Pesticides and microplastics are common pollutants in soil environments, adversely affecting soil organisms. However, the combined toxicological effects of aged microplastics and pesticides on soil organisms are still unclear. In this study, we systematically studied the toxicological effects of azoxystrobin and four different aged polyethylene (PE) microplastics on earthworms (Eisenia fetida). The purpose was to evaluate the effects of aging microplastics on the toxicity of microplastics-pesticides combinations on earthworms. The results showed that different-aged PE microplastics promoted azoxystrobin accumulation in earthworms. Meanwhile, combined exposure to azoxystrobin and aged PE microplastics decreased the body weight of earthworms. Besides, both single and combined exposure to azoxystrobin and aged PE microplastics could lead to oxidative damage in earthworms. Further studies revealed that azoxystrobin and aged PE microplastics damage the intestinal structure and function of earthworms. Additionally, the combination of different aged PE microplastics and azoxystrobin was more toxic on earthworms than single exposures. The PE microplastics subjected to mechanical wear, ultraviolet radiation, and acid aging exhibited the strongest toxicity enhancement effects on earthworms. This high toxicity may be related to the modification of PE microplastics caused by aging. In summary, these results demonstrated the enhancing effects of aged PE microplastics on the toxicity of pesticides to earthworms. More importantly, aged PE microplastics exhibited stronger toxicity-enhancing effects in the early exposure stages. This study provides important data supporting the impact of different aged PE microplastics on the environmental risks of pesticides.

This study aimed to assess the hypoglycemic efficacy of low molecular weight polysaccharides fractions obtained from Laminaria japonica (LJOO) in a model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) constructed using mice. Biochemical parameters were measured after 4 weeks of continuous gavage, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations were analyzed. Pathological changes in tissues were assessed. The intestinal contents were obtained for 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing analysis and detection of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). LJOO lowered FBG and insulin concentrations. It altered the gut microbiota composition, as evidenced by enriched probiotic bacteria, along with an increase in the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio and a decrease in the population of harmful bacteria. LJOO stimulated the growth of SCFA-producing bacteria, thereby increasing cecal SCFAs levels. LJOO can potentially aid in alleviating T2DM and related gut microbiota dysbiosis. LJOO may be used as a food supplement for patients with T2DM.

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of many major public health problems in China, and its prevalence and associated risk factors in the southeast of China need to be determined to facilitate disease control and prevention. Methods: A multistage stratified cluster sampling method was used to select 5486 participants aged ≥ 40 years from nine COPD monitoring districts in Fujian Province during 2019-2020. Participants were interviewed using a laptop-based questionnaire and underwent pulmonary function tests. COPD was diagnosed according to the 2019 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criteria. Results: Final analysis was conducted using data from 4999 participants with qualified post-bronchodilator results. The prevalence of COPD was 11.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.5-12.7). Risk factors for COPD in the logistic regression model were being male (odds ratio [OR] = 2.83, 95% CI: 2.01-3.98), > 70 years old (OR = 16.16, 95% CI: 8.14-32.08), having a low body mass index (BMI) (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.13-2.89), parental history of respiratory disease (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.50-2.10), being a current (OR = 2.82, 95% CI: 1.83-4.36) or former (OR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.45-4.19) smoker, and indoor exposure to biomass (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.05-1.58). Conclusion: The estimated prevalence of COPD in southeast China is high. COPD was strongly associated with sex, aging, a low BMI, parental history of respiratory diseases, smoking, and indoor exposure to biomass in adults aged ≥ 40 years. The government should urgently implement comprehensive measures to reduce the risk factors for COPD.
