RESUMEN

Aqueous zinc-metal batteries (AZMBs) have received tremendous attentions due to their high safety, low cost, environmental friendliness, and simple process. However, zinc-metal still suffer from uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions that reduce the Coulombic efficiency (CE) and lifetime of AZMBs. These problems which are closely related to the active water are not well-solved. Here, an ultrathin crack-free metal-organic framework (ZIF-7x -8) with rigid sub-nanopore (0.3 nm) is constructed on Zn-metal to promote the de-solvation of zinc-ions before approaching Zn-metal surface, reduce the contacting opportunity between water and Zn, and consequently eliminate water-induced corrosion and side-reactions. Due to the presence of rigid and ordered sub-nanochannels, Zn-ions deposits on Zn-metal follow a highly ordered manner, resulting in a dendrite-free Zn-metal with negligible by-products, which significantly improve the reversibility and lifespan of Zn-metals. As a result, Zn-metal protected by ultrathin crack-free ZIF-7x -8 layer exhibits excellent cycling stability (over 2200 h) and extremely-high 99.96% CE during 6000 cycles. The aqueous PANI-V2 O5 //ZIF-7x -8@Zn full-cell preserves 86% high-capacity retention even after ultra-long 2000 cycles. The practical pouch-cell can also be cycled for more than 120 cycles. It is believed that the simple strategy demonstrated in this work can accelerate the practical utilizations of AZMBs.

Creativity is a primary factor in driving transformational change. This study explored the impact of leader humor on employee creativity (incremental and radical creativity) from the perspective of employee voice. Data were collected from 812 Chinese employees through multipoint surveys. Through the surveys, we found that (1) leader humor has a significant positive effect on employee incremental and radical creativity; (2) promotive/prohibitive voice mediates the relationship between leader humor and employee incremental/radical creativity separately; (3) contradictory thinking moderates the effect of leader humor on prohibitive voice and further moderates the indirect effect of leader humor on radical creativity; and (4) the moderated mediation model mainly applies to state-owned enterprises rather than private-owned enterprises. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

The importance of humble leadership has garnered attention from both researchers and practitioners. Unfortunately, despite the accumulation of recent findings on the effects of leader humility, a quantitative review remains scant. In addressing this void, this study is among the first to conduct a meta-analytic review of humble leadership and its outcomes. Eighty-four correlations (N = 16,534) from 53 independent studies are synthesized. The authors found that: (a) humble leadership is positively related to affective commitment (ρ = 0.56), affective trust (ρ = 0.62), creativity (ρ = 0.39), engagement (ρ = 0.40), leader-member exchange (LMX) (ρ = 0.58), job satisfaction (ρ = 0.51), organizational identification (ρ = 0.48), psychological empowerment (ρ = 0.33), self-efficacy (ρ = 0.24), task performance (ρ = 0.33), and voice (ρ = 0.34); and that (b) humble leadership contributes a significant incremental variance beyond transformational, servant, and ethical leadership in several crucial criterion variables, providing solid evidence for the construct's uniqueness. However, humble leadership does not explain incremental variance in some criterion variables, indicating that future studies should control for the influence of some positive leadership (e.g., transformational and servant leadership). Age, gender, study design, country, and year partially moderate the correlations of interest. We discuss our findings with caution and propose future research directions.

