RESUMEN

Background: The benefits of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for patients with major depression disorders are well-established, however, there is a notable research gap concerning its comprehensive effects on both depressive symptoms and cognitive functions. Existing research is inconclusive regarding the cognitive enhancement effects of tDCS specifically in MDD patients. The present study aims to fill this knowledge gap by scrutinizing the most updated evidence on the effectiveness of tDCS in anti-depressive treatment and its influence on cognitive function. Methods: A systematic review was performed from the first date available in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and additional sources published in English from 1 January 2001 to 31 May 2023. We examined cognitive outcomes from randomized, sham-controlled trials of tDCS treatment for major depression. The evaluation process strictly followed the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool into the literature, and meta-analysis was performed according to the Cochrane System Reviewer's Manual. Results: In this quantitative synthesis, we incorporated data from a total of 371 patients across 12 studies. Results showed significant benefits following active tDCS compared to sham for the antidepressant effect [SMD: -0.77 (-1.44, -0.11)]. Furthermore, active relative to sham tDCS treatment was associated with increased performance gains on a measure of verbal memory [SMD: 0.30 (-0.02, 0.62)]. These results did not indicate any cognitive enhancement after active tDCS relative to sham for global cognitive function, whereas there was a noticeable trend toward statistical significance specifically in the effect of verbal memory. Conclusions: Our study offers crucial evidence-based medical support for tDCS in antidepressant and dimension-specific cognitive benefits. Further well-designed, large-scale randomized sham-controlled trials are warranted to further validate these findings. RESUMEN

The integration of hydrogel-based bioinks with 3D bioprinting technologies presents an innovative approach to chronic wound management, which is particularly challenging to treat because of its multifactorial nature and high risk of complications. Using precise deposition techniques, 3D bioprinting significantly alters traditional wound care paradigms by enabling the fabrication of patient-specific wound dressings that imitate natural tissue properties. Hydrogels are notably beneficial for these applications because of their abundant water content and mechanical properties, which promote cell viability and pathophysiological processes of wound healing, such as re-epithelialization and angiogenesis. This article reviews key 3D printing technologies and their significance in enhancing the structural and functional outcomes of wound-care solutions. Challenges in bioink viscosity, cell viability, and printability are addressed, along with discussions on the cross-linking and mechanical stability of the constructs. The potential of 3D bioprinting to revolutionize chronic wound management rests on its capacity to generate remedies that expedite healing and minimize infection risks. Nevertheless, further studies and clinical trials are necessary to advance these therapies from laboratory to clinical use.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pain empathy represents a fundamental building block of several social functions, which have been demonstrated to be impaired across various mental disorders by accumulating evidence from case-control functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. However, it remains unclear whether the dysregulations are underpinned by robust neural alterations across mental disorders. METHODS: This study utilized coordinate-based meta-analyses to quantitatively determine robust markers of altered pain empathy across mental disorders. To support the interpretation of the findings exploratory network-level and behavioral meta-analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Quantitative analysis of eleven case-control fMRI studies with data from 296 patients and 229 controls revealed patients with mental disorders exhibited increased pain empathic reactivity in the left anterior cingulate gyrus, adjacent medial prefrontal cortex, and right middle temporal gyrus, yet decreased activity in the left cerebellum IV/V and left middle occipital gyrus compared to controls. The hyperactive regions showed network-level interactions with the core default mode network (DMN) and were associated with affective and social cognitive domains. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that pain-empathic alterations across mental disorders are underpinned by excessive empathic reactivity in brain systems involved in empathic distress and social processes, highlighting a shared therapeutic target to normalize basal social dysfunctions in mental disorders.

