RESUMEN

Objective: Although some serious games have been developed for physical therapy, little work has been conducted through a participatory design approach. Therefore, a game prototype was developed, which involved related stakeholders in the design process. Materials and Methods: The iterative participatory design process was adopted with the input of 18 patients with frozen shoulder symptoms, 4 health professionals, 2 game designers, and 5 researchers in an iterative process to design, test, and evaluate the game prototype. In total, 17 patients participated in the interviews to explore their needs and desires for a serious game. The health professionals participated in the interviews to understand the medical requirement and experience pertaining to frozen shoulder and were included in the workshop to give feedback on the game prototype. At the conclusion of the iterative design process, a Kinect-based prototype game with three levels was used for a case study with one patient who was diagnosed with frozen shoulder and has been receiving medical treatment in the hospital. Results: Based on the outcomes derived from data collected among diverse stakeholders, the prototype game underwent iterative development by the team and was assessed by a participant with frozen shoulder symptoms. Findings revealed that the participant demonstrated enhanced shoulder mobility and a reduction in pain intensity, despite the lack of significant improvement for health-related quality of life. Nevertheless, the participant reported a positive experience with the prototype game. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of involving diverse stakeholders in the development process to create more effective and user-centric serious games for rehabilitation. The participatory approach, exemplified by the prototype game, demonstrates potential improvements in both user experience and overall effectiveness during the rehabilitation process.

Electrochemical water oxidation is known as the anodic reaction of water splitting. Efficient design and earth-abundant electrocatalysts are crucial to this process. Herein, we report a family of catalysts (1-3) bearing bis(benzimidazole)pyrazolide ligands (H 2 L1-H 2 L3). H 2 L3 contains electron-donating substituents and noninnocent components, resulting in catalyst 3 exhibiting unique performance. Kinetic studies show first-order kinetic dependence on [3] and [H2O] under neutral and alkaline conditions. In contrast to previously reported catalyst 1, catalyst 3 exhibits an insignificant kinetic isotope effect of 1.25 and zero-order dependence on [NaOH]. Based on various spectroscopic methods and computational findings, the L3Co2 III(µ-OH) species is proposed to be the catalyst resting state and the nucleophilic attack of water on this species is identified as the turnover-limiting step of the catalytic reaction. Computational studies provided insights into how the interplay between the electronic effect and ligand noninnocence results in catalyst 3 acting via a different reaction mechanism. The variation in the turnover-limiting step and catalytic potentials of species 1-3 leads to their catalytic rates being independent of the overpotential, as evidenced by Eyring analysis. Overall, we demonstrate how ligand design may be utilized to retain good water oxidation activity at low overpotentials.

PURPOSE: To investigate the rate of axial length elongation and high myopia progression in operated eyes before and after posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) surgery. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Children with pathological myopia treated with PSR at Beijing Tongren Hospital between May 2013 and May 2020 were recruited into the PSR surgery group. Children matched for age and myopia were recruited into the control group. All children underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations. The presurgical and postsurgical rates of axial length elongation and myopic (spherical equivalent) progression were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 35 PSR patients were included in the study. The mean age was 6.5±3.0 years (range 2 to 14 years). Mean follow-up was 544 days (range 216 to 1657 days). The rate of axial length elongation was significantly less after posterior scleral reinforcement surgery (0.505±0.048mm per year prior to surgery; 0.382±0.045mm per year after surgery, P<0.001). The rate of myopic progression decreased after posterior scleral reinforcement surgery (1.162±0.118 D per year prior to surgery; 0.153±0.437 D per year after surgery, P=0.0239). There was no statistically significant difference in axial length elongation or myopic progression between pre-inclusion and post-inclusion in the control group. Moreover, the children's best-corrected visual acuity was significantly improved after posterior scleral reinforcement surgery (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Posterior scleral reinforcement surgery effectively decreased the rate of high myopic progression and axial length elongation in children.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death that is iron-dependent and distinct from autophagy, apoptosis, and necroptosis. It is primarily characterised by a decrease in glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) activity, or by the accumulation of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Renal fibrosis is a common pathological change in the progression of various primary and secondary renal diseases to end-stage renal disease and poses a serious threat to human health with high morbidity and mortality. Multiple pathways contribute to the development of renal fibrosis, with ferroptosis playing a crucial role in renal fibrosis pathogenesis due to its involvement in the production of ROS. Ferroptosis is related to several signalling pathways, including System Xc-/GPX4, abnormal iron metabolism and lipid peroxidation. A number of studies have indicated that ferroptosis is closely involved in the process of renal fibrosis caused by various kidney diseases such as glomerulonephritis, renal ischaemia-reperfusion injury, diabetic nephropathy and renal calculus. Identifying the underlying molecular mechanisms that determine cell death would open up new insights to address a therapeutic strategy to renal fibrosis. The review aimed to browse and summarise the known mechanisms of ferroptosis that may be associated with biological reactions of renal fibrosis.

