RESUMEN

Conventional maximum intensity projection (MIP) images tend to ignore some morphological features in the detection of intracranial aneurysms, resulting in missed detection and misdetection. To solve this problem, a new method for intracranial aneurysm detection based on omni-directional MIP image is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the three-dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images were projected with the maximum density in all directions to obtain the MIP images. Then, the region of intracranial aneurysm was prepositioned by matching filter. Finally, the Squeeze and Excitation (SE) module was used to improve the CaraNet model. Excitation and the improved model were used to detect the predetermined location in the omni-directional MIP image to determine whether there was intracranial aneurysm. In this paper, 245 cases of images were collected to test the proposed method. The results showed that the accuracy and specificity of the proposed method could reach 93.75% and 93.86%, respectively, significantly improved the detection performance of intracranial aneurysms in MIP images.

Glycans have been proven to play special roles in keeping human health as a class of nutritional and bioactive ingredients in many food materials. However, their broad use in the food industry is hindered by the lack of comprehensive analytical methods for high-quality food glycomics studies and large-quantity raw materials for their production. This study focuses on structural identification and quantitative comparison of bioactive N-glycans in seven species of livestock and poultry plasma as potential natural glycan resources by a novel comprehensive relative quantification strategy based on stable isotope labeling with nondeuterated and deuterated 4-methyl-1-(2-hydrazino-2-oxoethyl)-pyridinium bromide (d0/d7-HMP) in combination with linkage-specific derivatization of sialic acid residues. Methodological validation of the method in terms of detection sensitivity, signal resolution, quantification linearity, precision, and accuracy on model neutral and complicated sialylated glycans demonstrated its advantages over the existing methods. Based on this method, a series of bioactive N-glycans were found in seven species of livestock and poultry plasma, and their differences in structure, abundance percentages, and relative contents of N-glycans were revealed, demonstrating their excellent applicability for comprehensive food glycomics analysis and great exploitation potential of these plasma samples as large-quantity raw materials in producing bioactive N-glycans for application in food and pharmaceutical industries.

