Diabetes is a major economic burden and an illness with a rising incidence worldwide. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the most prevalent kind of diabetes, is characterized by insulin resistance and insufficient insulin production. Recent research has implicated gut microbiota dysbiosis as a contributing factor to T2DM pathogenesis. The present study employed a methodology based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the therapeutic efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of T2DM. A thorough search was done in PubMed and Medline for articles written in English and published between 2017 and 2023. Studies were chosen based on predetermined inclusion criteria, and the search technique adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) principles. This study also employed a robust assessment instrument, widely recognized in the medical and health sciences, to evaluate the potential presence of bias within the selected research studies. Out of 96 identified articles, 22 RCTs met the eligibility criteria. Both short-term (8 weeks or less) and long-term (12 weeks or more) probiotic administrations were made. The results of the meta-analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) following the probiotic intervention (P=0.02) and considerably decreased glycated hemoglobin HbA1c levels (P=0.004) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels (P<0.0001) in T2DM patients compared to placebo. This research offers proof that probiotics are clinically effective in the treatment of T2DM. Probiotic supplementation demonstrated favorable effects on glycemic control markers. However, the findings from RCTs were heterogeneous, and some studies showed inconsistent results. To clarify the processes underlying the probiotics' therapeutic benefits and to determine the best probiotic strains, doses, and therapy durations, more research is required. Nevertheless, probiotics offer a promising therapeutic approach for T2DM management and warrant consideration as a potential adjunct therapy in clinical practice.

Stent thrombosis (ST) is a rare but catastrophic event to happen to a stented coronary artery. The incidence of ST has greatly been reduced after the advent of modern drug-eluting stent (DES) implants, which have become the most preferred treatment option in the stenting category for coronary artery disease (CAD). Although the risk reduction by newer category implant provides substantial benefits, the possibility of thrombosis still exists mostly during the early stage of DES implantation. The development of ST after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can be predicted by multiple factors, but advancements in early diagnostic techniques and modified stent types have greatly reduced the occurrence of this complication. Mortality, which is one of the complications of ST, is primarily influenced by patient-related factors such as incomplete treatment duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). The duration of DAPT after DES implantation in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is determined based on individual characteristics, mainly considered in view of bleeding or ischemia risk. Risk evaluation systems like DAPT/precise-DAPT scores help tailor and personalize the duration of DAPT for each individual patient. This systematic review contains pertinent articles extracted from the PubMed database. We retrieved articles from various study categories, encompassing publications from the period spanning 2014 to 2022. Our analysis highlighted results from studies investigating different aspects contributing to ST development. The most favorable prevention option was the use of customized DAPT intervention based on patient-specific predictable factors. Several complications associated with ST were identified, including recurrent ST, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) encompassing all-cause mortality (including cardiac and non-cardiac mortality), cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) or transient ischemic attacks (TIA), hospitalization due to heart failure, and myocardial infarction requiring revascularization. Mortality was also observed as a significant outcome. The umbrella term of ST includes multiple causative factors. Although DES has improved patient survival rates vastly with its usage, careful risk factor assessment and required follow-up, in each individual being stented, further guarantee a more promising reduction in late adverse outcomes.

Schizophrenia is a chronic debilitating condition associated with impaired social functioning, memory, and executive functioning. To date, we are still unsure about the exact etiology of schizophrenia, but there are many factors, such as genetics, diminished hippocampal volume, and imbalance of neurotransmitters, that lead to the pathogenies of the disease. Antipsychotics are the most effective treatment option for schizophrenia so far, yet they are associated with a wide array of side effects, ranging from extrapyramidal side effects to conditions, such as metabolic syndrome. Exercise has been shown to increase neural connections in the brain, which can improve cognition and memory. This literature review focuses on the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia, its treatment options, and how exercise can help with some of the symptoms of schizophrenia, especially the negative symptoms that are least effectively treated by antipsychotics.

