RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: To determine if patient demographic data, medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests will help predict likelihood of imaging-based diagnosis using CT of the neck performed in the ED for a chief complaint of throat pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Single institutional, retrospective review of 367 CT scans of the neck performed for the evaluation of throat pain in the ED from August 2013 to September 2019. Patients' clinical history, physical exams, lab findings, and imaging results were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 367 CT scans of the neck performed for the evaluation of throat pain included a recorded exam and clinical history. Of these cases, we noted that the presence of cervical lymphadenopathy (OR = 2.69; 95% CI, 1.37-5.49), tonsillar findings (OR = 2.94; 95% CI, 1.4-6.57), increased white blood cell count (OR = 1.08; 95% CI, 1.02-1.15), and temperature (OR = 1.94; 95% CI, 1.1-3.6) were associated with increased likelihood of obtaining a diagnostic CT scan. CONCLUSION: Consideration of tonsillar abnormalities, lymphadenopathy, body temperature, and measured leukocyte count prior to ordering CT scans of the neck for throat pain may increase the diagnostic yield of such exams and decrease CT utilization in the ED.

Halogenated organic compounds as highly focused emerging contaminants pose a long-lasting threat to human health and the aquatic environment due to their high toxicities and strong anti-biodegradation characteristics. Electrochemical hydrodehalogenation (ECHD) is a promising technology with a low-carbon footprint to remove halogenated organic compounds while suffering from a lack of efficient and robust earth-abundant electrocatalysts. Herein, by integrating two kinds of transition metal dichalcogenides (i.e., MoSe2 nanosheet and Ni3Se2 nanowire) into a conductive 3D porous network nickel foam, we obtained a hierarchical architecture (MoSe2/Ni3Se2@NF) that promises high surface area, fast charge transfer and efficient mass transfer. The interface-confined epitaxial growth of Ni3Se2 nanowires on nickel foam provides abundant sites for the vertical growth of MoSe2 nanosheets, which endows MoSe2 with maximal accessible active edge sites to participate in the ECHD process. Benefiting from such a hierarchical 3D porous configuration, trichloroacetic acid (5 mg/L) was removed over 95% by MoSe2/Ni3Se2@NF at - 1.2 V vs. SCE after 1 h, which dramatically outperformed that for NF (20%) and Ni3Se2@NF (53.2%). The major contributor to such boosted performance is the adsorbed atomic hydrogen (*H) generated during water splitting via suppressing hydrogen-hydrogen dimerization, as evidenced by radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. This study offers appealing opportunities for tailoring the catalytic performance of noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts for various applications that require noble-metal catalysts.

Understanding the evolutionary forces in speciation is a central goal in evolutionary biology. Asian cultivated rice has two subspecies, indica and japonica, but the underlying mechanism of the partial reproductive isolation between them remains obscure. Here we show a presence-absence variation (PAV) at the Se locus functions as an indica-japonica reproductive barrier by causing hybrid sterility (HS) in indica-japonica crosses. The locus comprises two adjacent genes: ORF3 encodes a sporophytic pollen killer, whereas ORF4 protects pollen in a gametophytic manner. In F1 of indica-japonica crosses, pollen with the japonica haplotype, which lacks the sequence containing the protective ORF4, is aborted due to the pollen-killing effect of ORF3 from indica. Evolutionary analysis suggests ORF3 is a gene associated with the Asian cultivated rice species complex, and the PAV has contributed to the reproductive isolation between the two subspecies of Asian cultivated rice. Our analyses provide perspectives on rice inter-subspecies post-zygotic isolation, and will promote efforts to overcome reproductive barriers in indica-japonica hybrid rice breeding.

Computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous biopsy of deep-seated head and neck lesions can be a less invasive and equally effective alternative to surgical techniques. There are multiple approaches for needle biopsy that target varying spaces within the head and neck while successfully avoiding critical anatomy. In the paramaxillary approach, the needle is advanced through the infrazygomatic buccal space, in between the maxilla and mandible. In this study, we examine the safety and diagnostic yield of FNA without core needle biopsy performed via the paramaxillary approach in 19 patients yielding 20 fine needle aspirates between 2014 and 2022. Of the fine needle aspirates, 85.0% (17/20) were diagnostic. Concordant histopathologic diagnosis was obtained in 100% (17/17) diagnostic fine needle aspirates. There were no postprocedural complications.

