RESUMEN

Cost limitations often lead to the adoption of lower precision grids for soil sampling in large-scale areas, potentially causing deviations in the observed trace metal (TM) concentrations from their true values. Therefore, in this study, an enhanced Health Risk Assessment (HRA) model was developed by combining Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and Empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK), aiming to improve the accuracy of health risk assessment under low-precision sampling conditions. The results showed that the increased sampling scale led to an overestimation of the non-carcinogenic risk for children, resulting in potential risks (the maximum Hazard index value was 1.08 and 1.64 at the 500 and 1000 m sampling scales, respectively). EBK model was suitable for predicting soil TM concentrations at large sampling scale, and the predicted concentrations were closer to the actual value. Furthermore, we found that the improved HRA model by combining EBK and MCS effectively reduced the possibility of over- or under-estimation of risk levels due to the increasing sampling size, and enhanced the accuracy and robustness of risk assessment. This study provides an important methodology support for health risk assessment of soil TMs under data limitation.

RESUMEN

Background: Evidence indicates that the addition of ezetimibe to statin therapy reduces cardiovascular events. However, the impact of ezetimibe-statin combination therapy on coronary plaque regression, plaque stabilization, and diameter stenosis remains a matter of controversy. Methods: We performed electronic searches in PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials to identify eligible trials assessing the effects of ezetimibe-statin combination therapy versus statin monotherapy reporting at least one outcome among total atheroma volume (TAV), minimum fibrous cap thickness (FCT), lumen volume (LV), and lumen area (LA) derived from intravascular imaging modalities of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). We used the random-effects model and performed trial sequential analysis (TSA) during this meta-analysis. Results: Eleven articles with a total of 926 individuals (460 in the dual-lipid-lowering therapy group and 466 in the statin monotherapy group) were included in the final meta-analysis. Compared to statin monotherapy, ezetimibe-statin combination therapy was associated with significantly decreased TAV [WMD = -3.17, 95% CI (-5.42 to -0.92), and p = 0.006], with no effect on the LV of the coronary artery [WMD = -0.52, 95% CI (-2.24 to 1.21), and p = 0.56], the LA of the coronary artery [WMD = 0.16, 95% CI (-0.10-0.42), and p = 0.22], or minimum FCT thickness [WMD = 19.11, 95%CI (-12.76-50.97)]. Conclusion: In patients with coronary artery disease, ezetimibe-statin combination therapy resulted in a significant regression in TAV compared to statin monotherapy, whereas no overall improvements of minimum FCT or lumenal stenosis were observed.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the clinical impact of ultrasound-guided acupuncture on persistent subjective vertigo as well as how it affects people's moods and life quality. Methods: The subjects of this study were 100 patients who were being treated at Li Huili Hospital from December, 2022 to December, 2023 for persistent subjective vertigo. With 50 instances in each category, individuals with chronic subjective dizziness were randomly assigned to the shallow acupuncture control category & the regular acupuncture category. Clinical effectiveness, Pittsburgh Sleep volume (PSQI), vestibular Disability Scale (DHI) score, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) score & Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), changes were evaluated among the two categories before and following therapy. The frequency of negative side effects following acupuncture therapy was contrasted among the two categories. Results: Following treatment, the conventional acupuncture category's overall effectiveness rate was 94%, which was higher than that of the shallow acupuncture category (80%) and was highly significant (χ2=4.332, P < .05). Post-treatment DHI, HAMA, HAMD, FSS, and PSQI scale scores in both categories were lower than those before therapy. Individuals receiving regular acupuncture showed significantly lower scores on the DHI, HAMA, HAMD, FSS, and PSQI scales when compared to those receiving shallow acupuncture control. Following therapy, the prevalence of adverse reactions in the conventional acupuncture category was 24 (48.00%) as well as 34 (68.00%) in the shallow acupuncture control category. respectively. This difference in incidence was statistically significant (P < .05), with the conventional acupuncture category experiencing fewer adverse reactions than the shallow acupuncture control category. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided acupuncture is effective in the treatment of chronic subjective dizziness, helping to relieve dizziness symptoms, and actively improving patients' mood, sleep, and quality of life, it merits clinical advancement.

