RESUMEN

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening disease that remains undetected until it acutely ruptures. Due to lack of effective pharmaceutic therapies, it is urgent to explore new prevention and treatment strategies. Metabolic reprogramming is a cellular process through which cells change their metabolic patterns to meet material and energy requirements, including glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism. Recently, the regulatory role of metabolic reprogramming in cardiovascular diseases, especially AAA, has attracted significant attention. This review article focuses on the research progress regarding the effects of metabolic reprogramming of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and macrophages on the occurrence and development of AAA, especially their roles in major pathological processes such as VSMCs apoptosis and phenotype transformation, extracellular matrix remodeling, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response. The aim is to provide new clues for the mechanism research and clinical treatment of AAA from the perspective of metabolism.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of lateral thoracic adipofascial flaps in reconstructing the defects following breast-conserving surgery (BCS) in breasts with either no ptosis or mild ptosis. METHODS: 37 female patients who underwent BCS and lateral thoracic adipofascial flap breast reconstruction between June 2020 and July 2022 were analysed. Surgery-related complications, intraoperative positive margin, local recurrence, and cosmetic outcome were assessed. RESULTS: Three local complications occurred in patients, all of which were cured by conservative treatment. Additionally, four patients had intraoperative positive margins. After a median follow-up period of 17.5 months, none of the patients showed local recurrence. All patients achieved a satisfactory breast shape. Further, patients without ptosis achieved good volume and symmetry. However, the breast symmetry was not satisfactory for patients with ptosis. CONCLUSION: It is reliable and effective to use the lateral thoracic adipofascial flaps to reconstruct the defects after BCS when the breast is not ptotic and the lesions are located in the lateral and central quadrants.

RESUMEN

Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (JCT) is an endocrine tumor marked by elevated renin levels and high blood pressure. This case report presents the clinical findings of a 47-year-old woman with a history of recurrent hypokalemia, headaches, hypertension, and increased plasma renin activity (PRA). Dynamic enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a small nodule on the upper part of the right kidney. Selective renal venous sampling indicated a higher PRA only in the right upper pole renal vein. The patient underwent surgical removal of the right kidney mass, and the pathology results confirmed the diagnosis of JCT. This case underscores the importance of conducting selective renal venous sampling for accurate JCT diagnosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the proliferation inhibition and pro-apoptotic effect of Huaier aqueous extract combined with routine chemotherapeutic drugs including Vincristine (VCR), Daunorubicin (DNR), L-aspartase (L-Asp) on human acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell lines Nalm-6 and Sup-B15. METHODS: Nalm-6 and Sup-B15 cell lines were treated with different concentrations of Huaier aqueous extract and chemotherapeutics including VCR, DNR, L-Asp alone or in combination for 48 h, and the growth inhibitory effect and IC50 values (the half maximal inhibitory concentration) were detected by CCK-8. Jin's formula was used to estimated the synergistic effect of these combinations. Apoptosis rates of Nalm-6 and Sup-B15 cells and expression of apoptosis-related proteins BAX, BCL-2, cleaved Caspase-3 were determined by flow cytometry and Western blot respectivcly. RESULTS: Huaier aqueous extract, VCR, DNR and L-Asp had inhibition effect on Nalm-6 and Sup-B15 cell lines. The inhibition rate of Huaier aqueous extract combined with VCR, DNR and L-Asp were all higher than those of each dug alone (P<0.05) and the combination index (q) was between 0.85 and 1.15 or greater than 1.15. The two kinds of drugs showed had additive or synergistic effects. The results of flow cytometry showed that the cell apoptosis rates in combined treatment group were higher than those of each drug alone (P<0.05). The results of Western blot revealed that Huaier aqueous extract and VCR all decreased protein expression of BCL-2 (P<0.05) and increase protein expression of BAX (P<0.05) and cleaved Caspase-3 (P<0.05) in Nalm-6 and Sup-B15 cells. Compared with Huaier aqueous extract or VCR alone, the effect of two drug combination were more significant. DNR down-regulated protein expression of BCL-2 (P<0.05) and up-regulated cleaved Caspase-3 (P<0.05). However, it had no effect on the expression of BAX in Nalm-6 and Sup-B15 cells. When it was combined with Huaier aqueous extract, the expression of cleaved Caspase-3 and BCL-2 showed more significant changes. The expression of BAX in combined treated group did not show significant difference, compared with group treated with Huaier aqueous extract in Nalm-6 and Sup-B15 cells. L-Asp did not show significant effect on the three apoptosis-related proteins and there was no significant difference between the combination group and the Huaier aqueous extract group. CONCLUSION: the combination of Huaier aqueous extract and VCR, DNR, L-Asp shows additive or synergistic effects on human acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell lines Nalm-6 and Sup-B15.

