RESUMEN

The Berry curvature dipole (BCD) serves as a one of the fundamental contributors to emergence of the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE). Despite intense interest due to its potential for new technologies reaching beyond the quantum efficiency limit, the interplay between BCD and NLHE has been barely understood yet in the absence of a systematic study on the electronic band structure. Here, we report NLHE realized in NbIrTe4 that persists above room temperature coupled with a sign change in the Hall conductivity at 150 K. First-principles calculations combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that BCD tuned by the partial occupancy of spin-orbit split bands via temperature is responsible for the temperature-dependent NLHE. Our findings highlight the correlation between BCD and the electronic band structure, providing a viable route to create and engineer the non-trivial Hall effect by tuning the geometric properties of quasiparticles in transition-metal chalcogen compounds.

Non-centrosymmetric topological material has attracted intense attention due to its superior characteristics as compared with the centrosymmetric one, although probing the local quantum geometry in non-centrosymmetric topological material remains challenging. The non-linear Hall (NLH) effect provides an ideal tool to investigate the local quantum geometry. Here, we report a non-centrosymmetric topological phase in ZrTe5, probed by using the NLH effect. The angle-resolved and temperature-dependent NLH measurement reveals the inversion and ab-plane mirror symmetries breaking at <30 K, consistently with our theoretical calculation. Our findings identify a new non-centrosymmetric phase of ZrTe5 and provide a platform to probe and control local quantum geometry via crystal symmetries.

Patient blood management (PBM) guidelines for patients undergoing cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) have increased during the past decade, and pharmacotherapy plays an important role in PBM. In the face of the undefined consistency in the methodologic quality and pharmacotherapy recommendations across multiple guidelines, this study exclusively evaluated methodologies of the related guideline development process, and compiled medication recommendations of PBM for cardiac surgery patients. PBM guidelines for cardiac surgery under CPB were searched through some mainstream literature and guideline databases from database establishment to May 15, 2023. Nine guidelines meeting inclusion criteria were included in this study. The quality of the guidelines was evaluated using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool. "Stakeholder involvement" received the lowest mean score of 49.38% in the AGREE II scoring among the guidelines. PBM for cardiac surgery patients spans the perioperative phase. Drug therapy strategies of PBM for cardiac surgery patients involve anemia therapy, perioperative administration of antithrombotic drugs, intraoperative anticoagulation, and the use of hemostatic drugs. Unlike for adults, there is less evidence about the management of antithrombotic drugs and hemostatic drugs for pediatric cardiac surgery patients. Recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) and desmopressin (DDAVP) are not recommended after pediatric cardiac surgery, whereas prothrombin complex concentrate could be considered in clinical trials. As for the controversies regarding the administration of rFVIIa and DDAVP after adult cardiac surgery by different societies, clinicians should exercise their clinical judgment based on individual patient features.

We report a comprehensive study of the nanoscale inhomogeneity and disorder on the thermoelectric properties of FeSe[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) single crystals and the evolution of correlation strength with S substitution. A hump-like feature in temperature-dependent thermpower is enhanced for x = 0.12 and 0.14 in the nematic region with increasing in orbital-selective electronic correlations, which is strongly suppressed across the nematic critical point and for higher S content. Nanoscale Se/S atom disorder in the tetrahedral surroundings of Fe atoms is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements, providing an insight into the nanostructural details and the evolution of correlation strength in FeSe[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text].

Triazoles are common agents for invasive fungal infections, while therapeutic drug monitoring is needed to improve antifungal efficacy and reduce toxicity. This study aimed to exploit a simple and reliable liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for high-throughput monitoring of antifungal triazoles in human plasma using UPLC-QDa. Triazoles in plasma were separated by chromatography on a Waters BEH C18 column and detected using positive ions electrospray ionization fitted with single ion recording. M+ for fluconazole (m/z 307.11) and voriconazole (m/z 350.12), M2+ for posaconazole (m/z 351.17), itraconazole (m/z 353.13) and ketoconazole (m/z 266.08, IS) were selected as representative ions in single ion recording mode. The standard curves in plasma showed acceptable linearities over 1.25-40 µg/mL for fluconazole, 0.47-15 µg/mL for posaconazole and 0.39-12.5 µg/mL for voriconazole and itraconazole. The selectivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, recovery, matrix effect, and stability met acceptable practice standards under Food and Drug Administration method validation guidelines. This method was successfully applied to the therapeutic monitoring of triazoles in patients with invasive fungal infections, thereby guiding clinical medication.