RESUMEN

Designing bio-based polyurethane materials with excellent mechanical, biocompatibility, and self-healing properties simultaneously is currently a significant challenge due to the increasing demands for high-performance materials. In this study, we propose an asymmetric backbone strategy utilizing bio-based polycarbonate as the soft segment, equimolar ratios of lysine diisocyanate and isophorone diisocyanate as asymmetric hard segments, and isophorone diamine as the chain extender. The resulting polyurethane elastomers exhibit excellent mechanical properties, including high tensile stress (46.1 MPa), toughness (213.9 MJ/m3), and fracture energy (98.47 kJ/m3). The polyurethane elastomers demonstrate good self-healing and recyclable properties under simple heat treatment. Furthermore, biological experiments confirm the degradability and bio-safety of the bio-based polyurethane elastomers, which have shown potential in accelerating wound healing in mice when used as surgical sutures. These findings highlight the promising prospects of the obtained polyurethane elastomers in various applications, including biomedicine, flexible sensing, and electronic components.

RESUMEN

Heat shock protein 40 belonging to heat shock protein family plays an important role in the immune responses of organisms. In this study, the full length cDNA of Hsp40 was 2426 bp including a 1368 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding 455 amino acids with a molecular weight of 49.16 kDa and a theoretical isoelectric point of 9.34 in blood parrot Vieja synspila ♀ × Amphilophus citrinellus ♂, an important ornamental fish in China. It had three conserved domains DnaJ, CRR and DnaJ_C. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the sequence of Hsp40 among species was conserved, and the blood parrot Hsp40 was closely related to Neolamprologus brichardi. Blood parrot Hsp40 mRNA could be detected in all of the tissues examined and mainly distributed in the cytoplasm. The expression of Hsp40 was upregulated during lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Upregulated Hsp40 inhibited the activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and activated protein 1 (AP-1) and reduced the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 mRNA expression. This study provides a theoretical basis for further exploring the role of Hsp40 gene in the anti-bacterial immunity of blood parrot.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Early severe cerebral edema and chronic hydrocephalus are the primary cause of poor prognosis in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This study investigated the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory cytokines and coagulation factors in the development of severe cerebral edema and chronic hydrocephalus in patients with SAH. METHODS: Patients with SAH enrolled in this study were categorized into mild and severe cerebral edema groups based on the Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Early Brain Edema Score at admission. During long-term follow-up, patients were further classified into hydrocephalus and non-hydrocephalus groups. CSF samples were collected within 48 h post-SAH, and levels of inflammatory cytokines and coagulation factors were measured. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent factors associated with severe cerebral edema and chronic hydrocephalus. The correlation between inflammatory cytokines and coagulation factors was further investigated and validated in a mouse model of SAH. RESULTS: Seventy-two patients were enrolled in the study. Factors from the extrinsic coagulation pathway and inflammatory cytokines were associated with both severe cerebral edema and chronic hydrocephalus. Coagulation products thrombin-antithrombin complexes (TAT) and fibrin, as well as inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-5, IL-7, and IL-4, were independently associated with severe cerebral edema. Additionally, Factor VII, fibrin, IL-2, IL-5, IL-12, TNF-α, and CCL-4 were independently associated with chronic hydrocephalus. A positive correlation between extrinsic coagulation factors and inflammatory cytokines was observed. In the SAH mouse model, tissue plasminogen activator was shown to alleviate neuroinflammation and cerebral edema, potentially by restoring glymphatic-meningeal lymphatic function. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and extrinsic coagulation pathway factors in the CSF are associated with the development of early severe cerebral edema and chronic hydrocephalus following SAH. These factors are interrelated and may contribute to post-SAH glymphatic-meningeal lymphatic dysfunction.

RESUMEN

Zirconium alloys possess excellent wear resistance, which ensures the durability and longevity of the components, making them widely used in medical and other fields. To enhance the functionality of these materials, it is often necessary to fabricate functional microstructures on their surfaces. Electrochemical machining (ECM) techniques demonstrate excellent machining performance for these metals, particularly in the processing of microstructures on complex curved surfaces. However, ECM often faces challenges due to the fluid nature of the electrolyte, resulting in low machining accuracy and localization. This paper proposes a novel method for fabricating complex patterned microstructures using a maskless electrochemical direct writing technique with a polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer electrolyte. By leveraging the non-Newtonian properties of PAM, this method effectively confines the electrolyte to specific areas, thus addressing the issue of poor localization in traditional ECM and reducing stray corrosion. To elucidate the electrochemical removal mechanism of Zr702 in the presence of PAM, polarization curves, viscosity characteristics, and current efficiency parameters were analyzed. Additionally, an experimental study was conducted using a custom-designed nozzle structure. The results showed that the PAM electrolyte could effectively reduce the EF, positively impacting machining accuracy and localization. By controlling the nozzle's motion trajectory, complex microstructures were successfully fabricated through direct writing, demonstrating promising application prospects.