Autoimmune diseases manifest in genetically predisposed individuals exposed to certain triggers that aggravate immune dysfunction and result in an exacerbated immune response in the form of hyperactivity to both the humoral and cell-mediated response. The devastating reality apart from the severity of the disease is that multiple immune diseases could co-occur, increasing the patient's physical, psychological, and financial burden. Autoimmune diseases are utterly deranging. One of the dreadful autoimmune diseases is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). SLE is a rheumatological disease that affects multiple systems, and there are no predictors to know which system will be affected in the future. It could affect the mucocutaneous system. It could also present with hematological, rheumatological, neuronal, renal, pulmonary, and cardiac manifestations. SLE is prevalent in females, predominantly in the childbearing age group. The pharmacological therapy and bombarding pathophysiology of the disease lead to obstetrical and gynecological complications such as infertility, abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirth. Over the past decade, the autoimmune disease comorbidity increased eminently. One of the common associations is rheumatological diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren syndrome, and SLE) with gynecological diseases (e.g., endometriosis and uterine fibroids). SLE and endometriosis have strong associations, and the prevalence of each condition is relatively high among the female population. Endometriosis is a chronic disease triggered by inflammation, hormonal milieu, and other predisposing factors that lead to the fibrous tissue that lines the uterus (endometrial tissue) to be implanted at sites other than the uterus, commonly in the peritoneum and mesentery. The pathogenesis of this association remains unexplained. The approved theory is that their immune dysfunction is summarized by the elevated humoral and cell-mediated response, which leads to an attack to the epithelium, mesothelium, and Serosa and leads to fibrous tissue deposition in different sites other than the uterus. Statistical evaluations have shown a remarkable association between autoimmune diseases and both gynecological and nongynecological diseases.

Obesity is highly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), both of which can be simultaneously treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). There are many antidiabetic drugs that can be used for the treatment of T2DM. These drugs have vast modes of action and therapeutic uses. However, they also have different side effects. Some of these side effects, such as weight changes, are sometimes desirable while others are not. This review examines the literature on how GLP-1RA affects both blood glucose and body weight in patients with T2DM and obesity. In this context, GLP-1RA plays a critical part by controlling not only the blood glucose level but also weight. We followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines and searched for articles from PubMed and Google Scholar databases that reported on T2DM, obesity, and GLP-1RA functions. We selected 13 articles that showed the benefits of GLP-1RA in managing both T2DM and obesity. Our review suggests that GLP-1RA is an innovative therapy that can address both conditions simultaneously.

The purpose of this article is to review the existing English scientific literature and determine the superior modality between transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radioembolization (TARE) in the treatment of neuroendocrine liver metastases (NELMs). To that end, we followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to search PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. We identified 14 observational studies and no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the use of TACE or TARE to treat NELM. We used the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale to assess the risk of bias in these studies. We concluded that TACE and TARE appeared to have similar outcomes when comparing overall survival, progression-free survival, radiological response, symptomatic response, and the incidence of severe adverse events. Further large-scale RCTs are needed to identify the superior modality conclusively. We also identified several unique prognostic factors for overall survival, such as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, volumetric multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging, serum albumin, alkaline phosphatase, and pancreastatin.

Diabetes is associated with different types of cancers of which hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one among them. In a study comparing patients with diabetes to those who do not have diabetes, it was evident that the risk of HCC is found to increase two-fold in diabetic than that in non-diabetic patients. It is clear that carcinogenesis is advanced due to diabetes in the liver by a variety of mechanisms. We searched PubMed and Google Scholar for articles from 2010 to 2021 that have an association between diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and HCC. For the development of HCC, diabetes is likely related at both the molecular and epidemiological levels. Both diabetes mellitus and hepatic malignancy have the worst impact on mankind socioeconomically. There is a significant relationship between diabetes and HCC independent of alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis. It is noteworthy that not only the elderly but also people of all age groups should monitor their hemoglobin A1C levels. Diet restriction and lifestyle modification can reduce the risk of complications like HCC; the increased physical activity itself can have a major influence on health and can manage comorbidities like diabetes, NAFLD, and HCC.

Diabetes is one of the most well-known and well-researched non-communicable diseases known to humankind. The goal of this article is to show that the prevalence of diabetes is constantly increasing among indigenous people, a major population subgroup in Canada. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to conduct this systematic review, and the databases used were PubMed and Google Scholar. Studies that were published in the last 15 years (2007-2022) were selected for this review, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, screening, and removing duplicates, 10 articles were selected for the final review - three qualitative studies, three observational studies, and four studies without a specified methodology. We used the JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute) checklist, NOS (Newcastle-Ottawa Scale) checklist, and SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review) checklist for quality assessment. We found that all the articles showed that the prevalence of diabetes is increasing in all the Aboriginal communities despite all the interventional programs already in place. Rigorous health plans, health education, and wellness clinics for primary prevention can all be effective in reducing the potential risks of diabetes. More studies exploring the prevalence, effects, and outcomes of diabetes in the indigenous population of Canada are needed to effectively understand the disease and its complications in this group.

