shell for Sb and results in a volume increase. A comparison of the formula volume for the stable mixture FeSbO4 + 0.5Sb2O4 with that extrapolated for FeSb2O6 predicted that the trirutile-type FeSb2O6 can be stabilized at high pressures.

RESUMEN

FeSe exhibits a novel ground state in which superconductivity coexists with a nematic order in the absence of any long-range magnetic order. Here, we report on an angle-resolved photoemission study on the superconducting gap structure in the nematic state of FeSe_{0.93}S_{0.07}, without the complications caused by Fermi surface reconstruction induced by magnetic order. We find that the superconducting gap shows a pronounced twofold anisotropy around the elliptical hole pocket near Z (0, 0, π), with gap minima at the end points of its major axis, while no detectable gap is observed around Γ (0, 0, 0) and the zone corner (π, π, k_{z}). The large anisotropy and nodal gap distribution demonstrate the substantial effects of the nematicity on the superconductivity and thus put strong constraints on current theories.

RESUMEN

Elucidating the nature of the magnetism of a high-temperature superconductor is crucial for establishing its pairing mechanism. The parent compounds of the cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors exhibit Néel and stripe magnetic order, respectively. However, FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, shows nematic order (Ts=90 K), but not magnetic order in the parent phase, and its magnetic ground state is intensely debated. Here we report inelastic neutron-scattering experiments that reveal both stripe and Néel spin fluctuations over a wide energy range at 110 K. On entering the nematic phase, a substantial amount of spectral weight is transferred from the Néel to the stripe spin fluctuations. Moreover, the total fluctuating magnetic moment of FeSe is ∼60% larger than that in the iron pnictide BaFe2As2. Our results suggest that FeSe is a novel S=1 nematic quantum-disordered paramagnet interpolating between the Néel and stripe magnetic instabilities.

RESUMEN

We report the revised crystal structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of quasi-two dimensional honeycomb-lattice silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data are consistent with the onset of antiferromagnetic long range order at low temperatures with Néel temperature TN ∼ 21.2 K. In addition, the magnetization curves revealed a field-induced (spin-flop type) transition below TN in moderate magnetic fields. The GGA+U calculations show the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom, which maintain a hierarchy of exchange interaction in the system. The strongest antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was found in the shortest Co-Co pairs and is due to direct and superexchange interaction between the half-filled xz + yz orbitals pointing directly to each other. The other four out of six nearest neighbor exchanges within the cobalt hexagon are suppressed, since for these bonds the active half-filled orbitals turned out to be parallel and do not overlap. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra reveal a broad absorption line attributed to the Co(2+) ion in an octahedral coordination with an average effective g-factor g = 2.40 ± 0.05 at room temperature and show strong divergence of the ESR parameters below ∼150 K, which implies an extended region of short-range correlations. Based on the results of magnetic and thermodynamic studies in applied fields, we propose a magnetic phase diagram for the new honeycomb-lattice delafossite.

RESUMEN

Excitation energy transfer (EET) is observed in hybrid structures that composed of allophycocyanin and CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dot (QD). We demonstrate that the EET efficiency in such systems could be significantly increased under conditions inducing monomerization of allophycocyanin trimers. For these purposes, the EET efficiency was estimated under different experimental conditions (pH, high temperature or the presence of NaSCN) for self-assembled hybrid structures. Additionally, the hybrid structures were stabilized by covalent coupling which resulted in approximately 20-fold enhancement of allophycocyanin fluorescence upon excitation of QDs. The observed effect provides new opportunities for the practical implementation of hybrid systems as fluorescent markers.