RESUMEN

The exposure of protein molecules to interfaces may cause protein aggregation and particle formation in protein formulations, especially hydrophobic interfaces, which may promote protein aggregation in solution. In this study, we found that modification of the surface properties by application of a hydrophobic Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) could reduce the generation of protein aggregates and particles in protein solution induced by fluid shear. A stable protein adsorption layer was formed at the hydrophobic interface through the strong hydrophobic interaction between the protein and hydrophobic surface, which could prevent the aggregated protein from falling off into the bulk solution to form subvisible particles and insoluble protein aggregates. In addition, human complement enzyme linked immunosorbent assay results showed that the particles that were generated in the OTS-coated container did not activate human complement which indicated the OTS-coated container could be used as primary containers for certain types of monoclonal antibody formulation.

RESUMEN

Photocatalytic reforming of ethanol provides an effective way to produce hydrogen energy using natural and nontoxic ethanol as raw material. Developing highly efficient catalysts is central to this field. Although traditional semiconductor/metal heterostructures (e.g., Rh/TiO2) can result in relatively high catalyst performance by promoting the separation of photoinduced hot carriers, it will still be highly promising to further improve the catalytic performance via a cost-effective and convenient method. In this study, we developed a highly efficient photocatalyst for ethanol reformation by preparing a ternary composite structure of Rh/TiO2/g-C3N4. Hydrogen is the main product, and the reaction rate could reach up to 27.5 mmol g-1 h-1, which is ∼1.41-fold higher than that of Rh/TiO2. The catalytic performance here is highly dependent on the wavelength of the light illumination. Moreover, the photocatalytic reforming of ethanol and production of hydrogen were also dependent on the Rh loading and g-C3N4:TiO2 ratio in Rh/TiO2/g-C3N4 composites as well as the ethanol content in the reaction system. The mechanism of the enhanced hydrogen production in Rh/TiO2/g-C3N4 is determined as the improvement in the separation of photoinduced hot carriers. This work provides an effective photocatalyst for ethanol reforming, largely expanding its application in the field of renewable energy and interface science.

RESUMEN

Background: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a prodromal stage of dementia, characterized by cognitive decline exceeding that expected with normal aging. Exercise interventions have emerged as a promising approach to counter functional decline and enhance cognitive function in the elderly MCI population. However, the optimal exercise modalities and dosage (dose-response relationship) are understudied. Objective: It aims to determine the most effective exercise modality for MCI patients by optimizing the dose-response relationship to ensure sufficient intensity to induce positive neurological adaptations. Methods: A systematic search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted from inception to April 15, 2024. Studies evaluating the efficacy of exercise interventions in MCI participants were included. Primary outcomes of interest are global cognition and executive function. Random-effects models will be utilized for both pairwise and network meta-analysis. Results: Following the application of specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 42 articles, encompassing 2832 participants, were chosen for inclusion in a network meta-analysis. The findings revealed that multi-component exercise demonstrated superior efficacy in mitigating the deterioration of global cognition, as evidenced by standard mean differences (SMDs) of 1.09 (95% CI: 0.68 to 1.51) compared to passive controls. Additionally, multi-component exercise exhibited a significant impact on executive function, with SMDs of 2.50 (95% CI: 0.88 to 4.12) when contrasted with passive controls. Our research has demonstrated that sessions lasting 30 minutes, occurring 3-4 times per week, with interventions lasting 12-24 weeks and an intensity of 60-85% of maximum heart rate, yield higher effect sizes in improving global cognition. However, sessions lasting 30-61 minutes, with interventions lasting 25 weeks or longer, show greater effectiveness in enhancing executive function. Conclusion: A network meta-analysis identified multi-component exercise as the most effective intervention for improving global cognitive and executive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment. Notably, moderate-intensity exercise performed at least three times weekly appears beneficial, with evidence suggesting shorter sessions and higher frequencies may optimize cognitive outcomes. RESUMEN