The Berry curvature and quantum metric are the imaginary part and real part, respectively, of the quantum geometric tensor, which characterizes the topology of quantum states1. The Berry curvature is known to generate a number of important transport phenomena, such as the quantum Hall effect and the anomalous Hall effect2,3; however, the consequences of the quantum metric have rarely been probed by transport measurements. Here we report the observation of quantum-metric-induced nonlinear transport, including both a nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and a diode-like non-reciprocal longitudinal response, in thin films of a topological antiferromagnet, MnBi2Te4. Our observations reveal that the transverse and longitudinal nonlinear conductivities reverse signs when reversing the antiferromagnetic order, diminish above the Néel temperature and are insensitive to disorder scattering, thus verifying their origin in the band-structure topology. They also flip signs between electron- and hole-doped regions, in agreement with theoretical calculations. Our work provides a means to probe the quantum metric through nonlinear transport and to design magnetic nonlinear devices.

Rockbursts have important influences on construction safety, so the risk assessment of rockburst intensity has great significance. Firstly, the depth of the rockburst, the uniaxial compressive strength, the stress concentration coefficients, the brittleness coefficients, and the elastic energy index are selected as the evaluation index. Secondly, an assessment model is developed based on the fuzzy variable theory. And the model is proposed to assess the rockburst intensity in the highway tunnel. Finally, the results demonstrate that the results derived from the proposed model are consistent with the current specifications; the accurate rate comes to 100%. The method can determine the risk level of rockburst intensity and provide an alternative scheme. Hence, the study can accurately present a new approach to assess the rockburst intensity in the future.

Magnetic topological semimetals provide new opportunities for power generation and solid-state cooling based on thermoelectric (TE) effect. The interplay between magnetism and nontrivial band topology prompts the magnetic topological semimetals to yield strong transverse TE effect, while the longitudinal TE performance is usually poor. Herein, it is demonstrated that the magnetic Weyl semimetal TbPtBi has high value for both transverse and longitudinal thermopower with large power factor (PF). At 300 K and 13.5 Tesla, the transverse thermopower and PF reach up to 214 µV K-1 and 35 µW cm-1  K-2 , respectively, which are comparable to those of state-of-the-art TE materials. Combining first-principles calculations, longitudinal magnetoresistance and planar Hall resistance measurements, and two-band model fitting, the large transverse thermopower and PF are attributed to both bipolar effect and large Hall angle. Moreover, the imperfectly compensated charge carriers and large transverse magnetoresistance induce the maximum magneto-longitudinal thermopower of 251 µV K-1 with a PF of 24 µW cm-1  K-2 at 150 K and 13.5 Tesla, which is two times higher than that at zero magnetic field. This work demonstrates the great potential of topological semimetals for TEs and offers a new excellent candidate for magneto-TEs.

BACKGROUND: The association between drinking and Helicobacter pylori infection was not clear in the literature. Owing to mixed and inconclusive results, a meta-analysis was conducted to summarize and clarify this association systematically. METHODS: Based on a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, studies investigating the association between drinking and H. pylori infection were retrieved. We evaluated the strength of this relationship using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted. RESULTS: A total of 24 individual studies were included in this meta-analysis. The risk of H. pylori infection was significantly lower in alcohol drinkers than nondrinkers (OR=0.83). People who drink wine (OR=0.90) or mixed types of alcoholic beverages (OR=0.78) had a lower risk of infection compared with those who drink beer. Among people aged 40 years or older, alcohol drinkers had a lower risk of H. pylori infection than nondrinkers (OR=0.68). Among people less than 40 years of age, alcohol drinking was not associated with H. pylori infection risk. Data showed that women were at a lower risk of H. pylori infection than men (OR=0.86). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests that the risk of H. pylori infection among alcohol drinkers is lower than that of nondrinkers. Drinking wine and mixed types of alcohol are better at reducing H. pylori infection than drinking beer. Nonetheless, we discourage reducing H. pylori infection through drinking, which increases the risk of other diseases.

Radiotherapy (RT) plays a pivotal role in the comprehensive treatment of multiple malignant tumors, exerting its anti-tumor effects through direct induction of double-strand breaks (DSBs) or indirect induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. However, RT resistance remains a therapeutic obstacle that leads to cancer recurrence and treatment failure. In this study, we synthesised a tantalum-carbon-integrated nanozyme with excellent catalase-like (CAT-like) activity and radiosensitivity by immobilising an ultrasmall tantalum nanozyme into a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon nanozyme through in situ reduction. The integrated tantalum nanozyme significantly increased the CAT activity of the carbon nanozyme, which promoted the production of more oxygen and increased the ROS levels. By improving hypoxia and increasing the level of ROS, more DNA DSBs occur at the cellular level, which, in turn, improves the sensitivity of RT. Moreover, tantalum-carbon-integrated nanozymes combined with RT have demonstrated notable anti-tumor activity in vivo. Therefore, exploiting the enzymatic activity and the effect of ROS amplification of this nanozyme has the potential to overcome resistance to RT, which may offer new horizons for nanozyme-based remedies for biomedical applications.