A highly sensitive quantum dot (QD)-based western blot assay with extended dynamic range was developed. Bimodal size distribution QD (BQ) immunoprobes composed of small size single QD (7.3 nm) and big size QD nanobead (QB) (82.9 nm) were employed for fluorescent western blot immunoassay on a membrane. Small size QD immunoprobes contributed to wider dynamic range of assay, while big size QB immunoprobes provided higher detection sensitivity. This BQ-based western blot assay can achieve a wide dynamic range (from 7.8 to 4000 ng IgG) and is nearly as sensitive as commercial available ultrasensitive chemiluminescent methods, just using a simple gel imager with UV light (365 nm) excitation and red light filter (610 nm). The fluorescent signals of BQ western blot were stable for 10 min, while chemiluminescent signals faded after 1 min. Moreover, this BQ immunoprobe was utilized for the detection of housekeeping protein and specific target proteins in complex cell lysate samples. The limit of detection of housekeeping protein is 0.25 µg of cell lysate, and the signal intensities were proportional to loading protein amount in a wide range from 0.61 to 80 µg. We believe that this new strategy of bimodal size distribution nanoparticles can also be expanded for other functional nanoparticle-based biological assays to improve the sensitivity and extend the dynamic range. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics and prognostic risk factors of HLH children with central nervous system (CNS) involvement so as to provide more reference for further improving the prognosis of HLH children. METHODS: The clinical data of 45 HLH children with CNS involvement treated in our hospital from January 2006 to October 2016 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. The clinical characteristics of HLH children with CNS involvement were recorded, moreover the possible factors influencing the prognosis of HLH children with CNS involvement were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analysis through the establishment of Cox risk ratio model. RESULTS: Among 45 HLH children with CNS involvement, male was 19 cases and female was 26 cases. The median age of 4.0 years old (1.0-15.1). The detection showed that EBV found in 38 cases (84.44%), CMV infection in 1 case (2.22%), bacterial infection in 3 cases (6.67%), connection tissue disease in 1 case (2.22%) and indefinite etiology infection in 2 cases (4.44%). After lumbar puncture of 27 HLH children with CNS involvement, 10 cases (37.04%) showed cerebrospinal fluid abnormality. In addition, 22 cases showed the craniography abnormality. The follow-up results showed that the OS rate of 1 year was 46.67% (21/45), the OS rate of 3 years was 44.44% (20/45); the median survival time was 5.0 months. The OS analysis indicated that 1 years OS rate of diseased children with cerebrospinal fluid abnormality was significantly lower than that of diseased children with cerebrospinal fluid normality (10/45 vs 17/45) (P<0.05), and 1 years OS rate of diseased children who not received intrathecal injection was significantly lower that of diseased children who received intrathecal (10/45 vs 17/45) (P<0.05). The univariate analysis showed that the symptoms of nervous system, abnormal cerebrospinal fluid, absence of intrathecal injection and treatment schedule all were the risk factors affecting the prognosis of HLH children with CNS involvement (P<0.05). The multivariate analysis by Cox risk model showed that abnormal cerebrospinal fluid and absence of intrathecal injection were independent risk factors for of HLH children with CNS involvement (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The clinical prognosis of HLH children with CNS involvement is relatively poor, moreover some of HLH children with CNS involvement have neural sequelae. The cerebrospinal fluid abnormality and absence of intrathecal injection are independent risk factors leading to poor prognosis for HLH clildren with CNS involvement.

AIM: To explore the effects of miR-141-3p on intestinal epithelial cells in necrotizing enterocolitis and the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: The expression of miR-141-3p was significantly downregulated in serum samples of patients with NEC and LPS-treated Caco-2 cells. The in vitro assays showed that miR-141-3p mimics inhibited expression of IL-6 and TNF-α and reduced PI positive rate of the LPS-treated Caco-2 cells. Next, receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) was identified as the downstream molecule of miR-141-3p, and RIPK1 overexpression aggravated LPS-induced Caco-2 cell injury, which was ameliorated by miR-141-3p mimics. Finally, we found miR-141-3p mimics inhibited upregulation of necroptosis-related molecules and interaction of RIPK1 and RIPK3 in LPS-treated Caco-2 cells. CONCLUSION: Our research indicated that miR-141-3p protected intestinal epithelial cells from LPS damage by suppressing RIPK1-mediated inflammation and necroptosis, providing an alternative perspective to explore the pathogenesis of NEC. METHODS: Quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression of miR-141-3p in serum samples of participants and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated Caco-2 cells. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, Propidium Iodide (PI) staining and detection of inflammatory cytokines were performed to evaluate the role of miR-141-3p in LPS-treated Caco-2 cells. TargetScanHuman database and luciferase reporter gene assay were utilized to confirm the direct downstream molecule of miR-141-3p. Western blot analysis was used to explore the mechanism.