RESUMEN

Crystalline silicon (Si) nanoparticles present an extremely promising object for bioimaging based on photoluminescence (PL) in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions, but their efficient PL emission in aqueous suspension is typically observed after wet chemistry procedures leading to residual toxicity issues. Here, we introduce ultrapure laser-synthesized Si-based quantum dots (QDs), which are water-dispersible and exhibit bright exciton PL in the window of relative tissue transparency near 800 nm. Based on the laser ablation of crystalline Si targets in gaseous helium, followed by ultrasound-assisted dispersion of the deposited films in physiological saline, the proposed method avoids any toxic by-products during the synthesis. We demonstrate efficient contrast of the Si QDs in living cells by following the exciton PL. We also show that the prepared QDs do not provoke any cytoxicity effects while penetrating into the cells and efficiently accumulating near the cell membrane and in the cytoplasm. Combined with the possibility of enabling parallel therapeutic channels, ultrapure laser-synthesized Si nanostructures present unique object for cancer theranostic applications.

RESUMEN

FeSe layer-based superconductors exhibit exotic and distinctive properties. The undoped FeSe shows nematicity and superconductivity, while the heavily electron-doped KxFe2-ySe2 and single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 possess high superconducting transition temperatures that pose theoretical challenges. However, a comprehensive study on the doping dependence of an FeSe layer-based superconductor is still lacking due to the lack of a clean means of doping control. Through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on K-dosed thick FeSe films and FeSe0.93S0.07 bulk crystals, here we reveal the internal connections between these two types of FeSe-based superconductors, and obtain superconductivity below ∼ 46 K in an FeSe layer under electron doping without interfacial effects. Moreover, we discover an exotic phase diagram of FeSe with electron doping, including a nematic phase, a superconducting dome, a correlation-driven insulating phase and a metallic phase. Such an anomalous phase diagram unveils the remarkable complexity, and highlights the importance of correlations in FeSe layer-based superconductors.

RESUMEN

In iron-based superconductors the interactions driving the nematic order (that breaks four-fold rotational symmetry in the iron plane) may also mediate the Cooper pairing. The experimental determination of these interactions, which are believed to depend on the orbital or the spin degrees of freedom, is challenging because nematic order occurs at, or slightly above, the ordering temperature of a stripe magnetic phase. Here, we study FeSe (ref. )-which exhibits a nematic (orthorhombic) phase transition at Ts = 90 K without antiferromagnetic ordering-by neutron scattering, finding substantial stripe spin fluctuations coupled with the nematicity that are enhanced abruptly on cooling through Ts. A sharp spin resonance develops in the superconducting state, whose energy (∼4 meV) is consistent with an electron-boson coupling mode revealed by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. The magnetic spectral weight in FeSe is found to be comparable to that of the iron arsenides. Our results support recent theoretical proposals that both nematicity and superconductivity are driven by spin fluctuations.

RESUMEN

Highly homogeneous mullite-type solid solutions Bi2Fe(4-x)CrxO9 (x = 0.5, 1, 1.2) were synthesized using a soft chemistry technique followed by a solid-state reaction in Ar. The crystal structure of Bi2Fe3CrO9 was investigated using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy (S.G. Pbam, a = 7.95579(9) Å, b = 8.39145(9) Å, c = 5.98242(7) Å, RF(X-ray) = 0.022, RF(neutron) = 0.057). The ab planes in the structure are tessellated with distorted pentagonal loops built up by three tetrahedrally coordinated Fe sites and two octahedrally coordinated Fe/Cr sites, linked together in the ab plane by corner-sharing forming a pentagonal Cairo lattice. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and powder neutron diffraction show that the compounds order antiferromagnetically (AFM) with the Néel temperatures decreasing upon increasing the Cr content from TN ∼ 250 K for x = 0 to TN ∼ 155 K for x = 1.2. The magnetic structure of Bi2Fe3CrO9 at T = 30 K is characterized by a propagation vector k = (1/2,1/2,1/2). The tetrahedrally coordinated Fe cations form singlet pairs within dimers of corner-sharing tetrahedra, but spins on the neighboring dimers are nearly orthogonal. The octahedrally coordinated (Fe,Cr) cations form antiferromagnetic up-up-down-down chains along c, while the spin arrangement in the ab plane is nearly orthogonal between nearest neighbors and collinear between second neighbors. The resulting magnetic structure is remarkably different from the one in pure Bi2Fe4O9 and features several types of spin correlations even on crystallographically equivalent exchange that may be caused by the simultaneous presence of Fe and Cr on the octahedral site.