Binasal quadrantanopia is a rare type of visual field defect characteristic of vision loss in either the upper or lower quadrants of both nasal visual fields. The affected individuals often exhibit impairments in peripheral vision, leading to difficulties in various daily activities such as navigation, object recognition, and hazard avoidance. The consequences of binasal quadrantanopia can be profound, affecting the individual's quality of life and functional independence. However, due to its atypical presentation and overlapping clinical features with other visual field defects, accurately pinpointing the lesion's precise location for further management becomes a complex task. Here, we present an unusual case of binasal quadrantanopia caused by bilateral anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) and aim to explore the unique characteristics, etiology, and diagnostic approaches associated with binasal quadrantanopia, shedding light on the challenges encountered in lesion localization.

Taking a city in Guangdong Province as the research area, the concentration and spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals in the surface soil were studied to clarify the situation of soil heavy metal pollution and priority control factors, providing basic data for the prevention and control of soil heavy metal pollution in the city. The content characteristics of heavy metals in 221 soil samples in the city were analyzed, and the potential health risk assessment and source analysis were carried out through the Monte Carlo model, the potential health risk assessment (HRA) model, and the PMF receptor model. It was found that heavy metals ω(As), ω(Hg), ω(Cd), ω(Pb), ω(Cr), ω(Cu), ω(Ni), and ω(Zn) in the soil of the city were 18.16, 0.43, 1.46, 68.57, 98.34, 64.19, 26.53, and 257.32 mg·kg-1, respectively, with a moderate to high degree of variation. Except for Ni concentration, the soil concentrations of other heavy metal elements exceeded the background values of soil in Guangdong Province to a certain extent, and the concentrations of Cd and Zn exceeded the national secondary standards, resulting in severe heavy metal pollution; the main sources of heavy metals were industrial sources, and natural parent materials, lead battery manufacturing, transportation, artificial cultivation, and pesticide and fertilizer inputs also had an undeniable impact on the accumulation of heavy metals in the soil. Heavy metals in the soil had a certain degree of tolerable carcinogenic health risk for both children and adults, whereas non-carcinogenic risks could be ignored. The potential health risk of children was greater than that of adults, and the main exposure route was through oral intake. The input sources of pesticides and fertilizers and As should be the main controlling factors for the health risks of heavy metals in the city's soil, followed by mixed sources and Cr. There were differences in the spatial distribution characteristics and relative pollution levels of heavy metals, and it is necessary to deepen zoning monitoring and control, strengthen soil pollution prevention and control, and reduce human input of heavy metals in soil.