Breast cancer has become one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, and researchers have struggled to explore new avenues for managing it for decades. One of the ways was to analyze the diet and its importance concerning this disease. This review aims to study the effect dietary fat has on the risk of breast cancer incidence as well as its influence on the survival of breast cancer patients. The main population under consideration for this review is women older than the age of 18. A thorough and detailed search was conducted until July 21, 2022, using four databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and The Cochrane Library. After screening, 22 articles were selected for inclusion in this review. Of the 22 articles, 12 were from PubMed, two from ScienceDirect, one from The Cochrane Library, and seven from Google Scholar. The risk of bias was assessed, and the required information was extracted from the articles. A systematic review of all the included articles found a significant correlation between dietary fat and an increased risk of breast cancer development and worsening the prognosis for patients already diagnosed with breast cancer. Although many overlapping factors may be responsible for this development, studies show a trend that suggests that this particular factor can be a contributor. Further studies need to be conducted to highlight the role of fat in the diet and the use of dietary modification to curb breast cancer rates.

Alzheimer's, a neurodegenerative disease that starts slowly and worsens progressively, is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Recent studies have linked the brain with the gut and its microbiota through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, opening the door for gut-modifying agents (e.g., prebiotics and probiotics) to influence our brain's cognitive function. This review aims to identify and summarize the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) as a gut-microbiota-modifying agent on the progressive symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This systematic review is based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. A systematic search was done using Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, and ScienceDirect databases in June 2022. The predefined criteria upon which the studies were selected are English language, past 10 years of narrative reviews, observational studies, case reports, and animal studies involving Alzheimer's subjects as no previous meta-analysis or systematic reviews were done on this subject. Later, a quality assessment was done using the available assessment tool based on each study type. The initial search generated 4,302 studies, yielding 13 studies to be included in the final selection: 1 cohort, 2 case reports, 2 animal studies, and 8 narrative reviews. Our results showed that FMT positively affected AD subjects (whether mice or humans). In humans, the FMT effect was measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), showing improvement in Alzheimer's symptoms of mood, memory, and cognition. However, randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials are essential for more conclusive results.

Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most prevalent and dangerous cardiovascular diseases worldwide. Recently, its direct or indirect association with gut dysbiosis has been an interest of study for many. It also includes the metabolomic and functional gene changes in hypertensives compared with healthy individuals. This systematic review aims to study quantitative and qualitative interactions between the two and re-defining the heart-gut axis. We have strictly followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), 2020, guidelines. We conducted an in-depth search of databases such as PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Medline, and ScienceDirect to find relevant studies for our topic of interest. After the final quality check, we included eight articles in the systematic review. A significant difference in richness and diversity in gut microbiota was observed in hypertensive patients compared with healthy controls. There was an increased abundance of many bacteria such as Catabacter, Robinsoleilla, Serratia, Enterobacteriaceae, Ruminococcus torques, Parasutterella, Escherichia, Shigella, and Klebsiella, while a decreased abundance of Sporobacter, Roseburia hominis, Romboutsia spp., and Roseburia. Alteration of the composition also varied based on diet, age, ethnicity, and severity of HTN. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing bacteria are found to be on the lower side in hypertensives owing to the protective property of SCFAs against inflammation, especially butyric acid. From the perspective of metabolomic changes, harmful metabolites for cardiovascular health such as intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP), lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), zonulin, sphingomyelins, acylcarnitines, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) were found to be increased in hypertensives. Changes in these biomarkers further establish the relation between gut epithelial health and high blood pressure (BP). Participants affected by diseases have an overall lower rate of acquiring new genes, which results in a low richness of genes in them compared with healthy individuals. There is increased expression of the choline utilization (cutC) gene and reduced expression of genes associated with biosynthesis and transport of amino acids in high-BP participants. The unique changes in the composition of the microbiota, functional changes in genes, and metabolome collectively help for a better understanding of the pathogenesis of HTN and also suggest the gut as a promising new therapeutic target for HTN. To establish a further causal relationship between the two, more research is required.