This study determined the potential of formic acid plus monolaurin (FA + ML) as an alternative to antibiotics in diet when piglets are challenged with ETEC. Piglets fed the FA + ML diet had lower fecal score and rectal temperature after the ETEC challenge. In addition, FA + ML supplementation induced lower plasma TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1ß concentration postchallenge, downregulated the mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and TLR4 in the ileum and TLR4 and CFTR in the jejunum. Phosphorylation levels of NF-κB p65 and MAPK p38 were reduced in the ileum of piglets fed FA + ML diet. Supplementation of FA + ML increased the relative abundance of genera Lactobacillus especially Lactobacillus amylovorus species and decreased the genus abundances of Actinobacillus, unidentified Enterobacteriaceae, Moraxella. Collectively, the combination of formic acid and monolaurin in diets have the potential to be an antibiotic alternative to mitigate inflammatory response in piglets challenged with ETEC.

This study aims to evaluate whether diets containing mixture of formic and propionic acid alone or supplemented with either capric acid or Bacillus Licheniformis can alleviate immune inflammatory response of piglets challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). A total of 30 weaning pigs were assigned to 5 diets, without additive (CON), with antibiotics (ATB), with 1% organic acid (OA; 64% formic and 25% propionic acid), with OA plus 0.2% capric acid (OA + CRA), and with OA plus 0.02% probiotic (Bacillus Licheniformis; OA + PB). After oral challenge with ETEC on day 10, the feces and plasma of all pigs were collected at different time points. Four additive treatments all decreased rectal temperature (RT) at 9 h and fecal scores (FS) at 24 h after challenge (P < 0.05), while at 9 h after challenge, inclusion of OA induced a decrease of RT compared with OA + CRA and OA + PB (P < 0.05). In plasma, concentration of interleukin (IL)-1ß was reduced with the addition of ATB and OA at 24 h and 48 h after challenge and it is lower in OA group than OA + CRA group at 24 h after challenge (P < 0.05). Diets with ATB, OA, and OA + PB caused a decrease of the concentrations of IL-6 in plasma at 9 h after challenge (P < 0.05). The four additives treated piglets showed decreased concentrations of plasma tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ at 9 h and 24 h after challenge, respectively (P < 0.05). In conclusion, OA supplementation alleviated the inflammatory response and reduced diarrhea incidence in piglets challenged with ETEC. However, no further improvements were observed when OA supplemented with CRA or probiotics.

Recent studies have shown that L-carnitine supplementation of sows during pregnancy and lactation enhances their reproductive performance, but the underlying mechanisms are still needed to be further confirmed. This study was conducted to investigate the function of L-carnitine on placental development, milk nutrient content and release of hormones in sows. In this experiment, 40 multiparous crossbred sows (Yorkshire × Landrace) were allotted to two groups fed diets with or without a supplemental 50 mg/kg L-carnitine. The experimental diets were fed from d 1 post-coitus until d 21 post-partum. L-carnitine-treated sow had fewer weak piglets (p < 0.05) and a greater percentage of oestrus by 5 after 5-d post-partum (p < 0.05) than control sows. The percentage fat from colostrum was greater in L-carnitine-treated sow than control sows (p < 0.05). L-carnitine-treated sows had greater plasma concentrations of triglyceride and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and lesser plasma concentrations of glucose and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP-3) on day 60 of pregnancy (p < 0.05). A clearer structure of chorions, better-developed capillaries and absence of necrosis were observed in L-carnitine-treated sows compared with control sows. The protein abundance of IGF-1 and IGF-2 in placental chorions was greater in L-carnitine-treated sows compared with control sows (p < 0.05). This study suggests that sows fed an L-carnitine supplemented diet during pregnancy improved reproductive performance through enhancement of placental development and by increasing IGF concentrations in blood plasma and placental chorions.