RESUMEN

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems have emerged as a prominent renewable energy-based technology for wastewater treatment, offering sustainable advantages such as eliminating dependence on fossil fuels or grid electricity compared to traditional electrochemical treatment methods. However, previous PEC systems often overlook the potential of ions present in wastewater as an alternative to externally applied bias voltage for enhancing carrier separation efficiency. Here we report a bias-free driven ion assisted photoelectrochemical (IAPEC) system by integration of an electron-ion acceptor cathode, which leverages its fast ion-electron coupling capability to significantly enhance the separation of electrons and holes at the photoanode. We demonstrate that Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) can serve as robust and reversible electron-ion acceptors that provide reaction sites for photoelectron coupling cations, thus driving the hole oxidation to produce strong oxidant free radicals at photoanode. Our IAPEC system exhibits superior degradation performance in wastewater containing chloride medium. This indicates that, in addition to the cations (e.g., Na+) accelerating the electron transfer rate, the presence of Cl- ions further enhance efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment. This work highlights the potential of utilizing abundant sodium chloride in seawater as a cost-effective additive for wastewater treatment, offering crucial insights into the use of local materials for effective, low-carbon, and sustainable treatment processes.

RESUMEN

Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent arrhythmia, and myocardial fibrosis (MF) has a close association with atrial remodeling and leads to AF. This study aimed to explore the function of the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) differentiation antagonizing non-protein coding RNA (Dancr)/microRNA (miR)-146b-5p/Smad5 axis on MF in AF mice. Methods: AF mouse models were established. Overexpression Dancr lentivirus was injected into AF mice to increase Dancr expression in myocardial tissues. LncRNA Dancr, miR-146b-5p, and Smad5 expression levels and inflammatory factors (IL-18 and TNF-α) in the myocardial tissues were measured. MF was measured and the expression levels of MF-related genes (COL1A1, α-SMA, and FN1) were detected. In addition, in vitro HL-1 cell rapid pacing models were constructed, and after lncRNA Dancr and miR-146b-5p-related construct transfection, cell viability and cell apoptosis were determined. Results: LncRNA Dancr up-regulation ameliorated MF in the AF mice, reduced IL-18 and TNF-α expression levels in myocardial tissues, and decreased COL1A1, α-SMA, and FN1 expression levels. The in vitro HL-1 cell rapid pacing models suggested that miR-146b-5p overexpression reversed the inhibitory effects of lncRNA Dancr overexpression on MF in HL-1 cells, and Smad5 interference reversed the ameliorative effects of miR-146b-5p interference on MF in HL-1 cells. Conclusions: LncRNA Dancr can sponge miR-146b-5p to promote Smad5 expression, thereby delaying MF in AF mice.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Through meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of drug-coated balloons (DCB), compared with drug-eluting stents (DES) or uncoated devices, in the treatment of de novo coronary lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Only randomized controlled trials were included. The primary outcomes were late lumen loss (LLL), target lesion revascularization (TLR), and major adverse cardiac events (MACEs). Subgroup analyses were conducted based on clinical indications, whether DCBs were used with a systematic or bailout stent, and types of DESs. RESULTS: The present meta-analysis demonstrated that DCBs elicit significantly lower incidences of TLR, MACE, and LLL, compared with uncoated devices, and similar incidences, compared with DESs, in the treatment of de novo coronary lesions. Subgroup analysis indicated that DCBs used with a bailout stent achieved lower incidences of binary restenosis and myocardial infarction, compared with uncoated devices, and provided less LLL than DESs. DCBs showed similar rates of TLR and MACE, with significantly less LLL, than DESs in treating de novo small-vessel diseases. The clinical efficacy of DCBs was similar to that of second-generation DES. CONCLUSION: Overall, DCB is favored over bare metal stent alone in treating de novo coronary lesions. DCBs appear to be a promising alternative to DESs in the treatment of de novo coronary lesions.

RESUMEN

In order to further expand the application field of wood-plastic composites, it is necessary to study the reliability of this material in practical applications. Therefore, this work takes the maximum stress theory as the failure criterion and uses the finite element method to simulate the reliability of the WPC specimen. Based on the simulation results, the relationship between reliability and random variables such as geometric parameters and external load is analyzed. Finite element simulations are carried out for each group of specimens under the same operating environment to analyze the influence of process parameters such as the wood flour content, granulation temperature, coupling agent content and screw speed on the reliability of the specimens during the manufacturing process. The results show that the wood flour content has the greatest influence on the reliability of the specimens when the wood-plastic composites are used as building paving materials, followed by the granulation temperature, coupling agent content and screw speed, which provides a basis for the selection of the manufacturing process parameters of WPC based on reliability.