RESUMEN

Nischarin is an integrin-binding protein, which is well known as a novel tumor suppressor. In breast cancer, Nischarin serves a critical role in breast cancer cell migration and invasion. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the role of Nischarin remains unclear. Recent findings have demonstrated that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) increases the capacity of cell migration and invasion. As a member of the integrin family, it was hypothesized that Nischarin may regulate cellular processes via various signaling pathways associated with the EMT process. The present study detected the mRNA levels of EMT regulators via reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and related protein levels via western blotting in breast cancer cells, following NISCH-overexpression and -knockdown. The results demonstrated that Nischarin inhibits cell proliferation, migration and invasion in breast cancer cells. Furthermore, when the NISCH gene was overexpressed, the relative mRNA level of E-cadherin was increased, while the relative mRNA levels of several transcription factors, such as Snail, ZEB1, N-cadherin, Slug, Twist1 and vimentin, decreased. When NISCH was silenced, these results were reversed. The present results demonstrated that Nischarin suppresses cell migration and invasion via inhibiting the EMT process.

RESUMEN

Sarcopenia is an age-related syndrome characterized by progressive loss of muscle mass and function. Exercise is an important strategy to prolong life and increase muscle mass, and resveratrol has been shown a variety beneficial effects on skeletal muscle. In the present study, we investigated the potential efficacy of using short-term exercise (six weeks), resveratrol (150mg/kg/day), or combined exercise+resveratrol (150mg/kg/day) on gastrocnemius muscle mass, grip strength, cross-sectional area and microscopic morphology in aged rats, and explored the potential mechanism at the apoptosis level. Six months old SD rats were used as young control group and 24months old SD rats were adopted as aged group. After six weeks intervention, the data provide evidence that exercise, resveratrol or their combination significantly increase the relative grip strength and muscle mass in aged rats (P<0.05). Electron microscopy discovered a significant increase in sarcomere length, I-band and H-zone in aged rats (P<0.05), and exercise, resveratrol or their combination significantly reduced the increasement (P<0.05). Moreover, light microscopy revealed a significant increase on Feret's diameter and cross-sectional area (CSA) in aged rats (P<0.05), but exercise and resveratrol did not show significant effects on them (P>0.05). Furthermore, exercise, resveratrol or their combination significantly increased the expression of p-AMPK and SIRT1, decreased the expression of acetyl P53 and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in aged rats (P<0.05). These findings show that aged rats show significant changes in gastrocnemius muscle morphology and ultrastructure, and the protective effects of exercise, resveratrol and their combination are probably associated with anti-apoptotic signaling pathways through activation of AMPK/Sirt1.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of lactoferrin (LF) in primary fetal rat osteoblasts proliferation and differentiation and investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms. Primary rat osteoblasts were obtained from the calvarias of neonatal rats. Osteoblasts were treated with LF (0.1-1000 µg/mL), or OSI-906 [a selective inhibitor of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) receptor and insulin receptor]. The IGF-1 was then knocked down by small hairpin RNA (shRNA) technology and then was treated with recombinant human IGF-1 or LF. Cell proliferation and differentiation were measured by MTT assay and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay, respectively. The expression of IGF-1 and IGF binding protein 2 (IGFBP2) mRNA were analyzed using real-time PCR. LF promotes the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts in a certain range (1-100 µg/mL) in time- and dose-dependent manner. The mRNA level of IGF-1 was significantly increased, while the expression of IGFBP2 was suppressed by LF treatment. Knockdown of IGF-1 by shRNA in primary rat osteoblast dramatically decreased the abilities of proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts and blocked the proliferation and differentiation effect of LF in osteoblasts. OSI906 (5 µM) blocked the mitogenic and differentiation of LF in osteoblasts. Proliferation and differentiation of primary rat osteoblasts in response to LF are mediated in part by stimulating of IGF-1 gene expression and alterations in the gene expression of IGFBP2.