RESUMEN

A condition known as bimaxillary protrusion occurs when the front teeth protrude due to the forward positioning of the lower and upper jaws. Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are utilized to provide anchorage and facilitate the controlled retraction of maxillary and mandibular protruding teeth, helping to correct the patient's bite and facial aesthetics. A 27-year-old female with bimaxillary protrusion reported to the Department of Orthodontics. On examination, the facial profile of the patient was convex. The clinical FMA was high. With a deep mentolabial sulcus and an acute nasolabial angle, lips were potentially competent. An intraoral examination revealed proclined incisors with spacing in the maxillary arch and proclined anterior teeth in the mandibular arch. Space closure was done using sliding mechanics with direct anchorage from a mini-screw after the extraction of all four first premolars. There was a significant improvement in the patient's profile posttreatment.

RESUMEN

Hyaluronic acid (HA) a polysaccharide present in many areas of the body like the synovium of synovial joints, and connective tissues which have high regenerative and biocompatible properties has been an area of interest since recent times in dentistry. Several research papers and review articles were studied in the Pubmed database to formulate this review article. The main aim of this article is to demonstrate various applications of HA in different branches of dentistry. The PubMed database was searched for keywords "Hyaluronic acid AND periodontics," "Hyaluronic acid AND oral and maxillofacial surgery," "Hyaluronic acid AND oral medicine," "Hyaluronic acid AND orthodontics," "Hyaluronic acid AND endodontics," and "Hyaluronic acid AND aesthetic dentistry" which resulted in six, 296, 83, 86, 40, and 49 articles, respectively. The most relevant and informative articles were selected and studied for this review article. This review article will also help people to gain knowledge about the future aspects of the use of HA in dentistry and also motivate clinicians and new-generation dentists to inculcate the HA's use in their respective practice in dentistry.

Pyogenic granuloma is a common reactive oral lesion primarily found in the gingiva and rarely in extraction sockets. While it can develop at any age, it is more prevalent in the third and fourth decades of life with a higher occurrence in females. Various factors contribute to its development and surgical removal is the gold standard treatment; however, there are various other methods available. This case report documents a rare event in which a female patient in her early 40s presented with an exophytic lesion affecting the extraction socket of her maxillary right lateral incisor. The lesion was effectively removed through surgical excision. Additionally, it explores the clinical features and pathogenesis of this lesion. The purpose of this case report is to shed light on the uncommon incidence of pyogenic granuloma following tooth extraction. This non-neoplastic vascular growth often presents as an erythematous, ulcerated lesion with a tendency to bleed, with either a sessile or pedunculated base. Our case is one of only five instances documented in the literature, underscoring the importance of knowledge and timely response in such unusual circumstances. We emphasize the significance of early detection and management for improved patient outcomes and a better understanding of this rare condition.

A polyaromatic nearly-crystalline thermoplastic polymer, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), has become a useful biomaterial and its use has increased in dentistry because of its properties. PEEK is scientifically approved and is among the safest material used to restore lost orofacial tissues at present. PEEK has a property of high biocompatibility, therefore there is increased utilization of PEEK in orthopaedic and trauma cases. PEEK has several excellent properties due to which it has been used in several fields of dentistry such as orthodontic wires, implants, removable dentures, fixed partial dentures, finger prostheses, temporary abutments, implant-supported provisional crowns, healing caps, maxillofacial prostheses, etc. Due to its modification, PEEK material is used more frequently in clinical dentistry. PEEK can be used as a material that is not traditional in the realm of dental care. Modification of PEEK has led to an increase in its use in the field of dentistry.

Background The most critical factors in the satisfactory recovery of a patient post-surgery are obedience to sterilization and aseptic protocol. Using aseptic principles, the standard hand scrubbing and gloving procedure prevents contamination of the surgical site and aids in infection control.  Methods Eighty dental interns were observed during minor oral surgical procedures for hand scrubbing and donning sterile surgical gloves, following the steps and guidelines provided by World Health Organization (WHO). The dental interns were evaluated, and in order to enhance their understanding of hand scrubbing and donning surgical gloves, desensitization programs were conducted through lectures using PowerPoint presentations. After one week, the participants were observed and evaluated again. This program made the participants aware of asepsis and infection control in clinical practice. Results Prior to intervention, only 37.14% of young dental surgeons performed proper conventional hand hygiene practices. After the intervention, this percentage increased to 62.142%, indicating a significant improvement. Regarding the donning of sterile surgical gloves, 43.75% of participants followed the standard steps before the intervention. After the intervention, the percentage raised to 86.25% indicating substantial growth. Conclusion Observations before and after the evaluation demonstrated significant changes in the acceptance rates for the fundamental criteria of hand hygiene and donning sterile surgical gloves. Adhering to both procedures according to WHO guidelines will help to reduce the risk of infections and raise awareness about asepsis in the practice among young dental surgeons.