BACKGROUND: To achieve potential financial savings and avoid exposing the patients to unnecessary risk, an optimal diagnostic strategy to identify low risk individual who may derive minimal benefit from further cardiac imaging testing (CIT) is important for patients with stable chest pain (SCP) suggestive of chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). Although several diagnostic strategies have been recommended by the most recent guidelines, few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have prospectively investigated the actual effect of applying these strategies in clinical practice. METHODS: OPERATE (OPtimal Evaluation of stable chest pain to Reduce unnecessAry utilization of cardiac imaging TEsting) trial is an investigator-initiated, multicenter, coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-based, 2-arm parallel-group, double-blind, pragmatic and confirmative RCT planning to include 800 subjects with SCP suggestive of CCS. After enrollment, all subjects will be randomized to two arms (2016 U.K. National Institute of Health and Care Excellence guideline-determined and 2019 European Society of Cardiology guideline-determined diagnostic strategy) on a 1:1 basis. According to each strategy, CCTA should be referred and deferred for a subject in high and low risk group, respectively. The primary (effectiveness) endpoint is CCTA without obstructive coronary artery disease. Safety of each strategy will be mainly assessed by 1-year major adverse cardiovascular event rates. DISCUSSION: The OPERATE trial will provide comparative effectiveness and safety evidences for two different diagnostic strategies for patients with SCP suggestive of CCS, with the intension of improving the diagnostic yield of CCTA at no expense of safety. Background Coronary Artery Disease Reporting and Data System (CAD-RADS) was developed to standardize and optimize disease management in patients after coronary CT angiography (CCTA), but the impact of CAD-RADS management recommendations on clinical outcomes remains unclear. Purpose To retrospectively assess the association between the appropriateness of post-CCTA management according to CAD-RADS version 2.0 and clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods From January 2016 to January 2018, consecutive participants with stable chest pain referred for CCTA were prospectively included in a Chinese registry and followed for 4 years. Retrospectively, CAD-RADS 2.0 classification and the appropriateness of post-CCTA management were determined. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to adjust for confounding variables. Hazard ratios (HRs) for a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE), relative risks for invasive coronary angiography (ICA), and the corresponding number needed to treat were estimated. Results Of the 14 232 included participants (mean age, 61 years ± 13 [SD]; 8852 male), 2330, 2756, and 2614 were retrospectively categorized in CAD-RADS 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Only 26% of participants with CAD-RADS 1-2 disease and 20% with CAD-RADS 3 received appropriate post-CCTA management. After PSM, appropriate post-CCTA management was associated with lower risk of MACEs (HR, 0.34; 95% CI: 0.22, 0.51; P < .001), corresponding to a number needed to treat of 21 in CAD-RADS 1-2 but not CAD-RADS 3 (HR, 0.86; 95% CI: 0.49, 1.85; P = .42). Appropriate post-CCTA management was associated with decreased use of ICA in CAD-RADS 1-2 (relative risk, 0.40; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.55; P < .001) and 3 (relative risk, 0.33; 95% CI: 0.28, 0.39; P < .001), resulting in a number needed to treat of 14 and 2, respectively. Conclusion In this retrospective secondary analysis, appropriate disease management after CCTA according to CAD-RADS 2.0 was associated with lower risk of MACEs and more prudent use of ICA. Background: Among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic coronary syndrome (CCS), non-culprit lesions (NCLs) are responsible for a substantial number of future major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). Thus, we aimed to establish the natural history relationship between adverse plaque characteristics (APCs) of NCLs non-invasively identified by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and subsequent MACEs in these patients. Methods: Between January 2016 and January 2019, 523 patients with DM and CCS were included in the present study after CCTA and successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). All patients were followed up for MACEs (the composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and unplanned coronary revascularization) until January 2022, and the independent clinical event committee classified MACEs as indeterminate, culprit lesion (CL), and NCL-related. The primary outcome was MACEs arising from untreated NCLs during the follow-up. The association between plaque characteristics detected by CCTA and primary outcomes was determined by Marginal Cox proportional hazard regression. Results: Overall, 1,248 NCLs of the 523 patients were analyzed and followed up for a median of 47 months. The cumulative rates of indeterminate, CL, and NCL-related MACEs were 2.3%, 14.5%, and 20.5%, respectively. On multivariate analysis, NCLs associated with recurrent MACEs were more likely to be characterized by a plaque burden >70% [hazard ratio (HR), 4.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.92-6.44], a low-density non-calcified plaque (LDNCP) volume >30 mm3 (HR: 3.40, 95% CI: 2.07-5.56), a minimal luminal area (MLA) <4 mm2 (HR: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.57-3.36), or a combination of three APCs (HR: 13.69, 95% CI: 9.34-20.12, p < 0.0001) than those not associated with recurrent MACEs. Sensitivity analysis regarding all indeterminate MACEs as NCL-related ones demonstrated similar results. Conclusions: In DM patients who presented with CCS and underwent PCI, half of the MACEs occurring during the follow-up were attributable to recurrence at the site of NCLs. NCLs responsible for unanticipated MACEs were frequently characterized by a large plaque burden and LDNCP volume, a small MLA, or a combination of these APCs, as determined by CCTA.

BACKGROUND: The lack of analysis of brain networks in individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an obstacle to detecting and preventing neurological complications of ESRD. PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the correlation between brain activity and ESRD based on a quantitative analysis of the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) of brain networks. It provides insights into differences in brain functional connectivity between healthy individuals and ESRD patients and aims to identify the brain activities and regions most relevant to ESRD. METHODS: Differences in brain functional connectivity between healthy individuals and ESRD patients were analyzed and quantitatively evaluated in this study. Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals obtained through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) were used as information carriers. First, a connectivity matrix of dFC was constructed for each subject using Pearson correlation. Then a high-order connectivity matrix was built by applying the "correlation's correlation" method. Second, sparsification of the high-order connectivity matrix was performed using the graphical least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (gLASSO) model. The discriminative features of the sparse connectivity matrix were extracted and sifted using central moments and t-tests, respectively. Finally, feature classification was conducted using a support vector machine (SVM). RESULTS: The experiment showed that functional connectivity was reduced to some degree in certain brain regions of ESRD patients. The sensorimotor, visual, and cerebellum subnetworks had the highest numbers of abnormal functional connectivities. It is inferred that these three subnetworks most likely have a direct relationship to ESRD. CONCLUSIONS: The low-order and high-order dFC features can identify the positions where brain damage occurs in ESRD patients. In contrast to healthy individuals, the damaged brain regions and the disruption of functional connectivity in ESRD patients were not limited to specific regions. This indicates that ESRD has a severe impact on brain function. Abnormal functional connectivity was mainly associated with the three functional brain regions responsible for visual processing, emotional, and motor control. The findings presented here have the potential for use in the detection, prevention, and prognostic evaluation of ESRD.

