RESUMEN

It is of great significance to carry out scientific investigation of threatened species and assess their in-situ conservation status in order to guide the conservation and management of these species within a region. In this study, we explored and assessed the biodiversity and in-situ conservation status of the threatened medicinal vascular plants(TMVPs) in central China. The results showed that there were 276 TMVPs in central China, including 18 critically endangered(CR), 77 endangered(EN), and 181 vulnerable(VU) species. Of which, 222 TMVPs were distributed in 49 national nature reserves, with an in-situ conservation rate of 80.43%. And the in-situ conservation rate of CR, EN and NR species were 83.33%, 77.92% and 81.22%, respectively. The complementary algorithm was used to select the nine national nature reserves with the highest protection and complementary contribution to the TMVPs. The cumulative protection contribution rate of these nine nature reserves was 81.98%. Fifty-four TMVPs were distributed outside of national nature reserves, while mainly distributed within 10 hotspot counties including Badong county, Hubei province, Sangzhi county, Hunan province, Jianghua Yao Autonomous county, Hunan province and so on. In general, TMVPs are well protected by the national nature reserves in central China. However, there are still some conservation gaps. It is necessary to carry out further field investigation on the species with conservation gaps and identify the gap areas, so as to provide scientific guidance for the optimization of the conservation of TMVPs in this region.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and adverse effects of radioiodine (131I) therapy between two groups of patients with low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) who received 30 mCi or 100 mCi radioiodine for ablation of the thyroid remnant after total thyroidectomy. METHODS: The study cohort was 173 patients, 85 of whom were given 30 mCi of radioiodine and the others were given 100 mCi of radioiodine. Follow-up involved neck ultrasonography, measurement of serum levels of thyroglobulin and whole-body scans to evaluate the response of radioiodine treatment. All patients were assessed for adverse effects. RESULTS: Of the 173 patients, 170 (98.3%) patients finally achieved successful ablation. The prevalence of successful ablation was 77.6% in the low-dose group versus 71.5% in the high-dose group after the first dose administration (P=0.36), 79% in the low-dose group versus 88% in the high-dose group after the second dose administration (P=0.416), and 97.6% in the low-dose group versus 98.9% in the high-dose group after the final ablation (P=0.54). We found no significant differences between the two groups. No patient had an adverse effect with a severity grade ⩾2 and the prevalence of adverse effects in the high-dose group was higher than that in the low-dose group, especially for nausea, neck pain, and sore throat. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that a low dose of radioiodine is as effective as a high dose of radioiodine for ablation of the thyroid remnant after total thyroidectomy for low-risk DTC. Moreover, low-dose radioiodine therapy is associated with a lower prevalence of adverse events.

RESUMEN

COX-2 and 5-LOX are up-regulated in ESCC. This study aims to determine the efficacy of COX-2 inhibitor, 5-LOX inhibitor and their combination on ESCC. Nimesulide can suppress cell growth and promote apoptosis, accompanied with a decrease of PGE(2) production. AA861 has the similar effect with a down-regulation of LTB(4). In animal experiment, the tumor volumes in drug-treated groups were significantly smaller with the lowest rates of Ki-67 positive cells. In conclusion, either COX-2 inhibitor or 5-LOX inhibitor can suppress ESCC. Dual inhibition of COX-2 and 5-LOX pathway may present a superior anticancer efficacy to either inhibition of COX-2 or 5-LOX alone.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1) gene, as a Wnt signaling modulator, is frequently inactivated by promoter methylation in many tumors including gastric cancer, breast cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma, and esophageal adenocarcinoma. However, the role of SFRP1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is not clear. In this study, we investigated the epigenetic inactivation of the SFRP1 gene in ESCC. METHODS: Nine ESCC cell lines, two immortalized human esophageal epithelial cell lines, twenty ESCC tissues, and paired adjacent nontumor tissues were analyzed in the study. Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), bisulfite sequencing, reverse-transcription PCR, immunohistochemistry, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay were used to detect SFRP1 promoter methylation, expression of the SFRP1 gene, and histone modification in the SFRP1 promoter region. RESULTS: The SFRP1 promoter was found to be highly methylated in 95% (19/20) of the ESCC tissues and in nine ESCC cell lines, compared with 65% (13/20) of the paired nontumor tissues. Moreover, we confirmed that complete methylation of the SFRP1 gene promoter was correlated with its greatly reduced expression level. After individual treatment with 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (DAC) and trichostatin A (TSA), the messenger RNA (mRNA) level of the SFRP1 gene was not obviously rescued in the EC9706 cell line. Combined incubation with DAC and TSA can, however, substantially increase the SFRP1 mRNA expression level in the EC9706 cell line. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay showed that acetylated histone H3 and H4 were found in the SFRP1 promoter region. CONCLUSION: Promoter hypermethylation of SFRP1 is a frequent event in ESCC. Promoter methylation and histone acetylation may cooperatively regulate expression of the SFRP1 gene.

RESUMEN

Choledochal cyst is an uncommon disease usually seen in young women and can be divided into five types. We report a 66-year-old woman who was diagnosed with types I and III bile duct cyst simultaneously after surgery, which is a rare type of bile duct cyst.

RESUMEN

A highly efficient diastereoselective synthesis of cyclohexadiene epoxide derivatives with a multi-stereocenter has been developed via a tandem ylide Michael addition/epoxidation. By employing a chiral sulfonium ylide, up to 96% ee can be achieved in good yields.