With the rapid development of the construction industry worldwide, a large amount of waste concrete is generated each year, which has caused serious environmental problems. As a green and sustainable building material, thermally activated recycled cement (RC) has received widespread attention. However, the unique properties of RC, such as the high water demand and short setting time, necessitate the use of specialized superplasticizers that are different from those used in ordinary Portland cement. As an important component for the application of RC, superplasticizer has an important impact on the performance modification of RC. This article summarizes the recent research progress of potential superplasticizers for RC, with a view to providing a reference for the research and application of superplasticizers for RC. Based on the differences between ordinary Portland cement and RC, the paper discusses potential superplasticizers that may be suitable for RC, and points out that future development of potential modified superplasticizers can include altering the molecular structure to improve adsorption onto the surfaces of RC or to enhance the durability of concrete with RC.

RESUMEN

Machine learning potential (MLP) has been a popular topic in recent years for its capability to replace expensive first-principles calculations in some large systems. Meanwhile, message passing networks have gained significant attention due to their remarkable accuracy, and a wave of message passing networks based on Cartesian coordinates has emerged. However, the information of the node in these models is usually limited to scalars, and vectors. In this work, we propose High-order Tensor message Passing interatomic Potential (HotPP), an E(n) equivariant message passing neural network that extends the node embedding and message to an arbitrary order tensor. By performing some basic equivariant operations, high order tensors can be coupled very simply and thus the model can make direct predictions of high-order tensors such as dipole moments and polarizabilities without any modifications. The tests in several datasets show that HotPP not only achieves high accuracy in predicting target properties, but also successfully performs tasks such as calculating phonon spectra, infrared spectra, and Raman spectra, demonstrating its potential as a tool for future research.

RESUMEN

To elucidate the mechanisms underlying photoperiodic responses, we investigated the genomic and metabolomic responses of two broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) genotypes. For this purpose, light-insensitive (D32) and light-sensitive (M51) genotypes were exposed to a 16 h photoperiod (long-day (LD) conditions) and an 8 h photoperiod (short-day (SD) conditions), and various transcriptomic and metabolomic changes were investigated. A total of 1664, 2564, 13,017, and 15548 DEGs were identified in the SD-D, LD-D, LD-M, and SD-M groups, respectively. Furthermore, 112 common DEGs were identified as well. Interestingly, most DEGs in the different groups were associated with photosynthesis and phenylpropanoid and carotenoid biosynthesis. In addition, 822 metabolites were identified under different treatments. The main metabolites, including L-malic and fumaric acids, were identified in the negative mode, whereas brucine and loperamide were identified in the positive mode. KEGG analysis revealed that the metabolites in the different groups were enriched in the same metabolic pathway of the TCA cycle. Furthermore, in negative mode, the metabolites of M51 were mainly D-glucose, whereas those of D32 were mainly L-malic and fumaric acids. One photoperiod candidate gene (C2845_PM11G01290), annotated as ATP6B, significantly increased the levels of L-malic and fumaric acids. In conclusion, our study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the molecular mechanisms of photoperiodic response regulation and can be used as a reference for marker development and resource identification in Panicum miliaceum L..

RESUMEN

Guidewire-based pressure measurement is essential for diagnosing coronary artery disease. However, the impact of the guidewire on local hemodynamics and diagnostic outcomes is not fully understood. In this study, we propose a generalized reduced-order model (ROM) to accurately predict the trans-stenotic pressure drop in arteries. A key advantage of this model is that the viscous term does not rely on empirical parameters, making it applicable to both scenarios with and without guidewire insertion, and across varying stenosis severities. The proposed model demonstrates good accuracy compared to 3D idealized numerical models, achieving an average prediction error of 3.61% for cases without a guidewire and 4.53% for cases with a guidewire. Furthermore, when applied to a patient-specific model, it achieves comparable or better results than previously published ROMs. Finally, this ROM is employed to investigate the shifting relative importance of different components of the trans-stenotic pressure drop at various stenosis severities, and to provide further insights into the guidewire's influence on FFR measurements.

