RESUMEN

A simple approach was developed to synthesize cobalt ferrite nanoparticles/graphene quantum dots (CF/GQDs). The material was prepared from a homogeneous mixture of iron nitrate, cobalt nitrate, and starch at 140, 180 and 200 °C in a 24 h thermal hydrolysis process. The obtained materials were characterised by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Cobalt ferrite crystals of around 8-10 nm and graphene quantum dots formed directly at 200 °C. Stacking GQDs sheets onto the CF nanoparticles resulted in CF/GQDs nanoparticles. The nanocomposite exhibits satisfactory fluorescent and superparamagnetic properties, which are vital for catalytic applications. The CF/GQDs catalyse significantly the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. The catalyst can be recycled with an external magnetic field and displays suitable stability. Also, it was reused in three successive experiments with a loss of efficiency of about 5%. The CF/GQDs are considered as an efficient photocatalyst for MB degradation and other dyes.

Localized short interfering RNA (siRNA) therapy has the potential to drive high-specificity molecular-level treatment of a variety of disease states. Unfortunately, effective siRNA therapy suffers from several barriers to its intracellular delivery. Thus, drug delivery systems that package and control the release of therapeutic siRNAs are necessary to overcome these obstacles to clinical translation. Layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic assembly of thin film coatings containing siRNA and protonatable, hydrolyzable poly(ß-aminoester) (PBAE) polymers is one such drug delivery strategy. However, the impact of PBAE physicochemical properties on the transfection efficacy of siRNA released from LbL thin film coatings has not been systematically characterized. In this study, we investigate the siRNA transfection efficacy of four structurally similar PBAEs in vitro. We demonstrate that small changes in structure yield large changes in physicochemical properties, such as hydrophobicity, pKa, and amine chemical structure, driving differences in the interactions between PBAEs and siRNA in polyplexes and in LbL thin film coatings for wound dressings. In our polymer set, Poly3 forms the most stable interactions with siRNA (Keff,w/w = 0.298) to slow release kinetics and enhance transfection of reporter cells in both colloidal and thin film coating approaches. This is due to its unique physiochemical properties: high hydrophobicity (clog P = 7.86), effective pKa closest to endosomal pH (pKa = 6.21), and high cooperativity in buffering (nhill = 7.2). These properties bestow Poly3 with enhanced endosomal buffering and escape properties. Taken together, this work elucidates the connections between small changes in polymer structure, emergent properties, and polyelectrolyte theory to better understand PBAE transfection efficacy.

Background: Aquatic plants play a crucial role in nature-based wastewater treatment and provide a promising substrate for renewable energy production using anaerobic digestion (AD) technology. This study aimed to examine the contaminant removal from AD effluent by water lettuce (WL) and produce biogas from WL biomass co-digested with pig dung (PD) in a farm-scale biogas digester. Methods: The first experiment used styrofoam boxes containing husbandry AD effluent. WLs were initially arranged in 50%, 25%, 12.5%, and 0% surface coverage. Each treatment was conducted in five replicates under natural conditions. In the second experiment, WL biomass was co-digested with PD into an existing anaerobic digester to examine biogas production on a farm scale. Results: Over 30 days, the treatment efficiency of TSS, BOD5, COD, TKN, and TP in the effluent was 93.75-97.66%, 76.63-82.56%, 76.78-82.89%, 61.75-63.75%, and 89.00-89.57%, respectively. Higher WL coverage increased the pollutant elimination potential. The WL biomass doubled after 12 days for all treatments. In the farm-scale biogas production, the biogas yield varied between 190.6 and 292.9 L kg VSadded-1. The methane content reached over 54%. Conclusions: WL removed AD effluent nutrients effectively through a phytoremediation system and generated significant biomass for renewable energy production in a farm-scale model.

INTRODUCTION: Advanced cardiac imaging is an important component in pre-procedural planning for ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablations. inHEART's proprietary software, inHEART Models, and its academic version, Multimodality Platform for Specific Imaging in Cardiology (MUSIC), provide detailed characterization of anatomical structures and scars. AREAS COVERED: This review highlights the current overview of the market and offers insight into inHEART Models and MUSIC and its application during VT ablations with supporting case examples. An overview of the clinical profile and regulatory status of inHEART Models, and other competing technologies, such as Automatic Detection of Arrhythmia Substrate (ADAS) 3D software and Catheter Precision's View into Ventricular Onset (VIVO), are also discussed. EXPERT OPINION: inHEART and MUSIC utilization has increased over the last few years and continues to establish its presence as an important aspect of VT ablations. Its unique proprietary software sets itself apart from others in the field. The introduction of dual source-photon counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) is expected to make significant advancements in the field and take imaging to a new level. inHEART's continued research in cardiac imaging and digital technology is expected to increase as is its global presence in the electrophysiology (EP) community.