Symmetries, quantum geometries and electronic correlations are among the most important ingredients of condensed matters, and lead to nontrivial phenomena in experiments, for example, non-reciprocal charge transport. Of particular interest is whether the non-reciprocal transport can be manipulated. Here, we report the controllable large non-reciprocal charge transport in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. The current direction relevant resistance is observed at chiral edges, which is magnetically switchable, edge position sensitive and stacking sequence controllable. Applying gate voltage can also effectively manipulate the non-reciprocal response. The observation and manipulation of non-reciprocal charge transport reveals the fundamental role of chirality in charge transport of MnBi2Te4, and pave ways to develop van der Waals spintronic devices by chirality engineering.

Objective: To investigate the mediating effect of resilience on perceived social support and fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) in glioma patients. Methods: A total of 128 glioma patients were enrolled for the survey by Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), perceived social support scale (PSSS) and Chinese version of fear of progression questionnaire-short form (FoP-Q-SF). Structural equation model was used to analyze the effects of resilience. Results: The score of FCR in glioma patients was 29.52±8.30. A total of 47 patients had FCR (total score ≥34), with an incidence of 36.7%. There was a correlation between FCR, resilience and social support (P<0.01). The resilience between perceived social support and FCR in glioma patients had good fitting with the structural equation model. Resilience played a mediating role between perceived social support and FCR, with a mediating effect of 48.4%. Conclusion: The level of resilience can be improved by improving the perceived social support in patients with glioma to reduce the FCR of patients.

Nanoscale inhomogeneity can profoundly impact properties of two-dimensional van der Waals materials. Here, we reveal how sulfur substitution on the selenium atomic sites in Fe1-ySe1-xSx (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, y ≤ 0.1) causes Fe-Ch (Ch = Se, S) bond length differences and strong disorder for 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.8. There, the superconducting transition temperature Tc is suppressed and disorder-related scattering is enhanced. The high-temperature metallic resistivity in the presence of strong disorder exceeds the Mott limit and provides an example of the violation of Matthiessen's rule and the Mooij law, a dominant effect when adding moderate disorder past the Drude/Matthiessen's regime in all materials. The scattering mechanism responsible for the resistivity above the Mott limit is unrelated to phonons and arises for strong Se/S atom disorder in the tetrahedral surrounding of Fe. Our findings shed light on the intricate connection between the nanostructural details and the unconventional scattering mechanism, which is possibly related to charge-nematic or magnetic spin fluctuations.

Connections between crystal chemistry and critical temperature Tc have been in the focus of superconductivity, one of the most widely studied phenomena in physics, chemistry, and materials science alike. In most Fe-based superconductors, materials chemistry and physics conspire so that Tc correlates with the average anion height above the Fe plane, i.e., with the geometry of the FeAs4 or FeCh4 (Ch = Te, Se, or S) tetrahedron. By synthesizing Fe1-ySe1-xSx (0 ≤ x ≤ 1; y ≤ 0.1), we find that in alloyed crystals Tc is not correlated with the anion height like it is for most other Fe superconductors. Instead, changes in Tc(x) and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic (nematic) transition Ts(x) upon cooling are correlated with disorder in Fe vibrations in the direction orthogonal to Fe planes, along the crystallographic c-axis. The disorder stems from the random nature of S substitution, causing deformed Fe(Se,S)4 tetrahedra with different Fe-Se and Fe-S bond distances. Our results provide evidence of Tc and Ts suppression by disorder in anion height. The connection to local crystal chemistry may be exploited in computational prediction of new superconducting materials with FeSe/S building blocks.