Background: Previous studies have shown that patients with a history of atrial fibrillation (AF) have a higher risk of developing coronary slow flow (CSF). However, whether AF episode status affects the incidence of CSF has not been confirmed. This study investigated the correlation between AF episode status and the incidence of CSF. Methods: We enrolled patients with AF who underwent coronary angiography for symptoms of myocardial ischemia between January 1, 2017, and April 30, 2022, at our institution and classified them according to whether they had an episode of AF in the perioperative period. The outcomes were defined the occurrence of CSF overall and in each of the three coronary arteries. The analysis was repeated after adjusting the baseline information by the propensity score matching method in a 1:1 ratio. Results: 214 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study (AF episode group: 100 patients, AF non-episode group: 114 patients). Before matching, age, left atrial size, ejection fraction, heart rate, CSF incidence, and mean corrected thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame counts were higher in patients with intraoperative AF episodes than in patients without episodes. To prevent the dependent variable (CSF incidence) from being confounded by confounding factors, we matched the two groups for age, left atrial size, and ejection fraction. In the logistic regression analysis, the incidence of CSF was significantly higher in the intraoperative AF episode group (P = 0.010, OR = 2.327, 95% CI: 1.226-4.416) than in the non-episode group. Conclusion: In patients with AF, AF episode status is significantly correlated with an increased overall incidence of CSF.

It is of great significance to develop electrochemical sensors based on novel functional nanomaterials for heavy metal ions detection. In this work, a novel Bi/Bi2O3 co-doped porous carbon composite (Bi/Bi2O3@C) was prepared by simple carbonization of bismuth-based metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs). The micromorphology, internal structure, crystal and elemental composition, specific surface area and porous structure of the composite were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and BET. Further, a sensitive electrochemical sensor for Pb2+ detection was constructed by modifying Bi/Bi2O3@C on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) based on the square wave anodic stripping voltammetric (SWASV). The different factors affecting the analytical performance were optimized systematically, such as material modification concentration, deposition time, deposition potential, and pH value. Under optimized conditions, the proposed sensor exhibited a wide linear range from 37.5 nM to 2.0 µM with a low detection limit of 6.3 nM. Meanwhile, the proposed sensor showed good stability, acceptable reproducibility, and satisfactory selectivity. The reliability of the as-proposed sensor was confirmed by the ICP-MS method for Pb2+ detection in different samples.

Being a rare malignancy, adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) exhibits aggressiveness and poor prognosis. Fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5) is a transmembrane protein involved in multiple types of cancer. Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B10 (AKR1B10) has a suppressive role in ACC. The present study aimed to investigate the role of FNDC5 in ACC cells as well as its mechanisms related to AKR1B10. The Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis database predicted FNDC5 expression in tumour tissue of patients suffering from ACC and the overall survival rate. Western blotting as well as reverse transcription-quantitative PCR were used for the examination of the transfection efficiency of FNDC5-overexpression vector (Oe-FNDC5) and small interfering (si)RNA against AKR1B10. Cell Counting Kit-8 was employed for the assessment of cell viability. The proliferation, migration and invasion of the transfected cells were assessed by 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine staining, wound healing and Transwell assays. Additionally, cell apoptosis was evaluated by flow cytometry and caspase-3 activity was determined by ELISA. The levels of epithelial-mesenchymal transition- and 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mTOR signalling pathway-associated proteins were assessed by western blotting. The interaction between FNDC5 and AKR1B10 was confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation. FNDC5 levels in ACC tissue were reduced compared with normal tissue. After overexpressing FNDC5, proliferation, migration and invasion of NCI-H295R cells were suppressed, while cell apoptosis was promoted. FNDC5 interacted with AKR1B10 and AKR1B10 knockdown promoted proliferation, migration and invasion while inhibiting the apoptosis of NCI-H295R cells transfected with si-AKR1B10. The AMPK/mTOR signalling pathway was activated by FNDC5 overexpression, which was subsequently suppressed by AKR1B10 knockdown. Collectively, FNDC5 overexpression inhibited proliferation, migration and invasion while promoting apoptosis of NCI-H295R cells via triggering the AMPK/mTOR signalling pathway. These effects were counteracted by AKR1B10 knockdown.