BACKGROUND: Many senior adults are at risk of mental and physical disorders due to a lack of sufficient exercise. Therefore, adherent exercise should be urgently promoted to improve senior adults' muscle strength, preventing falls and conditions caused by physical and cognitive decline. However, off-the-shelf exercise games, so-called exergames, are mainly targeted at the younger generation or children, while senior adults are neglected, when this age group strongly needs exercise. Exergames could serve as a health intervention for promoting exercise. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate senior adults' experience, perceptions, and acceptance of game technology to promote exercise in order to suggest game design guidelines. METHODS: In this usability study, participants engaged in playing Nintendo Switch and Xbox Kinect games, after which semistructured interviews were conducted. Before the gameplay, the participants provided their background information, exercise habits, and use of technology products. Next, all participants completed a workshop including 3 activities (brief instructions on how to play the games: 20 minutes; playing the selected exergames: 80 minutes; semistructured interviews: 20 minutes) for 2 hours a day for 3 days each. The participants played the latest Nintendo Switch games (eg, Just Dance, Boxing, Ring Fit Adventure) and Xbox Kinect games (eg, Kinect Adventures!, Mini Games). Just Dance, Zumba, and Boxing were played in activity 1; Ring Fit Adventure and Mini Games in activity 2; and Kinect Adventures! in activity 3. Reflexive thematic analysis was applied to identify the relative themes generated from the interviews. RESULTS: In total, 22 participants (mean age 70.4, SD 6.1 years) were enrolled in the workshop in May 2021. The results of the generated themes included incomprehension of game instructions, psychological perception of game technology, and game art preferences. The subthemes generated from game art preferences included favorite game genres, characters, and scenes. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant need for customized game tutorials considering senior adults' cognitive and physical aging. Furthermore, the adventure game genre is preferable to other games. Humanlike game characters are preferable, especially those with a fit and healthy body shape. Nature scenes are more enjoyable than indoor stages or rooms. Furthermore, the game intensity design and playing time should be carefully planned to meet the World Health Organization's criteria for physical activity in older adults. Intelligent recommendation systems might be helpful to support older adults with various health conditions. The guidelines suggested in this study might be beneficial for game design, exercise training, and game technology adoption of exergames for older adults to improve health.

In order to comprehensively study the pollution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of Guangzhou, 222 topsoil samples were collected and analyzed. The ecological risk of soil PAHs pollution was evaluated using the effect interval low/median method (ERL/ERM) and the (BaP) toxicity equivalent method, and the health risk of soil PAHs pollution was evaluated using the lifelong cancer risk increment model. The source of PAHs was analyzed using the characteristic compound ratio method and PMF model. The results indicated that: the content of surface soil (∑16PAHs) in Guangzhou was 38-11 115 µg·kg-1, with an average of 526 µg·kg-1, and 16 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon monomers showed strong variation. There was a certain degree of ecological risk of PAHs in Guangzhou, and there was already a significant ecological risk of PAHs pollution in individual sampling points, which were generally in a state of mild pollution. Based on the results of the health risk assessment, the contribution rates of total cancer risk in both adults and children were presented as follows: skin contact > ingestion of soil > respiratory intake. The health risk of children was greater than that of adults, and the overall health risk was within an acceptable range. Source analysis showed that the main sources of soil PAHs in Guangzhou were coal (37.1%); diesel (32%); coking (17.3%); and mixed sources of traffic emissions, biomass combustion, and petrochemical product volatilization (13.6%). The overall source of soil PAHs belonged to mixed sources. The research results have enriched our understanding of the pollution status of PAHs in the surface soil of Guangzhou and are helpful in promoting soil pollution prevention and control actions.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different aerobic exercise intensities on inhibitory control and cortical excitability in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: The study was conducted in a within-subject design. Twenty-four adults with ADHD completed a stop signal task and received cortical excitability assessment by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) before and after a single session of low-, moderate-, high-intensity aerobic exercise or a control intervention. RESULTS: Acute moderate-, and high-intensity aerobic exercise improved inhibitory control in adults with ADHD. Moreover, the improving effect was similar between moderate-, and high-intensity aerobic exercise conditions. As shown by the brain physiology results, short interval intracortical inhibition was significantly increased following both, moderate- and high-intensity aerobic exercise intervention conditions. Additionally, the alteration of short interval intracortical inhibition and inhibitory control improvement were positively correlated. CONCLUSIONS: The moderate-, and high-intensity aerobic exercise-dependent alterations of cortical excitability in adults with ADHD might partially explain the inhibitory control-improving effects of aerobic exercise in this population.

The palladium-catalyzed C-H iodination of 1-arylpyridine N-oxides proceeded under electrochemical oxidation conditions using I2 as an iodine source. The reaction of isoquinoline N-oxides possessing various para- or meta-substituted aryl groups at the 1-position proceeded to give the corresponding iodination products. Electron-donating groups on the aryl group facilitated the reaction to give relatively high yields of the product. The reaction was also found to be applicable to 2-aryl-3-picoline N-oxides.