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The presence of reciprocal and Robertsonian chromosomal rearrangement is often related to recurrent miscarriage. Using preimplantation genetic diagnosis, the abortion rate can be decreased. Cases treated at our center were reviewed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis for either Robertsonian or reciprocal translocations was performed on all completed cycles of preimplantation genetic diagnosis at our center since the first reported case in 2004 until the end of 2010. Day 3 embryo biopsies were carried out, and the biopsied cell was checked by fluorescent in situ hybridization using relevant informative probes. Embryos with a normal or balanced translocation karyotype were transferred on Day 4. RESULTS: Thirty-eight preimplantation genetic diagnosis cycles involving 17 couples were completed. A total of 450 (82.6%) of the total oocytes were MII oocytes, and 158 (60.0%) of the two-pronuclei embryos were biopsied. In 41.4% of the fluorescent in situ hybridization analyses, the results were either normal or balanced. Embryos were transferred back after 21 cycles. Three babies were born from Robertsonian translocation carriers and another two from reciprocal translocation carriers. The miscarriage rate was 0%. Among the reciprocal translocation group, the live delivery rate was 8.3% per ovum pick-up cycle and 18.2% per embryo transfer cycle. Among the Robertsonian translocation group, the live delivery rate was 14.3% per ovum pick-up cycle and 20.0% per embryo transfer cycle. CONCLUSION: There is a trend whereby the outcome for Robertsonian translocation group carriers is better than that for reciprocal translocation group carriers. Aneuploidy screening may possibly be added in order to improve the outcome, especially for individuals with an advanced maternal age. The emergence of an array-based technology should help improve this type of analysis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the combined effects between the two polymorphisms murine double minute 2 (MDM2) rs2279744 T→G and P53 rs1042522 G→C on the genetic susceptibility of breast cancer. METHODS: A total of 600 female patients with diagnosed breast cancer were consecutively recruited from the Yuhang district, Hangzhou city during March 2001 to May 2009. In the same period as the cases were collected, 600 healthy women living in Yuhang district, Hangzhou city were selected from a nutritional survey conducted. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were obtained from the study subjects and the demographic information were collected through questionnaires. PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used for genotyping MDM2 rs2279744 T→G and P53 rs1042522 G→C. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the combined effects of the two polymorphisms on breast cancer risk. RESULTS: The frequency of MDM2 rs2279744 GG, TG and TT genotypes were 31.5% (189/600), 45.5% (273/600), 23.0% (138/600) in case group and 19.0% (114/600), 49.2% (295/600), 31.8% (191/600) in control group. The frequency of P53 rs1042522 GG, GC and CC genotypes were 23.1% (139/600), 50.2% (301/600), 26.7% (160/600) in case group and 30.5% (183/600), 51.3% (308/600), 18.2% (109/600) in control group. Logistic regression analysis showed that carriers with rs2279744 TG, GG genotypes had a significant increased risk for developing breast cancer compared with rs2279744 TT carriers (OR = 1.31, 95%CI: 0.97 - 1.73 for TG; OR = 2.24, 95%CI: 1.61 - 3.09 for GG). When comparing with rs1042522 GG carriers, carriers with rs1042522 GC, CC genotypes had a significant increased risk for developing breast cancer (OR = 1.34, 95%CI: 0.94 - 1.68 for GC; OR = 1.89, 95%CI: 1.35 - 2.68 for CC). The united analysis of this two polymorphisms showed that compared with individuals carrying rs2279744 TT and rs1042522 GG (the frequency were 4.8% (29/600) in case group and 11.5% (69/600) in control group), carries with rs2279744 TG/GG and rs1042522 GC/GG genotypes (the frequency were 95.2% (571/600) in case group and 88.5% (531/600) in control group) showed significant higher risk in the susceptibility to breast cancer (OR = 2.30, 95%CI: 1.39 - 3.82 for TG/GC + GG; OR = 2.14, 95%CI: 1.29 - 3.55 for TT + GC/CC; OR = 2.86, 95%CI: 1.80 - 4.53 for TG/GG + GC/CC). The combination of MDM2 rs2279744 T→G and P53 rs1042522 G→C contributed to a significantly higher risk of breast cancer than did any one of the variant (P = 0.046). The risk of susceptibility to breast cancer was much higher when this two polymorphisms both variant. CONCLUSIONS: The MDM2 rs2279744 T→G and P53 rs1042522 G→C may be risk factor for breast cancer. Significant combined effects between the two polymorphisms may contribute to the genetic susceptibility to breast cancer.

