RESUMEN

A cross-sectional systematic sampling was carried out during three consecutive winters from 2012 to 2015, to update the knowledge on the fox tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) distribution in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in Flanders. Earlier studies reported the low endemicity status of this tapeworm in the northern region of Belgium, in contrast to the south of the country and neighbouring countries. Using a modified Segmental Sedimentation and Counting Technique, followed by PCR-RFLP and sequencing, 923 foxes' intestines were examined for the presence of E. multilocularis. Based on microscopic examination, 38 out of 923 foxes were suspected to be infected with either E. multilocularis or Amoebotaenia spp., of which 19 were molecularly confirmed to be E. multilocularis, 18 were found positive for Amoebotaenia spp. and one was negative. The overall prevalence for E. multilocularis of 2.1% confirms the low endemicity of the fox tapeworm in Flanders. However, in one area in the most eastern part of Flanders (Voeren), neighbouring the Netherlands and Wallonia, a prevalence of 57% (12/21) was observed. Continuous monitoring of the fox tapeworm remains needed to assess spatio-temporal trends in distribution and to assess the risk of this zoonotic infection in Europe. The challenging differential diagnosis of E. multilocularis and Amoebotaenia spp. based on microscopic examination calls for attention.

RESUMEN

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are used almost exclusively for display purposes. Even when implemented as a sensing component, it is rarely in a manner that exploits the possible compliance of the OLED. Here it is shown that OLEDs can be integrated into compliant mechanical micro-devices making a new range of applications possible. A light-modulating pressure sensor is considered, whereby the OLED is integrated with a silicon membrane. It is shown that such devices have potential and advantages over current measurement techniques. An analytical model has been developed that calculates the response of the device. Ray tracing numerical simulations verify the theory and show that the design can be optimized to maximize the resolution of the sensor.

RESUMEN

The ability to increase the chances that infectious prey are taken by predators is an observed feature of many parasites that rely on one or more predator-prey relationships to complete their life-cycle. In the sylvatic life-cycle of Echinococcus multilocularis - the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis-- foxes are the final host, with voles acting as intermediate hosts. Here we review the evidence that E. multilocularis causes increased susceptibility to predation and present a general mathematical model for the sylvatic life-cycle. The ability to increase susceptibility to predation in the intermediate host reduces the sensitivity of the parasite population to adverse conditions. For example, there is no critical density of foxes below which the parasite is expected to die out, even if the effect of the parasite on infected prey is very small. We suggest that increased susceptibility to predation is a plausible explanation for the observed resilience of E. multilocularis during and following field trials of praziquantel baiting.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The recognition of the distressing character of infertility diagnosis and treatment has led to the development of several psychosocial interventions for infertile couples. At the Leuven University Fertility Centre, a body-mind marital group intervention was developed to help infertile couples cope with the distress related to infertility. METHODS AND RESULTS: This treatment programme was originally adapted from a mind-body approach, but integrated concepts and techniques from body-oriented therapy, art therapy and multi-family group therapy. In this paper, the therapeutic foundations, treatment goals and practical implications of the mind-body marital group intervention are outlined. Further, the treatment procedure is explained in detail and illustrated by clinical vignettes. CONCLUSIONS: Although the first clinical impressions about the usefulness of the body-mind group programme in fertility clinics seem promising, further research is needed to assess its effectiveness.

RESUMEN

The first record of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis (Cestoda, Taeniidae) in Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in northern Belgium is described. Between 1996 and 1999, 237 dead foxes were examined for the presence of this tapeworm using the intestinal scraping technique. Four foxes (1.7%) were found to be infected with E. multilocularis and showed medium to very high parasitic burdens. Three infected foxes originated from the south of the study area and the fourth animal came from the north of the study area near the border with The Netherlands. These findings are discussed in relation to the high endemicity of E. multilocularis in southern Belgium and to the increased distribution of the Red fox (V. vulpes) in northern Belgium during the last two decades.

RESUMEN

Concurrently with a survey for Echinococcus multilocularis in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in Flanders, northern Belgium, serological and parasitological analyses for Trichinella spp. were carried out from 1996 to 1999. Muscle samples from foxes in Wallonia, southern Belgium, were obtained during a survey for rabies and alveolar echinococcosis from 1998 to 2000. In muscle samples from tongue, diaphragm, hindlegs and tail of 179 Flemish foxes no larvae were found by trichinoscopy. Serum and muscle juice of, respectively 176 and 26 animals were examined using an ELISA for the detection of antibodies against excretory-secretory (ES) antigen. There were eight (4.5%) positive sera, but no positive muscle juice samples. All muscle samples from 639 foxes in Wallonia proved to be negative for larvae in artificial digestion. Serum and muscle juice of 130 and 478 foxes, respectively were examined in ES-ELISA. There were 61 (46.9%) positive sera and 90 (18.8%) positive muscle juice samples. A comparison between 88 serum and muscle juice samples of the same foxes showed that only half of the serum-positive animals were detected using muscle juice. However, for establishing the true meaning of these results, a more profound epidemiological study on the vulpine population in Belgium is necessary.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine the influence of depression levels and coping on IVF outcome in women, taking into account the cause of infertility. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. SETTING: A university hospital. PATIENT(S): Ninety-eight women undergoing IVF treatment. INTERVENTION(S): Psychometric tests were administered at the first visit (day 3) of the investigated treatment cycle. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Achievement of pregnancy. RESULTS: The nonpregnant group reported increased expression of negative emotions. In the subgroup with a female indication for IVF, increased depressive symptomatology (correlated with increased expression of negative emotions) was associated with lower pregnancy rates (PRs), whereas in the subgroup with a male indication for IVF, increased depressive symptomatology (correlated with decreased expression of negative emotions) was associated with higher PRs. CONCLUSION(S): Expression of negative emotions predicts depression levels and outcome in IVF. The cause of infertility should be taken into account when investigating the relation between psychologic functioning and outcome in IVF.

RESUMEN

The short- and long-term efficacy of a multidisciplinary pain management program was evaluated in a group of 35 chronic pain patients. At posttreatment, patients reported lower pain levels, more up-time, less medication consumption, an increase in positive cognitions about pain, and more (psychologically oriented) active coping. At follow-up, treatment gains were only partly maintained. A theoretical model regarding the impact of the treatment program was discussed. Plans for future efforts to enhance transfer and maintenance of therapeutic benefits were presented.