The toxicity of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) to aquatic animals, particularly their effects on the cardiovascular system, has not been thoroughly investigated. In the present study, zebrafish embryos were used as a model to address this issue. After exposure to different concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 3 mg/L) of CuNPs for 96 h (4 to 100 h post-fertilization), cardiac parameters of the heart rate (HR), end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), stroke volume (SV), ejection fraction (EF), and cardiac output (CO), and vascular parameters of the aortic blood flow velocity (ABFV) and aortic diameter (AD) were examined by a video-microscopic method. Morphologically, CuNPs induced concentration-dependent pericardial edema. Although CuNPs did not alter the HR, they significantly reduced the EDV, SV, and CO at ≥0.1 mg/L, the ESV and EF at 3 mg/L, the ABFV at ≥0.1 mg/L, and the AD at ≥1 mg/L. Transcript levels of several cardiac genes, nppa, nppb, vmhc, and gata4, were also examined. CuNPs significantly suppressed nppa and nppb at ≥0.1 mg/L, gata4 at ≥0.01 mg/L, and vmhc at 1 mg/L. This study demonstrated that CuNPs can induce cardiovascular toxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations during fish embryonic development and highlight the potential ecotoxicity of CuNPs to aquatic animals.

It is still challenging to construct novel photochromic and photomagnetic materials in the field of molecular materials. Herein, the 2,4,6-tris-2-pyridyl-1,3,5-triazine (TPTz) molecule was found to display photochromic properties under room temperature light irradiation. Two mononuclear structures, [Ni(H2O)(TPTz)(C2O4)]·2H2O (1; C2O42- = oxalate) [Ni(H2O)(TPTz)(C2O4)]·0.5H2O (2), and one chain compound [Ni(TPTz)(H2-HEDP)]·2H2O (3; HEDP = hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate) were obtained by assembling TPTz with polydentate O-ligands (oxalate and phosphonate) and the paramagnetic Ni2+ ions. The electron-transfer (ET)-dominated photochromism was observable in 1 and 2 after light irradiation with the photogeneration of relatively stable radicals, and the resultant photochromism was demonstrated via UV-vis, photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, and molecular orbital calculations. Due to the denser stacking interactions between the adjacent organic molecules, 2 exhibited a faster photochromic rate than 1. Compared with 1 and 2, compound 3 did not show photochromic behavior, which was deciphered by the theoretical calculations for all of the compounds. Importantly, the magnetic couplings appeared between photogenerated radicals and paramagnetic Ni2+ ions, resulting in a scarcely photomagnetic phenomenon of 1 and 2 in the Ni-based electron transfer photochromic materials. This work enriches the available kind of ligands for the design of ET photochromic materials, putting forward a method to tune the electron transfer photochromic efficiency in the molecular materials.

Background: Lung cancer is a malignant tumor associated with high morbidity and mortality. Yiqi Yangjing recipe (YYR) is a formula of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that is commonly used for the treatment of lung cancer with good clinical efficacy. The specific anti-cancer mechanism of YYR is still unknown. We need to embark on a more in-depth pharmacological study of YYR to determine the complex compound ingredients, which could be promoted in clinical practice to achieve efficacy in prolonging recurrent metastasis of lung cancer. Methods: The cytotoxic effects of YYR on A549 cells were evaluated by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The PFKFB3-under-expressed and overexpressed A549 cell lines were constructed via PFK15 treatment and transfection, respectively. The effects of YYR on PFKFB3 messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression were detected by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blot. The pro-apoptotic and anti-glycolytic abilities of YYR were measured using flow cytometry assay and hippocampal XF96 extracellular flux analyzer. An in vivo tumorigenicity assay was performed on nude mice to confirm the anti-cancer effects of YYR. Results: YYR has a noticeable cytotoxic activity on A549 cells, with the treatment with both YYR and PFK15 significantly inducing apoptosis. YYR and PFK15 treatment reduced the extracellular acidification rate (ECAR) and oxygen consumption rate (OCR) in A549 cells. Similar to PFK15, YYR can down-regulate PFKFB3 expression, and PFKFB3 overexpression suppressed the apoptosis, which was reversed by YYR. Animal experiments confirmed that YYR was able to inhibit tumor growth, induce tumor cell apoptosis, and down-regulate PFKFB3 in tumor tissues. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that YYR promoted lung cancer cell apoptosis and inhibited energy metabolism by targeting PFKFB3. Furthermore, we believe that YYR may be a suitable supplement or alternative drug for lung cancer treatment.