Leucine (Leu) plays an important role in protein synthesis and metabolism. The present study tested whether Leu supplementation in the diet for sows during late pregnancy could improve piglet birth weight, and it also investigated the possible underlying mechanism. Two hundred sows at day 70 of pregnancy were selected and assigned to four groups fed with following four diets until farrowing, respectively: corn and soybean meal-based diet group (CON), CON + 0.40% Leu, CON + 0.80% Leu, and CON + 1.20% Leu. We found that supplementing with 0.80% Leu significantly increased mean piglet birth weight ( P < 0.05). Supplementation with 0.40, 0.80, and 1.20% Leu increased the plasma concentration of Leu, while decreasing the plasma concentrations of valine (Val) and isoleucine (Ile) in both farrowing sows and newborn piglets ( P < 0.05). The protein expressions of amino acid transporters (including LAT1, SNAT1, SNAT2, 4F2hc, and rBAT) in duodenum, jejunum, ileum, longissimus dorsi muscle of newborn piglets, and placenta of sows showed a difference among the CON group and Leu supplemented groups. Expressions of p-mTOR, p-4E-BP1, and p-S6K1 in longissimus dorsi muscle were also enhanced in each of the supplemental Leu groups compared to CON ( P < 0.05). Collectively, these results indicated that 0.40-0.80% Leu supplementation during late gestation enhanced birth weight of fetal pigs by increasing protein synthesis through modulation of the plasma amino acids profile, amino acid transporters expression, and mTOR signaling pathway.

The present study aimed to determine the expression of microRNA-146a (miR-146a) in the plasma of children with asthma, and to investigate the effect of miR-146a on the proliferation and apoptosis of bronchial smooth muscle cells (BSMCs). Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the expression levels of miR-146a mimics and its inhibitor. A Cell Counting kit-8 assay was performed to examine the proliferation of BSMCs. Caspase-3/7 activity was determined using a Caspase-Glo 3/7 kit. To measure the expression levels of proteins associated with apoptosis, western blotting was performed. The target gene of miR-146a was identified using a dual-luciferase reporter assay. The plasma levels of miR-146a in children with asthma were significantly higher compared with those in healthy children. Enhanced miR-146a expression inhibited the proliferation of BSMCs. BSMC apoptosis was promoted by miR-146a. The mechanism underlying the miR-146a-induced promotion of BSMC apoptosis may be its direct targeting of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which affects downstream signaling pathways. In conclusion, miR-146a expression in asthma inhibits the proliferation and promotes the apoptosis of BSMCs by direct targeting of EGFR.

The effect of controlled drainage (CD) on ammonia volatilization (AV) losses from paddy fields under controlled irrigation (CI) was investigated by managing water table control levels using a lysimeter. Three drainage treatments were implemented, namely, controlled water table depth 1 (CWT1), controlled water table depth 2 (CWT2), and controlled water table depth 3 (CWT3). As the water table control levels increased, irrigation water volumes in the CI paddy fields decreased. AV losses from paddy fields reduced due to the increases in water table control levels. Seasonal AV losses from CWT1, CWT2, and CWT3 were 59.8, 56.7, and 53.0 kg N ha(-1), respectively. AV losses from CWT3 were 13.1% and 8.4% lower than those from CWT1 and CWT2, respectively. A significant difference in the seasonal AV losses was confirmed between CWT1 and CWT3. Less weekly AV losses followed by TF and PF were also observed as the water table control levels increased. The application of CD by increasing water table control levels to a suitable level could effectively reduce irrigation water volumes and AV losses from CI paddy fields. The combination of CI and CD may be a feasible water management method of reducing AV losses from paddy fields.