RESUMEN

Objective: This meta-analysis aims to assess the efficacy of acupuncture-related therapy on knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients. Method: We searched PubMed, Embase, and CNKI databases to screen eligible trials between 2017 and 2022. All trials that used acupuncture/moxibustion of KOA patients were included. Study selection and data extraction were performed by 2 researchers independently. The statistics was performed by using R 4.1.1. Results: A total of 17 trials were included in our meta-analysis. Meta-analysis results showed the evidence of the relation of several common acupunture/moxibustion treatments by network meta-analysis. In the fixed effect model, acupuncture/moxibustion has superior therapy efficacy than sham treatment (mean difference = -0.34, 95% confidence interval = (-0.52,-0.16), P=0.95). In fixed effect model, specific acupuncture/moxibustion has superior therapy efficacy than usual acupuncture/moxibustion (mean difference = -0.45, 95% confidence interval = (-0.62, -0.29), P < 0.01). Conclusion: Acupuncture/moxibustion has superior therapy efficacy than sham treatment. Specific acupuncture/moxibustion has superior therapy efficacy than usual acupuncture/moxibustion.

RESUMEN

A luminescent metal-organic framework of type Eu(III)-MOF has been fabricated for visual and on-site fluorometric determination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via a tablet computer. The maximum excitation and emission peaks of type Eu(III)-MOF were found at λex = 290 nm and λem = 615 nm, respectively. The average length of Eu-MOF is 1.21 ± 0.07 µm. In the presence of the target H2O2, Fe2+ is transmitted into Fe3+ via Fenton reaction, leading to a fluorescence quenching of Eu-MOF. Therefore, visible color change occurred from bright red into colorless. Interestingly, by means of tablet computer's digital camera and ImageJ software, fluorescent signals were captured and transduced into digital parameters, resulting in a linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and the concentration of H2O2. As a result, the determination of H2O2 without the aid of complicated instruments is achieved in the range 2.0 µM to 0.2 mM with a detection limit of 1.02 µM. Our approach has been successfully applied to quantify H2O2 in serum, urine, and waste water with good recovery and precision (< 2.5% RSD). Besides, our assay has been exploited for visual detection of H2O2 released from HepG2 cells with the advantages of portability and accuracy. Moreover, the strategy displays acceptable selectivity and stability. Hence, our assay provides an alternative practical method for on-site determination of H2O2 without the need for instruments. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of the synthesis procedure of a luminescent Eu-MOF, which has been successfully applied for on-site detection of H2O2 via Fenton reaction and imaging analysis technique. The method exhibits handheld and accuracy for H2O2 determination, holding the potential for biochemical and clinical applications in remote regions.

RESUMEN

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have received increasing attention worldwide recently because of potential risk to aquatic environment and living organisms. Herein, occurrence and spatial distributions of 17 selected PFCs were investigated in surface water adjacent to potential industrial emission categories in Shanghai. The results showed the distributions of PFCs in the ambient rivers were greatly affected by those industrial sources. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and other short-chain PFCs such as perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFBS) were detected as the predominant species in all samples. Specifically, the total concentrations of PFCs (∑PFCs) near the airport ranged from 142 to 264ngL-1, with PFOA, PFPeA, and PFBS as most prevalent. While near the fluorochemical plant and metal plating, concentrations of ∑PFCs ranged from 200 to 2143ngL-1 and 211ngL-1 to 705ngL-1; and PFOA was the predominant individual PFCs, with the highest concentration of 1985ngL-1. However, concentrations of PFOS were found at relatively low level, which ranged from < 0.06 to 4.44ngL-1. The Spearman correlation analysis of concentration of individual PFCs showed that PFOA and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) was positive, while the correlation between PFOA and perfluorohexansulfonate (PFHxS) was negative near the airport, indicating PFOA and PFHxA may share common sources. Preliminary ecological risk evaluation of PFCs in adjacent water of the industrial emission areas suggested these emission categories posed higher risks than other area, although the risk level was still relatively safe.

