RESUMEN

Depth of field (DOF) and resolution are mutually restricted in integral imaging (II) display. To overcome the trade-offs, we propose an II display system that simultaneously enhances the DOF and resolution. The system consists of a transmissive mirror device (TMD), a semi-transparent mirror (STM), and two II display units. Each II display unit consists of a 4K display screen and a micro-lens array (MLA). Benefiting from the parallel placement of the TMD and the STM, two central depth planes are reconstructed, which effectively enhances the DOF. Meanwhile, the resolution in the overlapping DOF region is increased to two times due to the interpolation of the light field information from two II display units. The impact of the distance between the two II display units and the TMD on the 3D image quality is analyzed. In geometric optics, a distance between the II two display units and the TMD is optimized to eliminate ghost images. In wave optics, a distance is optimized to eliminate 3D pixel gaps by exploiting the diffraction effect of the TMD. Both the geometric and wave optics are considered simultaneously to obtain a high-quality 3D image without ghost images and 3D pixel gaps. A DOF and resolution-enhanced II display system is developed, and the experimental results verify its feasibility.

Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most serious postoperative complications. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of preoperative body composition for AL in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: We first reviewed data from 3,681 patients who underwent radical CRC resection 2013-2021 in our hospital, and 60 patients were diagnosed with AL after surgery. We designed a nested case-control study and two controls were randomly selected for each case according to the time and position of surgery. Body composition was measured at the level of the third lumbar vertebra based on computed tomography (CT) images. The risk factors of AL were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis. Nomogram was built using binary regression analysis and assessed for clinical usefulness, calibration, and discrimination. Results: In the multivariate analysis, gender, blood glucose, nutrition risk screening (NRS), skeletal muscle area (SMA) and visceral fat area (VFA) were independent risk factors for developing anastomotic leakage after surgery. The prognostic model had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.848 (95% CI, 0.781-0.914). The calibration curve showed good consistency between the predicted and observed outcomes. Decision curve analysis indicated that patients with colorectal cancer can benefit from the prediction model. Conclusions: The nomogram that combined with gender, blood glucose, NRS, SMA, and VFA had good predictive accuracy and reliability to AL. It may be conveniently for clinicians to predict AL preoperatively and be useful for guiding treatment decisions.

PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of magnetic resonance imaging-based proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) measurements of rotator cuff muscles between two readers and three different scanners. METHODS: Twenty-seven volunteers underwent serial shoulder MRI examinations of both left and right sides on one 1.5-T MRI scanner and two 3.0-T MRI scanners. Two independent readers measured muscular PDFF of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus/teres minor muscle, and subscapularis. MR spectroscopy-based proton density fat fraction (MRS-PDFF) was regarded as the reference standard for assessing accuracy. A "coffee break" examination method was used to test the repeatability of each scanner. Bland-Altman plots, Pearson correlation, and linear regression analysis were used to assess bias and linearity. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Friedman test were applied to evaluate repeatability and reproducibility. RESULTS: MRI-PDFF measurements indicated strong linearity (R2 = 0.749) and small bias (-0.18%) in comparison with the MRS-PDFF measurements. A very strong positive Pearson correlation (r = 0.955-0.986) between the PDFF estimates of the two repeat scans indicated excellent repeatability. The PDFF measurements showed high reproducibility, with a strong positive Pearson correlation (r = 0.668-0.698) and a small mean bias (-0.04 to -0.10%) across different scanners. CONCLUSION: MRI-PDFF measurements of rotator cuff muscles were highly accurate, repeatable, and reproducible across different readers and scanners, leading us to the conclusion that PDFF can be a reliable and robust quantitative imaging biomarker for longitudinal or multi-center studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The adverse impact of chronic methamphetamine (MA) use on cognitive function has been described in previous studies, but limited evidence is available for abstinent users from prospective longitudinal studies. The aim of the present study was to assess cognitive function of varying abstinent duration. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted with baseline and four follow-up interviews every 6 months over 2 years in 358 MA users in Guangdong province, China. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to measure cognitive function. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) analysis was used to examine within-subjects relationships between abstinence and cognitive consequences over time. RESULTS: The repeated measure analysis of variance showed significant differences in the total MoCA score and all subscale scores (except Orientation) in the 24 months follow-up. The GEE model showed that abstinence from MA in the past 6 months predicted an increase of 0.66 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.29 to 1.05, p = .002) in MoCA score changes compared with the nonabstinence MA users. Abstinence in the past 12, 18, and 24 months predicted an increase in MoCA total score changes of 1.25 (95% CI = -0.23 to 2.74), 2.15 (95% CI = -0.79 to 5.09), and 5.28 (95% CI = -2.01 to 12.58), respectively, but none of these was statistically significant. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive function was potentially improved following 6 months of MA abstinence. SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: This study extends prior research by long-term follow-up in big sample MA abstinence users. Findings from study support the need for a comprehensive measure to decrease MA use and promote the recovery of cognitive impairment.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common side effect of cancer treatment. The factors influencing CINV in breast cancer patients remain unclear. In this study, we developed a nomogram for predicting the occurrence of CINV in this group using prospective clinical data. We pooled data from multiple studies which focused on the emetogenic chemotherapy. Then, we collected 334 breast cancer patients at Hunan Cancer Hospital (training set) to analyze the demographic and clinical variables. Using multivariate logistic regression, we identified the five significant factors that were associated with CINV: history of CINV, chemotherapy regimen, chemotherapy cycle, metastasis, and symptoms of distress. Then, we construct a prediction nomogram. The external validation set comprised an additional 66 patients. The reliability of the nomogram was assessed by bootstrap resampling. The C-index was 0.78 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.73-0.85) for the training set and 0.74 (95% CI, 0.62-0.85) for the validation set. Calibration curves showed good concordance between predicted and actual occurrence of CINV. In conclusions, our nomogram model can reliably predict the occurrence of CINV in breast cancer patients based on five significant variables, which might be useful in clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a common and serious complication in patients with cirrhosis. However, little is known about PVT in patients with cirrhosis and acute decompensation (AD). We investigated the prevalence and clinical significance of PVT in nonmalignant patients with cirrhosis and AD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 2 cohorts of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic liver disease who participated in the Chinese AcuTe on CHronic LIver FailurE study, established by the Chinese Chronic Liver Failure Consortium, from January 2015 through December 2016 (n = 2600 patients) and July 2018 through January 2019 (n = 1370 patients). We analyzed data on the prevalence, clinical manifestations, and risk factors of PVT from 2826 patients with cirrhosis, with and without AD. RESULTS: The prevalence of PVT in patients with cirrhosis and AD was 9.36%, which was significantly higher than in patients with cirrhosis without AD (5.24%) (P = .04). Among patients with cirrhosis and AD, 63.37% developed PVT recently (the first detected PVT with no indication of chronic PVT). Compared with patients without PVT, a significantly higher proportion of patients with PVT had variceal bleeding (47.33% vs 19.63%; P < .001) and patients with PVT had a significantly higher median serum level of D-dimer (2.07 vs 1.25; P < .001). Splenectomy and endoscopic sclerotherapy were independent risk factors for PVT in patients with cirrhosis and AD. The 1-year mortality rate did not differ significantly between patients with vs without PVT. CONCLUSIONS: In an analysis of data from 2826 patients with cirrhosis, a significantly higher proportion of those with AD had PVT than those without AD. PVT was associated with increased variceal bleeding, which would increase the risk for AD. Strategies are needed to prevent PVT in patients with cirrhosis, through regular screening, to reduce portal hypertension. ClinicalTrials.gov no: NCT02457637 and NCT03641872.