Chronic non-healing wounds occur frequently in individuals affected by diabetes, yet standard-of-care treatment leaves many patients inadequately treated or with recurring wounds. MicroRNA (miR) expression is dysregulated in diabetic wounds and drives an anti-angiogenic phenotype, but miRs can be inhibited with short, chemically-modified RNA oligonucleotides (anti-miRs). Clinical translation of anti-miRs is hindered by delivery challenges such as rapid clearance and uptake by off-target cells, requiring repeated injections, excessively large doses, and bolus dosing mismatched to the dynamics of the wound healing process. To address these limitations, we engineered electrostatically assembled wound dressings that locally release anti-miR-92a, as miR-92a is implicated in angiogenesis and wound repair. In vitro, anti-miR-92a released from these dressings was taken up by cells and inhibited its target. An in vivo cellular biodistribution study in murine diabetic wounds revealed that endothelial cells, which play a critical role in angiogenesis, exhibit higher uptake of anti-miR eluted from coated dressings than other cell types involved in the wound healing process. In a proof-of-concept efficacy study in the same wound model, anti-miR targeting anti-angiogenic miR-92a de-repressed target genes, increased gross wound closure, and induced a sex-dependent increase in vascularization. Overall, this proof-of-concept study demonstrates a facile, translational materials approach for modulating gene expression in ulcer endothelial cells to promote angiogenesis and wound healing. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of probing cellular interactions between the drug delivery system and the target cells to drive therapeutic efficacy.

Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease listed as one of the top global health problems. Phaeanthus vietnamensis BÂN is a well-known medicinal plant in Vietnam with its anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory potential, and gastro-protective properties. However, there is no study about P. vietnamensis extract (PVE) on asthma disease. Here, an OVA-induced asthma mouse model was established to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effects and possible mechanisms of PVE. BALB/c mice were sensitized by injecting 50 µg OVA into the peritoneal and challenged by nebulization with 5% OVA. Mice were orally administered various doses of PVE once daily (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) or dexamethasone (Dex; 2.5 mg/kg) or Saline 1 h before the OVA challenge. The cell infiltrated in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was analyzed; levels of OVA-specific immunoglobulins in serum, cytokines, and transcription factors in the BALF were measured, and lung histopathology was evaluated. PVE, especially PVE 200mg/kg dose, could improve asthma exacerbation by balancing the Th1/Th2 ratio, reducing inflammatory cells in BALF, depressing serum anti-specific OVA IgE, anti-specific OVA IgG1, histamine levels, and retrieving lung histology. Moreover, the PVE treatment group significantly increased the expressions of antioxidant enzymes Nrf2 and HO-1 in the lung tissue and the level of those antioxidant enzymes in the BALF, decreasing the oxidative stress marker MDA level in the BALF, leading to the relieving the activation of MAPK signaling in asthmatic condition. The present study demonstrated that Phaeanthus vietnamensis BÂN, traditionally used in Vietnam as a medicinal plant, may be used as an efficacious agent for treating asthmatic disease.

Cassia fistula seed-derived coagulant has been reported to exhibit high coagulating-flocculating activity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness for the wastewater treatment, especially of textile wastewater. For heavy metal removal, however, research focusing on evaluating the feasibility of this material is still limited. Therefore, this study reports jar-test experiments in which the Zn2+ and Ni2+ removal efficiency of C. fistula coagulant was assessed. Moreover, a comparison of coagulation performance using a conventional chemical coagulant and the natural coagulant was performed. Characterization of the C. fistula seed-derived coagulant revealed the presence of important functional groups and fibrous networks with rough surfaces. A bench-scale study indicated that the coagulation performance of the two coagulants depends strongly on the initial concentration of metal ions, pH level, and coagulant dosage. The C. fistula seed-derived coagulant was found to possess higher removal efficiency than polyaluminum chloride. This natural coagulant removed over 80% of metal ions at the optimal conditions of pH 5.0, a metal ion concentration of 25 ppm, and a dosage of 0.8 and 1.6 g/L for Zn2+ and Ni2+, respectively. This study shows that C. fistula seed-derived coagulant is a potential alternative to chemical coagulants and could be developed to provide an environmentally friendly, economical, and efficient wastewater treatment.