RESUMEN

A rapid and simple microwave-ultrasonic synergistic one-step extraction-derivatization (MUED) method and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was established for the determination of low content fatty acids (FAs) profile in Ranunculus ternatus Thunb. The critical experimental parameters for MUED method were optimized with response surface methodology by taking the chromatographic peak areas of total FAs as a major response index. The best technological parameters were determined as 5.0 g of Ranunculus ternatus Thunb. powder, 50.0 mL of n-hexane, 500 W of microwave power, 50 degree C of reaction temperature, 0.30 g of catalyst (KOH), 4.0 mL of derivatization reagent (methanol) and the time of extraction-derivatization of 8 min. The contents of individual FAs were quantified by internal standard method. The results showed that the chromatographic peak areas of the total FAs and the total unsaturated FAs contents obtained with MUED were (3.327 +/- 0.023) x 10(7) (n = 3) and (13.59 +/- 0.30) mg/g (n = 3) respectively. They were markedly higher than those obtained by the conventional method which were (2.410 +/- 0.036) x 10(7) (n = 3) and (12.05 +/- 0.34) mg/g (n = 3) respectively. The MUED method simplified the complicated sample handling steps, shortened the sample preparation time, reduced the cost of analysis, and improved the extraction and derivatization efficiency of the lipids, especially weakened the oxidization and decomposition of the unsaturated FAs. The simplicity, speed and practicability suggest the proposed method has significant potential for the determination of lowcontent FAs in herbal medicines.

RESUMEN

Redox effector factor (Ref-1) is a sensitive marker for oxidative cellular injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of acupuncture on hippocampal Ref-1 expression in cerebral multi-infarction rats. The rats with reference memory impairment were randomly allocated to three groups: impaired group, acupuncture group and placebo acupuncture group. Moreover, normal group and sham-operated group were set as control groups. Morris water maze test showed that cerebral multi-infarction rats did not present significant changes in spatial working memory performance. Further investigation by immunohistochemistry revealed that acupunctural treatment significantly increased the expression of Ref-1 in the hippocampus of the impaired rats. These findings suggested that the spatial working memory was unaffected in the cerebral multi-infarction rats although spatial reference memory deficits were detected in our previous study; in addition, acupuncture could increase the Ref-1 expression, consequently exerting the anti-oxidant effects.

RESUMEN

We wished to elucidate a potential role of the tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK)/fibroblast growth factor-inducible molecule 14 (Fn14) axis in myocardial fibrosis. Stimulation of neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) with TWEAK could increase CFs numbers and collagen synthesis. Conversely, when CFs were pretreated with siRNA against Fn14, induction of cell proliferation and collagen synthesis by TWEAK were inhibited. Pretreatment with TWEAK on CFs induced activation of the nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-кB) pathway and subsequently increased the production of metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Cell treatment with siRNA against Fn14 led to inhibition of the NF-кB pathway. Additionally, after stimulation of cell with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, cell proliferation and collagen synthesis induced by NF-кB and the upregulation of MMP-9 production were inhibited. The present study suggested that the TWEAK/Fn14 axis increased cell proliferation and collagen synthesis by activating the NF-кB pathway and increasing MMP-9 activity. This axis may be important for regulating myocardial fibrosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the physiologic mechanism of immediate analgesic effect of acupuncture in primary dysmenorrhea patients. METHODS: Forty primary dysmenorrhea patients were randomized into the Sanyinjiao (SP6) acupuncture group, Xuanzhong (GB39) control group, nonacupoint control group, or no acupuncture group. Patients in the 3 acupuncture groups were treated with electroacupuncture at assigned points lasting 30 minutes, whereas patients in no acupuncture group did not receive any acupuncture intervention. Before and after acupuncture, visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were recorded and blood samples were taken for the measurement of the plasma levels of 4 principal prostaglandins (PGE(2), PGF(2a), TXB(2), and 6-keto PGF(1a)). RESULTS: The VAS scores for pain intensity significant decreased in patients who received acupuncture compared with those had no acupuncture intervention. However, there were no significant differences among patients in the 3 acupuncture groups after acupuncture. In addition, no statistically significant differences were observed in the plasma PGE(2), PGF(2a), TXB(2), or 6-keto PGF(1a) levels and the ratios of PGF(2a)/PGE(2), and TXB(2)/6-keto PGF(1a) after acupuncture at SP6. CONCLUSIONS: The immediate analgesic effect of SP6 might not be mediated by changes in the prostaglandin levels.