Two different mixed sludges (aerobic nitrifying sludge and ANAMMOX-denitrification sludge:R1, and anaerobic digestion flocculent sludge and ANAMMOX-denitrification sludge:R2), were used as inocula in two UBF reactors to enrich Anammox bacteria. Both kinds of mixed sludge set up the Anammox process successfully. It took 36 days for R1, while R2 required 53 days. Nitrogen removal rates of R1 and R2 were high during the whole operation. During the stable operation stage, the removal rates of NH4+-N, NO2--N, and TN were about 99.92%, 96.64%, and 81.87% for R1; and 97.54%, 94.91%, and 80.98% for R2. Illumina High-throughput Sequencing revealed Candidatus Kuenenia was in the top six taxa in the two reactors with 3.22% relative abundance in R1 and 2.35% in R2 after the successful start-up. Simulation results indicated that the Modified Stover-Kincannon model and the second-order model were appropriate models. It was deduced that the N-removal potential of R1 was a little greater than that of R2 after comparing the projected maximum substrate removal rate Umax of the two reactors.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis is a key harm associated with methamphetamine (MA) use. This study examined the relationship between the duration of MA use and risk of psychotic symptoms. METHODS: A cohort of 528 individuals with chronic MA use was followed for two years after leaving treatment center in Guangdong, China. Psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale at baseline and four follow-up visits (6, 12, 18 and 24 months after baseline). MA use during the past six months was investigated at each assessment. Generalized Estimating Equations for longitudinal panel data were developed to examine the risk of MA-associated psychotic symptoms among individuals with different durations of MA use. 340 MA users who completed at least one follow-up were included in the analysis. RESULTS: During 6-month intervals, participants who reported MA use showed a two-fold increase in the risk of psychotic symptoms compared to those with no MA use (odds ratio [OR] = 2.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.33-3.49). A dose-response effect was found between the duration of MA use and the risk of psychotic symptoms (continued 12-month MA use vs. no use: OR = 2.84, 95% CI = 1.39-5.77; continued 18-month MA use vs. no use: OR = 9.93, 95% CI = 3.58-27.57). There was no assessment for 24-month intervals due to a small sample size of the continuous use group. CONCLUSIONS: Longer periods of MA use predicted a higher risk of experiencing psychotic symptoms. Early prevention of MA use could help reduce the risk of psychosis in MA users.

Chronic methamphetamine (MA) use is associated with psychiatric symptoms. This study explored pattern of co-occurring psychiatric symptoms in MA users and their relationship to duration of MA use. A cross-sectional study was conducted among MA users at the Shenzhen Compulsory Drug Detoxification Center from April 2012 to October 2015. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory were used to assess psychiatric symptoms. Among 1277 MA users, 57.6% participants had any type of psychiatric symptoms including depressive, anxiety and psychotic symptoms. A dose-response relationship was found between duration of MA use and risk of psychiatric symptoms. The odds ratios (OR) of depressive symptoms increased with the duration of MA use (1-5 years vs. < 1 year: 1.74 [95% CI, 1.24-2.42]; ≥ 5 years vs. < 1 year: 2.07 [1.19-3.61]), so did the ORs of co-occurring anxiety and depressive symptoms (1-5 years: 1.74 [1.20-2.51]; ≥ 5 years: 3.09 [1.76-5.40]). Methamphetamine-dependent individuals were four-times more likely to experience any type of psychiatric symptoms than non-dependent users. The prevalence of psychiatric symptoms was high in chronic MA users and increased with MA use duration. Early prevention and treatment strategies targeting both MA use and associated psychiatric symptoms are needed.

Overexposure to Manganese (Mn) has been known to disrupt neurotransmitter release in the brain. However, the underlying mechanisms of Mn exposure on neurotransmitter vesicle release are still unclear. The current study investigated whether Mn-induced alpha-synuclein protein overexpression could disrupt the Rab3 cycle leading to synaptic vesicle fusion dysfunction. After the neurons were exposed to Mn (100 µM) for 0, 6, 12, 24 h, [Ca2+]i, alpha-synuclein and Rab3A-GTP protein expression increased gradually. However, the interaction of synaptotagmin/Rab3-GAP and Rab3A-GTP/Rab3-GAP decreased significantly in response to Mn treatment for 12-24 h. Remarkably, the treatment with Mn caused an increase in the interaction of alpha-synuclein/Rab3A-GTP. To further validate that Mn-induced alpha-synuclein disrupted the proteins interactions of Rab3A-GTP/Rab3-GAP, the lentivirus vector of alpha-synuclein/negative shRNA was transfected in primary cultured neurons to knockdown the expression of alpha-synuclein. Our results showed that the interaction of Rab3A-GTP/Rab3-GAP in alpha-synuclein knockdown neurons treated with Mn for 24 h had a significant recovery. These results suggested that Mn-induced alpha-synuclein protein overexpression, which bound to Rab3A-GTP and inhibited the GTP hydrolysis of Rab3 protein, disrupted the Rab3 cycle leading to synaptic vesicle fusion dysfunction.