RESUMEN

Erectile dysfunction (ED), as a pathological phenomenon, refers to repeated or sustained difficulty to achieve and maintain sufficient penile erection to complete satisfactory sexual intercourse or sexual activity in male. The erectile reflex interruption induced by cavernous nerve (CN) damage is a direct cause of ED. In addition, the apoptosis of smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells in the corpus cavernosum caused by CN injury, along with the reduction of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle fibers, can increase the incidence of ED. Therefore, early intervention of the pathological process of CN injury and promotion of CN regeneration are essential for the treatment of ED. In recent years, the stem cell therapy for ED has become a focus in clinical research. This article offers an overview on the application of embryonic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, muscle-derived stem cells, and adipose stem cells in the treatment of ED.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects approximately 10-15% of reproductive-age couples. Poor semen quality contributes to about 25% of infertile cases. Resulting from the direct effect on testicular function or hormonal alterations, heavy metals exposure has been related to impaired semen quality. The objective of this study was to assess the level of lead in the seminal plasma in men without occupational exposure to lead, and to determine the relationship between semen quality and lead concentration in the semen. METHODS: This is a prospective and nonrandomized clinical study conducted in University infertility clinic and academic research laboratory. Three hundred and forty-one male partners of infertile couples undergoing infertility evaluation and management were recruited to the study. Semen samples collected for the analyses of semen quality were also used for the measurement of lead concentrations. Semen samples were evaluated according to the WHO standards. RESULTS: All subjects were married and from infertile couples without occupational exposure to lead. There is a significant inverse correlation between the lead concentration in seminal plasma and sperm count. A higher semen lead concentration was correlated with lower sperm count, but not with semen volume, sperm motility or sperm morphology as assessed by simple linear regression. CONCLUSIONS: We found that semen lead concentration was significantly higher among the patients with lower sperm count. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that a high level of lead accumulation in semen may reduce the sperm count contributing to infertility of men without occupational exposure to lead.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To test whether a site-specific hysteroscopic biopsy-induced injury in the endometrium during the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation cycle improves subsequent embryo implantation in patients with repeated implantation failure, a total of 30 patients who have had good responses to controlled ovulation stimulation but have failed to achieve pregnancy after two or more transfers of good-quality embryos were recruited in this prospective study. METHODS: A single, site-specific hysteroscopic biopsy-induced injury was generated on the posterior endometrium at midline 10-15 mm from the fundus during the D4-D7 period of the ongoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation cycle in six patients. RESULTS: Patients received endometrial biopsy protocol achieved a pregnancy rate of 100%. By contrast, only 46% of patients with similar clinical characteristics (N = 24) achieved pregnancy without the hysteroscopic biopsy-induced endometrium injury (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our proof-of-concept study demonstrates that a site-specific hysteroscopic endometrium injury performed during the ongoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, instead of injuries received during prior cycles, significantly improves clinical outcomes in patients with repeated implantation failure.