RESUMEN

The development of novel phototheranostic agents with significant potential in bioimaging-guided therapy is highly desirable for precise tumor therapy. Herein, NIR laser-activated ruthenium phthalocyanine (PcRu) loaded sub-30 nm targeting lipid nanoparticles (α-PcRu-NPs) were fabricated for photoacoustic imaging (PAI)-guided photothermal therapy (PTT). Due to the formation of J-type aggregation of PcRu in the core of the nanostructure, the α-PcRu-NPs exhibited high stability, efficient NIR absorption, reduced singlet oxygen generation, high photothermal activity, and intense photoacoustic signal. With the M2 macrophage target peptide (M2pep) modification and small size of α-PcRu-NPs, in vivo evaluations reveal that α-PcRu-NPs can specifically target and deeply penetrate the tumor foci. Under a high contrast PAI guidance with α-PcRu-NPs (744 nm, 0.35 µW), it also realizes superior photothermal therapy (PTT) for breast cancer under 670 nm laser irradiation (0.5 W/cm2). The prominent therapeutic efficacy of α-PcRu-NP-based PTT not only directly kills tumor cells, but also enhances the immune response by promoting dendritic cell maturation and increasing cytotoxic T cell infiltration. Thus, this work broadens the applications of phthalocyanine derivatives as phototheranostics in the PAI-guided PTT field.

RESUMEN

Conductive organohydrogels are promising for strain sensing, while their weak mechanical properties, poor crack propagation resistance and unstable sensing signals during long-term use have seriously limited their applications as high-performance strain sensors. Here, we propose a facile method, i.e., solvent exchange assisted hot-pressing, to prepare strong yet tough, transparent and anti-fatigue ionically conductive organohydrogels (ICOHs). The densified polymeric network and improved crystallinity endow ICOHs with excellent mechanical properties. The tensile strength, toughness, fracture energy and fatigue threshold of ICOHs can reach 36.12 ± 4.15 MPa, 54.57 ± 2.89 MJ m-3, 43.44 ± 8.54 kJ m-2 and 1212.86 ± 57.20 J m-2, respectively, with a satisfactory fracture strain of 266 ± 33%. In addition, ICOH strain sensors with freezing and drying resistance exhibit excellent cycling stability (10 000 cycles). More importantly, the fatigue resistance allows the notched strain sensor to work normally with no crack propagation and output stable and reliable sensing signals. Overall, the unique flaw-insensitive strain sensing makes ICOHs promising in the field of wearable and durable electronics.

RESUMEN

Exfoliation from quaternary hexagonal MAB (h-MAB) phases has been suggested as a method for producing 2D in-plane ordered MBenes (i-MBenes) with the general formula (M'2/3M″1/3)2AB2. However, experimental realization of defect-free i-MBenes has not been achieved yet due to the absence of a suitable parent quaternary h-MAB phase. In this study, a machine learning (ML) model is used to predict the stability of 15771 quaternary h-MAB phases generated by considering 33 transition metals for the M site and 16 p-block elements for the A site. Out of these compounds, only 195 are identified as potentially stable. Subsequent high-precision first-principles calculations confirm that 47 of them exhibit both thermodynamic and dynamic stability. Their potential for exfoliation into bimetallic i-MBenes is investigated by bonding analysis. Leveraging these theoretical insights, a bimetallic i-MBene is successfully synthesized, namely 2D Mo2ErB3T2.5 (T = F, Cl and O). Further experimental scrutiny reveals its excellent performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), highlighting the application potential of bimetallic i-MBenes.