Objective: Sarcopenia is a frequently observed comorbidity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due to the chronic activation of the innate immune system. Accumulating evidence has indicated that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) safely suppresses proinflammatory pathways and controls inflammation-associated disease, but its effect in reducing the risk of developing sarcopenia among RA subjects has not been established. We conducted a population-level cohort study to compare the sarcopenia risk in patients with RA who use or do not use CHM. Methods: Using claims from a nationwide insurance database, we recruited patients with newly diagnosed RA and without sarcopenia between 2002 and 2010. Propensity score matching was applied to randomly select sets of CHM users and non-CHM users to compare the sarcopenia risk until the end of 2013. The risk of new-onset sarcopenia was assessed using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: As compared to non-CHM users, those receiving CHM treatment had a lower incidence of sarcopenia (7.69 vs 9.83 per 1000 person-years). CHM was correlated with a decreased chance of sarcopenia after controlling for potential covariates. Notably, use of CHM for more than two years may diminish the risk of getting sarcopenia by about 47% when taken as prescribed. Prescriptions of several herbal formulae may benefit the reduction of sarcopenia risk, such as Yan-Hu-Suo, Bei-Mu, Da-Huang, Huang Qin, Ping-Wei-San (PWS), Shu-Jing-Huo-Xue-Tang (SJHXT) and Chuan-Xiong-Cha-Tiao-San (CXCTS). Conclusion: This study produced new evidence as it is the first to show that the longer duration of CHM use was correlated to reduced risk of sarcopenia in a dose-dependent manner, implying that CHM treatment could be embraced as a routine care strategy for preventing sarcopenia.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of transition metal (TM)-based (oxy)hydroxide is dominated by the number and nature of surface active sites, which are generally considered to be TM atoms occupying less than half of surface sites, with most being inactive oxygen atoms. Herein, based on an in situ competing growth strategy of bimetallic ions and OH- ions, a facile one-step method is proposed to modulate oxygen defects in NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH)/FeOOH heterostructure, which may trigger the single lattice oxygen mechanism (sLOM). Interestingly, by only varying the addition of H2 O2 , one can simultaneously regulate the concentration of oxygen defects, the valence of metal sites, and the ratio of components. The proper oxygen defects promote synergy between the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM, metal redox chemistry) and sLOM (oxygen redox chemistry) of OER in NiFe-based (oxy)hydroxide, practically maximizing the use of surface TM and oxygen atoms as active sites. Consequently, the optimal NiFe-LDH/FeOOH heterostructure outperforms the reported non-noble OER catalysts in electrocatalytic activity, with an overpotential of 177 mV to deliver a current density of 20 mA cm-2 and high stability. The novel strategy exemplifies a facile and versatile approach to designing highly active TM-LDH-based OER electrocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

AIH patients are often characterized by gut microbiota dysbiosis, but whether gut microbiota dysbiosis contributes to the progression of AIH remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the role of gut microbiota dysbiosis in the occurrence and development of AIH in mice with dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS) induced colitis. C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into normal group, S100-induced AIH group, and DSS+S100 group (1 % DSS in the drinking water), and the experimental cycle lasted for four weeks. We demonstrate that DSS administration aggravates hepatic inflammation and disruption of the intestinal barrier, and significantly changes the composition of gut microbiota in S100-induced AIH mice, which are mainly characterized by increased abundance of pathogenic bacteria and decreased abundance of beneficial bacteria. These results suggest that DSS administration aggravates liver injury of S100-induced AIH, which may be due to DSS induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, leading to disruption of the intestinal barrier, and then, the microbiota translocate to the liver, aggravating hepatic inflammation.

