BACKGROUND: It is known that the elderly population remains most of the time in light activity. Physical activity plays a key role in the primary prevention of chronic diseases to mitigate various deleterious effects of aging and improve quality of life. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether the time that postmenopausal women remain in light activities during the day are related to better quality of life and compare these results with the quality of life of those who remain longer in moderate intensity and vigorous activity. METHODS: This is a cross sectional study there were evaluated 102 women, aged 50 to 79 years, all postmenopausal. Physical activity was measured by triaxial accelerometers. The quality of life was assessed using a Brazilian validated version of the SF-36 questionnaire. The sample was divided in three groups (G1, G2 and G3) according to tercile of time spent per week on light, moderate and moderate+vigorous physical activity. The comparisons between groups were made by ANOVA One Way, and the relationship between variables were made through the Spearman's correlation coefficient, and the significance was set at 5%. RESULTS: We found that the amount of time of light physical activity shows a higher correlation values compared to the moderate and moderate+vigorous physical activity (p < 0,05) and presented significant correlation in all domains of quality of life. Vigorous physical activity did not presented significant correlation in all domains of quality of life. CONCLUSION: Our data suggests that light intensity physical activity presented influence on the quality of life of postmenopausal women. TRIAL REGISTRATION: (NCT02804308). Abstract Background: The use of autonomic modulation as a predictor of cardiovascular risk in women with breast cancer is important. Objective: To evaluate the cardiac autonomic modulation of postmenopausal women using aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer treatment, as well as its relation with the following biochemical variables. Methods: Postmenopausal women who did not have breast cancer (n = 33) and postmenopausal women with breast cancer (n = 15). For evaluation of the autonomic modulation the heart rate was recorded beat-to-beat for 30 minutes and the series of RR intervals obtained were used to calculate the following heart rate variability indices: Mean RR ms, SDNN (standard deviation of all normal RR intervals, expressed in milliseconds) ms, Mean HR, RMSSD (square root of the mean of the squared differences between adjacent normal RR interval) ms, NN50 (number of pairs of successive NNs that differ by more than 50 ms) count, pNN50% (proportion of NN50 divided by total number of NNs), RRtri (RR triangular), TINN (triangular interpolation of NN interval) ms, SD1 ms, SD2 ms, LF ms2, HF ms2, LH/HF ms2. The values of biochemical variables (fasting glycemia, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, and C-reactive protein) were analyzed by blood sample. Results: Lower values of heart rate variability indices were observed in postmenopausal women with breast cancer in relation to postmenopausal women who did not have breast cancer: Mean RR (p = 0.03); SDNN (p = 0.03); RMSSD (p = 0.03); NN50 count (p = 0.03); pNN50 % (p = 0.03); RRtri (p = 0.02); SD1 (p = 0.01); SD2 (p = 0.02); LF ms2 (p = 0.01); HF ms2 (p = 0.03).There was an inversely proportional correlation between the indices SDNN, SD2, and HFms2 with triglycerides (SDNN p = 0.04; SD2 p = 0.04; HF ms2 p = 0.04). No statistically significant correlations were found between heart rate variability indices and others variables. Statistical significance was set at 5% for all analyses. Conclusion: Women with breast cancer present reduced autonomic modulation and in these women of heart rate variability indices are inversely correlated with triglyceride values.