Orbital floor fracture is the most common type of orbit-related injury seen in pediatric age groups. It is also called a white-eyed blowout fracture when the usual signs of orbital fracture-periorbital edema, ecchymosis, and subconjunctival hemorrhage are absent. Several materials are used for orbital defect reconstruction. The most popular and widely used material is titanium mesh. We present a case of a 10-year-old boy with a white-eyed blowout fracture of the floor of the orbit of the left side. The patient had a history of trauma, after which he developed diplopia in the left eye. On examination, his upward gaze was restricted in the left eye, which was suggestive of inferior rectus muscle entrapment. The orbital floor reconstruction was done using a hernia mesh made up of nonresorbable polypropylene material. This case demonstrates the utility of nonresorbable materials in orbital defect reconstruction in pediatric patients. Further studies are needed to better understand the scope of polypropylene-based materials in the floor of orbit reconstruction and their benefits and shortcomings in the long run.

Introduction: Mandibular angle fracture (MAF) is the second most common site of all fractures of the mandible with the highest complication rate. Management of MAF has evolved in the past four decades. The purpose of the prospective study was to compare the efficacy of new design titanium miniplate (NDM) with conventional titanium miniplate (CTM) in the treatment of MAF. Objectives: Mouth opening, occlusion, bite force measurement, and radiographs compared preoperatively and first week, first month and third month postoperatively. Materials and Method: Fourteen patients diagnosed with MAF were randomly divided into two groups: Group A (seven patients) was treated with NDM and Group B (seven patients) with CTM. Patients were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively at an interval of one week, one month and three months. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA and Post hoc Tukey test showed a significant increase in bite force and mouth opening for both groups in first and third postoperative months. Unpaired t-test showed slightly better mouth opening in Group B and slightly higher bite force in Group A. Discussion: Both miniplates fulfilled all the study objectives and equally satisfactory healing was seen at the end of third month. NDM offers better stability, rigidity, and anatomic reduction of the fracture with a drawback of difficulty in adaptation and increased operative timing compared to CTM. Hence, we would like to conclude that both miniplates are equally efficient in the treatment of non-comminuted angle fractures with the NDM having upper hand in stability.

Background and objectives The nose is one of the major focuses of face attractiveness. Through careful evaluation of the soft tissue drape, a treatment plan can be designed to enhance a patient's facial attractiveness. The aim of this study was to evaluate and assess the variations in nasal morphology among class I malocclusion and class II horizontal and class II vertical malocclusion. Material and method Lateral cephalograms of 27 patients were taken and consisted of three groups: skeletal class I malocclusion, class II horizontal malocclusion, and class II vertical malocclusion. The various linear and angular measurements specific to nose were assessed. Results and conclusion In class II and class I malocclusion, the nose is observed to be straight and convex, respectively. Additionally, compared to class II horizontal malocclusion, it is more convex in class II vertical malocclusion. Vertical growers or high-angle cases are more likely to have a nose with an increased inclination toward nasal dorsum convexity than horizontal growers or low-angle instances.

Developmental anomaly of the maxillary lateral incisors most commonly leads to the occurrence of peg lateral. It is a variant of microdontia where the lateral incisors are smaller than the normal size. This appears as unilaterally or bilaterally. This condition is characterised by the converging of the mesial and distal surfaces forming a cone shape. A variety of treatment options exist for this anomaly including orthodontic treatment, restorative technique and veneer. This case report deals with an individual presenting with peg lateral of the maxillary arch along with midline diastema. The multidisciplinary treatment protocol of orthodontic treatment involving minor tooth movement and space closure in conjunction with a restorative technique for correction was preferred.