The present study pooled the prevalence of sleep disturbances and depression in community-dwelling older adults (mean age≥60years) and quantified the strength of evidence of the relationship between these two problems. From 23 cross-sectional studies and five sets of baseline data, a high pooled prevalence of sleep disturbances (30.5%), depressive symptoms (18.1%) and coexisting disorders (10.6%) were found. In the 23 cohort studies, self-reported sleep disturbances increased the risk of the onset of depression (relative risk [RR]=1.92). Persistent sleep disturbances increased the risk of the development (RR=3.90), recurrence (RR=7.70), and worsening (RR=1.46) of depression in older adults. Little support was found for a predictive role for objective sleep characteristics in the development of depression. Older adults with depression had a higher risk of developing (RR=1.72) and worsening (RR=1.73) symptoms of sleep disturbances. This review emphasizes the importance of timely interventions in incipient sleep disturbances and depression among older adults, preventing the development of more serious comorbidities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Methamphetamine (MA) use is increasingly prevalent in East and Southeast Asia and commonly associated with cognitive impairment. The present study estimated the characteristics of cognitive impairment and explored the associated potential factors among chronic MA users. METHODS: The data were from the baseline visit of a longitudinal study among synthetic drug users. The baseline survey was conducted in detoxification and rehabilitation centers in Guangdong province, China, from September to December in 2013. A total of 528 participants were included in our analysis. Cognitive impairment was measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Logistic regression was performed to explore the risk factors associated with cognitive impairment. RESULTS: Approximately 69.89% of the study participants exhibited cognitive impairment according to MoCA scores. Multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that older age (≥30 years old), a longer duration of MA use (>24 months), and a higher frequency of MA use (everyday) were associated with cognitive impairment, with adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of 1.58 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-2.34), 1.53 (95%CI: 1.01-2.31), and 1.55 (95%CI: 1.05-2.30), respectively. Methamphetamine users that had a higher level of education had a lower risk of cognitive impairment(OR = .59; 95%CI: .38-.93). CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Cognitive impairment occurred frequently among chronic MA users. The causal relationship between cognitive impairment and MA use needs to be ascertained in longitudinal studies in future work. Our study provides evidence for the development of intervention strategies for the prevention of MA use and associated cognitive impairment. (Am J Addict 2017;26:145-151).

The volume loading of upflow blanket filter increased from 0.52 kg·(m3·d)-1to 2.75 kg·(m3·d)-1 by improving the influent NH4+-N and NO2--N concentrations. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N, NO2--N and TN increased from 76.18%, 53.47%, 55.66% to 94.04%, 86.97%, 82.96% respectively. Meanwhile, the microbial community of UBF ANAMMOX reactor was analyzed by Illumina high-throughput sequencing during the initial and later operational process. The results indicated that the denitrifying bacteria coexisted in the reactor. The percentages of Planctomycetes, Proteobacteria and Nitrospirae in the sludge were 27.9%-39.9%, 1.1%-26.4% and 0.035%-0.188%, respectively. The proportions of Planctomycetes and Proteobacteria increased from 1.1%, 27.9% in the enrichment stage to 26.4%, 39.9% in the stable operation stage respectively. In addition, Planctomycetes increased significantly. The proportion of Brocadiacea reached 24.57%. Therefore, Brocadiacea became the dominant bacteria in the phylum Planctomycete, which contained Candidatus brocadia. The alpha diversity index and relative abundance of clustering figure indicated that the diversity of microbial community decreased gradually and the structure of microbial community changed obviously.