Resumo Fundamentos: A modulação autonômica como um preditor de risco cardiovascular em mulheres com câncer de mama é importante. Objetivos: Avaliar a modulação autonômica em mulheres pós-menopausa em uso de inibidores de aromatase como tratamento de câncer de mama, e sua relação com algumas variáveis bioquímicas. Métodos: Foram avaliadas mulheres pós-menopausa sem câncer de mama (n = 33) e mulheres pós-menopausa com câncer de mama (n = 15). Para avaliação da modulação autonômica, a frequência cardíaca (FC) foi registrada batimento a batimento por 30 minutos, e as séries de intervalos RR obtidas foram usadas para o cálculo dos seguintes índices de variabilidade da frequência cardíaca: média de RR ms, SDNN (desvio padrão de todos os intervalos RR normais) ms, FC, RMSSD (raiz quadrada da média das diferenças ao quadrado entre os intervalos RR normais adjacentes) ms, contagem NN50 (número de pares de NNs sucessivos que se diferem em mais de 50 ms), pNN50% (proporção de NN50 dividida pelo número total de NNs), RRtri (RR triangular), TINN (interpolação triangular do intervalo NN) ms, DP1 ms, DP2 ms, LF (baixa frequência) ms2, HF (alta frequência) ms2, LH/HF ms2. Os valores das variáveis bioquímicas (glicemia de jejum, triglicerídeos, HDL-colesterol, e proteína C reativa) foram analisadas das amostras de sangue. O nível de significância adotado nas análises estatísticas foi de 5%. Resultados: As mulheres pós-menopausa com câncer de mama apresentaram menores índices de variabilidade da frequência cardíaca em comparação àquelas sem câncer de mama: média de RR (p = 0,03); SDNN (p = 0,03); RMSSD (p = 0,03); contagem NN50 (p = 0,03); pNN50% (p = 0,03); RRtri (p = 0,02), DP1 (p = 0,01), DP2 (p = 0,02); LF ms2 (p = 0,01); HF ms2 (p = -0,03). Observou-se uma correlação inversamente proporcional dos índices SDNN, DP2 e HF ms2 com triglicerídeos (SDNN p = 0,04, DP2 p = 0,04; HF ms2 0,04). Não houve correlação significativa entre os índices de variabilidade da frequência cardíaca e as demais variáveis. Conclusão: Mulheres com câncer de mama apresentam modulação autonômica diminuída e índices de variabilidade da FC inversamente correlacionados com valores de triglicerídeos.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the impact of an exercise program on quality of life in older breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy. METHODS: Older breast cancer survivors were randomized into two groups: combined training: resistance + aerobic exercise program for nine months (n = 18) or control group (n = 18). Quality of life was assessed by the questionnaires SF36, EORTC QLQ-C30, and EORTC QLQ-BR23 at baseline, and at three, six, and nine months. The exercise group performed 40 min of resistance exercises on machines followed by 30 min of aerobic training on a treadmill 3x/wk. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the groups over time. RESULTS: Significant time x group interactions and moderate to high effect sizes were found for physical functioning, physical health, bodily pain, general health perception, vitality, social functioning, fatigue, sleep disturbance, body image, and upset by hair loss, favoring the exercise group. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the potential benefits and high clinical relevance of exercise programs to improve quality of life in older breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy.

Background: The aim of this study was to explore whether postmenopausal breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy differ from healthy postmenopausal women in their response to the same aerobic + resistance training. Methods: The participants were separated into two groups: postmenopausal breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy for an average of 20 months (18 women) and healthy postmenopausal women (24 women). We assessed aerobic capacity (predicted maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and maximum running velocity test (Vmax)) through a walking test, upper and lower body muscle strength using an estimated one-repetition maximum test, and body composition by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and at three, six, and nine months, respectively. The exercise program was performed three times/week over nine months and consisted of 40 min of machine-based strength training (seated cable row, bench press, leg extension, leg press, and leg curl, as well as bridge, abdominal, and standard plank exercises) followed by 30 min of treadmill walking. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures was used to compare the groups over time. Results: Postmenopausal breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy and healthy postmenopausal women presented similar improvements in estimated lower body strength, predicted VO2max and Vmax, and body fat mass. For maximal upper body strength, there was a significant group x time interaction after six months of training (p = 0.01). The healthy postmenopausal women presented a significant increase in upper body strength after six months, while postmenopausal breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy demonstrated an improvement only at nine months of training. The breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy presented increased lean mass while healthy postmenopausal women maintained values over time (Breast cancer: 33.7 ± 3.9(Pre) vs. 34.1 ± 3.4 kg (Post) and healthy women: 36.4 ± 5.1 (Pre) vs. 36.4 ± 5.0 kg (Post), p = 0.004). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that postmenopausal women undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy for breast cancer demonstrated adaptations and similar trainability to the same regimen of resistance + aerobic training as healthy postmenopausal women. Implications for Rehabilitation Combined exercise program (aerobic plus resistance) is an important non-pharmacological strategies to improve strength, aerobic capacity, and body composition in breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy. Furthermore, it is important to highlight that the time of intervention seems to influence the upper body strength response in this population. This study showed that trainers and other specialists do not need to modify the prescription of exercise related to healthy women, since the combined exercise program induced similar benefits in strength, aerobic capacity, and body composition in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy and healthy postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of combined aerobic + resistance training on body composition and metabolic markers in older breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy. METHODS: Older breast cancer survivors were randomized to an exercise [resistance + aerobic training]: n = 18, or placebo control group: n = 18. Body composition (measured by DXA) and blood markers of lipid and glucose were measured at baseline, and at 12, 24, and 36 weeks. The exercise group performed 40 min of resistance exercises on machines followed by 30 min of aerobic training on a treadmill, three times per week. Separate 2 (group) × 4 (time) repeated-measure ANOVAs were used to compare groups over time. RESULTS: Significant group × time interactions were found for total and trunk fat mass (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001) and % body fat (p < 0.001), where women in the exercise group lost fat compared to slight gains among women in the stretching control group. There were no significant differences between groups for lean mass, hip or spine BMD, metabolic markers, or CRP. CONCLUSION: Our aerobic + resistance exercise program prevented fat gain, but may not have been sufficient to improve metabolic or bone health markers in older breast cancer survivors undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between physical activity practice and metabolic profile of postmenopausal women under treatment with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) for the treatment of breast cancer. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study, conducted with 101 postmenopausal women (aged 50-80 years). The sample was divided into two groups; group without cancer (GW; n=65) and breast cancer group treated with AIs (GC; n=36). Physical activity (PA) was evaluated by questionnaire. Correlations between physical activity and metabolic variables were made by Pearson's correlation coefficient and the magnitude of these relationships by linear regression. RESULTS: In GW, there were observed significant inverse correlations between physical activity and VLDL cholesterol (ß=-0.036; 95% CI=-0.068; -0.004); triglycerides (ß=-0.036; 95% CI=-0.015; -0.002); glycose (ß=-0.029; 95% CI=-0.047; -0.012); and C-reactive protein (ß=-0.44; 95% CI=-0.085; -0.003). However, for women under treatment of AIs there was no relationship between physical activity and metabolic variables. CONCLUSION: The amount of physical activity practice is inversely related to lipid profile, glucose and C-reactive protein in women without breast cancer. This relation was not observed in the cancer survivors, suggesting that the use of aromatase inhibitors could influence or low intensity of physical activity.