Monitoring ex-situ water parameters, namely heavy metals, needs time and laboratory work for water sampling and analytical processes, which can retard the response to ongoing pollution events. Previous studies have successfully applied fast modeling techniques such as artificial intelligence algorithms to predict heavy metals. However, neither low-cost feature predictability nor explainability assessments have been considered in the modeling process. This study proposes a reliable and explainable framework to find an effective model and feature set to predict heavy metals in groundwater. The integrated assessment framework has four steps: model selection uncertainty, feature selection uncertainty, predictive uncertainty, and model interpretability. The results show that Random Forest is the most suitable model, and quick-measure parameters can be used as predictors for arsenic (As), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn). Although the model performance is auspicious, it likely produces significant uncertainties. The findings also demonstrate that arsenic is related to nutrients and spatial distribution, while Fe and Mn are affected by spatial distribution and salinity. Some limitations and suggestions are also discussed to improve the prediction accuracy and interpretability.

As the backbone of Vietnam's economy, the country has recently established a number of policies for promoting and investing in smart agriculture in the Mekong Delta, the country's largest agricultural hub, to foster overall socio-economic development. However, water remains a critical constraint for crop production, with progress being hindered by water scarcity and quality issues, and compounded by socio-economic transformation and climate change. Considering these challenges, this study used the CROPWAT model and a wide spectrum of climate change scenarios to investigate future total water demands in the 2030s and 2050s as well as drought levels in two underdeveloped semi-mountainous reservoir catchments, i.e., O Ta Soc and O Tuk Sa in An Giang province. The results suggest that the usable storage capacity of the O Ta Soc reservoir will increase to 650,000 m3 to meet water supply demands under all climate change scenarios and the medium-term, moderate drought conditions. The useable storage capacity of the O Tuk Sa reservoir will also be increased to 880,000 m3 and the irrigation area would see a marked 70% reduction compared to its design irrigation. Under these circumstances, the O Tuk Sa reservoir will continue to supply water under all climate change scenarios and medium-term droughts. As a core element for strategic planning and to ensure efficient management of water resources, the results highlight the importance of estimating potential runoff and rainfall in semi-mountainous reservoir catchments under various drought conditions in order to propose the suitable expansion of the useable water storage capacities.

Traditionally, left ventricular (LV) lead position was guided by anatomic criteria of pacing from the lateral wall of the LV. However, large trials showed little effect of LV lead position on outcomes, other than noting worse outcomes with apical positions. Given the poor correlation of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) outcomes with anatomically guided LV lead placement, focus shifted toward more physiologic predictors such as targeting the areas of delayed mechanical and electrical activation. Measures of left ventricular delay and interventricular delay are strong predictors of CRT response.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to develop screening criteria predicting the lack of poor neurologic outcomes in patients presenting with traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (tSAH) and to evaluate their potential to improve resource allocation in these cases. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients presenting with tSAH to the emergency department (ED) of a tertiary-care institution from 2016 to 2018. We defined good neurologic outcomes as patients with stable/improving neurologic status, who did not require neurosurgical intervention, had no expanding bleed, and needed no hospital readmission. Univariate and multivariate models were generated to predict risk factors inversely associated with good neurologic outcome. RESULTS: A total of 167 patients presented with tSAH from 2016 to 2018. The presence of depressed skull fracture, concomitant spinal fracture, low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, cranial nerve palsies, disorientation, concomitant hemorrhages, midline shift, increased international normalized ratio (INR), and emergent medical intervention were inversely correlated with likelihood of good neurologic outcome on univariate analysis. Multivariate regression showed that midline shift (odds ratio [OR], 0.22; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.05-0.89; P = 0.04), GCS score <13 (OR, 0.22; 95% CI, 0.05-0.99; P = 0.05), increased INR (OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.03-0.85; P = 0.04), and emergent medical intervention (OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.04-0.63; P = 0.01) were independently associated with lower likelihood of good neurologic outcome. Forty-six patients without any factors had good outcomes but were held in the ED or admitted to the hospital. These patients (if instead discharged directly) meant a potential cost savings of $179,172. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we found multiple risk factors inversely associated with good neurologic outcome, namely low GCS score, midline shift, emergent medical intervention, and INR ≥1.4. Our findings may aid clinicians in determining which tSAH patients are candidates for safe early discharge.

Dihydrouridine (D) is a tRNA-modified base conserved throughout all kingdoms of life and assuming an important structural role. The conserved dihydrouridine synthases (Dus) carries out D-synthesis. DusA, DusB and DusC are bacterial members, and their substrate specificity has been determined in Escherichia coli. DusA synthesizes D20/D20a while DusB and DusC are responsible for the synthesis of D17 and D16, respectively. Here, we characterize the function of the unique dus gene encoding a DusB detected in Mollicutes, which are bacteria that evolved from a common Firmicute ancestor via massive genome reduction. Using in vitro activity tests as well as in vivo E. coli complementation assays with the enzyme from Mycoplasma capricolum (DusBMCap), a model organism for the study of these parasitic bacteria, we show that, as expected for a DusB homolog, DusBMCap modifies U17 to D17 but also synthetizes D20/D20a combining therefore both E. coli DusA and DusB activities. Hence, this is the first case of a Dus enzyme able to modify up to three different sites as well as the first example of a tRNA-modifying enzyme that can modify bases present on the two opposite sides of an RNA-loop structure. Comparative analysis of the distribution of DusB homologs in Firmicutes revealed the existence of three DusB subgroups namely DusB1, DusB2 and DusB3. The first two subgroups were likely present in the Firmicute ancestor, and Mollicutes have retained DusB1 and lost DusB2. Altogether, our results suggest that the multisite specificity of the M. capricolum DusB enzyme could be an ancestral property.