Purpose: A longer stent is associated with adverse events after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, little information is available on the relationship between stent length and periprocedural prognosis in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We aimed to assess the target vessel stent length influence on angiographic outcomes and in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) during primary PCI in patients with STEMI. Patients and Methods: This single-center retrospective observational study included 246 patients with STEMI admitted to the Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital between January 2019 and December 2021, who underwent primary PCI and successful stent implantation. The exclusion criteria included left main lesion, multiple diseased vessel-stenting, bleeding disorders, contrast allergy, and incomplete data. Patients were divided into two groups based on the median stents length: group A (≤29 mm, n=125) and group B (>29mm, n=121). Periprocedural outcomes were slow flow/no-reflow (SF-NR) and in-hospital MACE, which included acute heart failure, malignant arrhythmia, cardiovascular death, non-fatal stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and urgent revascularization. Multivariate logistic analyses were used to explore the correlation between stent length and SF-NR. Results: A total of 246 patients (82.9% males) with a mean age of 59.9±12.6 years were included in the analysis. The incidence of SF-NR was significantly higher in group B than in group A (36.4% vs 23.2%, p=0.024). However, the in-hospital MACE incidence rate was similar between the two groups (7.2% vs 7.4%, p=0.943). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that stent length and diameter, and peak troponin I level were independent risk factors for SF-NR. Conclusion: Excessive stent length is an independent risk factor for SF-NR, without any significant influence on the risk of MACE during hospitalization.

Glycomics analysis has been undermined by the lack of structurally defined individual glycans as model compounds. However, it is challenging to prepare individual glycans from natural resources, mainly due to separation difficulties caused by highly diverse structure, complicated mixture form and chromophore-free property of naturally-existing glycans. In this study, we report a simple, universal and low-cost glycan separation strategy, glycoselection, which allows preparation of individual reducing glycans from their mixtures through reversible chromogenic derivatization by hydrazide chemistry in combination with two-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography (2D-HPLC). Investigations on reaction conditions using lactose and maltodextrin as model glycans showed the feasibility of reversible hydrazide labeling and one-pot hydrazone conversion under mild conditions, the good stability of hydrazone-form derivatives of glycans in solution and the difference among seven selected hydrazine-carrying chromogenic reagents in product yields during glycan labeling and post-column detagging. The 2D-HPLC separation conditions were established on maltodextrin, from which fourteen highly-purified individual reducing oligo-glucans were ultimately obtained. Using this strategy, we also successfully prepared and identified eleven individual neutral reducing N-glycans from chicken ovalbumin and thirteen individual neutral reducing oligosaccharides and eight individual sialylated ones from human milk, demonstrating its good applicability to different types of reducing glycans as well as biological samples. Given the compatibility of individual reducing glycans with almost all of glycan derivatization protocols and analytical techniques of glycans and the potential of the method for larger scale application, this work provides a universal approach to compound-specific analysis of natural glycans and has great significance for glycomics studies.