In the present study, carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibrils (CMCNFs) with different carboxyl content (0.99-2.01 mmol/g) were prepared via controlling the ratio of monochloroacetic acid (MCA) and sodium hydroxide to Eucalyptus bleached pulp (EBP). CMCFs-PEI aerogels were obtained using the crosslinking reaction of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and CMCNFs with the aid of glutaraldehyde (GA). The effects of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial Cu2+ concentration on the Cu2+ removal performance of CMCNFs-PEI aerogels was highlighted. Experimental data showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of CMCNF30-PEI for Cu2+ was 380.03 ± 23 mg/g, and the adsorption results were consistent with Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.99). The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 616.48 mg/g. After being treated with 0.05 M EDTA solution, the aerogel retained an 85% removal performance after three adsorption-desorption cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrated that complexation was the main Cu2+ adsorption mechanism. The excellent Cu2+ adsorption capacity of CMCNFs-PEI aerogels provided another avenue for the utilization of cellulose nanofibrils in the wastewater treatment field.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) is an effective alternative treatment for obstructive sleep apnea that acts by opening the airway via selective stimulation of nerve fibers that innervate tongue muscles that protrude (genioglossus) and stiffen the tongue (transverse and vertical) while avoiding nerve fibers that innervate tongue muscles that retract the tongue (styloglossus and hyoglossus). There remains a subset of postoperative patients who fail to adequately respond to HGNS, in some cases due to mixed activation of muscles that simultaneously protrude and retract the tongue. This study aims to characterize the relationship between neurophysiological data from individual tongue muscle activation during intraoperative electromyographic recordings and postoperative apnea-hypopnea index responses to HGNS. METHODS: A single-institution review of 46 patients undergoing unilateral HGNS implantation for obstructive sleep apnea. Patients were separated into responders and nonresponders through comparison of pre and postoperative apnea-hypopnea index. Neurophysiological data included electromyographic responses of the genioglossus, styloglossus/hyoglossus, intrinsic/vertical, and hyoglossus (neck) muscles to intraoperative stimulation using unipolar (- to - and o to o) and bipolar (+ to +) settings. RESULTS: The overall treatment success rate was 61% as determined by a postoperative apnea-hypopnea index < 20 events/h with a greater than 50% AHI reduction. We observed no statistically significant relationships between treatment response and individual muscle responses. However, we did note that increasing body mass index was correlated with worse postoperative responses. CONCLUSIONS: Although we noted a significant subgroup of clinical nonresponders to HGNS postoperatively, these patients were not found to exhibit significant inclusion of tongue retractors intraoperatively on neurophysiological analysis. BACKGROUND: Oryza glumaepatula represents an important resource of genetic diversity that can be used to improve rice production. However, hybrid sterility severely restricts gene flow between Oryza species, and hinders the utilization of distant heterosis in hybrid rice breeding. RESULTS: In order to fully exploit the beneficial genes of O. glumaepatula and facilitate the conservation of these gene resources, a set of chromosome single-segment substitution lines (SSSLs) was developed using an indica variety HJX74 as the recurrent parent and an accession of O. glumaepatula as the donor parent. During the process of SSSLs development, S23, a locus conferring hybrid male sterility between O. sativa and O. glumaepatula, was identified and fine mapped to 11.54 kb and 7.08 kb genomic region in O. sativa and O. glumaepatula, respectively, encoding three and two candidate ORFs, respectively. qRT-PCR and sequence analysis excluded one common ORF as the candidate gene. In addition, hybrid male sterility caused by S23 was environment-sensitive, and could be observed only in natural short-day (NSD). CONCLUSION: Identification and candidate genes analysis of S23 in this study provides a valuable example to study the crosstalk between interspecific F1 hybrid male sterility and environment-conditioned male sterility in rice, facilitates reserving and utilizing favorable genes or alleles of wild Oryza species, and allows for a more efficient exploitation of distant heterosis in hybrid rice breeding.

There are over 150 currently known, highly diverse chemically modified RNAs, which are dynamic, reversible, and can modulate RNA-protein interactions. Yet, little is known about the wealth of such interactions. This can be attributed to the lack of tools that allow the rapid study of all the potential RNA modifications that might mediate RNA-protein interactions. As a promising step toward this direction, here we present a computational protocol for the characterization of interactions between proteins and RNA containing post-transcriptional modifications. Given an RNA-protein complex structure, potential RNA modified ribonucleoside positions, and molecular mechanics parameters for capturing energetics of RNA modifications, our protocol operates in two stages. In the first stage, a decision-making tool, comprising short simulations and interaction energy calculations, performs a fast and efficient search in a high-throughput fashion, through a list of different types of RNA modifications categorized into trees according to their structural and physicochemical properties, and selects a subset of RNA modifications prone to interact with the target protein. In the second stage, RNA modifications that are selected as recognized by the protein are examined in-detail using all-atom simulations and free energy calculations. We implement and experimentally validate this protocol in a test case involving the study of RNA modifications in complex with Escherichia coli (E. coli) protein Polynucleotide Phosphorylase (PNPase), depicting the favorable interaction between 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-oxoG) RNA modification and PNPase. Further advancement of the protocol can broaden our understanding of protein interactions with all known RNA modifications in several systems.