The major cause of death in the United States is heart disease. The global burden of illness and mortality from heart failure is substantial. Despite recent innovations in the treatment of heart failure, the prognosis is still poor. To identify, evaluate, and summarize the findings of all relevant studies of a drug that is equally efficacious but rather cost-effective, empagliflozin compared to the other sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors was studied. It is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), acts by preventing the reabsorption of glucose from the kidney, and exhibits promising advantages in heart failure. We systematically explored PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies related to cardiovascular and renal outcomes of empagliflozin in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). After performing scoping search and search strategy, studies were screened for quality assessment using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. We screened 60 articles by titles, abstract, and exclusion and inclusion criteria, after which eight final randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 18,659 participants treated with empagliflozin and placebo were used for the systematic review. This systematic review's objective is to investigate and explore the full range of empagliflozin's effects and advantages on cardiac structure, function, and hemodynamics and renal function in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (EF) in order to better understand the drug's effects and related mechanisms.

Septic shock is one of the life-threatening emergencies in hospital settings. Patients with septic shock have been treated with various vasopressors alone as a first-line or in combination with other agents to improve blood pressure and increase the chance of survival. Our study focuses particularly on the efficacy and safety of vasopressin (VP) alone and in combination with other vasopressors. Our study used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, 2020 to do our systematic review. We searched thoroughly for articles in PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Medline, and ScienceDirect. To locate all pertinent papers, we employed the medical subject headings (MeSH) systematic search technique. Twelve papers that were related to the study's issue and passed the quality check were extracted after we applied inclusion/exclusion criteria and reviewed the titles and abstracts. We used a variety of assessment methods for diverse study designs as a quality check. We compared all included studies after reviewing them thoroughly. VP and its synthetic variants (Terlipressin and Selepressin) have always been given as adjuvants to catecholamine, especially with Noradrenaline, in low to moderate doses with continuous infusion in patients with septic shock. Furthermore, VP is a better adjuvant agent than Dopamine and Dobutamine. Though VP has been proven superior to other vasopressors as an adjuvant agent in patients with septic shock, it can cause digital ischemia in high doses.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is an uncommon chronic coagulation disorder whose underlying etiology is not yet fully understood. It predominantly affects females, especially those in late adolescence. There is currently limited research on treatment options for those with this diagnosis. The present systematic review aims to compare the efficacy of rivaroxaban and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy in the treatment of livedoid vasculopathy. A detailed search was conducted from April 20, 2022, to May 1, 2022, using four databases: Elsevier, Medline Complete, Medline Ovid, and PubMed. Out of these, 20 relevant articles were used, and the data was extracted and analyzed. Both rivaroxaban and IVIG were shown to be effective treatment options with similar treatment response times. However, future large-scale clinical trials are needed to determine an established treatment regimen for these patients.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent chronic gastrointestinal diseases, which is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. The pathophysiological mechanisms are not completely clear for IBS, multiple factors such as genetic, psychosocial, environmental, visceral hypersensitivity, low-grade inflammation, gastrointestinal motility changes, food components, and intestinal microbiota are thought to play a role in the disease process of IBS. The rapid progression of recent microbiome research using advanced microbiological technologies has shed light on dysbiosis related to the pathophysiology of IBS. We used PubMed, PubMed Central, and Medline as our primary databases to search for articles using keywords and medical subject heading (MeSH) keywords on April 30, 2022, to render a total of 4062 articles. Then, a total of 10 articles were selected following a quality assessment. Despite the variable findings in different studies, most studies have concluded that IBS patients have a reduction in bacterial diversity and an increase in the temporal instability of the microbiota. IBS is known as a stress disorder, and the gut-microbiome-brain axis has been associated with the pathogenesis of the disease. Additionally, the potential of dietary manipulation of gut microbiota and the use of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics in the treatment of IBS has been studied in recent years and shown promising results. We concluded that the gut microbiome plays a substantial role in the pathophysiology of IBS.

Leakage of the anastomotic site is considered to be one of the most serious complications after colon and rectal surgery. It is associated with increased mortality, morbidity, and longer hospital stays. This systematic review examines the need for blood markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), albumin, and various other molecular markers that assist in their propensity to diagnose anastomotic leakage (AL) early after surgery. Utilizing PubMed and Google Scholar as resources and including the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for the articles, and studies over the last five years were included. A total of 12 studies have been discussed, and most articles suggest CRP as an excellent indicator. CRP compared to Dutch leakage scores (DLS) and PCT studies suggest that the three combinations improve the predictable outcome of AL. In addition, CRP and PCT have been shown to diagnose AL early in the postoperative period. Other studies include the role of markers of oxidative stress markers, Interleukin-6, Interleukin-10, and other molecular markers in the peritoneal drain which are predictive for identifying AL after three days postoperatively (POD-3). Overall, CRP has proven to be a reliable standard indicator of diagnosis. This is because the postoperative elevation of this protein indicates a problem of leakage with clinical symptoms. Other blood parameters are useful for diagnosis as well, but the limitations are the lack of appropriate studies and the number of randomized controlled trials in this area of ​​study.