Background: Genome-wide association studies for various hemorheological characteristics have not been reported. We aimed to identify genetic loci associated with hemorheological indexes in a cohort of healthy Chinese Han individuals. Methods: Genotyping was performed using Applied Biosystems Axiom™ Precision Medicine Diversity Array in 838 individuals, and 6,423,076 single nucleotide polymorphisms were available for genotyping. The relations were examined in an additive genetic model using mixed linear regression and combined with identical by descent matrix. Results: We identified 38 genetic loci (p < 5 × 10-6) related to hemorheological traits. In which, LOC102724502-OLIG2 rs28371438 was related to the levels of nd30 (p = 8.58 × 10-07), nd300 (p = 1.89 × 10-06), erythrocyte rigidity (p = 1.29 × 10-06), assigned viscosity (p = 6.20 × 10-08) and whole blood high cut relative (p = 7.30 × 10-08). The association of STK32B rs4689231 for nd30 (p = 3.85 × 10-06) and nd300 (p = 2.94 × 10-06) and GTSCR1-LINC01541 rs11661911 for erythrocyte rigidity (p = 9.93 × 10-09) and whole blood high cut relative (p = 2.09 × 10-07) was found. USP25-MIR99AHG rs1297329 was associated with erythrocyte rigidity (p = 1.81 × 10-06) and erythrocyte deformation (p = 1.14 × 10-06). Moreover, the association of TMEM232-SLC25A46 rs3985087 and LINC00470-METTL4 rs9966987 for fibrinogen (p = 1.31 × 10-06 and p = 4.29 × 10-07) and plasma viscosity (p = 1.01 × 10-06 and p = 4.59 × 10-07) was found. Conclusion: These findings may represent biological candidates for hemorheological indexes and contribute to hemorheological study.

This meta-analysis aims to screen the risk factors for severe illness and death and provide help for early clinical treatment of the new coronavirus (COVID-19). Based on a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, we included studies that explored the cause and risk factors for severe illness and death in COVID-19 patients. We evaluated the strength of this relationship using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 17 articles were included; 16 of the 17 articles were from China, and the risk factors associated with severe illness and death were age, sex, and multiple comorbidities. Advanced age (≥65 years, severe illness, OR = 2.62; death, OR = 6.00), male (severe illness, OR = 1.49; death, OR = 1.54), chronic respiratory diseases (severe illness, OR = 5.67; death, OR = 3.72), diabetes (severe illness, OR = 3.27; death, OR = 2.60), hypertension (severe illness, OR = 3.08; death, OR = 3.53), chronic kidney disease (severe illness, OR = 3.59; death, OR = 5.38), and cardiovascular diseases (severe illness, OR = 3.87; death, OR = 4.91) were all risk factors. For COVID-19 patients, advanced age, male, and patients with chronic disease are at higher risk of developing severe illness or even death.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to utilize a population pharmacokinetic method to obtain information about the influence of covariates on the in vivo behavior of digoxin in patients with cardiac insufficiency. METHODS: A total of 228 therapeutic drug monitoring concentrations were retrospectively collected from 176 inpatients. The patients were randomly divided into a modeling group (n = 126) and a validation group (n = 50). The first-order absorption one-compartment model was used to develop a population pharmacokinetic model from a nonlinear mixed effects modeling approach. Sixteen single nucleotide polymorphisms involved in the pharmacokinetic variables of digoxin were identified by using the MassARRAY system. Various demographic parameters, biochemical test values, concomitant medications, and genetic variants were investigated. FINDINGS: The typical population value of digoxin CL/F was 5.06 L/h, and the volume of distribution was 211.82 L. The drug CL/F was significantly related to serum creatinine, in a combination of spironolactone and SLCO4C1 genotypes of 2 variants (rs3114660 and rs3114661). Results of model evaluation and internal/external validation indicated a stable and precise performance of the final model. IMPLICATIONS: For the first time, 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs3114660 and rs3114661) in SLCO4C1 were found to significantly affect the elimination of digoxin in vivo. The final population model may be useful for the individualized dosing of digoxin for patients with cardiac insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Rhomboid domain containing 1 (RHBDD1) plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis. Silibinin, which is a natural extract from milk thistle, has shown anti-tumor effects against various tumors. Here, we investigate whether silibinin affects the function of RHBDD1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell proliferation, migration and invasion. METHODS: The Oncomine database and an immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay were used to determine the RHBDD1 expression levels in lung cancer tissues. The associations between RHBDD1 and overall survival rate or clinicopathological parameters were respectively assessed using the Kaplan-Meier overall survival analysis or Chi-squared test. CCK-8 and Transwell assays were applied to analyze cell proliferation, migration and invasion. A549 cells were incubated with increasing concentrations of silibinin. RHBDD1 knockdown and overexpression were achieved via transfection with si-RHBDD1 or RHBDD1 overexpression plasmid, respectively. Western blotting was performed to measure the expressions of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers. RESULTS: We found that overexpression of RHBDD1 in lung cancer tissues correlates with a poor prognosis of survival. Clinical specimen analysis showed that upregulation of RHBDD1 correlates remarkably well with TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. Silibinin suppresses A549 cell proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT in a dose-dependent manner. Importantly, RHBDD1 was downregulated in silibinin-treated A549 cells. RHBDD1 overexpression reversed the suppressive effects of silibinin on A549 cell proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT expression, while its knockdown enhanced them. CONCLUSIONS: These findings shown an anti-tumor impact of silibinin on NSCLC cells via repression of RHBDD1.