Sialylated human milk oligosaccharides (SHMOs) possess unique biological activities. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of SHMOs at different lactation stages are limited by interference from neutral oligosaccharides, glycan structural complexity, and low detection sensitivity. Herein, our previously developed glycoqueuing strategy was improved and applied to enable an isomer-specific quantitative comparison of SHMOs between colostrum milk (CM) and mature milk (MM). A total of 49 putative structures were determined, including 1 α2,6-linked and 13 α2,3-linked isomers separated from seven newly discovered SHMO compositions. The content of most oligosaccharides was more than 50% lower in MM than in CM, and α2,3-sialylation was observed in 43.74% of SHMOs from CM and 22.95% of SHMOs from MM. Finally, the fucosylation level of the SHMOs increased from 16.45 to 22.28% with prolonged lactation. These findings provide the basis for further studies on the structure-activity relationship of SHMOs and a blueprint to improve infant formula.

In this study, we obtained all the homogeneous LBGP70 (arabinogalactan-protein complex), LBGP70-OL (sugar chain of LBGP70), and LBGP70-OL-I (backbone part of LBGP70-OL) fraction from crude Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) by stepwise precipitation. The structural features of LBGP70-OL were investigated by a series of analytical techniques and chemical methods, which was identified as a highly branched polysaccharide with an average of 9 branches per 10 sugar backbone units. The backbone was only →6)-ß-Galp-(1→ residues, substituted at the C3 position. The side chains contained ß-Galp-(1→, α-Araf-(1→, α-Araf-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-Araf-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-Araf-(1→, α-Araf-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-Gap-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-Galp-(1→, α-Araf-(1 â†’ [5)-ß-Araf-(1]4 â†’ 3)-ß-Galp-(1→. LBGP70-OL had the highest anti-ageing activity, with its side chain and backbone exhibiting a synergistic effect. LBGP70-OL exerted the anti-ageing activity by attenuating SA-ß-Gal activity, preventing cell cycle arrest, increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, protecting the cell membranes from oxidative damage, and regulating the senescence-related genes Sirt1, NAMPT, and Prx1. These results lay the fundamental for further studies on the structure-function relationships of LBP.

Abnormal brain structural connectivity of end-stage renal disease(ESRD) is associated with cognitive impairment. However, the characteristics of cortical structural connectivity have not been investigated in ESRD patients. Here, we study structural connectivity of the entire cerebral cortex using a fiber connectivity density(FiCD) mapping method derived from diffusion tensor imaging(DTI) data of 25 ESRD patients and 20 healthy controls, and between-group differences were compared in a vertexwise manner. We also investigated the associations between these abnormal cortical connectivities and the clinical variables using Pearson correlation analysis and multifactor linear regression analysis. Our results demonstrated that the mean global FiCD value was significantly decreased in ESRD patients. Notably, FiCD values were significantly changed(decreased or increased) in certain cortical regions, which mainly involved the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFC), inferior parietal cortex, lateral temporal cortex and middle occipital cortex. In ESRD patients, we found a trend of negative correlation between the increased FiCD values of bilateral middle frontal gyrus and serum creatinine, urea, parathyroid hormone(PTH) levels and dialysis duration. Only the white matter hyperintensity(WMH) scores were significantly negatively correlated with the global FiCD value in multifactor regression analysis. Our results suggested that ESRD patients exhibited extensive impaired cortical structural connectivity, which was related to the severity of WMHs. A compensation mechanism of cortical structural recombination may play a role in how the brain adapts to maintain optimal network function. Additionally, the serum creatinine, urea and PTH levels may be risk factors for brain structural network decompensation in ESRD patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the current 5 investigation strategies to defer cardiac testing in patients with stable chest pain. BACKGROUND: For the clinical management of stable chest pain, the identification of patients unlikely to benefit from further cardiac testing is important, but the most appropriate investigation strategy is unknown. METHODS: A total of 4,207 patients referred to coronary computed tomography angiography for stable chest pain were classified into low- and high-risk groups according to the 2016 National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline-determined strategy; PROMISE (Prospective Multicenter Imaging Study for Evaluation of Chest Pain) minimal risk tool-based strategy; 2019 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guideline-determined strategy; and coronary artery calcium score (CACS), either in isolation (the CACS strategy) or as part of a weighted clinical likelihood model-based strategy (the CACS-CL strategy). The associations of obstructive coronary artery disease on coronary computed tomography angiography, major adverse cardiovascular events, and subsequent clinical management with risk groups according to different strategies were evaluated and compared. RESULTS: The NICE, PROMISE, ESC, CACS, and CACS-CL strategies classified a proportion (22.63%, 29.21%, 41.84%, 46.76%, and 51.41%, respectively) of patients into low-risk groups. Compared with the NICE, PROMISE, ESC, and CACS strategies, the CACS-CL strategy had a stronger association between risk groups and obstructive coronary artery disease (odd ratios: 16.00 vs 2.93, 5.53, 7.94, and 10.39, respectively), major adverse cardiovascular events (HRs: 6.83 vs 1.90, 2.94, 4.23, and 5.13, respectively) and intensive subsequent clinical management as well as better metrics of diagnostic accuracy and positive net reclassification improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Among contemporary strategies used to identify patients with stable chest pain at low risk, the use of CACS, especially when combined with clinical risk features, showed the strongest potential to effectively defer cardiac testing.