BACKGROUND: The short-term safety, feasibility, and performance of His-bundle pacing (HBP) leads have been reported; however, their longer-term performance beyond 1 year remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the intermediate-term performance and safety of HBP. METHODS: All HBP lead implants at Virginia Commonwealth University between January 2014 and January 2019 were analyzed. HBP was performed using a Medtronic SelectSecure 3830-69 cm pacing lead. RESULTS: Of 295 attempts, successful HBP implantation (selective or nonselective) was seen in 274 cases (93%). Mean follow-up duration was 22.8 ± 19.5 months (median 19.5; interquartile range 11-33). Mean age was 69 ± 15 years; 58% were males; and ejection fraction <50% was noted in 30%. Indications for pacemaker included sick sinus syndrome in 41%, atrioventricular block in 36%, cardiac resynchronization therapy in 7%, and refractory atrial fibrillation in 15%. Selective HBP was achieved in 33%. Mean HBP capture threshold at implant was 1.1 ± 0.9 V at 0.8 ± 0.2 ms, which significantly increased at chronic follow-up to 1.7 ± 1.1 V at 0.8 ± 0.3 ms (P <.001). Threshold was ≥2.5 V in 24% of patients, and 28% had an increase in HBP threshold ≥1 V. Loss of His-bundle capture at follow-up (septal right ventricular pacing) was seen in 17%. There was a total of 31 (11%) lead revisions, primarily for unacceptably high thresholds. CONCLUSION: Although HBP can prevent or improve pacing-induced cardiomyopathy, the elevated capture thresholds, loss of His-bundle capture, and lead revision rates at intermediate follow-up are of concern. Longer-term follow-up data from multiple centers are needed.

Background The evaluation of nutrient variability plays a crucial role in accessing soil potentials and practical intervention responses in rice production systems. Synthetic fertilizer applications and cultivation practices are considered key factors affecting nutrient dynamics and availability. Here, we assessed the nutrient dynamics in surface, subsurface water and soil under local water management and conventional rice cultivation practices in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. Methods We implemented a field experiment (200 m 2) in the 2018 wet season and the 2019 dry season in a triple rice-cropping field. Eight samples of surface water, subsurface water (30-45 cm), and topsoil (0-20 cm) were collected and analysed during the rice-growing seasons. Results The results showed that N-NH 4 +, P-PO 4 3- and total P peaks were achieved after fertilizing. Irrespective of seasons, the nutrient content in surface water was always greater than that of subsurface water ( P < 0.001), with the exception of N-NO 3 -, which was insignificant ( P > 0.05). When comparing the wet and dry seasons, nutrient concentrations exhibited minor differences ( P > 0.05). Under conventional rice cultivation, the effects of synthetic fertilizer topdressing on the total N, soil organic matter (SOM), and total P were negligible in the soil. Higher rates of N fertilizer application did not significantly increase soil N-NH 4 +, total N, yet larger P fertilizer amounts substantially enhanced soil total P ( P < 0.001). Conclusions Under conventional rice cultivation, N-NH 4 +, P-PO 4 3- and total P losses mainly occur through runoff rather than leaching. While N-NO 3 - loss is similar in surface water and subsurface water. Notably, nutrient content in soil was high; whilst SOM was seen to be low-to-medium between seasons. Future work should consider the nutrient balance and dynamic simulation in the lowland soil of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta's paddy fields.

RESUMEN

STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review. OBJECTIVES: Robotic systems in spinal surgery may offer potential benefits for both patients and surgeons. In this article, the authors explore the future prospects and current limitations of robotic systems in minimally invasive spine surgery. METHODS: We describe recent developments in robotic spine surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery. Institutional review board approval was not needed. RESULTS: Although robotic application in spine surgery has been gradual, the past decade has seen the arrival of several novel robotic systems for spinal procedures, suggesting the evolution of technology capable of augmenting surgical ability. CONCLUSION: Spine surgery is well positioned to benefit from robotic assistance and automation. Paired with enhanced navigation technologies, robotic systems have tremendous potential to supplement the skills of spine surgeons, improving patient safety and outcomes while limiting complications and costs.