AIM: To analyze the lipid profile of older people aged ≥80 years according to body composition (high fat mass, low muscle mass and both). MATERIAL AND METHOD: The sample consisted of 113 older people aged ≥80 years. The assessment of body composition was made using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and the lipid profile analysis using an enzymatic colorimetric kit. We used Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test to compare the mean of lipid profile according to body composition and were constructed logistic regression models to verify the association between these two variables. RESULTS: It was found that older people with high fat had higher mean values of TG compared to normal and low muscle mass group. Older people with low muscle mass showed mean values of LDL-c lower than other groups. It was observed that older people with high fat is more likely to have (OR 2.70; 95%CI 1.14-6.37) high blood concentration of TG. CONCLUSION: Thus, it appears that high fat is related to the high blood concentration of TG in older people aged ≥80 years, especially those with Asian origin and diabetes besides those with low muscle mass shows lower mean values of LDL-c.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 16-week program of combined aerobic and resistance training on the body composition of postmenopausal women who are obese. The participants were divided into two groups: training group (TG, n = 37) and non-trained control group (CG, n = 18). The trunk fat, fat mass, percentage of fat mass and fat-free mass were estimated using DXA. Three nonconsecutive 24-hour dietary recalls were conducted. The training protocol consisted of 50 minutes of resistance training followed by 30 minutes of aerobic training. After the 16-week training program, differences were observed in trunk fat (CG= 0.064 x TG= -0.571 Kg; p-value = .020), fat mass (CG= -0.088 x TG= -1.037 Kg; p-value = .020) and fat-free mass (CG= -0.388 x TG= 1.049 Kg; p = .001). Therefore, a 16-week program of systematic combined aerobic and resistance training in obese postmenopausal women was effective in improving fat-free mass and decreasing both whole and abdominal adiposity.


O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos de 16 semanas de treinamento aeróbio e resistido combinados na composição corporal de mulheres na pós-menopausa. As participantes foram divididas em dois grupos: grupo treinamento (GT, n = 37) e grupo controle (GC, n = 18). A gordura de tronco, massa gorda, percentual de gordura e massa livre de gordura foram estimadas pelo DEXA. O recordatório alimentar de 24 h foi realizado três dias não consecutivos para controle alimentar. O protocolo de treinamento consistiu de 50 minutos de treinamento resistido seguido por 30 minutos de treinamento aeróbio. Após 16 semanas de treinamento diferenças foram observadas na gordura de tronco (GC= 0,064 x GT= -0,571 Kg; p-valor= 0,020), massa gorda (GC= -0,088 x GT= -1,037 Kg; p-valor= 0,020) e massa livre de gordura (GC= -0,388 x GT= 1,049 Kg; p-valor=0,001). Assim, 16 semanas de treinamento aeróbio e resistido combinado em mulheres obesas na pós-menopausa é efetivo em aumentar a massa livre de gordura e reduzir adiposidade total e abdominal.


El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los efectos de 16 semanas de entrenamiento aeróbico y de resistencia combinada en la composición corporal en mujeres posmenopáusicas obesas. Los participantes fueron divididos en dos grupos: grupo de entrenamiento (GE, n = 37) y control (C, n = 18). La grasa del tronco, la masa grasa, porcentaje de masa grasa y masa libre de grasa se ​​ utilizó el DXA. El recordatorio de 24 horas se realizó tres días no consecutivos para el control de los alimentos. El protocolo de entrenamiento consistió en 50 minutos de entrenamiento de resistencia, después 30 minutos de entrenamiento aeróbico.
