RESUMEN

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening disorder of liver function. Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a tryptophan metabolite formed along the kynurenine metabolic pathway, possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Its presence in food and its potential role in the digestive system was recently reported. The aim of this study was to define the effect of KYNA on liver failure. The Wistar rat model of thioacetamide-induced liver injury was used. Morphological and biochemical analyses as well as the measurement of KYNA content in liver and hepatoprotective herbal remedies were conducted. The significant attenuation of morphological disturbances and aspartate and alanine transaminase activities, decrease of myeloperoxidase and tumor necrosis factor-α, and elevation of interleukin-10 levels indicating the protective effect of KYNA in thioacetamide (TAA) - induced liver injury were discovered. In conclusion, the hepatoprotective role of KYNA in an animal model of liver failure was documented and the use of KYNA in the treatment of ALF was suggested.

RESUMEN

Myxoma is a slow growing, benign neoplasm, which pathogenesis still remains disputed. The lesion has well-defined borders but a true capsule is absent. Because of that myxoma can be locally invasive causing bone destruction. A change is mainly observed among persons between 20-30 years of age and is very uncommon in the pediatric population. Most myxomas are observed in myocardium, but rarely may also manifest in the head and neck region. In the paper we describe an unusual case of myxoma of maxillary sinus in a female infant. Diagnostic challenges, treatment, outcome, post-operative follow-up are discussed as well as a review of the literature in order to present many features of this rare pathology.

RESUMEN

To date, it remains unclear whether mild form of acute pancreatitis (AP) may cause myocardial damage which may be asymptomatic for a long time. Pathogenesis of AP-related cardiac injury may be attributed in part to ROS/RNS overproduction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the oxidative stress changes in both the pancreas and the heart and to estimate the protective effects of 1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine (tempol) at the early phase of AP. Cerulein-induced AP led to the development of acute edematous pancreatitis with a significant decrease in the level of sulfhydryl (-SH) groups (oxidation marker) both in heart and in pancreatic tissues as well as a substantial increase in plasma creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) activity (marker of the heart muscle lesion) which confirmed the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of cardiac damage. The tempol treatment significantly reduced the intensity of inflammation and oxidative damage and decreased the morphological evidence of pancreas injury at early AP stages. Moreover, it markedly attenuated AP-induced cardiac damage revealed by normalization of the -SH group levels and CK-MB activity. On the basis of these studies, it is possible to conclude that tempol has a profound protective effect against cardiac and pancreatic damage induced by AP.

RESUMEN

Coexistence of two or even more independent primary tumors derived from the female genital tract organs is a unique event. The most common combination is the coexistence of synchronous tumors in the ovary and endometrium. In the present case study, we described a coincidence of homologous-type cervical carcinosarcoma (CS) with endometrioid-type G1 uterine adenocarcinoma (EC) arising on the basis of hyperplastic endometrium. A panel of immunohistochemical markers was applied, either in both CS components or in endometrioid-type EC, to assess possible differences between both uterine malignancies. We also presented a short overview of the coexistence of cervical carcinosarcomas with other female genital tract malignancies.

RESUMEN

AIM: Adenosquamous (ADSQ) carcinoma accounts for 1-4% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The origin of ADSQ carcinoma and its genetic background is not fully understood. Most studies concerning epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation status are performed in adenocarcinoma, while there is limited information about the prevalence of this mutation in ADSQ-bearing Caucasian patients and the efficacy of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors. METHODS: EGFR gene status has been examined in 1000 non-squamous NSCLC patients of Polish origin. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by DNA fragment length analysis and allele-specific PCR as well as real-time PCR technique were used to estimate EGFR gene status. Complete clinical data were obtained for all examined patients. RESULTS: In the group of 1000 non-squamous NSCLC patients, ADSQ was diagnosed in 14 (1.4%) cases. Activating mutations of EGFR were observed in 28.6% (four out of 14) of ADSQ-bearing patients and included deletions of 15 base-pairs in exon 19 in three cases (one man and two women) and substitution of L861Q with coexistence of G719X mutation in one non-smoking male patient. Deletions were diagnosed in two non-smoking patients and one current-smoking female patient (50 pack-years). One non-smoking man with deletion in exon 19 of EGFR gene was successfully treated with gefitinib in first-line therapy. CONCLUSIONS: EGFR gene mutations in ADSQ carcinoma patients may be more common than previously thought. EGFR mutation testing is appropriate in ADSQ-bearing patients, in which response for molecular-based therapy is predictable.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Use of morcellation during laparoscopic hysterectomy may result in seeding of uterine tissue throughout the abdominal cavity and development of 'iatrogenic' leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata. CASE: Two years after a supracervical laparoscopic hysterectomy a 42-year-old parous women presented with abdominal pain and bloating. CT scans and subsequent surgical exploration reveled multiple solid tumors containing cysts filled with altered blood. Histologically the tumors had characteristic features of a benign leiomyoma with smooth muscle cells infiltrated by endometrial glands. CONCLUSION: Pieces of smooth muscle cell and endometrial uterine tissue lost in the abdominal cavity during morcellation may progress to leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata with unusual appearance.

RESUMEN

The study presents a case of ovarian cancer recurrence in extraperitoneal localization observed after twenty nine years of radical surgery and radiotherapy. New focus of ovarian cancer has been placed near right oval ligament of uterus. Long-term survival and ovarian cancer recurrence in extra-abdominal place may be taken as a confirmation an opinion about a role of multifocal neoplasia of mesothelium in pathogenesis and recurrence of ovarian cancer.
