Reduced work/academic performance and quality of life in patients with allergic rhinitis and impact of allergen immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterised by burdensome nasal and/or ocular symptoms. This inflammatory disease can be debilitating and thus result in considerable health-related and economic consequences. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, adult subjects with AR (N = 683) completed three allergy-specific questionnaires that assessed the impact of AR on the work/academic performance, daily activities, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and satisfaction with allergen immunotherapy (AIT). Regression analyses were used to examine the associations between several clinical variables and the patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS: Total loss of productivity was 21.0 and 21.2 % for employed and student patients, respectively, whereas the impairment of daily activities was 22.0 %. The mean overall HRQOL score was 1.94 ± 1.29 (on the scale of 0-6 points). Global score for satisfaction with AIT was 65.5 ± 24.8 (on a 0-100 scale). Simple regression analysis found statistically significant associations between loss of work and academic productivity, impairment of daily activities and the type and severity of AR. AIT was a protective factor. The persistent and more severe types of AR and lack of AIT contributed to the worsening of HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS: AR (the persistent and more severe form of the disease) has an impact on functional characteristics of adult patients in Spain. AIT might reduce the effect of this disease on the work/academic performance and HRQOL. Trial registration Retrospectively registered.

Improvement of ligand economy controlled by polymer morphology: the case of polymer-supported bis(oxazoline) catalysts.

A functionalized chiral bis(oxazoline) is used as a chiral monomer in polymerization reactions leading to homo- and copolymers of different morphology. Polymers with a high content of chiral monomer lead to enantioselectivities that are higher than those obtained with the soluble ligand, but the chiral ligand is not used in an optimal way. A hyperbranched polymer, obtained by using a hexavinyldendrimer as the cross-linker, leads to the same enantioselectivities with a more efficient use of the chiral ligand.

Synthesis, characterization, and optical response of dipolar and non-dipolar poly(phenylenevinylene) dendrimers.

New dipolar and non-dipolar poly(phenylenevinylene) dendrimers bearing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups have been efficiently synthesized using Heck and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions. The photoluminescence of these systems may be tuned in the blue zone by choosing the appropriate peripheral groups. Despite the meta-substitution pattern, large Stokes shifts can be observed when pi-donor and pi-acceptor groups are connected by a m-phenylenevinylene system.

Apparent late-onset Cockayne syndrome and interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 10 (del(10)(q11.23q21.2)).

We present the history and data on a 24-year-old man with clinical and neurological symptoms similar to the findings in patients with late-onset Cockayne syndrome. Prometaphase chromosome studies documented an interstitial 10q211 deletion in all cells. This finding may indicate that the gene for late Cockayne syndrome is at 10q211.