In the last two decades, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has attracted considerable interest in the research field and clinical applications because of its capacity to induce adequate electric current non-invasively for depolarizing cortex networks and superficial axons. Notably, the interest in TMS has been due to its ability to be utilized in exploring brain functioning. Indeed, reports have pointed out that TMS may effectively be used as a diagnostic and therapeutic approach for many neuropsychiatric diseases. However, they have not been sufficiently conclusive on the topic, with evidence showing mixed results. Against this backdrop, this systematic review explores TMS as a therapy option for neurologic diseases and psychiatric disorders. It summarizes and illustrates the current therapeutic uses of TMS in adults and children for detecting and treating neuropsychiatric conditions and prospective future applications. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, findings show that TMS is viable and has neuro-modulatory potential that can be employed successfully as a therapy alternative for neuropsychiatric disorders. Conversely, it is essential to more deeply understand the underlying mechanisms, alongside stimulation protocol optimization, of TMS for more practical applications.

Fistula-in-ano is a common proctological condition that primarily affects younger people and leads to chronic morbidity. An anal fistula is divided into simple and complex fistulas. A complex fistula is a challenging problem due to higher recurrence rates and incontinence associated with surgery. Many new methods have been developed for the closure of complex fistula-in-ano, but there is no single best method. The aim of this study is to identify a superior surgical technique for treating complex/high cryptoglandular perianal fistulas (HCPFs). A literature search was done using PubMed and Google Scholar for the period of 2012-2021. Articles that contain surgical treatment for complex anal fistula in the English language published in the last 10 years were included. The types of studies included were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), meta-analyses, systematic reviews, cohort studies, and traditional reviews. Articles excluded were those done more than 10 years ago, in other languages, and containing simple fistula management only. Nine studies were included in the review; a systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that no single method is effective. The ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) procedure seems to be a promising and effective technique as it has a low rate of fecal incontinence as compared to other methods. Biological techniques give variable success rates so does fistula plug (FP). Mucosal advancement flap (MAF) and rerouting seton give good results according to one study. Fistula plug gives variable results and is not a preferred method. Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) seems to be a promising new technique for complex anal fistulas, but the data available is not enough to determine the best method. More randomized trials are required to compare traditional techniques and emerging new biological methods to see the best technique available.

A tumor extends its effects beyond its local site, and one such effect is cancer cachexia which is caused by a state of systemic inflammation in response to cancer. Though the prominent effect of cancer cachexia is seen on skeletal muscles, it shows deterioration in other organs' smooth muscle, adipose tissue, blood, bone marrow, liver, and immunity. Interleukin (IL)-6 plays an imminent role along with tissue necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1 beta, interferon-gamma, myostatin, adiponectin, growth differentiation factor-15, activin A, etc. These cytokines through nuclear factor-kappa beta, mitogen-activated protein kinase, suppressor of mothers against decapentaplegic, and Janus activated kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway activate genes inducing ubiquitin-proteosome system and reactive oxidative species. Apart from these, they participate in causing anemia and immunosuppression. Adipose tissue acts as a source of cytokines and place of action of cytokines leading to lipolysis. Moreover, these cytokines act at the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis change metabolism and add to anorexia which already exists in cancer patients. The involvement of multiple cytokines necessitates the development and testing of anti-cytokines in combinations.

Eculizumab, first-line therapy for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), has infectious side effects in addition to its therapeutic benefits. This study aims to discuss the mechanism of development of infections, prevention, and timely treatment to prevent complications such as septic shock and mortality. The study was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklist and reporting guidelines for systematic review. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined. A total of 10 research papers were extracted after exploring Pubmed and Google Scholar from 2001 to 2021. The New Castle Ottawa Questionnaire for non-randomized clinical trials and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) quality assessment tool for case reports and case series were used to assess the risk of bias. The studies included in this systematic review describe infections with Neisseria meningitidis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, unusual Neisseria species, Moraxella lacunata, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The main goal of this review is to impress upon the seriousness of the infectious complications associated with eculizumab. Health care providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for early identification and treatment.