RESUMEN

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used in the classification and evaluation of osteoarthritis (OA). Many studies have focused on knee OA, investigating the association between MRI-detected knee structural abnormalities and knee pain. Hip OA differs from knee OA in many aspects, but little is known about the role of hip structural abnormalities in hip pain. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the association of hip abnormalities on MRI, such as cartilage defects, bone marrow lesions (BMLs), osteophytes, paralabral cysts, effusion-synovitis, and subchondral cysts, with hip pain. We searched electronic databases from inception to February 2024, to identify publications that reported data on the association between MRI features in the hip joint and hip pain. The quality of the included studies was scored using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). The levels of evidence were evaluated according to the Cochrane Back Review Group Method Guidelines and classified into five levels: strong, moderate, limited, conflicting, and no evidence. A total of nine studies were included, comprising five cohort studies, three cross-sectional studies, and one case-control study. Moderate level of evidence suggested a positive association of the presence and change of BMLs with the severity and progress of hip pain, and evidence for the associations between other MRI features and hip pain were limited or even conflicting. Only a few studies with small to modest sample sizes evaluated the association between hip structural changes on MRI and hip pain. BMLs may contribute to the severity and progression of hip pain. Further studies are warranted to uncover the role of hip MRI abnormalities in hip pain. The protocol for the systematic review was registered with PROSPERO ( https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/ , CRD42023401233).

RESUMEN

A precise radiotherapy plan is crucial to ensure accurate segmentation of glioblastomas (GBMs) for radiation therapy. However, the traditional manual segmentation process is labor-intensive and heavily reliant on the experience of radiation oncologists. In this retrospective study, a novel auto-segmentation method is proposed to address these problems. To assess the method's applicability across diverse scenarios, we conducted its development and evaluation using a cohort of 148 eligible patients drawn from four multicenter datasets and retrospective data collection including noncontrast CT, multisequence MRI scans, and corresponding medical records. All patients were diagnosed with histologically confirmed high-grade glioma (HGG). A deep learning-based method (PKMI-Net) for automatically segmenting gross tumor volume (GTV) and clinical target volumes (CTV1 and CTV2) of GBMs was proposed by leveraging prior knowledge from multimodal imaging. The proposed PKMI-Net demonstrated high accuracy in segmenting, respectively, GTV, CTV1, and CTV2 in an 11-patient test set, achieving Dice similarity coefficients (DSC) of 0.94, 0.95, and 0.92; 95% Hausdorff distances (HD95) of 2.07, 1.18, and 3.95 mm; average surface distances (ASD) of 0.69, 0.39, and 1.17 mm; and relative volume differences (RVD) of 5.50%, 9.68%, and 3.97%. Moreover, the vast majority of GTV, CTV1, and CTV2 produced by PKMI-Net are clinically acceptable and require no revision for clinical practice. In our multicenter evaluation, the PKMI-Net exhibited consistent and robust generalizability across the various datasets, demonstrating its effectiveness in automatically segmenting GBMs. The proposed method using prior knowledge in multimodal imaging can improve the contouring accuracy of GBMs, which holds the potential to improve the quality and efficiency of GBMs' radiotherapy.

RESUMEN

A biomass CS/CNTs@MTMS (MCCS) aerogel with both aligned channel network, superhydrophobicity, and photothermal conversion ability was prepared by a green and facile strategy of directed freeze-drying and chemical vapor deposition using chitosan (CS), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as the building materials. Capacity to adsorb a large variety of oils and organic solvents, with an adsorption capacity of up to 34-83 g/g. After 10 cycles, the adsorption capacity of MCCS remained at 94 % of the initial capacity, providing excellent reusability. In addition, due to its unique network of aligned channels, the MCCS can continuously separate oil and water, making it a sustainable oil-water separator. More interestingly, the MCCS aerogel has excellent photothermal conversion capabilities, and it was utilized to evaporate oil collected during the oil-water separation process using solar energy. This work provides an opportunity to design novel self-cleaning photothermally driven oil-water separation biomass materials with superhydrophobicity-strong lipophilicity.