We described the proportion of adherence to the scheduled visual field (VF) examination and the associated factors in glaucoma patients in a tertiary referral center during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Taiwan. Patients with scheduled VF examinations during May 25th to July 12th, 2021, were retrospectively evaluated. Clinical characteristics including type of glaucoma, intraocular pressure (IOP) at the day of arranging VF examinations, prescriptions of anti-glaucoma medications, non-medical glaucoma treatment, length of glaucoma history, mean deviation (MD) of VF defect, and announcement of glaucoma progression were recorded. The associations between the adherence and the clinical factors were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression. There were 204 patients included, of which 37 patients (18.14%) adhered to VF examinations. A total of 161 patients (78.9%) were diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma (OAG), 27 patients (13.2%) with angle closure glaucoma, and 16 patients (7.8%) with glaucoma suspect. Most of the participants (41.2%) had mild VF defect and had been prescribed with no more than 1 bottle of anti-glaucoma medication. In the multivariate analysis, diagnosis of glaucoma suspect (P = .02) and history of SLT (P = .04) were significantly associated with better adherence. Glaucoma severity and the announcement of glaucoma progression were not significantly associated with adherence to VF examination. The COVID-19 pandemic had greatly influenced the adherence to VF examination in glaucoma patients. This study demonstrated that patients with the diagnosis of glaucoma suspect and history of SLT were more likely to adhere to VF examinations even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive, single-staged multilevel surgery (MISS MLS) could be an optimal treatment for selected patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We aim to systematically review the efficacy of MISS MLS for patients with OSA, as well as the clinical outcomes and possible complications in OSA patients before and after MISS MLS. DESIGN AND SETTING: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Six databases were searched, and the PRISMA guideline was followed. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with OSA receiving MISS MLS. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The random-effects model was adopted for the statistical synthesis. The percentage and 95% confidence interval (CI) were adopted as the effect measurements of MISS MLS for OSA. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were also performed to identify the heterogeneity among the studies. RESULTS: There were initially 154 articles for identification. Eventually, six studies with a total of 848 OSA patients completely met the inclusion criteria and were further enrolled for analysis. The pooled analysis showed statistically significant lower AHI (apnea/hypopnea index, /hr.; mean difference: -8.931, 95% CI: -11.591 to -6.271, I2 = 87.4%), ESS (mean difference: -2.947, 95% CI: -4.465 to -1.429, I2 = 94.9%), and snoring severity with 0-10 visual analog scale after surgery (mean difference: -4.966, 95% CI: -5.804 to -4.128, I2 = 96.4%). The success rate was 46% in mild/moderate OSA; however, 18% in severe OSA. There were no major complications occurred. CONCLUSIONS: The acceptable surgical outcomes, esp. in mild/moderate OSA, and rare complications are the major advantages of MISS MLS. The evidence of this study could aid the decision making in selecting suitable treatment programs for OSA patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite the need to incorporate seniors from various settings into mindfulness-based empirical research, issues of geriatric frailties and non-compliance remain. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a mindfulness-based elder care (MBEC) program on mental health and spiritual well-being among seniors with disabilities in long-term care residential settings. METHODS: This single-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) randomly assigned seventy-seven participants into an MBEC group or control group of an eight-week MBEC program. Participants were assessed every four weeks at baseline (T0), mid-intervention (T1), post-intervention (T2) and follow-up (T3) using the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-SF), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), respectively. RESULTS: Linear mixed model (LMM) showed that MBEC participants' mental health improved significantly after completing the intervention; compared with controls, the MBEC group exhibited significantly lower anxiety (state-anxiety at T2; trait-anxiety at T2 and T3) and fewer depressive symptoms. Spiritual well-being was also significantly enhanced compared to that in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: MBEC has positive effects on both mental health and spiritual well-being outcomes among seniors with disabilities. In long-term care facilities, seniors with abilities have the potential to adhere to and engage in activities of a mindfulness-based intervention. This low risk, easily accessible, and effective 8-week program is recommended to be integrated into regular long-term care institutional routines. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered with Clinical Trial Registry (ClinicalTrials.gov - U.S. National Library of Medicine #NCT05123261. Retrospectively registered on 07/04/2021.). The CONSORT 2010 guidelines were used in this study for properly reporting how the randomized trial was conducted.

Bone marrow macrophage is an important component of bone marrow microenvironment, which is closely related to hematopoietic regulation and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT). Recent studies have shown that bone marrow macrophage is an important part of hematopoietic stem cell niche, which can help regulate the mobilization and function of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. After HSCT, the microenvironment of bone marrow is damaged and a large number of macrophages infiltrate into the bone marrow. Regulating the macrophage-related signal pathways can promote the recovery of hematopoiesis and the reconstruction of hematopoietic function. Co-culture of macrophages and hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in vitro significantly increased the number of HSCs and their ability of clone formation, which suggests that macrophages play an important role in the regulation of hematopoiesis in the hematopoietic microenvironment of bone marrow. This paper reviews the recent research progress on the role of macrophages in bone marrow hematopoietic microenvironment.