RATIONALE: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is a rare autosomal recessive lipid deposition disorder characterized by systemic signs and neurological dysfunction. The radiological features of CTX are infrequently summarized in the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: We described a 40-year-old male patient who repeatedly engaged in wrestling matches and presented with progressive difficulty in walking and reduced balance with egg-sized, hard, smooth, and painless masses in both ankles. DIAGNOSIS: Neuroimaging examination showed abnormalities both supra- and infratentorially. Bilateral ankle joint magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral xanthomata of the Achilles tendon. The diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of a sterol 27-hydroxylase gene mutation. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with chenodeoxycholic acid (250 mg 3 times per day). OUTCOMES: To date, the patient's bilateral xanthomas of the Achilles tendon have begun to diminish, and his neurological impairment has not deteriorated further but has not yet improved. LESSONS: We report a rare case of CTX and summarize the clinical and imaging features of this disease. Our findings suggest that the abnormal signals in the dentate nucleus or a long spinal cord lesion involving the central and posterior cord, combined with tendon xanthoma, are important clues for the diagnosis of CTX.

Regional nitrate contamination in groundwater is a management challenge involving multisector benefits. There is always conflict between restricting anthropogenic activities to protect groundwater quality and prioritizing economic development, especially in productive agriculture dominated areas. To mitigate the nitrate contamination in groundwater, it is necessary to develop management alternatives that simultaneously support environmental protection and sustainable economic development. A regional transport modeling framework is applied to evaluate nitrate fate and transport in the Dagu Aquifer, a shallow sandy aquifer that supplies drinking water and irrigation water for a thriving agricultural economy in Shandong Province in east coastal China. The aquifer supports intensive high-value vegetable farms and nitrate contamination is extensive. Detailed land-use information and fertilizer use data were compiled and statistical approaches were employed to analyze nitrogen source loadings and the spatiotemporal distribution of nitrate in groundwater to support model construction and calibration. The evaluations reveal that the spatial distribution and temporal trends of nitrate contamination in the Dagu Aquifer are driven by intensive fertilization and vertical water exchange, the dominant flow pattern derived from intensive agricultural pumping and irrigation. The modeling framework is employed to assess the effectiveness of potentially applicable management alternatives. The predictive results provide quantitative comparisons for the trend and extent of groundwater quality mitigation under each scenario. Recommendations are made for measures that can both improve groundwater quality and sustain productive agricultural development.

Sialylated N-glycans are an integral component of whey proteins in human milk and play an irreplaceable role in infant growth and development. Currently, there are few studies on quantitative comparison of sialylated N-glycans in milk obtained at different lactation stages. Here, a preliminary isomer-specific quantification of whey sialylated N-glycans of human colostrum milk (CM) and mature milk (MM) was performed by using our recently developed glycoqueuing strategy. Such a preliminary comparison revealed that the whey sialylated N-glycan content was 86.4% lower in MM than in CM. Twenty-three α2,6-linked sialylated N-glycan isomers were detected with no α2,3-linked isomer observed. For the first time, three mono-sialylated and four bi-sialylated glycan isomers were reported. With the prolongation of lactation, the relative abundance of mono-sialylated glycans increased, whilst the relative abundance of bi-sialylated glycans decreased significantly. These findings contribute to the understanding of the structure-function relationship of sialylated N-glycans in the human whey fraction.