RESUMEN

CONTEXT: Acromegaly is associated with a significant increase in mortality. With the development of new modalities of treatment, it has become important to identify prognostic factors relating to mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the all-cause mortality of patients with acromegaly after trans-sphenoidal surgery, and assess the impact of biochemical markers on survival. DESIGN: Two hundred thirty-four patients were admitted to the Taipei Veterans General Hospital for acromegaly between 1979 and 2007. Of the 163 patients who underwent trans-sphenoidal surgery, 142 had data available for insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and their survival status was analyzed. Serial data for fasting growth hormone (GH) and IGF-1 were collected. This study also used the last follow-up data for mortality analysis. The patients with acromegaly were grouped according to the last follow-up GH level (≤2 or >2 µg/L) and IGF-1 SD score (≤2 or >2). All-cause mortality was followed to the end of 2007 and compared to the general Taiwanese population by standardized mortality ratios. RESULTS: Serial GH and IGF-1 data revealed that the GH levels in the first 3 years after surgery were important predictors of mortality in acromegaly. However, there are insufficient IGF-1 data for deceased patients to determine the significance of a raised IGF-1 immediately following treatment. Comparison of crude death rates suggests that a fasting GH level of 2 µg/L and normalization of the IGF-1 level are appropriate targets. After subgroup analysis to assess the impact of discordant GH and IGF-1 levels on survival, the data showed that the elevated GH group had a trend toward a higher mortality than the elevated IGF-1 group. CONCLUSIONS: An elevated GH value in the first 3 years after surgery may be the best predictor of mortality. Thus, the follow-up of patients with acromegaly at relatively frequent intervals after trans-sphenoidal surgery should be routine.

RESUMEN

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Er(2)(C(10)H(8)O(6))(3)(H(2)O)(4)]·6H(2)O, comprises one Er(3+) ion, one and a half 2,2'-(p-phenyl-enedi-oxy)diacetate (hqda) ligands, two coordinated water mol-ecules and three uncoordinated water mol-ecules. The Er(3+) ion is nine-coordinated by seven O atoms from hqda ligands and two O atoms from water mol-ecules. In the title compound, there are two types of crystallographically independent ligands: one with an inversion center in the middle of the ligand is chelating on both ends of the ligand towards each one Er center; the other hqda ligands are bridging-chelating on one side, and bridging on the other end of the ligand. Two adjacent Er(3+) ions are thus chelated and bridged by -COO groups from hqda ligands in three coordination modes (briding-chelating, bridging and chelating). These building blocks are linked by OOC-CH(2)O-C(6)H(4)-OCH(2)-COO spacers, forming two-dimensional neutral layers. Adjacent layers are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional supermolecular network.

RESUMEN

The title compound, [Sm(2)(C(14)H(8)O(4))(3)(H(2)O)(2)](n), is composed of one-dimensional chains and is isostructural with previously reported compounds [Wang et al. (2003 ▶). Eur. J. Inorg. Chem. pp. 1355-1360]. The asymmetric unit contains two Sm atoms, each of which lies on a crystallographic twofold axis. Both crystallographically independent Sm atoms are coordinated by eight O atoms in a distorted dodeca-hedral arrangement. The polymeric chains run along [001]. Adjacent chains are connected through π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.450 (2) Å], forming a two-dimensional supra-molecular network.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the relationship between pregnancy rate and semen cadmium concentration. This prospective and nonrandomized clinical study analyzed 341 male partners of infertile couples undergoing infertility evaluation and management. Semen samples were collected to analyze semen quality and cadmium concentrations. The main outcome was pregnancy during 60-day infertility treatment. Simple linear regression analysis revealed an association between semen cadmium concentration NS sperm count (r=-0.150, P=0.0416) in nonsmoking subjects (n=184). In both smokers and nonsmokers, semen cadmium concentrations were significantly higher in non-pregnant patients than in pregnant patients. In nonsmokers, Cox multi-variable fertility ratio analysis demonstrated an association between semen cadmium concentration and fertility (fertility ratio of log semen cadmium=0.24; 95% confidence intervals (CI)=0.12-0.47, P<0.0001) after adjusting for related variables. Each tenfold increase in semen cadmium concentration was associated with a 4.17-fold increase in infertility ratio in nonsmoking patients. In smokers, Cox multi-variable fertility ratio analysis demonstrated that sperm count and semen cadmium concentration are associated with fertility (fertility ratio of log semen cadmium=0.17; 95% CI=0.04-0.63, P=0.0085) after adjusting for related variables. In smokers, each tenfold increase in semen cadmium concentration was associated with a 5.88-fold increase in infertility ratio. In conclusion, low levels of cadmium accumulation in semen may contribute to male infertility by reducing sperm quality.

