RESUMEN

Cryopreservation of goat spermatozoa is challenging due to several factors, including one of the most essential, i.e., oxidative stress. It is particularly essential in goat semen due to its scanty ejaculate volume and high sperm concentration. This leaves a narrow sperm-to-seminal plasma ratio owing to marginal antioxidant support; moreover, semen extension further dilutes the antioxidant level, leading to an imbalance of oxidant-antioxidant equilibrium. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of quercetin on curtailing oxidative stress and its reflection on the post-thaw survivability and membrane integrity of goat spermatozoa. For this study, six bucks were selected. Six ejaculates from each buck totaling 36 ejaculates were collected, which were then split into five parts; furthermore, each part was added with a semen extender having a particular concentration of additive. Group C without quercetin and T1 containing Vit E at 3 mmol/mL were considered the control and positive control respectively, whereas T2, T3, and T4 contain 10, 20, and 30 µmol/mL of Quercetin respectively. The final sperm concentration of each group was kept at 200×106 spermatozoa/mL. All groups were subjected to equilibration at 4 °C for 4 hours, then filled in French mini (0.25 mL) straws, followed by sealing and cryopreservation. Samples after 72 hours of cryopreservation were subjected to evaluation of plasma membrane integrity and viability through staining, acrosomal integrity, and mitochondrial membrane activity through flowcytometry. Evaluation of sperm kinematics as well as the oxidant-antioxidant status of sperm (ROS and nitric oxide) and seminal plasma (SOD, CAT, GPx, FRAP, and lipid peroxidation through MDA estimation) were also carried out. Quercetin, when supplemented at 20 µmol/mL in buck semen extender, significantly (p<0.01) improved cryopreserved sperm functions in terms of plasma membrane integrity, viability, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial membrane activity, and sperm kinematics of buck semen. Similarly, Quercetin supplementation at 20 µmol/mL significantly reduced reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in sperm and improved the antioxidant status of seminal plasma, which was indicated by reduced oxidative damage and improved the antioxidant status of buck semen. In conclusion, Quercetin at 20 µmol/mL reduced oxidative stress, improved semen antioxidant status, and improved sperm membrane integrity and kinematics.

INTRODUCTION: There is need for employing strategies to minimize measurement errors while administering semi-quantitative FFQ. The current study was planned to adapt and standardize locally available portion sizes for semi-quantitative FFQ to improve its validity and document the process of standardization of portion sizes. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in 9 villages of the INCLEN-SOMAARTH DDESS (Demographic, Development and Environmental Surveillance Site), Palwal district, Haryana, India. The subjects in these nine villages are part of a cohort study to assess the interaction between societal and household factors with food intake and physical activity of children. Systematic utensil survey was undertaken in 3 randomly chosen households per village i.e. 27 households and the portion sizes were derived from a total of 74 serving utensils. The derived sizes were classified as small (240 ml), medium (320 ml) and large (600 ml). The semi-quantitative FFQ with locally derived portion sizes was then administered to 63 children in 6-12 year age group. RESULTS: The volume of food measured by the reference portion sizes generally being employed in the national surveys, would have been underestimated the food consumed by the child by 55-60% as compared to what was being consumed by the children in the study area. The correlation between food intake assessed by 24-hr recall method and FFQ using derived (local) portion sizes was better as compared to that obtained with the semi-quantitative FFQ done with reference portions. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, local portion size adaptation of FFQ for semi-quantification is useful to mitigate measurement errors associated with this technique.

RESUMEN

Complex odontomas, hamartomas of aborted tooth development, mainly occur in posterior part of the mandible and rarely erupt into the oral cavity. The spontaneous eruption may be associated with pain, inflammation of adjacent soft tissues or recurrent infection. The present case of complex odontoma is of particular interest due to its apparent eruption in the maxillary posterior segment, its association with agenesis of the second molar and impacted third molar; with the lesion being completely asymptomatic.

RESUMEN

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) occurs with increased frequency in all HIV transmission groups and at a particularly high rate among homosexual men. It usually presents initially as violaceous cutaneous lesions, but oral mucosa, lymph nodes and visceral organs may be affected, sometimes without skin involvement. KS in a 20-year-old HIV-seropositive patient with oral involvement as the sole presentation of the disease is presented herewith; thus contributing a new AIDS-related KS case reported in Indian Literature.

RESUMEN

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor composed of neoplastic mesenchymal cells, with varying degrees of striated muscle cell differentiation. With most cases occurring in children younger than 10 years, it is remarkably rare in adults. Further in adults, the typical pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma variants (embryonal and alveolar sub-types) occur less frequently and exhibit predilection for viscera followed by the head and neck region. A rare case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising from the buccal mucosa in a 36-year old male patient is herewith reported. Recognition of the correct diagnosis and histological sub-type is of critical importance in the therapy of this disease, since the treatment is not uniform in the literature because of the rarity of this neoplasm in the adult population.

RESUMEN

Myxomas of the head and neck are rare tumors of uncertain histogenesis. Odontogenic myxomas in maxilla are less common but behave more aggressively, as it spreads through maxillary antrum. It therefore reaches considerable size before being detected. The current case arouses particular interest due to the rapid growth and infiltrating nature of the lesion in a 25-year-old female patient, who denied any leading symptoms, even with the lesion involving extensively. Radiographic and microscopic similarities to a number of entities make diagnostic interpretation of odontogenic myxoma challenging. Therefore sound knowledge of clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features is important to establish an appropriate treatment aimed at a good clinical course and patient cure.

RESUMEN

The clinical facts and radiologic findings are very important in the diagnostic evaluation of jaw swellings, and must be considered along with histologic findings. Osteoblastoma, an uncommon primary lesion of the bone that occasionally arises in the jaws, is one such lesion causing a localized jaw swelling. Clinically, osteoblastoma can be symptomatic or even remain symptom-free, and may be diagnosed only on routine radiographic examination. Histologically and clinically, differential diagnosis for osteoblastoma ranges from a variety of benign and malignant tumors that poses a diagnostic dilemma. Stressing the importance of the correct diagnosis of such lesions, this report discusses a case of aggressive osteoblastoma of the mandible posing as a diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Oral manifestations are frequently the initial signs of acute leukemia, prompting the patient to consult the dentist first. The gingival tissue is one site commonly involved either by leukemic infiltration or by inflammatory reactive hyperplasia, causing gingival enlargement. The gingival infiltration may also be present without gingival enlargement. Early recognition of clinical findings in the oral cavity leads to its timely diagnosis and management. Since biopsy is highly contraindicated, gingival fine needle aspiration cytology was performed to assess its diagnostic value in detecting gingival infiltration in acute leukemia patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients of acute leukemia received clinical and gingival cytological examination. The cases were diagnosed based on bone marrow aspiration findings and classified according to the French-American-British criteria. The absence or presence of intraoral findings was recorded. Site for gingival fine needle aspiration cytology was selected. RESULTS: Leukemic gingival infiltration was found to be more common in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, while the characteristic oral findings were seen more commonly in acute myeloblastic leukemia. All the eight cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia that were positive for leukemic gingival infiltration showed no clinical evidence of gingival enlargement. In terms of leukemic gingival infiltration, L2 subtype was the only subtype involved, while M5 was more commonly involved than M4 subtype. Two cases of L2 subtype showed gingival enlargement due to local factors like plaque/calculus rather than due to leukemic infiltration. CONCLUSION: The technique was found to be safe and of definitive diagnostic value in detecting gingival infiltration in acute leukemia patients.