BACKGROUND: This study compares the cardiovascular autonomic function in type 2 diabetes with and without microalbuminuria, in order to identify the possible links between early nephropathy and diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN). METHODS: Cardiovascular reflex tests were performed to determine the cardiovascular autonomic function. Thirty cases of type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria were studied for evidence of DAN to compare with a normoalbuminuric group of 56 diabetic patients. RESULTS: There was an increased prevalence of autonomic dysfunction in patients with microalbuminuria (63.3% in the microalbuminuria group vs. 40.0% in the normoalbuminuric controls, p = 0.001). These patients had lower heart rate variability during single breathing tests (6.9 +/- 4.3 vs. 9.6 +/- 3.6 beats/minute, p = 0.005), during 6 consecutive breathings (5.8 +/- 3.6 vs. 8.2 +/- 3.3 beats/minute, p = 0.005), after standing up (12.2 +/- 4.6 vs. 15.0 +/- 5.2 beats/ minute, p = 0.012), and during the Valsalva maneuver (11.3 +/- 3.5 vs. 13.2 +/- 3.6 beats/minute, p = 0.022). The heart rate variability with these stresses was revealed to be less favorable in subjects with microalbuminuria. However, blood pressure (BP) changes from the sitting to standing position were not significantly different for systolic BP (11.5 +/- 10.7 vs. 10.7 +/- 7.8 mmHg, p = 0.741) and diastolic BP (5.2 +/- 4.4 vs. 5.9 +/- 4.0 mmHg, p = 0.451) between the 2 groups. CONCLUSION: Type 2 diabetic patients with microalbuminuria have diminished heart rate variability in response to deep breathing, change of position and the Valsalva maneuver, but they preserve BP response to postural change. Therefore, microalbuminuria seems to be associated with early DAN, but not with advanced DAN.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is defined as making a diagnosis or screening embryos or gametes before implantation. It has the advantage of avoiding repeated spontaneous abortions or therapeutic termination of pregnancy resulting from abnormal embryos. Here, we present our preliminary report of 2 years of experience. METHODS: From March 2001 through October 2002, couples seeking assistance for in vitro fertilization (IVF) were referred for PGD due to chromosomal problems or for aneuploidy screening (PGD-AS). One or two blastomeres were aspirated on day 3 and analyzed using the fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technique. Probes to chromosomes X, Y, and 18 were used for aneuploidy screening and individual specific probes were chosen for chromosomal translocations. Unaffected embryos were transferred on day 5. RESULTS: There were 25 cycles for aneuploid screening (group 1) and four cycles for chromosomal translocation (group 2). In group 1, 73 embryos were biopsied with a successful biopsy/fixation rate of 72.6% and a diagnosis rate of 96.2%. Fifteen unaffected embryos were transferred in 11 cycles, achieving two sets of twins and four singleton pregnancies (implantation rate: 53.3%). In group 2, 27 embryos were biopsied with a successful biopsy/fixation rate of 66.7% and a diagnosis rate of 88.9%. Seven non-affected embryos were transferred in three cycles, resulting in one set of twins (implantation rate: 33.3%). All antenatal amniocentesis confirmed the diagnosis. Post-natal physical examination showed no evidence of major abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: PGD is an alternative method for having healthy children in selected couples with chromosomal abnormalities. In addition, PGD-AS may increase the implantation rate in infertile couples seeking IVF assistance.
